Writer Dan King explains why you should be worried about “dirt boxes,” government devices that imitate a cell phone tower and can steal your private information without a warrant. The Texas National Guard reportedly has two aircraft equipped with dirt boxes that can record and listen to calls; stop phones from sending or receiving calls; track the user’s location; and collect a host of other data. The government is using these wide drag nets to collect private information, and the process is so secretive that it’s hard to know how many agencies and states even have dirt boxes in place.
