This is the best of the Jason Smith Show with Mike Harmon on Fox Sports Radio.

Hey greetings, Welcome in end of week seventeen of your National Football League season. For some of these markets, the long national nightmare will end our local nightmare that turn national for some me. I'm a Bears fan. You know my paid all too well. Welcome in another beautiful edition to Jason Smith Show with Me Mike Carman. No Jason Smith Tonight back on Thursday in earnest as we get ready to approach a brand spanking new year. In his stead, my guy Dan Beyer, my co host on the eyewaanch Reflex podcast. You hear him each and every day alongside Doug Gottlieb Cavino and Rich and then Sundays Red Zone Radio alongside carry Rhodes and Dan, Are you gonna play better defense than either of the teams participating in Monday Night Football.

I'll tell you what, I hope I'm not as bad as the Lions, but like the Lions, and we'll be bringing out some trick plays over the next four hours, including Mike a feud later on in the show.

We always have to get the family together. We've got the usual combatants mixed here in. We've got our guy alex Ty shirt on the board, Steve de Seger at the news desk, and Shay in for our guy Frostburg. He'll be back. The hangover from the Chargers advancing to the playoffs should have worn off by then. So all of that to say, twenty one twenty one, midway through the third quarter, as we've watched brock Purty, plenty of time to throw, plenty of space in a beleaguered, battle worn secondary for the Detroit Lions, no teeth up front in terms of pass rush, given party time to throw, and he's hitting everybody and you know, Pierce all everything they wanted out of the first pick, except you know, missing those games because of the gunshot one.

I hate to say it, Mike But is this that the forty nine er fans have been waiting for all season long? Like this this somewhat version of the forty nine ers, and now they do it in Week seventeen with nothing to play for and having been eliminated, and now they're in the end zone again. It's just this is the forty nine ers team that you would have hoped by saying that. We also realize what you touched off on the top the Lions defense, that's not going to be the issue, not only for this next week coming up with that game against the Vikings, but wherever they end up being in the NFC playoff picture, because that is their bugaboo.

Still waiting for that to be determined quite obviously with what they've got cooking today twenty seven to twenty one, with the extra point pending here into the end zone. Party his third passing touchdown. He also had a rushing touchdown is fifty the year there earlier in the game. But all of that to say, you know, for the forty nine ers, still the rock party show. Still want to put some great stuff on tape, show what you can do. And it's not the not the same as Week twelve. I get it. But you know, for everybody that was starting to jump off the bandwagon in San Francisco of hey, him not And I mean that's been the huge national story going on the entire season. I can't pay that guy. It's like he's a quarterback, He's the next guy up. Yeah, are you trusting that behind door number two is going to be a quarterback to give you that same level of performance? Maybe it is, Maybe it is right Jimmy Garoppolo goes to to Brock party and here we are. But you know, at some point there's a glitch in the matrix and that formula doesn't work. Is as well, and certainly for the forty nine ers, a lot of expectations this year. Still on paper, I think we had a little bit of the maybe the run could end because of all the injury histories, because of all the contract squabbles in the offseason whatever, and all of that came to bear in the worst form of Brandon a you gets paid, causes issues the offseason, and then he's not even around to help weather the storm.

Yeah, it's it's been It's been a year of and Mike, when you really want to start out with it twenty twenty four can't leave soon enough for the San Francisco forty nine ers, because it all started with that Super Bowl overtime loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, but not a lot went right for them, and then when they felt like they were going to get right, when Trent Williams and Brandon Ayuk end up showing up and Ayuk ends up getting his deal, then things kind of go out the door. And you know, thoughts of Trent Williams and his family for what they're doing, but he's also battled injuries, he's older. Not that a left tackle, a veteran left tackle, missing training camp is anything new in the National Football League, but there were there were bumps and holes along this forty nine Ers road this entire offseason, and then they hit it during the season and it's just funny now in week seventeen to see them rolling and there's there may even be another question, Mike, and I know this is not in the nature of the NFL, and we'll talk about what happened with the college portion of it, but what does Brock Perdy have to play for right now? Does tonight's game prove to the forty nine ers that he is the guy against a siev like defense with Detroit because realistically, now brock Perty is sitting there and you're going to play because you're going to play football. But what does brock Purdy have to prove right now? Either the forty nineers are going to want to sign him or they're not going to want to sign them. I wouldn't want to risk any injury. I mean, we've seen Dac break a leg and the Cowboys still paid him. But I don't think it would be the same situation with Brock Party in San Francisco if you were to suffer an injury, whether it be this week against the Lions or next week against the Cardinals.

Now the happy accident or the way the Chips fall for him is the free agent market quite frankly stinks.

Yeah.

Right where we talk about quarterbacks coming in, we have two quarterbacks for the draft, at least that's where we're at now. Eventually three or four other guys will pop into the you know, low first round, front of the second round, no matter what anybody wants to say. Now, come April, it'll be a different tune and all of a sudden we'll have our risers. Even though they were there all along. But the rest of the free agent market is what do the Vikings do with Sam Darnold. That's it, That is literally it unless somebody gets dealt right, unless they decide, you know, Dallas rips rips things apart and Dak Prescott isn't there anymore or whatever, like there's nobody else like Zach Wilson's like.

QB two sure list Sure you think Pittsburgh's decided? Or is it just because Russell Wilson is who he is that it maybe doesn't come up as a realistic option.

Yeah, I think I have to punt on that.

Yeah, I mean scenario.

I don't think there was anything that showed me it was really ever great and special. Different now, George Pickens not being on the field to go catch the moon ball, as everybody loves to call it, certainly changed the complexion of your offense, There's no question about it. But to think Russ had rediscovered and hell, we've been debating you and I for years how much was Russ? How much was everything else?

Anyway?

Right going back to his days in Seattle and what you built around in Marshaw and Lynch, that defense, everything else. Take nothing away I don't think overall. I mean, the body of work is what it is, but in terms of driver and it's really all Russ driving or commanding the ship, whatever analogy you want to use, versus everything had to work in tandem to really make it work. And in Pittsburgh they got some more out of the run game, but the passage, Look, we watched it last year in Atlanta what they tried to do offensively to think that you're going to bring in a new coordinator and he was going to fix it when he left a lot of obvious problems in Atlanta with all that talent.

Well, I would also say, too, just to the point of whether you like it or not, it's just to your point that there aren't many quarterbacks available.

Yeah, no, that's just it, right, And maybe they decide Russ stays or they just and look, you could maybe run it back depending on the dollars sense. But I got to imagine both guys will be actively sought after in a marketplace because how many teams are still in dire need of efficient quarterbacking. Now those guys aren't going to be able to go and coach the final two minutes of haves and end of game scenarios, which maybe that should be the job they should start training for, because we certainly need a lot of those around the National Football League. But I guess it just comes to the point of rock Birdie's in the most beautiful of situations and the fact that he wants to go out here and maybe play a little bit of spoiler with whatever happens here with this game and next week for the for the Lions, and still be able to dictate a little of the end result of the NFC.

The hot take is, and I know you guys love them, Jason oways, you know hot take, God take hot take. That take is brock Perty shouldn't be playing in this game because the forty nine ers are gonna either have to decide. You know, they've made up their mind. But to your point, you're gonna beat the Lions, you're gonna play and right now he's playing. Well, I don't think like a game like this decides anything. Again, this game to me is it shouldn't be about the Lions, because the Lions really don't have the dog in the fight unless they feel like they need to keep that competitive momentum going. But it does turn into a forty nine ers conversation as well, when I at least talk about their quarterback.

Oh, and that's it, you know. And with Purty again, it's the the marketplace as a whole. It's his own personal pride. Maybe he's got incentives to hit. I don't know what his contract looks like. We all know he doesn't make a ton of money, right, We've been keenly aware of that for quite some time, and every conversation that gets spawned about him. But you know, it's one of those scenarios whereby as a player, I mean, you're a football player, yep, you won't play like that. I think the only time a guy doesn't is when the management folks get in the way and say, no, no, this is really for your own good forty nine ers aren't doing it. Yeah, and for him, like again, incentives or just personal pride or whatever the case is, and being able to start every game and everything. You know, there's a million other reasons beyond the surface.

And I fully expect him to not only complete this game, but to also then again play next week against the Cardinals. But we talk about the Lions maybe should be sitting guys because of what they have against the Vikings coming up on Sunday night. The forty nine ers in their own financial deals, and again we'll get into the college game later on, but it isn't too different. But I just the take is that he shouldn't be playing. But I'm not trying to go down the hot take road, just the simple fact of there's not much for brock perty to play for, and if you're the forty nine ers, you're just gonna have to figure out what that number is for him. And I actually don't think it's as far off as people have talked about that. That's the discussion for now, but still it's a meaningless game for the forty nine ers and they are showing up tonight against the Lions. It's only taking them sixteen plus weeks.

Mike losers of five of their last six. The only win in there Bears and a throttling there that was reminiscent of a two thousand game that I attended. Dan Oh, Yeah, that was Jerry Rice's final home game as a forty nine er. Terrell Owens caught twenty balls and the Bears didn't get the ball past midfield thanks Kate.

McNown Candlestick would be a top three stadium. I would want rebuilt so I could see what it was like.

It's terrible, and getting out of there was even like it was what I've heard. It really encapsulates a lot of the complaints that we have about the venues here in Los Angeles. Just a little bit north getting out of there, terrible one road coming out, Yeah, could take you three hours to get off the little little inlet there to h to get back to the highway and move on. Oftentimes we would get a cab drop us off, and we'd walk the rest of the way, just keep going, just keep driving by. It's like I can't pull over on the side of a freeway. Does it look like it's moving. I'm jumping off here and I'm walking the rest of the way.

I tried to take the two ten. I try to take the back way out and.

Try to be sneaky.

Yeah. Yeah, And now it's up towards where I live. So see, it's even better. It works so well for you.

There you go twenty eight, twenty four, four to twenty five Remaning and Party two seventy nine and three. Also the rushing touchdown. Hey, it's Fantasy Championship Week. Maybe he also didn't want to let down the percentage that would still be banking on him.

And there are a lot, a lot of parties in this game, George Kittle, I guarantee there's been some grendo plays you mentioned party, We've got Jamison, William was aman Ra, Jamir Gibbs.

Petershall probably found his way into some up sure. So all those fantasy ramifications, we'll get into some of the Week seventeen heroes and busts and who screwed you during Championship Show if you want to get those in at Dan Byron Fox, at Swollen Dow.

And this just in Jason McIntyre's team that was only down by three. He just tweeted it with a picture of his score. So for those of you wondering at home, just the ridiculousness.

For those keeping track at home this too.

Wait, let's go to Steve the Sega for the latest on Jason McIntyre's fantasy football team. Uh, do you got the latest, Steve? Why would I care about his when mine is in the final? Yeah? Did you take a picture of yours and screen grab it for everybody else? That's just slightly presumptuous. Oh, my goodness.

Well, that would mean Steve was also on Twitter for everybody.

To say that's true. That would also be presumptuous.

Running around the studio here, look at my team?

Is this the league that I'm in? Steve? That is correct? I did not make the playoffs of my interest? Wayne Wayne quickly, Oh wow, okay, so what do.

We need here? Since we're already down this rabbit hole?

I'm done. I had Jaden Daniels last night.

Oh so I am the lead.

So you are just basically cheering against Juwan Jennings. Everybody bits. What I need is a low scoring game.

So what you're really hoping was Jennings was going to get thrown out when he ran Arnold through the back and the ends up absolutely that it was going to be an automatic disqualification.

I heard personal foul. I didn't hear this counts toward disqualification. Gosh, He's going up against this team that was a juggernaut points wise, but they just had some nasty luck in who they played, but they made it in. So good for Steve.

Good on you as they say, succeed and proceed. We'll keep up with that as the night goes on. He's Dan Bayer, that's Steve Disager. I'm Mike Harmen. It's a Jason's Bit Show with Me Mike Harmon live from the tirec dot Com Fox Sports Radio Studios. Coming out next, We've got our buddy Jason locking forward to stop by talk about the playoff picture that we have for week eighteen and all the little nuggets about coaching, hirings, firings and guys that are going to interview. I know we don't want to do a lot of Jets talk, but damn it, we have to. We have no choice. That's deck right, Yeah, that's next on Fox. Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app. As they say, nothing is easy, Welcome in another hour Jason Smith Show with Me Mike Harmon, Dan Byron for Jason Smith tonight as we broadcast live from the tyrac dot Com Studios tirerac dot com. We'll help you get there an unmatched selection, fast free shipping, free road hazard protection and over ten thousand recommended installers. Tirerac dot com. The Way Tire buying should be we'll fix it in post. Seems to be the way of the officiating world than the National Football League. The Lions score on a thirty yard Jamiir Gibbs sprint to daylight missed the pat second one of the night, forty to twenty eight. Ensuing kickoff, there's a scrum, the ball scorts free, and a forty nine er player emerges from the pile to go and runs it all the way towards the end zone. And you had how many officials are there? Six seven seven seven total? Right son, seven people standing around shrugging, plus all the players except for the two that ran down for the forty nine ers, everybody wondering what the hell's going on? Instead Nope, down by contact and play resumes. But it went back to the you know you you astutely bring member Seahawks Bears just the other night. Yeah, it's a touchdown, okay unless it's not.

Yeah, And this clearly wasn't a touchdown, and it wasn't called a touchdown, but it took him five minutes to figure it out because no one is really paying attention to where the ball is. That's why this whole sky judge in conversation like that. I still can't get over the pass interference call six years ago in the NFC Championship game. How an official could miss that? Like, I don't know if we need more officials, We just need better officials. I'm not sure because maybe if you add another one out there, then they also don't see what's going on. But my goodness, there's just some stuff that you just nobody had the ball in the pile. There's no one and I understand that it's tough to see, but ended up forty nine ers recovered down by contact. They keep the ball where it was fumbled anyway.

But still, yeah, it looked like a Lions player had jumped on it, but it scorts through his arm and still is floating. You see a forty nine player dive back into said pile and he's clearly touched by multiple Lions while he's down, and oh, there you go. Eventually the ball does get free run, but it doesn't matter coming up on the two minute warning here forty to twenty eight the forty nine ers, after the brilliant start to the game, bogging down a couple of self inflicted wounds here with some bad tosses as brilliant as he was early rock Party pretty choppy.

Can I bring my take back and make it a hot take? Brock Party should not have played tonight and should not play next week.

Wen he's losing money, Damn Bayer, losing money with every throw.

He should freeze. That's what Brock Party should do. Just go.

Yeah, you got to stop the climber, you know, so he doesn't tip over the mountain. The yodling guy from the Price is right.

Easiest game to win on the prices right by the way. But yeah, I'm if I'm brock Purty, I freeze right now. If it's card Sharks.

The three six, no hemy noah HEMI we could use every game show that we've ever watched. Yeah, sixty seven, chase that card and two picks for Birdie in this one golf three three and three Gibbs with that thirty yard run goes over one hundred on the day, He's got one hundred and seventeen and a score. Williams Laporta and i'mon Rossy and Brown all found the end zone for the Lions, So all your fantasy stars accounted for on the Lion's side of things. For your san Francisco forty nine ers. Perhaps he had to get cute because he was starting. Guarendo thirty four yards on nine carries and Deebo Samuel three touches on the ground for sixteen yards. He has one catch for five yards. It was a touchdown, so you do get that saver, but clearly not the world win that you were hoping for. And Juwan Jennings five catches forty three yards.

And that's who Steve de Seger is rooting against as we speak. Got a bump from that. Jake Bates missed extra point, so Steve is just patiently waiting. It's essentially, if Juwan Jennings Zungzi doesn't catch a touchdown, he should be good for all intents and purposes. Steve just gave me that look.

He's gonna be, He's gonna come in, and look I'm getting out of the way. I'm closer to the door. I'm screwed if this goes south after what you just did, look what you made me do at Dan Byron Fox. If you want to continue with this at Swallendo, when you find me your heroes and zeros from week seventeen will get back into that in earnest Towards the end of the hour, we got Pete Futech coming up talking all things college football in a few But that's a I think where we started, right, I'm talking about brock Purty. Should he or shouldn't he have played? Should he or should not play? Week eighteen, we're gonna have that same conversation related to Saquon Barkley, although that's got records attached to it, so it's got a whole other level of way to it. Much like cam Ward and what he did for Miami and his three, you know, having his touchdown performance and they put up all these gaudy stats in the first half. I was okay with it. I saw the outrage and the anger that started to flow as he did. Operation shutdown because I don't think it happened in a vacuum, right. I think it was part of a plan. Right. It wasn't a Hey, I got my stats, shait, coach, I'm not finishing this. Get you got to remix this business with me. I'm walking to the bench.

I think it's the optics, and I will use the pop Tarts ball as the example here. It's like putting one pop tart in the toaster. It just looks weird, like you may not be hungry enough for two, you may only want one, but it just looks weird. And that's what I think it was with cam Ward. It just it ended up looking weird in a Bowl season to have a player come in and play one half and then not play the second half, especially when you would think that if it was for draft protection, you wouldn't play at all. Right, So it's if you're going to play the first, why play the second. To your point, Mike, I don't necessarily care. And it's not that I don't care about this story. I just that's fine because that's what bulls are right now. That's all these these games are figuring figure out what you want. We have had players with bigger names sit out previously. We've had players in bigger games. By the way, brock Purty just left after being sacked. So Josh Dobbs is now in the game for San Francisco. But to me, I just don't I don't understand the outrage for it, considering it's in it's their decision. He wanted what one last time with his team go around. That's fine. In fact, if I'm a Miami quarterback, and you had a quarterback on your roster that that will be your starter next year. I'd want to I'd want to see more of them, you know, I'd I've seen enough of cam Ward. Cam Ward got us thus far. Let's go to the next step. Let's see who's next. Let's see who's on our roster.

Yeah. I think some of it owes to the conversation we were having about party before. When you start getting into incentives, agreements, all of those things, not to mention that, Look, you're holding a record now, right You're It's a record that will probably get pasted in short order, but for now, you got the most passing touchdowns in college football. For whatever it's worth. Anytime you can add an extra inscription to the trading card show and to the record book as people go and sell you into the marketplace, it plays dan it's fair and the boosters and everybody that helped fund things for your nil collectives or whatever else, they want to return on that as much as they may want to see the next He's healthy and good is good to go. Like I had a different feeling when Preston Stone did that and would go into the game and now there's still quibbling over whether he was going to come in for SMU or not, and that it was all part of a plan and it was when it was too late, but he eventually transfers to Northwesterns Like, I don't know how I feel about that, sure, right, because the game was potentially still in the balance and then gone on sideways with your starter, so break glass in case of emergency, and then he didn't go in. Now, the tale they told afterwards after the media blow up was that no, no, no, we talked about it late, did he want another snap? Whatever? And again it goes back to the uniform last time, all of those different things. He's still going to be playing college football. Sure, so it's a bit of an apples to Orange. But for the purpose of this conversation of you know, opting out.

I've and I may be just the wrong guy to talk about this, Mike, because I am a big college football fan, but I don't care as much about the records. And the reason being is because if you're a fan of a school or a fan of a certain team, you'd be surprised at actually who leads what for the players that you remember and who you has done, you know whatever, you'd be surprised, Oh, that person's our leading receiver of all time, or that person's the like to know it off the top of your head is diehard will know it. But I think more people than not would be surprised at who leads what. So if it's a touchdown record here, if it's the rushing record that so many people now have, so many different levels, especially now with more games being played like it is pretty significant to have the full range of stats covered to remember who won what and who led what.

Well, now you also add the play extra playoff rounds? Are they counting depending on the conference, it's a whole mess. Yeah, right, So it's the era of change. One hundred and fifty eight passing touchdowns. So say who sticks around college football long enough to do it? And now you've got the financial inducements whereby if you don't have that first round grade, yeah, guess what I mean. We're talking some of these rumored seven million dollars nil deals on the table for yours or insert quarterback here to.

Transfer yours future. Who knows what it could be. Just to Mike I, Steve de Sager is up by six tenths of a point. Okay, this fantasy football game in his championship game right now. I'm sorry. I don't mean to be the guest to come in and but this is and it's basically Juwan Jennings, Like that's what it is. So I don't know if Steve's not even listening to us, but it's uh And I think Juwan Jennings is in the game.

First and goal, fifty four seconds remaining, Dobbs under center.

Oh, they went to him and it's incomplete.

He completed. It'll be second down.

So then Jake Bates extra point may have been the saving grace for one Steve de Sager.

We will know how this ends as we continue here live from tire rack dot Com studios. Hey, we've got an important guest coming up in fifty seconds. As we know in the National Football League can take an eternity.

In the books, it's a final as the Sam Francisco forty nine ers fall in defeat a thriller after racing out to an early lead. The offense sputters miss field goals, miss pats on both sides. Fantasy title for Steve de Seger actually decided on one of those, so that helped as Bates missed two on the night. But forty to thirty four is your final All your fantasy principles. They all play, they all got their numbers, and everybody walked away pretty happy, I think overall with their results. Even if you ended up with a ten or eleven point performance from a wide receiver, you'll take it as opposed to some of the duds that we saw lined up over the other How long the week was?

It?

Wednesday, Thursday, Tuesday. But yeah, five five day week of National Football League product that we just consumed.

It's like Starbucks if you got the Starbucks mobile card. It's if you visit five times during a certain thing, you get so many bonus points in Is that right? Yeah, seven times. It's not all the time, but.

If you get a streak going, there's yeah.

Absolutely, how about that? To do all five of these days is a lot, especially during the holidays. I mean, everybody's out of gas and trying to figure out a way to make it through. I think that some NFL games had to go by the wayside for some just to be able to make it through Week seventeen, Mike.

Now, to be fair, a good number of them were dogs, and even the ones on Christmas Day itself to a pretty bad football games. Great performances if you were on the right side of things and needed some fantasy love there. But and certainly everybody loved Beyonce's performance and everything that fell out of that. But I don't know. I always go back to we had all the hand ringing over streaming, and there's a promo playing from Jason and I. One of the last nights we were in together before a little vacation break for him and a few days off from me was you know how things are moving towards streaming, And to Jason's point, it was more a it's gonna be an all or nothing. You're gonna have to stream it on one of these certain I'm like, no, no, no, no no. It's like the Costco Chicken. As I explained, you go and find the podcast of it. It's like you got to have the thing to get you in the store, like the Staples, right, the food court, whatever else that that gets you to the to the door. And for the NFL, a lot of advertisers, you need a lot of places by which to sell advertising, a lot of product placement for movies, TV shows, all the gadget you have in your house, all the insurance companies, everything else. They need places to market their wares and free TV is not going to disappear altogether, all of these companies. That's going to be a base. But you know, I go back to the days, and now I admit that I'm old enough to remember where you had three games a week, right, you had two Sunday games, you had a Monday nighter and the Sunday game. For me in Chicago, I got the Cowboys or the forty nine Ers pretty much every week. Yes, mix in a Steelers game or a Raiders game now and again, and I got the Bears, and then we got Monday night football. So no matter what I think, you're always going to have those bases are going to be covered for you. That you're going to have that minimum minimal, and it may get reduced down to just a handful owing to this cycle of all right, you get Friday, you get a Thursday, you get you know whatever else. But spreading it out like this, I can understand where maybe you got fatigue cau especial if you're a college football fan. Adding the number of games you had there.

Too, Yeah, a lot of games. You know. To your point about the future of the NFL, where games are going just to say that I do think that the NFL has a responsibility to its fan base to allow the access on the on the big networks. It's not apples to apples when you talk about the emergence of cable TV to the emergence of streaming TV, because it's just like that, these streaming companies just have way much more money than any cable entity that we had thirty years ago trying to break into the game could even dream of having. So that makes it a different sort of deal. But I do feel that there's an obligation to provide as much as they can to the general public. And I think these nice little treats, these little bits of candy like all over these windows are fine. But I'll tell you it's this past weekend. It wasn't easy. The triple header on Saturday Mike was probably the toughest one because I think people are accustomed to, well, if I'm an NFL guy, my team's maybe not playing on Saturday. I never had to worry it. Maybe I'm not a huge college football fan or whatever the deal is. But when you add those games you had, how good the Broncos and Bengals were, and Chargers, Patriots wasn't much, and then you had the drama between the Cardinals and Rams, something that I was invested in as a Seahawks fan. Yeah, made for a long weekend no matter what window it was in.

Yeah, it wasn't a great game, but it was close late and defined by a big play at the end. Really for the TV crowd, I mean, you got a giant TV production behind all this. You couldn't milk that a little longer for the review sure, I mean we see reviews goroed fifteen minutes for so much else.

Especially for me who felt that it still wasn't a catcher an interception. It was too close, like it was too close for him from Witherspoon of grabbing possession to it hitting the ground. And I felt that I saw movement. I felt that there was movement, but they didn't see movement. They just moved on from it and left and said, all right, I n t Rams win. Everybody, Wait, is that Dan Bayer?

Is that Dan Buyer? Seahawks fan?

This is Dan Byer, fifty to fifty Dan Bayer?

There you go.

There, it is right down the middle. No bias here.

Because I'll be honest with you, I thought it was like, really, we're not reviewing that further, like just based on where his hands how close as you say, to the ground, It was yeah as he yeah, I just kencusing, all right, they win, We're on so you know we hate the card better story, move on. Well, of course it is in a million different way and millions of different ways, but you know, to punctuate at the point, it's yeah, you're always going to have the free option, uh, and then you'll buy into whatever really gets you, right, which whoever secures a larger package of games maybe, and especially if it's Netflix, which is I'm not going to say it's ubiquitous. It's in a lot of homes, sure, so, and if you're in the whole market, you're always going to get the game.

There's also there's also this and I think of someone of our generation, and if you're younger, it may not. This may not make any sense to you, but when we were younger, pay perview meant you had to have a satellite. This like if you had cable, you weren't getting any pay per view boxing things, you weren't getting any of that.

No, you needed a whole other box. Then someone bought off the back of a truck. Wait wait, but it was different.

It was so when you talked about pay per view, you had to go to someone's house that had the equipment where you could actually buy it at one point. Now it changed throughout the years and cable providers then got in on it. But there is this thought like when you say pay per view, like pay per view is streaming. I mean, realistically were paying to watch it, But there's a different feel when you say pay per view super Bowl. I think people of our generation are like, but it was it was.

A one off. Yeah, right, you were getting other things with it. Subscribe to Netflix, you're getting a lot of shows and movies maybe you don't want to watch. Yeah, a lot of documentaries that maybe you don't want to watch. That's you're progative. But it comes and goes fleeting and you can cancel at any time, and it's just.

The access of it. Like we well, well we will never be able to then watch if it's on pay per view, sure, because we just we can't go over to Aunt Betty's house all the time and w like we can't be doing well.

Think about what HBO was, you know, as kids are on TV and things of that nature. So yeah, certainly a different world. Another thing, I mean talking about the playoffs as we get rolling through stand Byron for Jason Smith, Mike Carman here from the Tirac dot Com studios, the NFL playoffs coming up, and we're getting one of those weird convergence of circumstances. And I was going to go back and do all the grid from two thousand and two when things changed to six teams and on, and I decided I didn't want to should hire a crack researcher around here. You know what we're talking about frequency and where we get the disparity of records. And it comes to a proposal that you put up on Sunday's show with Kerry Rhodes, and it's certainly valid in you know, to talk about here in the the NFC, as we may have the circumstance where the lesser team that gets into the playoffs ends up hosting a second round game, sure, right, or going on down the line by virtue of being a division winner, and it goes I think to where I and I saw it being tweeted around, right, So talking about receding is the basic point is right to seed or to reseed. Is the question at hand of whether well done by the way, well, yeah, whether you get that first home playoff If I'm encapsulating this right, you get your first home playoff game, but then if you advance, if you're the lower seed, you're on the road.

Yes, the argument from NFL owners because in this actually might get started with my team, the Seahawks winning the NFC West that year when they weren't even five hundred like that was that was the argument. Remember the seven and nine Yeah, yeah, and not only do they get into the playoffs, but they get a first round home game. And so this you know, goes back fifteen years now from when from that when that happened. But the discussions that were happening then were that NFL ownership felt that you should be rewarded for winning your division. And I feel as a football fan that the reward for winning your division should be you get into the playoffs. I don't think you deserve a home playoff game. I think that's going above and beyond. But I'll even concede that if the NFL owners would make the change that after that first round, then you can go by record, because I think this year, whether it be the Vikings or whether it be the Lions, there's going to be a fourteen to three team that is not going to be able to host a playoff game unless everything goes their way. And that would mean a six or seven seed also ends up running the table, winning their game and then winning another game against the top seed. And I just don't think that that's necessarily fair. And maybe you you know, Philadelphia being the two seed with they're going to be a you know, thirteen or fourteen win team, they had to face the Vikings a Lions in the second round, it's a little a little easier for me to handle. But to have like the Vikings and Lions be playing also in this divisional game, we haven't seen this before. And that's just my whole point is there's gonna be a team that's going to be on the outside looking in on Sunday night in that Lions Vikings game. One team's going to get the buy in home field. The other team is not only they don't get the bye, they have to go on the road and then they're luckily going to be on the road for the entire playoffs. That's quite a bit and I just don't think if you win fourteen games or fifteen games, like one of these teams is going to do that, the penalty should be that much if you want to. The Rams shouldn't have anything trumped over the Vikings just because the Rams won the NFC West, and the same thing with whoever wins the NFC South. Minnesota should be hosting them if they ever had to play any of those two games. But under the current system, that's not how it works.

Yeah. I go back to as long as we keep it with divisions right and that process, then yes you get into the playoffs, but schedules are not gonna be he made equal right. It goes back to the Kirk kurb Street crying and whining about winning and why why is winning still such a big deal? Like I taken both both. You play the schedule that's that rolls up this year, right, and in this case, you just happen to have an NFC North that ran rough shot over everybody. Yeah right, but those most years, right, most years, it's a ten or eleven win team that would be that last of the division winners, and then maybe a ten or eleven win team that matches them in the wild card. I did a couple of years just kind of looking at it, just to kind of go in and be like, all right, look, it's I certainly wouldn't fight against it. It's just if we're going to do divisions, you're always going to have inequities of schedules, right because even within the division, right, go back to all the Patriot arguments for years that people still cry about. Go back, I always want to bring in the Saints and the Colts. They get a free pass in those arguments for what their divisions were. I mean, so there's five and one or six and oh most of those years maybe a four and two mixed in there. You're off to a hell of a start just because your divisions.

Yeah, it's a fair point, and maybe it's magnified this year because of how good the NFC North is, because it isn't just the two teams, because you have an eleven win Green Bay team. You know that's in there, and honestly, if your Bears would have met the Commanders, who knows what that team would have ended.

I'm like, this division everything went to hell?

Yeah, yes, but it's it's just it doesn't seem fair to me to have that possible scenario, and it's more of sure, Minnesota or Detroit will be like, all right, we'll play who we play however it's set up to be. But it just to me, isn't fair that you could have a scenario where a Minnesota or Detroit team would have to go on the road when they had a record that was four or five or you know, six wins better than the team that they're traveling to. That to me wouldn't be fair. Now a lot of chaos would have to happen for that to happen. But you know, come on at NFL, make it you know, figure this out, make it right, that's all.

Yeah, I think it's they would say, well, you have this strange convergence this year, which is an outlier, happens however once in however many years.

Yeah, it's a possibility.

But the same thing, you know, on the other of, you know where all those upsets could happen, is going to be statistically negative.

Well yeah, I just think, like I think there's a difference, like to your point of if there's and a team that's eleven and six as opposed to ten and seven, maybe one team did play reasonably easier schedule, So they got to eleven wins. I just think in this scenario here, like what is the what is the reward? Like this is Minnesota and Detroit Just I mean, it's it's bad luck. I don't know how you want to what I'd love to know if there was a time where they actually benefited from it. Detroit probably not because there's been so few and far between instances where they've been good enough. But it's actually, uh yeah, but just to be able to again this just would be in a unique scenario. It's what I'm saying, it's the seed numbers that are the problem. Like if Minnesota ends up beating the winner of the NFC South or Detroit ends up beating the winner of the NFC South, there's a decent chance that you know, they're going to be playing the number one seed, which would be either Minnesota or Detroit. Now, if there was an upset, if Washington or Green Bay won those other games, which maybe they could, I don't have as much of a problem with them going to Philadelphia in playing that road game. But I just for some reason, it just stands out to be like like I don't know, like Eagles, you know you're gonna have to deal with this. It's not that they shouldn't have a home game over the Eagles. That's not what I'm saying at all. It's just I just to have Minnesota Detroit that have arguably the two best records in the NFL, and then after then I'll also then play in the divisional playoffs. You're kind of like, all right, but there's nothing you could really do about that.

But well, but trying to figure out where you salt away the inequities as you can, and certainly streamlining it like anything in the NFL, it becomes the where does it go in their list of priorities?

Yeah, and unfortunately it isn't one.

Well no, but look, I would I would say this for the Vikings and Lions. It's the first time they've ever I would say both teams have been loved or have been good enough to where at least for the Lions side, maybe they're starting to become the villain a little bit. So is that is that good for them?

Yeah? And if if you would have a scenario, Mike where the Vikings would end up having to play it like at Tampa for an NFC championship game or at the Rams, I think that's the only time that you would hear that conversation, or if Detroit had to if they lose to the Vikings on Sunday night. I think that's the only time you'll actually hear about like, oh hey, wait a.

Second, chaos potentials. You're getting ahead of the game. I'll expect a three hundred page report.

I just want to reward the loser of the Vikings Lions game because they deserve something.

They kicked ass all year. And then it goes, oh, sorry, yeah, absolutely, but guess what, this time it counts.

That's what I thought. Then that's it is.

It is going full on, full sell, full cell for that game. He's at dan Byer on Fox where you find Dan find me over at Swollen Dome.
