Welcome into the lounge.
Today.
You are joined by Cliff Brown and Cassie Cherigo, and we have the newest addition to the Ravens quarterback room, Cooper Rush.
Thanks so much for being with us today, No, thanks for having me. Super excited.
Kind of take us through your free agency process how you ended up here to the Ravens. You've obviously been with the Cowboys for a long period of time, so kind of when in the process for you, did you know that the Ravens were a possibility pretty.
Late in the process. Kind of came out of nowhere and was super excited when you know, my agent said the Ravens call, obviously from Afar there in Dallas. You see, the Ravens are a well run, good organization, obviously tons of success, especially recently. So it was like, wow, Okay, this is sweet and materialized and here we are.
You've been in a quarterback room with Dak Pretscott.
How much are you looking forward to being in a quarterback room with Lamar Jackson.
Yeah, super excited. I mean a former MVP twice I believe, and so I mean pretty excited to get to watch it up close, see how it's done, and help any.
Way I can the rooms led by t Martin. Do you have any familiarity with him? And have you gotten a chance to talk to either him or Lamar since you've signed.
I met Tea in the hallway. That was about it real quick, and I have not met Lamar yet. So you know, when we get here in a month or so, I'm really looking forward to that and you know, getting myself comfortable in that room and getting them comfortable with me and working together.
Now, Lance seas in week three, you got a chance to see the Ravens up close down there in Dallas. I think Derek rant for one hundred and fifty point yards. How nice is it going to be to be handing off to Derek rather than you know, seeing him run against your team?
Yeah? Yeah, I definitely want to want to tackle. That felt bad for our guys, for our guys that day, but yeah, I mean he's a huge asset. I mean every quarterback wants to turn around hand to a guy like that, and you know he's been doing it for a long time in this league and it looks like he's not slowing down.
What are your kind of impressions of the Ravens offense coming into it.
Yeah, just kind of seen it last year with Dallas we played THEFC North, so got to see them a little more on film, and you know, they can kind of do it all. They can run it, they can throw it. I think they took a huge step. I mean you watch worded what forty passing touchdowns or whatever last year, so they can really evolve to whatever they need to be that day and they can do it.
Now, how do you go about building chemistry with these new receiving cool your new targets and how long do you think that process is going to take?
I don't think too long. Obviously you got to gain some rapport with them, and but you learn pretty quickly. You know, throw a couple of times with a few guys and all of a sudden, I like, go okay, and it clicks fast when you think. And so really excited. They have a good group. Obviously just signed the hop too, so I mean it's a really exciting group to work with.
Also, you're looking forward to you got to learn to playbook. You know, Todd Monkin one of the top coordinators obviously in the league. Take me through that process, and are you a little worried about how thick the plates will be good.
But the thing we did that, I think I'm really excited for that part. Kind of get to nerd out and learn a new offense. You know, I've been in one for a long time. It's been pretty similar every year. So to kind of branch out and you know, dive into that study process again, it's exciting and refreshing.
Did you get a chance to meet him while you were here.
Today at all?
No.
I talked on the phone with him, had a great conversation, but not today.
No.
You've been a backup quarterback and have done it well. What are the keys? Some of the keys to doing that?
Being a guy who seems to always be ready even though you don't know when you might play.
Yeah, then that's the name of the game, is you be ready. That's that's your job description. Your number one job description is be ready and your goal when when you're called upon, you go win. And that's that's the job. I feel like I can do a good job when you have to be that guy. You can be that guy, and when you don't, you go back into that other role being an ass in the room, helping out while still preparing. And I think just throughout the years, I've gotten better at that.
Le Get Bayless. He's controversial and he always says crazy things, but he said, like one of the things that he talked about you obviously big Cowboys fan, so he's very locked into everything that you guys were doing. He said that you, in his mind, are the best backup quarterback in the NFL. What is like, what does that kind of mean to you?
If anything, when your numbers called upon, you go do your job and really you just want to respect your teammates and you can go do that being a backup or starter, and that's kind of the cool part about the game. And yeah, that's the number one goal.
Now you're nine and five as a starter. So obviously when you've gotten a chance, you know, you've kept a team winning. What how much pride do you take in being Okay, if I have to come in for Lamar, you know we're going to go out and you know, expect to win and win with me under center as a part.
Yeah, it's really exciting to beyond good team. You know, you get to nine and five. We had some good teams down there in Dallas, and so you just you don't have to play with you don't have to play out of yourself. You can play within yourself, do your job, relying your teammates. And I think you have a similar situation here, you know, a really good offense. Kind of just go do your job, get get the battle of the fast guys, let them work, and you know, do whatever you need do to win.
You've played in a lot of big games, obviously being with the Cowboys for so long, they're on primetime a lot. The Ravens are kind of in a similar way, played on Thanksgiving, you know, Monday night football, all those big games. Do you like kind of those big moments like that.
Yeah, it's kind of all I know, being in Dallas so long, so it will be funny. Having some more one o'clock games will be will be fun. Definitely looking forward to that. But yeah, they're fun. They're fun games. Like I said, were spoiled like that in Dallas, so but everyone's watching. People get to watch, and you know, there's definitely an atmosphere on those games and those night games that are a lot of fun. It's why you play.
You've been you know, a much better player than you know. A lot of scouts thought maybe you know coming out you're undrafted, you know, what do you What did people miss with you? I mean, obviously if the draft had been over, you would have been drafted if they had to redo.
What did people you think missed in you? That you had that they didn't see?
Uh, there's a lot of the physical traits don't jump off the tape. I'm never gonna impress anybody in shorts throwing the ball. But I think there's I was fortunate enough to play four years in college, so a lot of ball, learned a lot of situational type of things, and that kind of helped me early on in my career and hang around a bit, and then I've gone a lot better physically. You know, the NFL is not the ceiling for a lot of guys. I think people forget that that's your job. Full time. Guys get better right every year, and I think that can get lost sometimes. And but back then, yeah, I probably weren't drafting myself either. But here we are, and you know, you just kept working and try to keep it going.
The Ravens have kind of a storied history with undrafted guys finding a lot of success here. They love like a success story, and those are what was kind of that process like for you when you were kind of going.
Through it, Yeah, you knew. I knew I was gonna be a late round, lay around if anything, six seventh round. But yeah, the day calms, day three coms. You know, keep seeing the ticker and you're trying to track how many keep easier, laugh, things like that. But got a sense that we would be undrafted, and it was it was either Tampa or Dallas and Mike with Dallas and it worked out. But the main thing was, you know, once once I got there, was just the goal is to play well enough to make them keep you. That was really all I worried about and turn into eight years.
I know we talked a little bit about puns before we came in here because we had you do sort of a puney video. But they always the cowboys used to call it rush hour when you would come into games. Is that something that you like? Are you kind of sick of it at this point? Should we keep that going?
What are your thoughts keep it going? If one? But yeah, that was that was fun. One.
Do you have any do you actually like any of the puns? Like, does you ever have a favorite use of your name?
I do like Rush hour, I do.
I do like, all right, well, well you can keep that one going there. Fans will love that.
Now you had I was meaning you had seven touchdowns in a game when you were in Central. Seven touchdown fans, that's a lot of Can you tell me about that game? And then you guys ended up not win any game?
Tell me about that?
Yeah, people forget we lost that game. We were down huge, We were down like thirty five entering the fourth quarter, and somehow we kind of run and scored five touchdowns in the fourth and the last the seven touchdowns of hail Mary. Obviously it was laterals and stuff, but still get credit for it. And uh yeah, then we missed the two point conversion to win it, so so one more throws needed, didn't get it. But I think it was a bull record at the time. I know Joe Burrow got close or he tied it. I don't know if anybody else has, but see how long it lasts.
We talked a lot about Cooper Rush kind of on the field, what it's like kind of getting into a new organization. But what stands out to you, you know, about yourself off the field, What would you like people to know about you.
Uh, I don't know. I mean, I'm pretty simple. I'm obsessed with golf, big golfer, got a family, two daughters four and too, so full time dad. We are, we are in it and uh, but things are good. I'm excited to get up here, you know, see the East Coast and all that.
Some people have been influential in your career.
Early on, Jason Garrett was great, and then uh, Kellen Moore as a teammate and as a coach, had him a couple a couple of different ways, and uh, you know, I always be great friends with Dak was huge. I've kind of with him my whole career. So we had a lot of good times together. And you know those three guys and Mike McCarthy. Last couple of years Calm plays well. I learned a ton and you know, I've been fortunate to be around people that really helped me.
That's awesome. Have you guys, have you and your family spent any time in Baltimore and kind of what's your You're you excited to get here? What's that process going to be like for you this off season?
Yeah?
Never been here, so definitely excited. Check. Like I said, check out the East coasts and see, uh, see what's out there somewhere different. That's part of this lead. You know, you can end up seeing a lot of parts of the country and we're excited to finally get that chance.
That's awesome. I have to ask you one more Maryland question for our fans here. It's very specific, but do you know how to pick crabs yet?
No, I don't even know what the process would look like.
That'll be first on your to do list when you get here. Get you some good crabs. You'll learn how to pick them. It's kind of like not it's different than crawfish, but it's a little it's Once you get the hang of it, it's pretty easy. Yeah, that'll be on your on your docket for the off season. Well, thank you so much for the time today. It was great for us to get to chat with you. I know fans will really enjoy getting to know you and we're excited that you're a raven all right, thank you guys.
