This is the best of the Jason Smith Show with Mike Harmon on Fox Sports Radio.

Let's get it on another night here in the tyrack dot Com Fox Sports Radio Studios. My White Sox on the down side of a game against the Twins, which means my mood has gotten saltier because eventually I'm sinking down to those one hundred and twenty losses. Yeah on the here, but I'm trying to hold all year long. It's like, well, look, hope is a dangerous thing. I just to start seeing a little bit of you know, those graphics of hey, my starting pitchers have yet to give up an earned run, knowing eventually it's gonna come back on you. And normally it's not in a trickle that it becomes a title wave. And that's what we're talking about. It's Aeron Torres hit for Jason Smith tonight. As you heard yesterday, Smith a little bit under the weather and eventually the weather just toppled him. It would seem so at how about a fresca if you want to send him your good thoughts or curse him out or make fun of the fact that I believe the Mets loss to the Marlins today. So we got that in Aaron Underscore Torres where you find him the podcast, the network, the building, talking about the army of people working with him, and you know, as we're getting ready for the show, Aeron one of the things that came up. And I've always hated this day, yes, and as a thing, even as a kid, I hated this day April first, the April fools Like I love it on television shows and you know, prank shows have their space or whatever. Not for me, it's not my thing because generally I'm from an area in the South side of Chicago where if you do that to the wrong person, sure, I'm just gonna go with the simpler part of it. You're gonna get jacked up from a nice right hand hook. Or for me being a Southpaw, a rocky like left or where it can go really badly for you, and we'll just leave your imagination to television and film for all of that. But also in a place where we're trying to gather news and we're in a weird time right, There's a lot going on in the sporting universe. You're getting ready to get on a plane headed to San Antonio to cover the men's Final four, and we'll get into that in earnest, but we're talking about the transfer portal and all the names and schools and linking guys up coaches that are still moving about, some real, some imagined. Right as we go through today, it's like, Hey, did that guy really take a new job or is it an April Fool's joke? These people? Is it a movie that's coming out or is it a joke? This TV reboot which we've seen so many of them, is this legit or not? My kids got me with one over Glee, Oh leaks? Okay, Like I'm a big nerd. I was never in theater. I wasn't a theater kid. My older daughter was my younger daughter. She'll be mad at me if I said this, But she knows she's big into music and musicals, and and that's what we do, the three of us, live theater, sing alongs, in the car, rides, whatever else. But all of a sudden, here's a hey, after all these years, they're gonna green light a thing based on the Matthew Morrison who was the teacher and Glee And it's like, hey, I could get on board that. He's like, Noah, it's actually an April Fool's jokes, like you stink because that could have been fun. See where they are these years later, new cast, new songs, all these years of music that you can go in and use to create this rich tapestry. Now I got got And that's the most innocuous of them, because there's so many others. Again, with the transfer portal and trying to report on that's true, prepare for the show, I was like, all right, is this guy really in wait, he's getting a seventh year of eligibility, that's real, right, Hunter Dickinson and going on. But all of that, it's like, all right, trying to parse out what's real what's imagined.

I woke up to Rick Patino retiring from a Saint John's account, you know, that one didn't really make sense to me. It's like, Saint John's this is the only relevant thing that is ever gonna happen to your entire athletic department, probably for the next fifty years.

Why are you wish.

Casting it to end like like like there's a funny there's a funny April fools, Saint John's something, you know, John Caliperi retires to take assistant coaching job with Rick Patino. I don't know there's something clever there, pushing the only great coach you're ever gonna have for the next fifty years out the door. I don't know that that's the joke that I want to lead with. You know, I was I never did stand up comedy. I know some a lot of people have. Are our buddy VJ. Husky, who's in this building all the time, is done stand up comedy. You don't want to lead with one that may be a little bit of a clunker and fall flat. And I'm sorry Saint John's Twitter account. I don't know where the thought process on Rick Patino announcing his retirement was funny in any or clever or creative in any way, shape or form.

Well, you know, you can talk about the last five minutes he'd like to retire his coaching decision. Sure, yeah, hey, all of that to say, yeah, you're riding a crest as far as of a wave, as far as your organization, and you're actually back on the map, because otherwise it was Chris Mullin back when he had a full head of hair. That's what I'm last time they were relevant, it would have been.

Like if Nick saban took the Washington State job and then Washington State fans are like April falls Nick Sabon's or I can't even make an analogy because there is no other analogy of a coach that good at a program that would be otherwise that irrelevant without him. But that was what I woke up to. Now I knew right away it wasn't an April. I figured out within a half a second of opening the link that somebody sent me that it was an April fool's joke. But it didn't any more any the less make it any less funny than it actually.

Well, because here's another one, and this one actually had to be true because I went through and did the deep dive and said Tom Brady's no longer the greatest quarterback of all time. H oh, And I said, wait a minute, what mean what are we talking about? And it turns out in the NFL owners meeting, this comes to pass that the All American Football Conference, the All America leave off the End Football Conference from forty six to forty nine, that the statistics from this league will now be incorporated into the NFL rule books. Therefore, the Browns winning all four of the See the Browns actually come into play here for our guy, tysan Go. They won all four of the championships from forty six to forty nine. So now Brady's championship mark is now tied by former Northwestern great Otto Graham. There you go, But it gets me to get the Cats in. But yeah, so those four titles in Cleveland now are added to the three he won with the Browns in fifty, fifty four and fifty five to give him seven titles, thereby tying him with Tom Brady. So no longer stands alone at seven titles. So that is a real story. That is a real story. But sure I had to do the Dutch because when I saw just the headline, it's like, wow, that's that's kind of an interesting tweet, but that can't be right because it talked about titles going, you know, being added, and it's like, is this a real thing? Because we know there's a bunch of votes and we'll get into some of the votes that were tabled, some of the things and changes that are coming to an NFL near you. But now this is is a real thing. Brady and Graham playing ten Championship games, seven and three entitled games. So while Brady still has the most Super Bowls, we now talk about Championship one and Championship Game appearances. Otto Graham is now tied with Tom Brady. There's a big change in your landscapes.

Coming out of retirement. Just be ready, it's probably gonna happen. He could still be a better quarterback than how many in the league? How many starters would he better?

At? Serious question, advanced stage.

Serious question because I know this will be a topic. You're Mike Tomlin. You can have forty eight ish year old Tom Brady or forty oneish year old Aaron Rodgers next year.

Who do you want? I'd take Tom Brady kind of think I might too. I got listen my whole I know what he's gonna come into as as here's how I do things. Sure he'll be as opposed to what's going on on the outside that I bring in if I'm bringing in Aaron Rodgers.

Yeah, and that's what I was gonna say. Is the thing I would add to is that say what you want. He's gonna be a professional, He's gonna show up on time, He's not gonna be doing drugs in the offseason. You know, you go on and on down the list of the benefits of Tom Brady versus the negative surrounding Aaron Rodgers, And yeah, I think I probably would too. I actually think I probably would take Tom Brady as.

Well, curiosity and certainly the year in the broadcast booth and removed from the game as he's been. But you can't tell me he's still not probably throwing. And that's been one of the things, right, Aaron Rodgers has been seen throwing to DK metcalf and and we'll get into Rogers some of the Rooney comments and everything else. He was hanging out with Jay Glazer, our buddy as part of some giant circle of trust, including Mike Tomlin, including Andy Reid, including a number of coaches as part of the coaches gathering here because they did their class photo. Sure that came out the other day. But as Glazer went with his phone showing all of these people and luminaries together, just like, all right, can I get one or two questions with each of them about their their teams? And then back to Rogers because immediately I had to take a screenshot of Rogers to see what his hat said. Oh, okay, it was for some brand.

Do you.

Did you see the video of Tomlin yesterday? He had to have been coming out of a sauna. It was an interview and it was about Rogers, and it was pouring sweat, and I was like, I didn't take the thirty seconds to google the context behind it. But it's like, poor guy was just he was not carry it.

So, I mean, you know, part of it is you're you're just sweating profusely as you walk out your front door. Sure, but certainly I mean, look, if you go down the the other rabbit holes are like, is Mike Tomlin sick? There you go, No, he's in Florida, he's stressing about Tom Brady. He was not under the hot lights of an Andy Sipowitz and uh, the Brethren YPD Blue. Wow, I've started Rewatchinghy's part of my my binge. Watching a lot of the news shows don't capture my imagination. I need to catch up. Obviously, there's a lot of White Lotus talk in the building, a little bit over our daughters. Yeah, so I've got to get into a White Lotus person. I haven't gotten into it. So watch one or two episodes. I will be real enough. Stars that can get my interests. They are people that I usually like what they're in.

So I Season three is obviously out and people were raving about it. So I was like, I gotta go watch season one and my wife had already watched it, so I started it. I was like, this is weird and not what I thought it was gonna be, but she was like, no, it gets better. So I force fed myself through season one and she's like, you want to watch season two?

And I was like no, I'm good.

I was like, I have no, no, no emotional attachment to these people and all the people that I like are going to be part of season two anyway.

So I was like, oh, pretty good. Yeah, yeah, because I know generally TV movie is she getting you?

You know?

I mean, well, no, no, no.

I mean, I like a good series here and there. I'm not a big movie guy. Okay, we're rewatching Shit's Creek right now. We've seen that one a hundred times. We've seen How I Met your Mother. We've seen uh, you know, I Got Her An Entourage, which was a fun rewatch for me. So, you know, the lighter comedy stuff. Like you said, they don't make comedies, they don't make dramas like they used to. So I'm trying to think outside of White Lotus. The last drama that we watched watch Power. That was a good one. Okay, that's one I wouldn't rewatch though it's a little It was good in real time, but it was just dark, dark and darker, and so it's just like every episode was a little sadder and more depressing. And it's like, I don't know that i'd rewatch that again.

It was great, it was a great watch. I don't know that it's gonna be a rewatch. You can't say I've gone down that rabbit hole. Perhaps it's good. It's an very good shown. Yeah, we're broadcasting live from the tyrag dot com studios. Something I'll always go back to tyrag dot com we'll help you get there an unmatched selection, fast free shipping, free road azer protection, over ten thousand recommended installed tire act dot com the way tire buying should be. Yeah, I signed up for a letterboxed account, and I just have to be filling all the stuff that I watch. Sure, because when the girls and I are together we binge watch things. And my younger one, Again, maybe I'm giving too much of her persona away from what you know, the hard exterior she gives as a center back. She loves a good rom com. Sure, who knows that there's a good, you know, well written one, But you go back to the classics because again it's a lost art and a lot of your they don't make the rom com stars don't want to be part and pigeonholed in that world anymore. So that might be where I end up trying to apply my writing acumen, or attempted acumen, is to create a new world of rom coms. There is a vast need forhim.

And I watch all of these, and I know we have to talk about actual sports here, but every time a wedding Crashers comes on, Super Bad comes on, I'm like, these are so funny. Why can we not make just a funny movie and not worry about offending people?

Well, because we had a couple of years where everybody, if one person, you know what defends Look, I would never be able to utter another sentence on Fox Sports right now if those if those rules were applied to radio, Hi at Swollen Dome, if you offended by something I say tonight, please dude, let me know.

Great segment, Probably not for sports talk radio. The best movies that could never be remade in twenty twenty.

Four, Oh no, no, we got, we get. We'll thread those in over the course of the night, blazing saddles as we get thanks rolling here.

Yeah, I think about Missus Doubtfire, Like think about the concept of Missus doubt Fire.

Could not be remade.

Now, Wedding Crashers, great movie, funniest movie I've ever seen.

Couldn't remake it right now? To offensive, just think about it, Go to Toutsie, go to go all the way down the line. You got, you got a lot of things that we would leave folks raising their hand going what are we doing?

Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith Show with Mike harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio.

You four time shoots one the other way from base it Lopez around third hanging home. It's booted by Soto in right field. The Mets Core defense continues. We won today? What what is?

What is? We won today?

That's fine? Oh my god, is this gonna be? Oh, this is gonna be every day?

Welcome back?

Oh, welcome inside.

Okay, So you're playing Harlem Globetrotter music for for the Mets. Okay, that's the wrong sport. That's the wrong sport. That's not Yeah, yeah it is.

What are the Harlem g Choppers?

You're gonna say, Hobo Hobo Homo hobo.

Lobe Trotter, Globe trott that's a new cartoon. I'm gonna start drawing.

Let me ask you this tight shirt. What sport do you think the Globe Trotter's play?

Oh you're funny basketball?

Oh okay, good, okay, very good? Are you? And what's sport to the Mets play?

I have no idea.

Yeah, well that's true, Ron Darling.

Yeah, we're live the Tirack dot Com Studios. Diirect dot com will help you get there an unmatched selection, fast, free shipping, free road hazard protection, and over ten thousand recommended installers. Tirect dot com is the way tire buying should be for him. Yeah, No, there was not a lot yesterday that I was aware of in the world of sport.

I'll tell you what.

Midway of the show Monday Night, I was in a bit of a fever haze, like there's there's parts of Monday Night that are a.

Little hazy, uh, show wise, I was like, whoa this is?

I think he wrote that down right. Rosberger is like twenty fifty two of our two Snell gave up man.

Yeah, that's uh, yeah, I was. I was.

It was a It was a good like twelve or fourteen hours, like I'm in trouble here.

Uh you know, do you see a doctor?

No? No, I didn't have.

I won't check you out. I mean, what's going on on?

Yeah?

My dad.

My dad would show some things and just stand around and go, I don't know what to do here. No, it was just like brought a cold back from from the you know, my holiday last week and Monday I'm like, okay, great, I'm feeling okay, feeling okay. Then like midway through the show, I was like, oh wow, I'm really hot. I am burning up, and yeah, a lot of the show is hazy, so we're okay.

Then I think we're all.

Right, all right, hazy shit of spring.

Yes yesterday had no voice. You know, you ate a lot of soup. And now I'm ready to go back tonight. More ready tonight than Blake Snell was, that's for sure.

Well sharp as attack already sharp.

Uh so yeah, Ono Tawny Bobblehead MVP Bobblehead Day, where despite the fact that every Dodger fan who attended tonight's game was getting a bobblehead, there was still a line that was a half mile long at one o'clock in the afternoon outside Dodgers Day.

But you know what, there there was a divide in terms of information because there was the the rumbling out there that there was only going to be forty thousand of them.

But then they they made sure everybody no, it could but then you already lined up, but for everybody coming in. Yeah, but by then I could leave. Oh it's only one thirty, I'm gonna.

Leave it here.

Are you gonna go McDonald's.

Yeah, I'll go to McDonald's and come back.

I mean you could have gone and hung out and Duley's plays over at the short stop for a bit, had a couple of quick ones, and.

Pretty sure the one off Vince Scully Wade doesn't have a ballpitch, isn't it.

That's all right?

I would I would just order off the secret McDonald's menu as long as it's still there now, and I would have lived. Okay, I could come back because I'm getting a bobblehead. I'm okay, I'm getting up. I know I'm getting a bobblehead.

They got the former John Berger. Did they have any of the gold ones this time around? And that and any of the chase?

No do it.

I want to start a rumor, which is not something you should do on sports talk, but I want to start pad. I want to start a rumor that like there were like a hundred special Torpedo bat oh Tawny bobble heads that were given away today, Like, oh, if you get one of the the special O Tawny ones with that, and what you could do is, now, if you really wanted to, if you really wanted to do it, is you would like shave off the top of the bat and make it look like a torpedo bat.

No, here's the MVP torpedo bow.

Oh my god, I'm selling on an eBay for ten thousand dollars and someone by it.

What is really cool is yesterday you could have done that.

Yeah, yeah, well yesterday.

If I really did it and sold it, I couldn't tell the next day, oh hey, that ten grand you sent me April fool.

Not well, you would have had to start tinkering with a bobble head and getting out into you know, your little work room right working on the workbench and shaving off parts of a bat that's part of an o tawny bobblehead, drocating things on your three D printer.

I would call it, Hey, how do I get out of this? I'm in trouble here. I'm like the most hated man. I gotta call Zach Hampell. He was the only guy less hated than I was. Well, how do I get out of something like that?

It's all really just a question of how many of those you would have sold, because and depending on how you would have termed it. Because where you're having in the trading card world right now, guys are getting really good and printers are getting better, so you're getting people making custom cards. Here's the card that never was right. So here's from this guy's rookie year. Well, they didn't actually make a card of him until three years later. Or here's a movie from nineteen eighty five. Let's make a nineteen eighty five card. People that are unaware of the marketplace like, oh, that's a really cool rookie card of insert movie star here. It's like, it's not a real card except that, you know, some artists put it together. So it's not worth a thousand dollars you're spending. But it is because it's an art card, and it's a custom card as opposed to an actual official nineteen eighty five tops card. You know, a weird spot there.

It's worth it because that's what someone paid for it. Wait wait, wait no, no, no, no, that's what it's worth.

But it's the question of the legitimacy of you know, was it an actual issued card or is it an art card? And if you put the details out and they don't choose to read, then you can go fight in court.

Yeah no, see, I'm just thinking about the missed opportunities I missed out on with the Otani bobble I would have had to get the real bobble heads, and then I would have had to shave the bats, shave the tops of the bats off a little bit, and then sell them and do it all.

But if you bought a hundred of them and then deciding to do that out there, you know on Art by Smith so logo, and you know, you pull out a can of spray paint all right, you start going all pollock on the box and stuff and suddenly you've got a limited edition thing and you're not lined anybody in Vietnam though, So that's a seventy tariff right there?

Oh yeah, nothing, yeah, oh well they would have come over before today. No, that's what I have been sitting there. I mean, look, the ones for September are somewhere on the grounds. Yeah, just a ship there in the back of the parked outside your house. Yeah yeah, yeah, no, if it's if it's in the country before today, it's absolutely fun.

That was yesterday, maybe not so much today. It's official, right, Uh.

So while we have that, while we're too cause you know, there is more to talk about with the with the Otani bobblehead.

We are now.

Three goals away from absolute history in the NHL tonight televised on TNT True TV. The game was on like four channels because hey, you never know when Alex Ovechin can get a hat trick. He is now three goals away from breaking the all time record Wayne Gretzky's all time record of eight ninety four. After this goal in a five to one blowout lost tonight to the Carolina Hurricanes, thirty.

Five seconds to go on the periods.

Stop, he real dog number.

Eight ninety two. Tarmers are showing his family.

His wife is getting tapped up by Carrie Petman.

Everybody's on a horse.

Putin's out, no shirtless on a horse behind him, riding around.

It's great, that's the bobblehead you've been waiting on. Uh, thekin will be honest, you know, behind him.

Now, that would be that would be what you all? Okay, wait a minute, So that's one bobblehead. Is Ovechkin with his with his hands raised after the goal and Putin on a horse.

Yeah, that's one bobblehead.

One bobble head together, kind of like when Wayne Boggs was getting ridden around by the by the police officer after the Yankees won the World Series.

Now, look, the greatest record in hockey is about to be broken. Right, this transcend sports. It's the greatest record this sport has. And even if people who aren't hockey fans know about Wayne Gretzky and his goal record of eight ninety four, and here comes Alex Ovechkin, who's been an NHL superstar. You know, he's thirty nine years old. Now he's won a Cup, he's one Hart Trophies, he's been first team All NHL. Look, the guy's gonna wind up having the record for most goals in NHL history, and it's going to happen sometime the next couple of games. He can smell it. He's been on kind of a goal every other game pace this season, and now he's a little bit ahead of it. So he needs three and he still has enough games to.

Do it again.

I want to say, in a blowout loss to the Carolina Hurricane tonight, who just showed showed the Capitals who was boss in this big showdowns? Want to say that, But still he is no goals away. And honestly, how I feel about this, I just I feel just met. I don't I'm not upset about it. I'm not you know, Oh, Gretzky's gonna have his record broken, and Ovechkin's not the player Gretzky was, which nobody is. Look, you can you cannot count any of Wayne Gretzky's goals, count zero goals. He still has more points than anybody who's ever played the game. I'm just thinking about that for a second. Take away all of his goal the goal scoring leader. Take away all his goals, and he still has more points than anybody who's ever played the game. So I don't feel that way. I don't feel that he's not worthy because Ovechkin's a terrific goal scoring Look, go look back and see what Gretzky's goal scoring prowess was like once he hit thirty years old. Like, Gretzky didn't score many goals. I don't think he scored two hundred goals from the time he was thirty one till he retired. And Novechkin's up up at at like three seventy. Like, he scored like three hundred and seventy goals since he's turned thirty. Right, he's gonna he's gonna pass this record. He's gonna own it, Yeah.

Depending on what We're not sure and Smith that would ask and then ask a lot of questions about you. Yeah, it's not much.

Oh, it's maybe, that's what it is. It's a beat. It's beat soup every day. It's every single day. I have beat soup every.

Morning, blood stuff and and a way we go.

But it's it's because Ovechkin is a great player right watching his whole career, is a phenomenal goal scorer, phenomenal player. I love hockey. I just I feel like, Okay, it's cool he's breaking it. But I'm not filled with the normal emotion I would be of so and so about to break a record, about to break one of the all time records, not just a record, but the biggest hockey record there is, you know, and and I and I don't know. Maybe I'll feel differently as it as it gets right upon us, because now clearly he could do it in any game a hat trick. He is probably not gonna get a hat trick, but three goals away, and and there's still more than enough time for him to do it. I he's probably gonna get it sometime in the next maybe by this weekend, all right, Like again. He still has time. He's got like six or seven games left. But when he passes, I don't know how I'm gonna feel. But I'm not gonna feel upset. I'm not gonna feel crazy. I'm not gonna feel.

Through the moon.

I don't know what it is, and it's not anything the fact that he's rushing or resist.

Yes.

No, he's been a big superstar throughout his entire career. He's done. He's validated everything right well, like I said, the the art Ross trophies and the MVPs and the Stanley Cup that he's won in the first team, all all NHL. Like he's done everything. He's done everything you want to do is be the captain. His teammates love him. I don't know why it's did I always want Gretzky to have the record. Sure, but in my life I know that even the greatest of great records are gonna be broken.

And but I don't mean it.

I just I don't have a feel other than, oh, here's a record that's gonna be broken. We're gonna cover it, we're gonna talk about it. Like look, Capitals fans are excited. A lot of NHL fans are excited. A lot of NHL fans are not because they want Gretzky to have the record because he's Wayne bleeping Gretzky, and I understand that, but I'm just kinda it's weird. I want to give you a hot take. I want to give you a big hay this this he's not worthy all courd he's worthy. He's a better goal scorer than Gretzky ever was. But in the end, I'm kind of like, yeah, it's just gonna happen. And it's weird that I feel that way. And I've been kind of asking myself that question the last couple of days, and I just can't come up with an answer.

I just like, okay, I.

Feel like, okay, am I overall when it comes to records not what it was when I was younger. Do I not feel the same way about records? That could be it?

You know?

I mean, I was excited the fifty to fifty with Otani. We'd never seen that before, and all these different things, But you know, I don't know, maybe that's the case of it. It's a weird thing, and I keep thinking about it and I don't have the answer.

I hope the Russians love their children too. Is that where you're going, You're going full staying while we're out. Yeah, yeah, let's go back to the Cold War nineteen eighty three. Cannot see sad shit too much seen film and television references. Look, I think some of it we can tie directly to our watching of the NBA right now and some of the Jokic U and that whole face of the NBA thing. Right we're watching Oklahoma City early on against Detroit right now and shay gilges Alexander. He's a Canadian, but he's still not an American, So can he be the face of the NBA? And look, we could do that topic like so many shows before us, for hours on end. We're not gonea but that's part of it, is the you know, who's the guy that you elevate and for Gretzky again not American but certainly lives down the street. But it's just the idea that that is the face of a game that is decades talk about games changing and rules of engagement changing, and how we look at it through the prism of all right, well, the game's not the same as it was then. So when records fall, we don't hold them to the same level. Like the home runs and like Otani was just fifty to fifty is just something completely nobody's expecting to come out of left field. Right, This isn't just hey, he went and hit seventy four home runs with his torpedo or not, right, no matter what the case was, it's not a record that we held sacred. And even then during the steroid human growth hormone whatever guys were injecting and putting on their bodies, you know, a lot of it was all right, I'm just sitting marvel with the hand eye coordination and how far the ball's flying. Because clearly everybody around Major League Baseball didn't give a damn until suddenly they did when Congress came a knocking as a whole thing into pharmaceuticals. But I don't think we hold records the same way. And for Gretzky, you can always just say, well, he was a better score overall, and you point all the assists and everything else, and maybe there's a tinge of the hey it's the Russian guy, the foreign born guy. Maybe maybe that's sitting there. And I just don't think that we hold records quite the same way, right, look at the the thunder or having other than bj Armstrong and some of the guys that were on those Bulls squads and maybe a couple of guys piping up from Golden State. Is anybody really watching that? No, they're talking about how the game's changed and teams quit and everything else. So the same thing applies here. It's like, is the game different? Is it easier to score than it used to be? And I guess we could start doing the metrics from there.

Yeah, I mean I wish I could. I had a better answer, you know, I wish I had a better answer. I just I just don't. I'm like, Okay, it's gonna happen and all right, and really I don't know.

I don't know why.

Like I said, I've been asking myself that question last couple days agoing about to see this record that I've it's been held. I remember watching Gretzky set the record and it was incredible, and I just feel, Okay, I don't.

It's again, really really weird.

Sorry, buddy, that's right.

What's happening? But how are you man?

Hey, how are you man?

Great?

Well, I wish the Knicks could beat a good team, but outside of that, you know, I'm okay.

Well, we've we've already had this conversation.

You said that, like like I'm your son, and I did something like you said, hey, you know, don't don't go into the cookie jar. And I went in the cookie jar again, and you said, listen, we've already had this conversation about going into the.

Cookie jar exactly exactly. I mean, guy, you know, hey, if you eat the whole box of cookies, you know you're gonna put on five pounds. That's just what you know. It's kind of the way it works. And that's kind of where the Knicks are right. They're they're not going to be a good team. I mean, we look, we had this conversation before, you know it. It's a little bit it's a little bit like you know what, when you break curfew and you don't get home at time, then you're you know, you're not going to get the car the next time. That's the way it is. Okay, it's all right.

I want you to know you asked how I was doing, and I told you, like, I mean, you're the one that asked, so I told you I was I'm going to tell you the truth all the time.

Yeah.

No, I appreciate that. But you're you're sort of complaining about something that we've already established. You know, it's just it's.

Science, Rick, It's science, all right. So how about speaking of something we've covered before? H Ja Moran tonight all right? A day after he was warned about the finger gun gesture two suspensions for brandishing a gun on social media, he gets off light. He decides, I don't care, I'm gonna do the finger gun gesture again tonight. Anyway, he does it a couple of times in the game, first quarter.

He couldn't wait to do it.

Hits the game winning shot like in a nutshell, Rick, Like, this is John Moran, incredibly talented. But I don't know how much longer the guy's going to be in the league because he just doesn't seem to get it. And I don't know that Adam Silver can't do anything but suspend him after this because John Moran has dared him to do it after he got after he let him off light earlier today.

Yeah, I mean, I don't want to take any anything, you know, I don't know, distract from Jahn Morant, but if you look at everything that the Grizzlies organization has done, I can't help but feel that, you know, the way we thought about jam Morant when he came into the NBA was not like this, Like we were talking about him as potentially being the face of the league at some point. He had the game and he had the personality, and we didn't see any of you know, we didn't see any of this behavior or just you know, stubborn. I'm going to do what I want to do. And I can't help but go back to the way the Memphis Grizzlies handled everything from the beginning, which I think is just a microcosm of the way that organization has has operated. And then you know, going to just recently, like the firing of their coach, you know, with a big game against the Lakers coming up, and with them in the midst of trying to feel or secure home court advantage in the playoffs, it's I can't help but feel like the Grizzlies organization has a hand in what Jaw has become. That there hasn't been any attempt to cultivate him as a pro. And then if you don't do that, if you if you just allow anything goes and then guys get paid and they have they have financial security, well then it's going to become even more difficult to get guys in line. So I just I'm mystified. I'm mystified that he would continue down this down this road considering where the Grizzlies are and what they have at stake. But on the other hand, I'm really not surprised, just because I feel like, you know, the Grizzlies have created them on and I don't know how you downsize at this point.

But now the door is open with Zion shut down this stuff with John Morant. Kobe White's going to be the best guy from the twenty nineteen class. Rick Buker, what's that He's going to be the last man standing as the best guy from what was supposed to be the loaded twenty nineteen draft.

Yeah, yeah, no doubt.

Rick Buker just crushed your world. Mike Harbon World. I'm crushing. That's what he did right there.

What someone must rise from the abyss in truth?

There is the your mic or the way I'm hearing. Your mic has a lot of statics, and so I actually didn't understand a word that you said, but I agree with you.

Wow, Okay.

Then I will always have your back mic, no matter what.

I appreciate you, Rick, that is my guy.

See I like that.

In other words, and I could say what I want to say or in said, I'll just say I didn't understand what you were saying.

Let's move on. You know it's weird.

You know it's weird, Jason. I can hear you clearly like I don't know what that is. In fact, Oh okay, And if I had control over it, i'd slip it around because I kind of you know, I don't have to hear Jason to know what Jason is saying. That's I know it's going to be about the Knicks, and I know he's going to complain about where they are, and you know I can just respond in time.

Yeah, I'm the friends you don't need to talk to to have a conversation with.

Its exactly right, exactly right, just send me the send me the cliff notes. What do we what? What's the conversation about? Okay, Jason, I already know. I'll play the tape, play the tape from last time. We're good, all right?

So look, so what what do you think is going to be the outcome of the finger gun tonight with with John Moran?

Because I mean, I don't know how Adam.

Silver saves face unless it's anything other than a suspension, Because yeah, because he dared him to do something. He dared him to that by doing the finger guns.

Has to be and the and this, and you know you said it at the beginning, you know, I feel I felt like he dodged uh being punished the last time. And I and I can't help that. The NBA feels as if like they really test them, they see which way the wind's blowing. I feel as if a lot of the response that the NBA has now in terms of player decorum is how's it playing in the public. If the public is outraged, then we got to do something about it. And if they're not, then okay, let's let's see if we can. Let's see if it'll die down by itself. And but at this point. This is this is John Moran going directly at the at the commissioner and saying you can't control me. And Adam is not David Stern by any means, but I would. I just don't. I don't see why you. I don't see why you do this at this point. I mean, this is a critical part of the season, and you're going to risk, You're gonna dare the commissioner to suspend you when your team needs you. At this point. It's it's really hard for me to reconcile this jamarrant with the jamarant that I thought of just like two three years ago. And and that's why I'm struggling to answer it, because it's just it feel. It feels perfectly in character with the guy we've seen the last year or two and perfectly out of character with the guy that that we first were introduced to when he joined the NBA.

Rick.

We're watching the Warriors and Lakers finish things off here, I either a real real threat up at the top there. I mean, you're watching the Warriors getting some scoring from beyond a step.

Yep.

Yeah, It's an interesting dynamic. I do feel like the Western Conference is really going to be about matchups. Who you see and when you see them, and I they're all they all have flaws I have. It's been intriguing for me to watch this game and I'll see how how they close. I felt like the Lakers' size, even though they sort of play small when Jackson Hayeses isn't on the floor, but they're bigger. They can play bigger small ball with Lebron and Ruey at the power positions and Luca playing point forward and I and then I thought that was that and I think in a in a playoff series that would that would win out. But then there's just there's always the chemistry and the system that the Warriors play, and they're very smart unlike Houston and Memphis. Is that they've tried to play as fast as possible, and that's what you need to do. You need to make the Lakers play transition defense because that is clearly one of their big weaknesses.

All right, so.

Let's go out of the NBA here. We have the final four coming up this weekend. I know you got some bit on on the Ball podcast. Been talking to people about Cooper Flagg's NBA future.

What are you hearing comps with with Cooper Flag? Is he definitely coming out? Is he going back to Duke?

Like?

What have you been hearing about Cooper Flag?

Yeah? I mean we hear this. I've heard this before where guys are like, maybe I'll stay and when you're gonna be the number one pick, you know, at some point you just reality hits in the face and you go ahead. Can't pass this up. So I don't have any expectation that he's going to go and spend another year in college. It would make no sense that if he did that. Said that, you know, the comp that I've heard that at first I wasn't really buying, but that that I've kind of warmed too is Andre Kierlenko. And I think with a little more playmaking ability. I don't see him as a like. I don't see him as a generational or a guy that you like, is your number one, build around the team? Do everything I think he can be. He can be your he can be part of your core of a of a certainly a playoff team. Maybe even a championship team. He can do everything. But and what I love about him is just his competitive fire and that the fact that he can play on the ball or off the ball. The reason that I don't see him as being this like franchise type player that you build around is I don't think he's in a in one on one and I think you've seen it in the tournament, his ability to just take guys one on one. He doesn't quite have that kind of a game and and so I think that that's that's the one one element that he that that leaves him short of being a franchise player. But I can't wait to see him play because I think, you know, we don't have we don't have a lot of It feels like we don't have a lot of high.

I Q.

American born players at this point. We have we have these. He's not he's he's not an AAU type player. He plays a much more elevated game than that. And uh, and I think that's where we need to go and we need to develop more Cooper flags so that we have a chance of continuing our reign in in international basketball.

To that, and Rick, what did you think of the commissioner talking about European leagues and interest them.

Yeah. I mean, look, I've said this a couple of times. I feel like, you know, everybody looks at NBA TV ratings here and ticket sales and all that, and I just get the get the sense that the NBA feels that they've tapped the market, the US market, and that if they're going to have any growth with whether whether it's revenue or anything else, it's going to have to be internationally and globally. And that's I think that's what's what's behind this is that they're recognizing, you know what, we're never going to beat the NFL in the US, but there is a global appeal to our game, and why don't we tap the fact that the best players in the NBA right now are all international players. That only makes sense. Let's build, you know, let's expand and and and let's let's create a footprint overseas.

Yeah, Eric, I feel like we got lucky we got the gold medal last year with Steph because now France is going to win for the next like, you know, three or four Olympics.

I mean, you're you're not that far off it. I don't know, where we go. You know, who's who are the players that we're going to count on to to lead us somewhere internationally. I think you're I think you're spot on, and it's and and maybe it needs to happen for us to recognize that we need to start developing players here in a different way than we have the last ten to fifteen years.

What do we have? We get the quad shot coming up? We need to talk about Lebron James saying that he does not get a whistle. We've got some evidence that would suggest otherwise. He's never been lower than in the top ten percent of players in free throw attempt his entire career. A little bit of that the credibility of Lebron James will be adjudicated.

The lake is on Rick Buker's Twitter page at Rick Buker to the On the Ball Podcast. There's your Lebron James debate. Rick is always buddy appreciated man. We'll talk to you next week.
