In a bid to address the Department of Trade, Industry, and Competition's battle against the theft of public infrastructure for resale, which causes R47 billion in economic damage each year, the government announced in a gazette that it intends to require scrap and waste metal sellers to be registered and tax-compliant in order to reduce the illicit flow of goods in the industry.
