Graeme Raubenheimer speaks to Muneeb Gambino, Director of the Kaapse Klopse Karnival Association, who explains that preparations for Tweede Nuwe Jaar begin months in advance, involving entire communities across Cape Town. From elders passing down ghoema rhythms to young performers learning discipline, teamwork and pride, the Klopse continues to serve as a cultural fortress against erasure and commodification. Gambino stresses that the carnival is not entertainment for outsiders, but a living memorial to history, struggle and joy — and that its meaning must be protected.
