South Africa is rolling out body-worn cameras as a potential tool to improve police accountability and public trust. Criminologist Jean-Piere Roux argues that cameras alone cannot deliver accountability if police retain control over when footage is recorded, accessed and reviewed. He discusses the independent oversight, operational rules and safeguards needed to ensure body cameras actually hold police to account.
