A study of Grade 8 history classrooms in the Northern Cape has found that using indigenous languages can help learners question established historical narratives. Senior Lecturer Simthembile Xeketwana explains how learners used isiXhosa alongside English to explore the Kimberley diamond rush, challenge textbook terminology and consider whose perspectives are missing from the historical record.
