Today, the country marks 70 years since the adoption of the Freedom Charter, which is regarded as a seminal document in South African history. Among other things, the Freedom Charter explicitly rejected racial discrimination and advocated for equal rights and opportunities for all. Interestingly, it also called for the nationalisation of key industries. For many, the Freedom Charter continues to be relevant today, serving as a source of inspiration and a reminder of the ongoing struggle for social justice and equality in South Africa. But do we really understand the true meaning of this seminal document and how much have we done as a nation in the past 31 years to ensure that the ideas of the charter have been realised.
