New Zealand's $47.2 billion franchise sector is being celebrated. 

Today marks the first World Franchise Day. 

The model first took shape in New Zealand in the 1970s – with now almost 550 franchised brands including in accommodation, hospitality, education, childcare and retail. 

Franchise Association Chair Brad Jones told Mike Hosking they’ve had some great growth in the sector over the last few years.  

He says they’re 11% of New Zealand’s GDP, and if motor vehicle sales and retail fuel are included, that brings them to over $73 billion – 17% of GDP.

Brad Jones: Franchise Association Chair on the growth of the sector in New Zealand, World Franchise Day

It's a sudden death match for the Warriors. 

They're going up against the Knights in a knockout clash this weekend at Eden Park in front of what's set to be the biggest Warriors crowd on New Zealand soil. 

If they win, they face Penrith for a spot in the Grand Final. 

Assistant Coach Stacey Jones told Mike Hosking it's disappointing they couldn't get the job done last week, but they have it sorted for the upcoming clash. 

He says they know their game and the players are clear on what their roles are and how they want to do them, so if they get that right they'll be tough to beat.

An Auckland secondary school leader says political parties need to stop kicking education changes down the road. 

If elected, Labour wants to freeze the Government's overhaul of the sector and put an independent group of experts in charge of determining next steps. 

NCEA would be left unchanged until 2029. 

Mount Albert Grammar Headmaster Patrick Drumm told Mike Hosking he questions why the changes need to be slowed down. 

He says they're already well advanced on the reforms to the curriculum and the design of the assessment system, and it would be catastrophic to tell people they're starting again.

The Internal Affairs Minister has called Fire and Emergency's alleged secret-keeping “despicable”. 

Brooke van Velden has lost confidence in chief executive Kerry Gregory, accusing him of actively withholding information about a serious incident for a year. 

The agency has also been referred to the Serious Fraud Office. 

Van Velden told Mike Hosking she doesn't have the power to sack anyone but has made her concerns clear and it's now up to the board. 

She says it goes to the heart of accountability and transparency in public service, where a crown entity has breached its own law.
