Great eggs, welcome in. It's our two of the program. Fired up on a big Friday night, so much activity in front of US NBA games. We got to see Lebron do the big Shaw clap that everybody loves or hates so much. Yeah, all of that stuff, and Anthony Davis didn't have a voice, so it really couldn't help in the defensive rotations. A night ago I saw that. So he sits down San Antonio with a sixteen to fourteen lead midway through. Actually no, it's nineteen fifteen now, sorry dated. Five minutes left in the first quarter, plenty of time to watch the superstars and the stars arrive there. Golden State playing a late one as well, so fun stuff as we come to you live from the Tirack Dot com Studios, tire rack dot com. We'll hope you get there. An unmatched selection, fast free shipping, free road has a protection and over ten thousand recommended installers go to ti rack dot com. And that's the way tire buying should be. Carry rhads in for Jason Smith tonight having a blast thus far at Carrie twenty five roads where you find them in the Twitter verse. Find me over at Swollen Dome Instagram for you. Yeah, just carry roads, just Carrie Roads. Leave out the two five. I'm at Swollen Dome there as well. Keep it nice and simple as best we can. Surprised nobody had squatted on any of those monikers. We'll leave it there, as we're here on a Friday night. Now, we have a story that broke a little bit earlier concerning college football and the rules of engage and carry. Given your status in the collegiate and professional worlds. No, I'm not talking about six hundred bucks in a video game, which was fun and exciting. No, we're getting into the more weighty stuff of nil and the new rules or lawlessness that some would say is afflicting the college game. Pete fu Tech College Football News are Buddy Will join us in about twenty minutes from now. But a federal judge in Tennessee granted a preliminary injunction on Friday afternoon that prohibits the NCAA from punishing athletes or boosters for negotiating name, image and likeness deals during their recruiting process or while they are in the transfer portal. Nice little wrinkle that comes into this. Right, it's not a final ruling, but the decision, you know, has the immediate impact of all. Right, wallets are open, phone lines are humming, buzzing, and make sure that you found a charger. Unlike the old Bengals locker rooms. See all those callbacks to make sure that you keep it charged and ready to go, because odds are the nearest car dealership, pizza place, or just a guy with the giant bag of cash might be on the other end of the line.
Carry oh man ah, yes, it's I'm you know what, I'm happy for them actually that they're getting paid.
I am one hundred percent.
I would be remiss to say that, but this is getting to the point now where it's I mean, it's not even about the value that you're putting on the field or the product that you're putting on the field now, and these kids are going to be negotiating deals come out of high school that you know, the prestige of the university does not matter anymore. Your favorite team as a kid doesn't matter anymore. Like none of those there's there's gonna be no harmony in.
Those dig You sitting there with a bit of a halo over your head there because I raised my hand and go bag men, because we have the Johnny Manzel in the podcast right talk about his old man behind his back negotiating. Yes, maybe more maybe stuff his dad did that he still doesn't know about, which I'm sure is the case for not only Johnny Manziel, but plenty of folks at different levels of celebrity. I'm not I'm not naive. I wasn't born yesterday. I go for walks around the neighborhood with you know, parents of you know, my kid's friends and whatever, go walk the dog and I'll and they'll start getting into politics and I'll laugh and like what I'm like, I'm a Chicago kid, it's all you know, all actors in one way or another. And I think the same thing when it comes to these discussions about nil everybody talking about the sanctity of the game and all that. You can lose me with it, like, because that's das. You can lose me from that conversation because I am buying that a. It was ever there. It was just had to be. It had to have a cloak that was a little thicker than the pants that fanatics is putting out. We'll get into that story a little bit later, but now where it's it's full on right. You have the the attorneys uh in Tennessee and Virginia arguing that the NCAA was illegally restricting the opportunities because you couldn't reach ni L deals prior to deciding where you wanted to go to school. Filed at the end of January, and now it's the next step, right. Obviously, appeals and fights and language that that goes through it carry. But you know, we've talked about it a lot, you know, when it comes to these coaching changes, Chip Kelly being the latest, Like, you know, they may not say it and they may only ascribe some small piece of the pie to it, but how many of these coaches like to hell with this? I'll go be a coordinator somewhere else, I may have a little less of a pay pay grade where I'm going, I'm I'd have to give up a couple of bucks, but I don't have to deal with boosters on this whole other love because they're always there. But now it's all sorts of business deals making sure you're tracking, Like you know what I mean though, Like you got to have this whole infrastructure that never had. You had to have a compliance guy or two, right, compliance man or woman, and one or two other people there that were looking at larger scale things and they'd answer the phone if someone had a tip. Right, one of your guys was seen, you know, getting a smoothie and some dude left a giant bag at his feet that may or may not have been shoes or someone's laundry, you know what I mean. Like you had those stories and now it's like you got to hire out a whole wing of people.
Oh yeah, you're gonna have I was like, who's broken all these deals? I mean the players themselves.
Players and their agents slash representatives slash parent all that. But as a coach, you want to be apprized. You're gonna be apprized at all this whether you want to or not, because a lot of that's going to be tied to playing time and whatever else. And now you're you're trying to say, well, do I want this kid who signed whatever deal? I mean, he might be number two on my depth chart, and part of that is playing time. So he may get here, be here two weeks and then decide, hey, I gotta leave. Yeah, and the portal becomes that much bigger a pain in the next for a coach trying to keep a program running harm you know, harmoniously.
This is it's wild now. Now, if the name image likeness thing, if that deal was set on a set number that you know, they paid all the kids, that would just be.
That would be the answer to it. I mean, it seems we I mean, it seems.
Like a cop out obviously, because some players are more covetant than others. And that's just part of the deal. That's part of life. Like there's a pecking order a lot of times when it comes to even if you're a CEO, right, there are some CEOs that are better than other CEOs or companies or whatever. So there's a number that goes attached to those certain things. So saying would be as a star player coming in that you wanted to get. But I don't know if there's a way to make it where there's a pool of money that goes into a thing that you know that they can pay those guys.
But this thing is going to be bananas.
Well, because that's what I had suggested long ago, long before any of this started getting down this highway, was well, one way you could do it is just per year of service, you get whatever into an escro account. When you leave the school, you graduate, you go to the pros whatever. Here's a pile of cash in the interim. Yeah, you do have an extra stipend for being whatever a student athlete, or just drop the student altogether and just say you're playing football here, right, you get an extra three grand a month in season or whatever that arbitrary number becomes, and then it's flat and it moves on. Now obviously we're far past that. Now we start getting into labor laws on a whole of the level. Gift came Colter and all the guys from Northwestern back out there. I know Princeton had had a thing where they were working on something as well, but you know the NC double A as an institution has been on its last legs just kind of get tipped over at this point.
Man.
Just like even like eligibility and all those things, Like I mean, we talk about football, but if you talk about basketball as well, like eligibility, I mean, you go to college now and you get you do the nil and get paid a couple million at a duke or somewhere like that, right playing basketball being a duke blue level four five months and get a couple million dollars and leave out It's like all right, like you know what I mean, Like the prestige about that for me, I do have value in that for me still, sure.
And so it's just it's it's hard.
And like I said, I'm happy they're getting paid, but it's you're not a student athlete anymore. So like you said, take got the student thing. And and now if you've been out of the game for seven years, if you want to go back to college and play football, if you can do it, go back and play football.
But that's it. Do all those rules changed too, Like if I could still go show up and say hey, if I still had like whatever, the eligibility has become even in terms of how many years you played, because that's.
Well, we know that's kind of changed already.
Well but yeah, well we've had guys up six, seven years or whatever, so well, I mean it goes back. We were talking with Jason Cole last hour, right, I mean, Justin Fields is twenty four years old. He's got three years of NFL experience, and he's what three or four months older than a couple of the quarterbacks that are about to get drafted. Yes, other guys that are still playing more college that are older. Right because of the COVID year and and all those other things, the old transfer rules where you had to sit for a year, like, all of that stuff comes into play now. One of the cases because Florida State got sanctions because there was a collective trying to make an offer to a guy who might have been coming to Florida State. So that's where it gets into that sticky wicket and what they're trying to avoid saying, hey, if you're in the portal, it should be fair game because part of it, part of us is recruiting you, is you're going to get a bag, which I think in the today's game with you know again, lawlessness, I guess is a word you see a lot and some bemoaning you've ruined the game and the sanctity of it all, et cetera. Again, you've got multi billion dollar TV contracts. Yeah, yes, I mean you were part of the machine. And we've heard the lamentation for years of why I couldn't afford to do this that the other some of the guys. It was found out later on they had giant satchels of cash sewn into their mattresses or whatever, or someone that was hooking them up.
I'm exiting the conversation now, No, but no, but.
You get my point right. Look, the statute of limitations on you is it's but you get my point right, like that you might have had friends of the program, whatever, but it had to be under the table, behind the curtain, whatever else. But anybody trying to claim that those didn't exist when players showed up on campus that didn't quite look or play like the rest of the squad, it's kidding themselves.
Yeah.
No, it means it was almost obviously the taboo thing to talk about, right. I mean I went to Louisville, and you know, I mean football for us was secondary when I first got there. I mean, we were a basketball school, and so we would see the basketball guys and we would be like, we know they're getting it. It wasn't even a question about where they get paid or whatever. It was just like something about what they're doing is different than.
What we're.
Not.
Just the shape of the ball and that's it.
And now it's like you eliminate that conversation, which is fine, which in theory makes it seem like it's a better place to be in. But now we're getting into all these different legs, all of these branches off the tree where it's like, how are you going to control these things? And who's going to be the one to set up that infrastructure and we don't don't know.
Well that's just it, right. We went from here, you know, on one side of the field, and said, all right, the grass is greener over there, let's go hang out over there. Problem is, we didn't navigate the path with any rules, so we're losing some stuff as we're crossing that barrier, you know, like that little troll under the bridge or whatever you want to call it, to where it's like, all right, how do you put the genie back in the bottle? Not fully because we like the gifts that he's given us. Yes, but because everybody's getting paid. But like, how do we do it to where there still remains some semblance of college football versus it's now just amateur, it's now just full on the minor league of the NFL. Right, we've all said that, and we all know that to be true. But do we just formalize that once and for all and be done with it? Like you said, here's a guy that's you know, twenty eight years old? Right, can I go back for there? I mean, you know I could be a star on campus and get my nil.
Is need feeling a little better? Right now? Let me go see if I can go to Florida State a little bit? Can I clear it?
Physical? You get back out a field? He's carry Roads. Pete, thanks for being up with us on a Friday night. Kind of a fun friday in college football.
Huh, It's always a fun Friday night in college football. What's going on, guys.
Well, you know, we're trying to dissect it. How quickly do you walk over with your pinky and knock over the NCAA once?
But everyone always thinks the NTA is dead. Everyone always forgets there's like other sports too. I mean it's not just football. They have to deal with insurance and boring stuff for women's diving and men's soccer and other things. It's not just the whole world is thinking, oh yeah, yeah, NCAA is going away. They're not going away. It's just they they're lessening their jurisdiction, which they never really had to begin with. And the other part about this, which I'm really enjoying because I've been kind of on a social media vendor lately, is the perfect circle then diagram, strangely enough, between people who are like, yeah, we're getting rid of the NCAAA. They're going bye bye, and the same people also say I hate college sports. Now they have gone off the rails. I miss it. Well, duh, because you don't have any NCAA to to be have any jurisdictions. It's a very strange moment in college out of.
All those sports you just you just brought up an interesting point. Obviously, Yeah, we were enamored by you know, college football, Obviously, we've been forever, and I think some people are starting to kind of waiver with their love for it.
But there's other sports.
But when you throw in those other sports, which one carries the most weight in this conversation besides besides football obviously, which we know best.
Ahead, Yeah, to the.
Point, to your point is that I actually kind of think the market's going to repair itself because it's all these people are just going to keep throwing money at collective for some dumb reason. I don't get it, Like I I don't get why. I want to see why teams win, but why am I going to pay for them to pay the players? Like it just makes absolutely no sense, But some people are going to do it. I think in basketball it makes a bigger deal exactly because football, you need you're taking a guess, You're you're paying all this money for maybe you get a linebacker here and a quarterback there, but that's not a guarantee that that money is gonna work. You get the right two guys in basketball and all of a sudden, or women in basketball at this point, and almight's going to be for the women size. Well, you get the right two people, and all of a sudden, you got a team. You know, youve got Zach ed who didn't transfer, Jadan m d for San Diego State, for example, who transfer a few times in Arizona. Exactly, you get the same same those sorts of players. I think that's where you change it more than football.
Yeah, we're referring to for those just joining us, the federal judge in Tennessee and the preliminary injunction prohibiting the NCAA from punishing athletes or boosters for negotiating name, image likeness deals during recruiting or while in the transfer portal. Uh So, what happens in the interim? Does Florida State get their their stuff back? Or let's still do.
It for us?
Exactly? Two thousand Greek finally take the astrisk golf and give Reggie Bush's heisman. Now, who say it was okay that he had as about right. Look here and to that point though here here it is no one wanted to say it because everyone kind of brushed it all under the rug. They've been doing this for forever in college sports. Now it just has a name. Now it's just out in the open, like, oh, no, people are gonna start talking to high school players. Well, come on, duh, I mean said transam the near Dickerson got from Texas.
A and M I mean that trans am.
That was a sweet looking right. I just they've been doing this. It's always been that way. Ricky Road has always been getting the tractors.
Yeah, it's the thirtieth anniversary. We just celebrated it this week. And I know you did.
Greatest Sports the greatest sports movie of all time?
Did you take money?
But they it's always been ye. But now it's just sort of out in the open. Reggie Bush did have marketing deals and it was okay, It's fine. And the other part that gets lost here is, oh, gosh, college football, the rich are gonna get richer. Well, since Minnesota won the national championship, the outright national Championship in nineteen sixty, they've only been nineteen teams that have won an outright national championship, like unanimous, not one of these you know, Georgia Tech, Colorado things. It's just an outright national title. And a lot of them are one timers, like eighty four BYU or seventy six pitch. So it's not like, you know, oh, now, maybe Alabama's going to be good at football. Well, Alabama, Ohio State, Texas, Michigan. You know, the same teams that were good before and have been good throughout the history of college football are still going to be good. The only difference is maybe some crazy billionaire decides, you know what, before I die, I want to see Syracuse win a national championship, becides he throws all his money to Eracuse Collective instead of his kids or something like that.
But minus the processing fees.
People, right, let me know when, let me know when that happened, so I can, uh, I can back that bet.
But uh, until.
Until then, we're gonna We're gonna say the powerhouses is still gonna be powerhouses. But I think, uh again, I think this conversation is so layered. Obviously, I mean, me being a former collegiate athlete and seeing it from afar, you're.
Gonna start singing a little Joni Mitchell. I'm seeing life from both sides now.
Well yeah, yeah, you know what I mean from that.
He can't even keep a straight face.
I'm waiting for him to, you know, to say how he got you know, the ticket.
No, I'm not gonna say.
We got a little you know handshake here.
Yeah, you know, you know, back in that time, we thought those things were cool.
No, but but no, but now but now it's like I'm trying to understand and I'm on, there is thing right now with that conversation is like we talked about it before you came on. It's how are they going to set up any infrastructure here? How are they going to make you know, winning still be a priority in this thing, and not just about the money.
We all forget we're talking about this. One's February twenty third. We're talking this on a Friday night. Yeah we're weird, Yeah, we we're creat I mean, you have to remember, like right now, there's no bigger NFL fan I am. Do I really care about talking about the NFL's side of the combat right now? Not really get me to August and let's go. We forget that ninety eight percent of the people out there right now is college football. It's like, okay, whatever, and as soon as they get to kick the ball off, everything's okay. You know, when when Jalen Milroe in Alabama had it, you know, with one down to go to get by Michig or keep it going against Michigan, did anybody care about nil money at that point of the transfer portal? No, it's just we all forget how this all sort of work. But at the end of the day, it's still college football, and this starts your infrastructure. I still think, and I know that judge ruling kind of had a little bit of thing to do with this. The NCAA is going to have some jurisdiction in certain areas, maybe not over nil, but you could change the transfer portal rules. I'm all for nil. I am all four the players getting there, all good with that. But I don't like the idea of unfettered free agency. That just seems weird. That just seems wrong. And the other part that we miss in all this, and it's the crazy crazy part here. For example, I have two daughters for their entire lives with me. There's been a TV on in the house with a sport of some sorts. Do they care about sports at all?
No?
Do they go to college and really care about their you know, football or as basketball team? Well yeah, kind of, but not really. It's not why they're there, you know. So it's you forget these kids are actually kind of supposed to go to college and learn stuff, but that's gone by by at this point because now they're they're they're they're effectively professional athletes, you know, playing college sports. And there is a I do see it. I do see it out there where the NFL is so awesome and so big. There are people it's like, well, why am I watching this instead of watching the NFL where the really good players are. And I get that to a certain extent. However, the silver lining is just wait, does they screw this up? Wait till you see what's coming when this college new college football playoff kicks in. I don't think people who do what I do are grasping yet how much bigger and how more massive this sport is going to be. It's they're going to own December for the most part. The NFL's going to own December, but college football is going to own a chunk of December, even more so, and the conference championships are going to be even bigger because those are like those are like playoff games now, and the lead up now for these conference title games is going to be massive. So for all the other stuff we're talking about right now, in February, when it becomes you know, October, and there's that one game that maybe just maybe is in your Kentucky beats Georgia and gets into the race or something, all of a sudden, people aren't going to care about this other stuff.
S Our guy Pete few Tech college football news editor, writer, owner, publisher, all the game previews, all the good stuff that you love I he gives it to you on the website there at pee fu Tech also where you find his personal thoughts on all of this in the Twitter verse. And Pete, I'd be his final question. You mentioned the combine. You got two or three guys you want to throw out for people to make sure they keep an eye on their numbers and measurables this week.
Let's just start. Yeah, let's just start with the fact that let's see who actually decides to show up and play.
This is true.
The quarterbacks are going to be in your corductor, crazy whether I want to see if brock Bowers does anything, but it's probably not. But he's to me, he's the one key in this, this whole thing, because if you're your I go for example, you're gonna go Caleb Williams. If you can get brock Bowers, if you can trade somehow to make sure you get them, or you take them when you have that check belivether the eighth or but if you get it then the ninth. Yes, all of a sudden, it's not Mahomes and Kelsey, but all of a sudden, you got your you know your Mahomes and Kelsey wanna.
Bees and you have DJ Moore there that you got from last year. So exactly so.
You've got some stuff. But to you answer your question, all the receivers, whoever the receiver that the quarterbacks are going to get all the love in this, but the wide receiver is the big position. There are a lot of really good ones that are going to go early, and it's gonna be who blazes the fastest forties and this because there's gonna have to be something that creates a buzz. One guy's gonna come out there and rip it up and all of a sudden. He's going to be the guy to step up from the pack, to be second behind Marvin Harrison Junior. When he goes. Thought of the LSU receivers day and a whole school of other really good targets. The wide receivers are going to be the stars of this thing.
I got one more for you really quickly. We gotta be quick with to us. And but I wanted to see and I know I want to hear you talk about Cooper Dijon.
I want to.
I know he just said he's not going to participate, but I was looking forward to him.
Yeah, just coming back from an injury. Very very good put returner versatil can do a little bit of everything. He will go after the first wave of corners. But he is a late first round pick. But you're right, he's still hurt. He's not gonna be able to work out until privately of private workouts.
Got it.
There you go. He's our guy. Pete Futech at College foot at college Football News at Petefutech college footballnews dot com, your source for everything as we get towards you, we got plenty of time to talk legallys and labor laws. Pete will continue to do the offseason, buddy, appreciate you. Thanks for stopping down. Kerry Rhoades, Mike Carman here with you The Jason Smith Show with Mike harmon Fox Sports Radio. Now, let's turn it over to our guy, Steve de Seger, because there's a lot going on in our sporting universe.
There is we can update in minutes.
The NBA team that only scored twenty nine points in the first half tonight. Yes, but I did notice Pete had to quickly correct himself about college football owning December because it was announced that as they expand the college football playoff, Hey, we're going to go deeper in December with these first round playoff games, We're gonna have three on a Saturday, to which the NFL shrugghoulder and says, you're aware that we have games on Saturdays at that point of the season.
Two you ever heard of Week sixteen.
Which start going Saturday? Or two?
Even the Peacock only Bill's Chargers got seven million viewers. It wasn't even on regular TV. So standing by to see what happens with those two. For those who aren't aware of the actual story they were referencing, it was today that a federal judge in Tennessee granted a preliminary injunction that prohibits the NCAA from enforcing its own rules against pay for play in recruiting, so effective immediately, the nil collectives can negotiate deals with recruits without fear of NCAA sanctions, which brings up, as I quoted on the previous show, Stuart Mandel and The Athletic, longtime college sports writer, saying, my first reaction to the news, this renders the entire plot of the movie Blue Chips obsolete.
It really does kill it. JG. Walsh one of the great movie villains. How much should we give him?
Shaquille O'Neal got paid in that movie. Penny Hardaway's mom gets a house.
I'm matten Over, you get a tractor former Indiana basketball player.
As he wrote today in The Athletic, this assumption to a nineteen ninety four movie audience that paying a recruit was a sin was so ingrained in the public that an entire film could be based around an NCAA violation without ever having to explain in the movie why it's a rule, how things have changed?
Well, it's it. Matt and Over also played for Bobby Knight thirty nine years ago. Tonight nick chair throwing incident.
Nick Nolty was playing a Bobby Knight character that movie.
It all full circle here.
Charlotte has won four in a row. In their NBA game at Golden State tonight, the Hornets in the first half had twenty nine points, twenty nine, fewest in a first half for any NBA team this season. We now are under three minutes to go in the third. They have forty five points. They might not have fifty in three quarters.
People.
That's impressive in its own way.
It is quite impressive, Yes, it is. The Warriors are leading sixty four forty five late in the third against Charlotte, which is shooting now up to thirty one percent from the floor. Denver's winning again late third at Portland eighty seven seventy two. Blazers have lost six in a row. The Bucks are down one at Minnesota in the third sixty one sixty Timberwolves. If Minnesota wins, the record would be forty and sixteen. Lebron James is playing in LA. Lakers lead at the half against the Spurs sixty six fifty nine Anthony Davis twenty points, Victor wembin Yama with twenty at the half, US Women's soccer and LA tonight still leading three nothing over Argentina. Passed sixty minutes. Now it was three nothing after twenty minutes. And how about this college base game tonight at Arkansas? They had a pitcher going. Who's the top twenty draft prospect for MLB, Hagen Smith. His first fifteen outs tonight against Oregon State were all by way of strikeouts.
Wow.
He had six scoreless innings, seventeen strikeouts, one walk, was throwing a three hitter, left up four nothing, bullpen blew the lead. Arkansas still got a run bottom of the eighth to win five to four. Apparently this guy was a big high school prospect. Came back from injury for his senior year in high school and set the Texas high school record with seven no hitters in his senior season. Wow, before going to collegeball.
Wow.
The Yankees on speed out, Yeah, standing by on that one. The Yankees, you know they used to be contenders every year. I'm old enough to remember.
Oh my god, tails for another time. Thanks Steve. That's Steve Disager at the update desk. We've got Patrick and Alex making us sound so pretty. He's Carry Rhoades in for Jason Smith. You know him, musician, he's an actor and he played in the National Football League product of Louisville. Louisville because I can't say, like when people say Louisville.
It's the wrong it doesn't even sound right to you.
No, it doesn't Louisville.
I still say it every now and then, just to keep people in the toes.
Well, you got it. You gotta keep people dancing. Steve mentioned Golden State with the lead as they have it here sixty four forty six. They have the sixth easiest schedule remaining according to tankathon first half right, and we use the air quotes for half. The Warriors in Portland played the fewest amount of games. They still, including tonight, had twenty eight games left on their second half schedule, and that's one to grow on. Coming up next, Mike McCarthy's not going to the com guine does it matter? So many storylines, so many games in progress, and a little bit of grab ass mixed there in, and and one story that I thought was interesting. Come want to get your your spin on it, having played in the league and and knowing the personalities of coaches, their level of involvement uh in these processes, and it's a changing game. We're talking about it from the college side, but certainly from the NFL as well. Mike McCarthy is not going to the combine now, he didn't go last year. And they come back and they have the highest scoring offense in the game. Ye didn't see any bit of that come to the playoffs. But that's a maybe that's why they need to stay back, uh and work on that some more. But he's not gonna go, and they're going to stay in the building, he and dan Quinn, and they're going to try to really hammer down what they've got, not dan Quinn. Dan Quinn's gone your new DC UH to try to Zimmer Zimmer right by Zimmer. So the two of them, right, change out one old coach for another kind of the same guy to a degree.
Uh No, No, dan Quinn's a little different. I mean they are they are similar in the.
And in terms of the path kind of thing, right. Yeah, no, not not saying one for one, but in terms that which is why it was easy to conflate them. In my head, it's like, no, he got rid of him and moved him on, and off he goes and head coaching somewhere else. Second, second bite at the apple with a lot of cap space and opportunity, and we'll talk about Washington and what they've got going on here in a minute. But when we look at the coach not going right, obviously have a lot of people on the ground, a lot of people doing interviews. Is to me, it still seems odd that you wouldn't be there, that you wouldn't have boots on the ground as the headman, and obviously zoom and FaceTime calls and all of that stuff that you can do, but that you wouldn't be there for that process since ultimately you are the CEO of everything that's got to transpire, that something could get lost in translation without being.
There, I think that's I think it's a huge deal that he's not there. Number One, Obviously you're not really I mean, I guess at this point in this day and age, a lot of these younger guys aren't doing the actual physical workouts there. So number one, you're not going to see that. But you should have seen enough tape to know that they can play. So I get that. So if you didn't want to go because of that, then that would be an excuse, a valid one. But I think now more than anything at this time, in this day and age, you want to know who you're bringing in. So the interview process is huge. So to actually be around those guys and see them in there in that environment with other guys that are going to be drafted, they're contemporary so to speak, like to see how they interact in those rooms, in those spaces, and then doing the actual interview process.
It's huge, especially.
For a guy that you're going to invest and give a real opportunity to, especially those guys that are gonna be high in those first round, second round, third round guys. Obviously most of those guys usually can't play, but those gems that are in that fourth the seventh round where you can find a steal and find guys that have good character, that guys that you want to have on your team that can help you potentially be a starter, but also those glue guys on your team that help you win when you get to an NFL. You can find some of those diamonds in the rough through that process so for you to not be there and want to feel that and being an energy for me, if I was the head guy, I'm gonna be involved in every bit of the process.
And that's the thing, right And obviously there's plenty of opportunity towards draft to get through the filters or whatever, but not all in that same space, in that same space, in that same you know, pressure cooker, for lack of a better term, but also just for the fact that in that moment you get to eliminate a bunch of guys off your board because aren't you like there, I get it, you trust your defensive coordinator, although I think he's gonna stay back, but you trust these guys in the evaluation process. But isn't there still some of that? I gotta feel it, touch it around it myself. So now we're wasting time to a degree, right, because you might have been able to eliminate players one through fifteen off of this giant list because they don't fit something that you're looking for at that position, that isn't going to translate and maybe get filtered out because your guy, your position coach that you sent your talent evaluator is like, no, that's the guy. I had a good conversation with him, but maybe you don't exactly, and now you've wasted time by not being on the premises for that.
At least that's my evaluation. That's that's what I feel like.
I mean again, if at the end of the day, your position coach and all those people are going to matter, obviously should trust him and let them.
Do their job. But you're going to be the one on the hook.
So if you're not getting the right guy and the guy that you want for your system, then you're feeling you're feeling the whole team.
Although it is the the Cowboys, so you may have much longer leashes than than you ever thought.
Well maybe, although Bill Belichick is still kind of floating around, he's out there somewhere.
Maybe maybe he goes where Big Dom isn't uh. Coming up next, we go back into the NFL.
