Stephen Grootes speaks to Dr Nico Marais, Chairman of Carmel Wealth, about whether buying art is a worthwhile investment or simply an expensive passion. While fine art is often promoted as a store of wealth and an alternative to traditional investments, high transaction costs, unpredictable resale values and limited liquidity can make financial returns difficult to achieve. With research showing that nearly half of artworks resold at major auctions made a loss, should investors be buying art to build wealth, or is its greatest return the pleasure of owning it?
