For all the glory and fame elite sport can bring, it can also be just as cruel and unforgiving. Former AFL player and St Kilda Football Club assistant coach Ben McGlynn knows that better than most.

After 171 games between Hawthorn and Sydney, he experienced more heartbreak on the main stage than so many others lucky enough to play the great game of Aussie Rules.

McGlynn missed out on two Premierships and lost the additional two he played in, but his resilience in weathering through the dark times has helped mould him into the person, father and family man he is today.

Although still carrying the pain of the past with him, the way he has helped those around him as a coach speaks volumes of his character.

Jack Sinclair is the perfect example of how a change in mindset can bring about the best results.

The luscious-locked Saint had overcome his setbacks after earning his place on an AFL list via the Rookie Draft, but was thrown a new and unexpected challenge after the former mainstay was dropped at the start of the COVID-affected 2020 Season.

Whereas the old Sinclair would have "sooked it up", a shift in attitude - coupled with his willingness to prove himself to his new coaches - initiated his career-defining transformation. 

From that point on, the No. 35 has risen above the difficulties and hardships that have come his way, becoming one of St Kilda's most impressive and skilled players in 2022 to find himself in All-Australian contention.

Despite admitting he felt like he hadn't earned his place up until this current season, Sinclair has gone on to prove that enough willpower and determination can be the catalyst to turn the tide back in one's favour.
