James Meager: Associate Transport Minister on the Government's $5.7m in grants for regional airlines

There are hopes at-risk regional airlines will be able to pay their loans back as they're given more help.

The Government's allocated $5.7 million in grants from the Regional Infrastructure Fund to help with soaring fuel costs.

It's already provided nearly $26 million in loans to date to deal with maintenance and debt.

Associate Transport Minister James Meager told Mike Hosking this new funding will help airlines in the short-term, so they can pay the loans back.

He says they're confident they'll see it all back and believe the sector's stabilised, but this extra funding is just to get through the fuel crisis.
