Helping individuals identify skills, talents among Native Americans

View descriptionShare

Guest: David Thomas | Julian Gibb interviews David Thomas.  Regarding Native Americans living on reservations, David Thomas says, "We help individuals identify their gifts, talents, passions, skills, and help them go to a university or community college. Many people will return to their communities and make a positive impact." David says, "It's not trivial for a young person to go away to college. We help them understand what they're skilled at, and what they're good at."  David continues regarding his organization Open Door AZ; "We have identified two areas in particular that are of real need: first, getting to college. We have an Adopt a School Program; we're focused on secondary education to resource teachers, principals, and community leaders so they have everything they need to do their job, and encourage students to make the transition into university or community college." David continues, "Second, we're focusing on college retention. Retention is the one of the highest metrics of student success. We're looking to find Communities of Support... culturally relevant communities where people feel that they're at home; they have a family, mentors, tutors, faith-based groups who are willing to come alongside and help that student make it all the way to graduation." https://www.opendoorsaz.org/
