โœŠ๐Ÿผ Russell Crowe

Russell Crowe joined the show in the lead up to the release of his new film 'The Pope's Exorcist' and spoke about his upcoming tour, how he lived off $7 every 2 days, a private performance by Ed Sheeran and so much more! Have a listen for all the details.

Russell crows.

That's right, hanging with Kyle and Jackie.

There he is, Ladies and gentlemen. Russell Crowe has got a brand new film out. You must see it, The Pope's Exercise. It's in cinemas from April sixth, so write it down. This is a great reason to get back to the cinema if you want to see an epic Russell at his best. It's fantastic. It's a long bow because Russell that we know is all round topsy actor. This time he's a he's an exorcism sort of priest on a vesper.

Yeah, it's unbelieving. It's every time Russell.

Because of course it'sta my apology.

Now let me tell Russell. Really, I don't know.

I don't speak Italian, and I didn't realize I'm going to have to read some of this and but.

I'm not I'm not a good reader.

But you you sort of you're reading along and you're watching it, and do you know it? Did you have to learn Italian or it seems like you've known this your entire life.

Well, you know, I love Italy and I have a you know, because of a previous previous job. I have kind of a deep connection to the city of Rome, of course. But I've never learned the language. I've never done a language course or anything. In the words that I know, I've just picked up over time. And the great thing about when you're traveling to Italy, even if you just know a couple of words, people are really enthusiastic about you using the words that you know, and they encourage you to get involved in the very positive about it, unlike other places in.

The world, which I mentioned.

Yeah, but yeah, so over.

Time, I guess the music of the language is just in my head, you know. But having to learn multiple scenes and with the kind of ecclesiastical dialogue that happens in some of those scenes.

Was pretty difficult.

But it was really important to me to try and get it absolutely right.

But I'm no expert, but I will say very good.

Really good, based on a true story. Do you believe yourself like in the in the possibility.

Of becoming possessed all these spirits.

Goes like there's a lot of stark for around and a lot of people think, oh, people are crazy to think of that, But we are very open to believing stuff that we don't know exists, probably does exist.

What are your thoughts?

Well, I think I think the way to approach this is that you have to simplify the question. You can't look at the visual images in a horror film and start from there, you know, simplify the question, and does evil exist.

In our world? Yes? It does?

Does doesn't it?

I mean in our daily lives? Historically?

You know, we can look back and see some incredibly dark things that our species have committed against each other.

You know.

But on top of that, you know, what about those coincidences that happen in your life that are just inexplicable. And the thing is, you know, things happen and people go, wow, that was such a coincidence. Every body has that experience. So therefore, if it's such a shared experience, how does it continue to be coincidence?

You're right, it's almost.

But on top of that, you know, then it's like, have you ever walked into a room somewhere and the energy has changed and now you're not comfortable?

Yeah, that's every restaurant I walk into because everyone turns around and looks at me. You would feel exactly the same thing, Russell. You can't go anywhere with that all the energy you're shifting to yourself and someone else is waiting.

Particularly probably that this might go to Jackie more than to you. But I don't believe there's that intuition is just a feminine thing. But you know, Jackie, there's probably moments with your kids or whatever, and you just know that something has happened, you know. So my take on all of this is that if you stand on top of the mountain of cynicism and think that you know that everything that goes on in the world and how the world works, then I think you're a fool. You know things that we really don't understand. And the older I get, the more I realize I don't know anything.

I've realized the same reason.

By the way commiserations on the loss of your animal, we would we heard about the puppy and I wouldn't be able to come to work if that had happened to me. Like they're like, family members, are you all right?

Is everything right there?

We're actually a little devastating. He was such a beautiful little pup, you.

Know, and he the kids are all right wrapped us around him, and we would shape that lives around him. So it's going to take a little time to get past.

Apologies, sorry to hear our hearts are with you and Andy back to the movie just quickly. There was a did you do any rewriting in the movie, because I felt that when you go and watch the movie, you'll understand there's a kid who's being possessed or whatever. And the kid starts talking demon like and now I thought, this has got Russell rewrite written all over it. The kid reaching out TRAbs the mother's breasts.

You're never breast and I was like, that's got right. I still written all over it.

Yes, well that that area of the script.

No, because I'm not in those scenes, so I don't usually take any authorship the scenes that I'm not in, but certainly shaping the character around the things that i'd discovered, you know, adding the Lambretta scooter, which is a funny thing because I was so insistent about it at the time, because it was a reflection of Rome and life to me, you know, and when you're living in Rome and you want to get from point to point really quickly, a scooter is a fantastic way of doing it rather than having a car and to worry about car parks and stuff. But you know, to me, it was like a practical decision. But it's been so funny. Every time they use an image of the priest on a lambretta on social media whatever, it blows up.

And it's like who knew?

Who knew the desire of people to see a man in a cassock on a lambretta.

It does look good.

I got great footage through the streets.

And how's the tennis going, Russell, because I've started tennis like last year and.

Great Jack look fantastic.

I've seen all the weight she's lost, like she's been on that w W and then a fancy being on weight watches and then also moving the body.

It's incredible.

But I love that. I can't get enough of it. And I see you playing tennis a lot.

We're going to find you because we're always looking for I mean people.

Yeah, but I was going to ask you how good are you at the tennis? How long have you been doing it?

And how would you be at playing it?

Because I would never want to play against someone who's really good, because I'd be embarrassed because I'm only a beginner at this point.

Where's the challenge, right, Well, that's the thing you've got to play with people that are better than you. That's the only way that you learn and you get about you know, we play regularly, Are we wimledon level.

French Open? Yeah? But no no, yeah, I think you know, we're.

Very enthusiastic players because it's sort of you know, there's a mental aspect to the game on top of the physical fitness thing, which it keeps it interesting.

Yeah, I'm addicted to it.

It's in the mental part of it, right, you just want to get it over the net that I.

Just want to get the rallies going. It's all about a rally going.

On Russell another cinema masterpiece. I feel this will be to add to your collection. You're in a great position nowadays where you can just pick and choose. You always you always like picked and choose and being cautious of your choices.

Because you don't seem to be just gets anything, you know.

Yeah, well that's the thing, you know, I obviously you know, after La Confidential, I got a thousand jobs as a policeman offered to me, you know, after Gladiator, Yeah, I got every sword and sound idea in the world. And the thing is I just try and always look for fresh ground, which is why people always are always asking why would you do that? You know, and it may seem odd to them, but in the sort of breadth of my career or whatever, it feels like fresh ground to me.

So that's why it is interesting. You know.

The thing about my job, Kyle, is that I love it, and it's it's makes me a very lucky man, because when I have to get up at four o'clock in the morning, when I have to work a twenty hour day, we have to do things in extreme circumstances. I know why I'm there, So I don't love that, you know, woe is me? Bullshit going on that some people do with their gig, because you know, I understand it as a privilege, and you know, it only takes an hour or two when I finish your job for some little working class boy's voice in my head to go, will you.

Ever work again?

You still I stay, Yeah, I stay hungry about it, and I stay.

And that thing of keeping it in your mind, of knowing.

That it's a privilege to do the job that I do, I think it's a thing that keeps you sort of humble and then and sharp and you know, ready to give because the job is all about giving.

Interesting. It's very say you just.

Give no matter what circumstances are going on in your real life. The only thing that you're supposed to do is when that guy says action, you do your thing, you know what I mean?

So very interesting that that's your drive, because my drive is to not be homeless and living in a cardboard box every again. Yeah, good, good motivation. Yeah, Jackie, wats your motivation? You grew up on the olive capri with that?

Yeah, but we lost our house too, you know, Kyle thinks I grew up with this silver spoon in my mouth. If we didn't at.

All, you had the convertible Capri and everything I wanted.

That. I spent a goodly part of my life living off seven dollars every two days, you know, And that got me a large fried rice and a packet of cigarettes.

That's all that matters.

I had to make it last forty eight hours before I could get my next punnet of fried rice.

And that's how I lived man for a long time.

I mean, I was singing on the streets, and you know, just busking for a living and trying to actually pay rent.

Is kind of a it's a difficult trick, it is, you.

Know, but that's the sacrifice to your craft and it's worked out all right.

Yeah, it's great movie, The Pope's Exorcist. It's in cinemas from April six. Russell, thanks for joining us.

No, we're going to go back on the road again shortly and do some shows that anybody to let you know about that?

Yeah, I know. I've always supported the music side.

We loved that night.

What's the plan? What are you doing? What are you doing?

It?

So it's called indoor Garden Party, but it involves a number of acts, and that involves a band called the Gentleman Barbers I've been mucking around with for the last four years, and a couple of singers from Ireland, Loren o'reiley and Janet Devil And you can look up both those girls' works online.

They're fantastic.

Lorraine is kind of like this raspy Bonnie Rait sort of singer, and Janet is almost like the opposite. She's like this wistful Stevie Nicks kind of voice, you know. And then there's a young Sydney band where it's called Myth of Her. They're actually a metal band. But when they play with us, they playing acoustic mode so you can hear all the lyrics and stuff. They're musically like fantastic, you know. But we're going to be We start May ninth and tenth. I think we're in the Northern and Byron and now we're playing Coffs Harbor.

We play Port mcquarie. We do a weekend it's in Sydney at.

The Bridge Hotel, and we do a couple of shows at the Cherry Byron, Melbourne and then the Esplanade in Melbourne. We go up to the Gold Coast for the Miami Marquette at the Trifford and Brisbane. We're going to do a show Australias. You can see it a crocodile show, then you can see us and then you can see some more crocodiles from Brilliant. It's going to be at the Canberra Theater. Anthony Alberaneese he tells me he's popping along.

He's promised to pop into my wedding as well and do a DJ set, But I don't know if that's going to happen on us.

It'll be all independent Aussie songs from the eighties. Mate, it'll be a great time.

You love you love the music in the opera?

Is it love the acting and the music is you wouldn't put one above the other.

You you were in love with.

It's it's the same energy, man, It's the same creative performance energy, you know. And you know I did a lot of theater when I was a young fellow, but I also did a lot of cornrolla played in bands for years and years and years, you know, and it's my kind of place. I go back to that energy, you know, on a cycle. I haven't done shows in Australia, you know, prior to January this year when I did a couple, but you know, before that was twenty fourteen. But in the meantime, you know, I've played in New York, I played in Los Angeles, I played in you know, the South of France. I've played in London, in Leeds, in Dublin, in Stockholm and Revic, you know, and everywhere. So you know, it's music's very important to me. And you know, if people come along and see the band, don't listen to these other idiots that tell you that people who should only do one thing.

Oh, I can't stand those creative people have many creative outlets and to be pigeonholed in, Oh you're Kyli Minogue, you can only be on neighbors.

It's bullshit. People can show their creativity in many different ways.

Russell's doing it and on a multiple This band that I'm with, you know, we have you know, there's up to like thirty years of relationships in this band, and you know people have known each other for decades and everything, and that really does affect the music.

You know, who messaged me the other name you have? A certain Marsha Hines was talking to me about Idol and obviously Amy's on Idol, and Amy talked.

So highly of you, like very respectful. She's a lovely kid.

And then marsh was like, you know, you and me, Russell and Amy need to get together my brother. And I'm like, you know, that sounds great, but we never ever do.

You know you're saying, Actually, Marsha's sung with this band quite a bit. You know, we've got some recordings and we're thinking about one of the songs that we do so I think we'll let Your Life Shine, and we're thinking about that as a single, and she's the other voice on that.

What about Snoop and Ed Sheer and I saw you backstage there with a suspect.

I mean, you know it's sort of like that looks like, you know, a celeb hang But the Roald is we're friends, you know ed for a long time and we hang out when we can. And you know, he did those big two shows in Melbourne just before and I was supposed to turn up on the Friday night man, but I was shooting, and you know, I was supposed to finish at eight and they said nine, they said ten. I mean I didn't finished the laughter eleven, you know, so I missed the show. And this is the type of guy Ed is, you know, I'm like, I'm sorry, man, you missed the show. I was just working. I'm heading home, you know, and he goes, I'm coming over. So he came over and at a certain point in the night he said, here's a new song.

I haven't really sed itt and just sing me a song.

How amazing, And you.

Know I got a concert of my own.

You know, oh you did how good? One show? I love it.

And then the next night, because he had a Saturday night off, which is very rare in his line of work, he said, what are you doing tomorrow night? And I said, well, I'm going to go and catch up with Calvin, you know.

Snoop that is for everyone else.

And he's like, man, let's do that.

It was so cool.

So he went to Snoop together and he was just he just loves Snoop's music.

Man.

He was up the back just popping it out, you know. And then we got to hang out with him backstage and that was that was a great catch up.

Snoop's a great guy.

I went to Amsterdam with Snoop for a weekend because we're working on some stuff in LA and he's like, I got to go to Amsterdam, I said. When He's like tonight and I was like, oh, I've flown from Australia.

He's like, come to Amsterdam. So next minute we're in.

Amsterdam, shower camps on stone, ringing bells, riding bicycles.

I'm like, what sort of life is this? A good one?

Russell, he's a good Man's great that tour, by the way, just back to that with so let's call Russell Crow's indoor garden party.

Crows and Garden. I'm writing it down.

We're at the Sydney Opera House June ninth, and then we're in the Manning Bar in Sydney. That's the last show of the tour on June tenth. That's my birthday.

Things is it?

I should come along to that because I'm going to do.

Lubs, pubs, clubs and some theaters. So the show is going to sort of change its nature type of thing depending on the venue we're in. You know, when everybody's got a comfy seat, I'll probably tell.

The more story.

Where are you on April? Where are you April twenty nine? Are you doing anything that night?

April twenty Is.

That on your list there of tours? No?

No, no, we don't start the shows until May night.

May.

But April twenty nine, I think I'm heading. I probably shouldn't say it. I'm going to. I probably shouldn't say I've got a thing that I might do with somebody you mentioned earlier in this interview. How was that coming up a little later on?

Now I'm trying to think who I mentioned or you mentioned?

Will you mentioned? We mentioned? You mentioned that the Irish cheeks And.

I have to guys, I have to jump off because I've got to get on.

Right on the cusp of exposing what he's doing.

Russell, great to see you.
