Stephen Grootes speaks to Sifiso Skenjana, economist and Managing Director of ESG Analytics about South Africa’s economy contracting 0.2% in the second quarter, after first-quarter growth was revised down to 0.4%. The latest GDP figures show weakness across mining, manufacturing and trade, while business investment also declined. With the economy coming off six consecutive quarters of growth, the focus now shifts to what caused the reversal, whether the slowdown is temporary and what it means for South Africa’s 1.2% growth forecast for 2026.
