Claims the process to appoint Ginny Andersen as Police Minister makes a mockery of the crime situation.

Andersen is into her second day of the job after replacing Stuart Nash.

She says more frontline officers is one way to keep New Zealand safe.

National's Mark Mitchell told Mike Hosking the Prime Minister has appointed a junior minister, at a time when crime stats are up.

He says there's a 35 percent increase in retail crime, 45 percent rise in victimisations and a more than 50 percent bump in gang numbers.

Pollies: MPs Mark Mitchell and Michael Wood on National polling, crime and Police

Kiwibank is being forced to follow the big banks’ lead. 

Its one-year special rate has risen 20 basis points to 4.95%, and its two-year also increased 20 points to 5.39%. 

The increase is motivated by the bank’s desire to remain competitive as wholesale borrowing costs continue to rise. 

CEO Steve Jurkovich told Mike Hosking wholesale rates have been hard to deal with, but they don’t think the Official Cash Rate needs to increase in September.  

He says putting the rate up doesn’t produce more oil or make things more settled.

New Zealand ran in eight tries, six of which came in the second half. 

Former All Black Sir John Kirwan believes the side is making progress in preparing for how to shut down the Springboks in the first test on Sunday week.  

He told Mike Hosking they’re breaking down how the South Africans play and the counters are starting to take shape – a better kicking game, kicking behind them, and trying to break down the closing of the gate defence. 

Kirwan says they’re building in the right direction.
