Greetings, Happy Tuesday, The Jason Smith Show with my bes friend Mike Harmon live from the Tirack dot Com Studios Direct dot Com. I hope you get there an unmatched selection, fast, free shipping, free road hazard protection, and over ten thousand recommended install hiss Tiraq dot Com is the way tire buying should be. But we always say you're ahead of the curve. We always see if he saw last night, two big show takes just get absolutely stolen from us the last couple of days. But now there is evidence that at least one big NFL team listens to the show.
Yeah, I might be classified as a bully based on this.
Uh, I don't think anybody would call you a bully. You're you're too nice. You're too nice, you know, and you're you gotta be like tall and imposing and you know what I mean. And I would say that you're nice, short squad, nice sorcer. Yeah, they would say, you know what you need to be a bullet? You would need to always have a really big sneer on your face and chewing a cigar that's really small, like it's all the way near the end, like it's not even lit. You're just chewing it.
Yeah, but don't you usually fear the one who's sitting over there just kind of grinning and keeping to himself.
I don't know.
I think you know, like Homer was looking outside the window the one time, watching that little guy, he's gonna do something.
You need more I missed it. You need more of the nineteen seventies construction foreman type appearance. I think, to be really muscle and bullying. I think that's what you do. You'd be pretty good at that. Work on that didn't I you can't take a break of meal here, get back to work right now. But the cigar would really up my insurance premium. Well, no, like I said, does have to be lit. It just has to be all the way near the bottom, okay, and then you had then it would be then it be okay. So I let somebody else smoke it down, just right right, smoke itself down. Here we go from there. Here, you smoke this all the way down. I've but to take it from me at the end and just use it. Okay, buts like cruelty as well. Listen, smoke up, Johnny. I know it's not healthy, so I want you to smoke this and then give it to me at the end. I get to look cool. Evidence that the Atlanta Falcons listen to the show. As soon as the Monday night game ended. Last night, the Falcons hang on to beat the Raiders. We get this news a little bit less than an hour ago. The Falcons have made a decision at quarterback and Kirk Cousins will not be the starter going forward. Michael Pennix, Junior is a new starting quarterback of the Falcons. The quote from head coach Raheem Morris. After review, upon further review, upon further review, we have a rehearsal. After review, we have made the decision. Michael Pennix will be the Atlanta Falcons starting quarterback moving forward. This was a football decision and we are fully focused on preparing the team for Sunday's game against the New York Giants. Now, I don't want to say I told you so, but what did we say draft night? Draft night when the Falcons drafted Michael Pennick Junior. He's going to play at some point this season and it's going to mean something. And all the pundits, all the experts who wanted to just say that's ridiculous. The job belongs to Kirk Cousins for the whole year. They'll reassess in the offseason. Yeah, when you draft a guy number eight overall, he's going to play at some point. I can find the tweets. I could go back on the record, and I do not. I'm a child. Right away, we knew and beginning of the season when he was playing badly, how far away from Michael Pennick Junior. But then Kirk Cousins started playing a little bit better. But now this run the last five to six weeks has been awful. They were lucky to escape that has quit. I mean, they're signs for Shador Sanders in the stands last night, and you had to withstand the last second, Hail Mary, What does that tell you? So we knew, no matter what, you are a bridge quarterback when they drafted guy in the first round. You're a bridge quarterback, doesn't you're a very highly paid bridge quarterback. Usually bridge quarbacks don't get paid this kind of money. And you want to go back and say, boy, did the Falcons really misalign themselves and screw things when they said, Okay, we'll give Kirk Cousins this money and we got Michael Penick Junior. But you knew he was a bridge quarterback. He had to play well all season to be able to keep this job. We knew at some point you'd go to Michael Pennix Junior because the desire to have and see a first round draft pick of quarterback is too great. This was the If you think you're ever gonna go a whole year and see a first round quarterback not play again, you're insane because this was the one time you wouldn't see it. Right, Oh, forty million dollars a year, four next four years, he might not play for two years. All that smoke people applied to try try to blow up here. You know what, the last few months. Oh Cousins is a guy. Go. You knew Michael PENISHU is gonna play. We I knew Michael Pennix Junior was going to play. You know why because I know reality. I know how NFL teams operate, and it's one thing to say things in April and then the footballs fly for real and suddenly everything changes. We knew this was going to happen. I honestly thought it was gonna happen a little bit earlier. But here it is with three weeks to go, and it is the right decision because the offense is terrible. There's no jump to it. They are lucky. They are existing every week, just getting by on offense, and they have two good players on offense to not be doing more right. B Jhon Robinson is a phenomenal running back. Drake Lennon's a top seven wide receiver in the NFL. You keep thinking, Okay, Kyle Pitts eventually is going to be the guy we thought he was. But they have too good a team to be meandering around offensively like this. They're too fast, they're too talented, and this is the time to do it. You have a really bad football team. Coming up this weekend that you're wondering, Okay, can they actually fly planes that say sell the team? Whatever? How how far out of town will they fly these plays? We'll have to see these planes leaving the team bust walking into the stadium this week, and how the Giants all the other flying planes over the stadium saying sell the team, fix this mess. The Giants have quit. This is the time to make that move because Penix is not gonna be any worse than Kirk Cousins. And maybe you get a jump and you're right there in the playoffs, you are, you are a game behind. You can win out. Your schedule is good enough to win out. The excitement to see him play, the talent level that he has, the cannon that he's got, I mean, this is it's ready, it is go. Time for him. We said it last night right after the game was over. It's time for Michael Pennix Junior. And here's Michael Penix juws.
Well.
The big question you had flowing out of the game last night, as we talked about, was if he's either A not healthy then tell us or B you're telling me he's not developed enough. Either way, it's not a good situation if you didn't make the move this week. Now, it's kind of interesting on the day that a former lefty for the Falcons gets named the head coach at Norfolks, it's a.
Big day graduation handed quarterback you played or play for the Atlanta Congratulations Michael Vick the left handed quarterbacks of Falcons. Han, I'm sure we could find a complete had a big day today too, Maybe yeah, won the lottery today. I barely played.
Hey, opportunity, you know you had a record day in terms of your commute to the office, whatever it may be. But for for Penix, I mean you look at the way you built it. You got Mooney was the other guy that you brought in, who's a burner. So to make full use of the cannon. Now we're looking at a point spread that is up to eight and a half when last we left it last night. It has moved a little bit down the middle bit a little bit of downward pressure. Wondering if the Giants defense shows some heart and gets after the rook a bit. But you can't ask for much more than this stretch to prove yourself and to become a hero. Right now, you're set up to become that guy. Not that you weren't going to be eventually because you were a first round pick. You're the chosen.
But Captain Kirk threw up over himself, all over himself repeatedly. I mean, last five games, one touchdown, nine picks. Yesterday was a train wreck, and he didn't even have to worry about Max Crosby getting after him. Right.
The mobility made up there and we may find out later on he's still got big time issues off the injury of last year. Inside the white lines. We don't care when you're one to one touchdown interception ratio and your team's sputtering when it was expected to walk away with this division, right, it was supposed to be Atlanta and Tampa in a two team race, and that's where we are only by virtue of the fact that Atlanta actually beat them twice, which is funny.
Right, understand it, because if you tie, you have you get that, which is why they're still in it with just a couple of weeks last So you got three games left on the schedule, two of which are very winnable, and then you got a battle against Washington, one of the other teams fighting for a wildcard spot.
So it makes for a thrilling end to it. And in Atlanta, I mean you got juice because they were starting to give up.
Yeah, I mean even with that win yesterday, I mean, come on, that was a They ran the ball forty times yesterday. It was like it wasteen seventy six. I was waiting for see William Andrews. Is he gonna roll? Okay, that's great, What a big day for William Andrews. It's gonna be William Anders and Gerald Riggs were running the ball and every other play, every other play. Well, but when they constructed the squad.
As much as we like the guys on the perimeter, I think the focus when you're talking about Bijon Robinson, especially after he was boxed by Arthur Smith a year ago, he had a somewhat stat line, but he would disappear like why does he have eight touches? He's kind of like you you get mad at Dan Campbell for a million things.
But yeah, late to the Gibbs Montgomery.
Sure, now that you felled Montgomery, you don't have to worry about that and.
Failed as an understanding, I did not he felled him. We interviewed, took him to Montgomery. It was a week ago. He had a whole big week to do. Whatever else he did was literally knuckles. He before you took him down. He's still Knuckles. He's just like Knuckles in the video game. You know, like you can't play Knuckles right now, you can only play some You should be Jim Carrey's carry. You know the way you treated him. Oh, hey, hey listen robot and hey listen, I need money. I'll do anything. I'm Jim Carrey. Hey, I'll do whatever movie you want me to do. I need money. Cat what grnch I need cat let's go. I'll do Elf two. And Phil Ferrell doesn't want to do it. You possibly ruined his career. I did not ruin his career. Not the Lions. No, no, no. He was a great second time in two years. It was now on the plus side, I got the Lions as far as I could last year. It's not my fault Dan Campbell deciding let's just go for it on. You're going to carry me the rest of the way. Your legs got my only get so far.
Man.
I'm like a starting pitcher that says, hey, eight innings, one hundred and fifty pitches, I need the close or anything I need to hear Narco. It needs something. It's twenty twenty four. You've got to get through five and a three. That's all we're asking of me. It's five and it's the playoffs. It's really four innings. But look, but you need a spark at this point because it's clear and Kirk Cousins has given so many chances to make it happen. You'll figure out everything else in the off season, right, because obviously you knew at this point as the season went on this was gonna be it for Cousins in Atlanta. You were going to find a way to move on from him.
Well, he was a wizard, right, and then Michael Pennix Junior becomes a well what do we got?
Yeah, but that didn't happen.
But he's a jag and now you move on.
The worst part got your dollar cost averaging.
So it worked out well because he was on that rookie deal versus Captain Kirk's bloated sound.
The worst part is that what the Falcons were hoping is all right, well, Kirk Cousins comes back. We know he's a really good quarterback. We planned on signing him and then when Pennix Junior was there, we took him and that changed everything. There was no big thought of saying, Okay, we're gonna go get this guy there. No Pennix Junior was there and they really liked him. They were surprised he was there, so they drafted him. And when it comes down to it, they were hoping that this season would go, Hey, Kirk is gonna play really well, and in perfect world he's great and he comes back and we have all kinds of great problems, but more than likely Kirk will play well enough. And now that we know, we have to change the focus of the team. Once you draft Michael Penick Junior and you see that he can be special, he impressed everybody during training camp. The players said wonderful things about him. Kirk Cousins never really warmed to the idea that he was playing with Michael Pennix Junior over his shoulder. You knew that this was going to change, and the most likely outcome was gonna be, Okay, we'll played well and we'll be able to spin him off in the offseason. He's got a contract. It's three years. Everybody knows what they're paying Cousins is still a good quarterback, and we'll be able to spin them off. It's not gonna be a big deal. Are we gonna get a lot for him? No, probably not, But we're gonna get somebody to take his contract because now we're on a rookie contract with a quarterback and we're feeling really good. But the thing is, and here's the big this is the big red light. Kirk Cousins looks washed, and maybe it may be part of it is it's gonna take him a while to come back from this injury that he had last year. Anytime you go through an older quarterback goes through an injury where it cost him a season, sometimes need a whole year to get back to where they are. Aaron Rodgers just right now is looking a little bit like he used to. I mean not quite, I mean not soon enough to say the Jets, but right now it's at least it's a question of, hey, do we bring Rogers back. He looked like the old guy led the Jets in rushing last week. He looked He's moving around a little.
Bit more.
Squad. He's not a skittish in the pocket. So if you're a team looking for kirk Cousins, he's gonna come really, really cheaply, even more cheaply than regularly, because okay, he's kind of a reclamation project and you're hoping that okay, one year past this bad injury, next year will be even better for him. But for the Falcons, it's like, okay, this is this is gonna be We're gonna be paying the piper on this because he's he's he looks like he's washed, and how are we gonna who's gonna really say? Oh, I am jumping to the front of the line for Kirk Cousins might have one of the teams left out of the draft. And let's face it, it's not a robust free agent class that decides all right, you take on a bunch of the money. So Arthur blank is gonna have to sell a lot more of those cheap ass hot dogs and stuff. Oh yeah, yeah, tons of hot dogs along the way. I will give the you know, the the small defense to what the Falcons at this point they actually had the only loss to a non playoff like team, you know, one that's still vying is the lost to New Orleans. Everybody else is still good.
Yeah, and so it's like you can maybe hang a little star on that, but overall a disappointing season.
So evidence that the Falcons listened to the show. We takes guys, right, It needed to be Michael Pennick Junior. It is Michael Pennix Junior. You're welcome.
Uh.
Look, we'll try to fix the Jets and the White Sox and the Chargers offense. We'll try to do all of that later on to feel baty. Let's go, sure, but coming up next, we got more from the NFL and a big deal going down in Major League Baseball. Keep it right here, Jason and Mike. You're listening to Fox.
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
You're all worthless and weak, It's true Fox Sports Radio, The Jason Smith Show with my best friend Mike Harmon. I just I just keep hearing we're not gonna take it.
I know.
We're not gonna take it.
And I was listening to a Bob Dylan Christmas on the way in and trying to decipher the words.
We're both in the same space. Was it was it Bob Dylan singing or Timothy Shalome is Bob Dylan? Because he wait to see is he gonna do his own singing in the movie? Does he does? Really? Wow? Okay?
And Dylan's already praised it, like on social media, like the real Bob Dylans, like he ever actually does his song.
He surprised me if he did it himself. No, I believe it, like he would just come and say, oh, I'm gonna check on the Twitter and just say, oh, look at that. That's great. Yes, I love Timothy.
I mean there's a lot of photos of him back in the day sitting in you know, bus stops and whatever.
That's when he was Bob Zimmerman, Robert Zimmerman.
Sure where he would get off the bus and he'd be reading like Baseball Weekly and stuff while he was waiting for his.
Just to check out if a musician gets off the bus. If you're if you're updating the Bob Dylan the album photos of him like in a in a cold trench coat, like I said, he would need to sell phone in his hand, like I'm walking across the street looking at my phone, checking my phone what's that Timothy, Timothy Timothy shalemine it Oh, I don't know who that is. Timothy. Oh nope, that's what that sounds like. Nope, not gonna say that. Nope. Oh shallow May. Oh, now I get it, Okay, Timothy shallow May. I didn't realize this is like my is like you're in my daughter's generations Tom Cruise like Timothy shallow May is like it like you get like you can't say any like because you and I growing up like Tom Cruise, Risky Business, then Top Gun and then every everything and then boom and he's the biggest movie star in the history of the world. But like our daughters and they're generating. It's like tim Timoy. No, Timothy Shallamy, you say one bad thing about Timothy shallow May like you No, no, no, no, no, that's blasphemy as take shots at everybody. Last listening to me for all these was hanging out with him this week.
I been telling you, man, well, it was also his college football knowledge when he was dropping picks.
Man. Yeah, I remember when he was.
Winning contests for Nicks tickets from what he was from like ten twelve years ago. I mean that started making the rounds as well. So you know it's a rich tapestry we weave. So I just showed you that Dylan photo and you don't believe it?
For you?
Yeah, no, no, no, no, come, I'm gets a Dylan photo up of him.
Look he's got a cowboy hat on who he's reading Baseball Weekly?
How great is that? Listen, it is e Cup championship. Now that it is. Dozens of fans excited about the outcome of this game between the Bucks and the Oklahoma City thunder. Look, the thunder of been have been really good lately. Look, we knew they were one of the top teams in the West. And I will say this as Milwaukee. Hey, like, Doc Rivers could be hoisting a trophy. He's pretty soon, how about that? Huh? Doc Rivers could be hoisting a trophy in about about forty five minutes or an hour. They lead Oklahoma City by nine seventy three sixty four late in the third quarter. And to be fair, right, to be fair, because I mean how much Doc Rivers is good? You know, Doc Rivers are gonna cry if they win this, right, Oh, I can't belieck it's another championship. Thinking work so hard. There was uh, just get the sand cut as the players.
Uh yeah, because that Darvin Han's a millionaire. Yeah yeah, I mean missed on that the empirates come unless he's got it.
In his in his in his contract, Like hey, and I'm doing this kind of bonus if we're undefeated again in the about that undefit, but Doc is gonna cry, is gonna cradle the trophy like it's the Larry O'Brien. Oh, it's best thing since two thousand and eight, since I would tell you that Celtics team is so good. You know, let's talk about them a little bit. But all the guys are so good. I really, I all believe now. And if anybody tries to dismiss it, they're gonna.
Go and they're gonna find all those giddy lebron photos of last year, the video of him popping champagne and act in the fool uh in the locker room, and before he was saying, Hey, this year's doesn't count.
It doesn't matter. We've already won a championship. The rest of the year doesn't matter. It doesn't matter if we fall back and lose and I get fired. We want a championship. We want already, it doesn't matter. Everything is fine since we declared him on firing watch, well that I do. I do want to give credit because like we're about positivity and when we say something, you know, look, we have a pretty good track record of predicting the future. I gotta say, but not terribly. We talked about you know, it was just three weeks ago Doc wherever is like, Doc is not gonna make it till Christmas, and the Bucks have to do something because it's just awful. But at the very last moment, they have righted their ship. They've really played well and now at fourteen and eleven, they're a little bit over a quarter away from winning the e Cup, which again what it means in the NBA pantheon, but what it means for the Bucks. Hey, this team is now together. We've weathered this early season storm where we didn't know what was gonna happen and Damian Lillard might not still be Damian Lillard. Are we still gonna be this this team that we thought we were. Are we gonna have to fire a head coach and get a new head coach and bring Butdenholzer back. But instead they have really righted their ship, and I got to give them a lot of credit, a positivity Tuesday for them because they have They have saved their season over the course of the last few weeks, not about the e Cups saving their season. Save that for some NBA scribe. He says, Hey, yeah, the NBA Cup saved the Bucks season. No how They've played the last three weeks understanding that it gets late early. That saved their season. That's saved Doc, who will now most likely finish out the season as coach. I mean again, you know, barring like a ten or twelve game losing streak and sometime in February.
Well, you know it would be even better is if they were playing a full Oklahoma City Thunder team.
Because it's not to say without Chet, but what do you always say? You can only play out there.
I'm just lamenting the fine in this this ultimate challenge in Las Vegas.
We don't have Chet. I started the frame.
But but for Doc Rivers and for the Bucks, look, all of a sudden, they're a five seat So maybe some of this is we were going to take a little sharper look at the Eastern Conference like we've done with the NFL.
That's another one folks are starting.
To come around to on a bad football, which I think we declared that at the end of September and it wasn't just a hey, it's only September. But for the NBA, one of the problems they're having is consistency of effort. The three pointers we've we've done it at nauseum. But take advantage of your opportunities, take advantage of your schedule and the fact that you do have two of the best players in the game to ride and their pride kicks in because Giannis has been pissed off for about six weeks, right, which which is what you need from him, right? Not complacent, happy, happy to be here. Johannest No pointed uh and terse at times in interviews until they started to write the ship. Then it's the holiday season and he's got you know, little one, so he's who.
And Hickory doc though, what's that? This is all Darvin Ham, It's really Darvin Darvin Ham may come out, he may wrench the trophy away and go this is lot.
Does does he get to have his name on it? Are their names on it? Like it's the Stanley Cup where he gets to have his name on it again.
They'll name it the d Trophyence Emirates, Emirates, Emirates, Emirates, no end Emirates right, the Emirates Darvnham Trophy. Okay, oh, I get it's got a picture of his head. He's gonna grab her hold of yours. It's shaped. It's shaped like a ham. Yeah, and he's gonna hold it like the Heisman with a one arm around the other hand with his hand out. No, you don't touch my trophy. And he only has a lot of game in this league. Wow.
Now that's the other thing is maybe they get a Ham sponsor Ahible Trophies.
We'll have more on this game coming up, Edible trophies coming up in a few minutes. Again, going to the fourth quarter, a thirteen point lead. Now for the Bucks, we'll get to that big trade in Major League Baseball coming up in ninety seconds. But first special delivery. Steve de Sager, who always has Ham at least once a week, how about that? Joins us? Now for what idea? Not just the holidays? No, it's not just a holiday meets. It's a fine meet and I recommend it Ham. It's not just for Christmas anymore. Yeah, it's New Year's leftovers during the games. Yeah. Oh sure, you just keep going on twelve months a year. Sure, why not.
Uh, we'll get to the NFL news in a moment. But yeah, this NBA Cup Final is headed to the fourth quarter in Las Vegas. The Thunder. This is a team that's twenty and five this season. They won five in a row. The Thunder from three point range in the first half were one for seventeen. Milwaukee is now leading going to the four seventy seven to sixty four, and the Thunder now three of twenty four from long distance. Giannis antenacunpo twenty six points, Damian Lillard with twenty. There will be no NBA games tomorrow. Among the men's college basketball games, in Charlotte, number seven, Florida beating North Carolina ninety to eighty four. Tar Heels record six and five. In Detroit, number twenty, Michigan State was only leading Oakland forty three forty with about twelve minutes left, Spartans pulled away seventy seven to fifty eight. At number twenty two Dayton, the Flyers won against UNLV sixty six sixty five on a late three point play and in overtime Number twenty five, Clemson was beaten at rival South Carolina ninety one to eighty eight. Among the ten NHL games, Pittsburgh came back for an overtime win against LA three to two. Carolina at home pitched a shutout for nothing against the Islanders. Devils lead with about five minutes left three to one at Saint Louis. The Yankees acquired outfielder Cody Bellinger and cash from the Cubs. Michael Vick is due to be the new head coach at Norfolk State, close to his hometown. There is a college football bowl game tonight, the Frisco Bowl in Texas. Late first half, number twenty five, Memphis leads West Virginia twenty to fourteen.
The AP college coach Richardriguez coaching this game or not yet?
Junk?
Yes, now, somebody else on the sideline. He's not calling the plays. Hey, this is rich I'm calling the plays now, just so you know. Yeah, and he'll take credit for this loss. I'm sure the ante college coach of the year is Indiana's Kurt Signetti.
And by the way, Indiana will be at Notre Dame in the cold this Friday night to open the college football playoffs first round. Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick come home so practice fully today despite the mild ankle Sprain and Casey plays this and then again on Christmas, and yes, Falcons say Kirk Cousins is no longer their starting quarterback. Atlanta goes with first round QB Michael Pennock's Cousins is just starting a four year contract.
Back to you, Thank you, Steve O. The Jason Smith Show with Mike Carmon Live from the tyrack dot Com Studios. And again, you know it's weird because now I'm giving credit. You know, when you criticize, if people do something well, you have to give them credit. It's only fair. Uh. The Yankees make a big move today. They make a trade with the Cubs, which we knew was coming. We knew the Cubs were gonna likely part ways with former MVP Cody Bellinger. The Yankees trade a player in cash to the Cubs in exchange for Bellinger. Now, right now, it looks like he's gonna play center field, but he could also play first base. He just started following the Yankees on Instagram the other day. The Yankees got him. Now, Anthony Santander supposedly is following the Yankees on Instagram. So if if that's a sign, then you know Bellinger can play center field, he could play first base, and Judge will stay in say field. Although I think the lesser error judges center field the better because you know Bellinger keeps his eye on the ball when he catches it. Forty six dollars. But I gotta give credit. But before you know, there's another shoot to drop on this. The Yankees have pivoted nicely after losing out on Jan Soto because they lose the money, and you talk, and it's it's easy to make the comparison of Okay, so here's seven hundred and sixty five million dollars they didn't spend. Here's half of that they're spending on a really really good starting pitcher, a really really good reliever. And now you get a former MVP and Cody Bellinger, who isn't great, but you think a lefty in that ballpark. Okay, they're still in the mix for other players, still in the mix for Alex Bregman. A lot of I think you're gonna see Bregman market really come to fruition. The next couple of days, the Mets are in the mix from a couple of the teams want Bregman. But I gotta give the Yankees credit because they have spent some time already spending less money getting you know, a pretty good outfield piece, a pretty good closing piece, and a pretty good starting pitcher. Now they spent a lot of money. There's risk with all of these. Freede is a thirty year old picture's got a lot of innings, And how none of these contracts always end well? Is Bellinger still the same player he was? Is he not? Devin Williams was injured last year? How is his home run from Alonso gonna affect him? But obviously Williams is probably the third of those of those of those concerns. So I give the Yankees a lot of credit. But but how much of this just it just smacks to me of, oh, I got to make sure that my ex broke up with me. But I'm moving on first, like the whole Mets Yankees thing for Juan Soto, and Juan Soto chooses the Mets and the Yankees were spurned and they're in shock, and the next day they signed Max Freed Like the Yankees are still in the motive. I want to be the one to come to happy hour on Friday, and I want to tell all my friends and yeah, I've moved on him. I'm starting I'm dating somebody else and he's just a jerk, or the other way around and she's just a jerk, and I've I'm moving on. I want to show you how quick I I'm moving on. I got all kinds of money we're gonna give out, all these trades we're gonna make to go bring these new guys. I want to show you that, oh it doesn't mean anything. I am moving on. I'm moving on from everything, and look how well I'm living my best life. Hey, you're kind of shaking. It's been four days and I know you've been out till like four in the morning. You drunk dial me like every single night. So I mean, I don't think you're as well as Oh, I'm fine right now. I am absolutely fun. This is the Yankees. They are the scorned ex who want to show Okay, you broke up with me. I'll move on first, and I'll show you that I live in my best life and I want to make sure it gets back to you and back to all of your friends that hey, look, that was the worst decision you made, was not choosing me. Okay, and the Yankees are trying to do it all at once. It's fantastic.
Well, desperation and all those fun things start to come into play. For sure, I would love to know in reality, not from what they're gonna tell me behind the dais when they announce everybody and have their murderers row right here, here's the Avengers assembled kind of press conference. But how deep in negotiations with Freed were they before before the SODO thing went down?
Or was that legitimately we'll get back to you in a sin it's said, wait, hang on, hang out, what's the matter. He's what he's going to the it's done? But what about our offer? They said we could no, okay, all right, hey hey listen, Max, what if we give you an extra hundred million dollars? Can we do this? Like now? All right? Great? Thanks? Hey we just got Max Freed.
I mean, now you have the picture of Cashman running around with his arms flailing link he's Kermit the Frog.
And all of that. So spend it all, you know, your opportunity cost of what it would have been to signed Sodo. You've gone and you you've put together a pretty good response. Now, the Devin Williams fun part of this was he thought he was coming to the Dodgers.
So that's a nice little wrinkled all of this. And Cashman, maybe maybe Cashman gave him a spot BONEU to say that, hey, hey, hey, I chose.
New York say it, say it. So we got that.
I want to go to the Cubs side of things. They print money, They've built their own fun little community there in Wrigleyville. The hominess, the hey, we're part of a neighborhood has been gutted. Now some of the restaurants and bars are still there, but the old seven eleven and Taco Belt they're gone. You've changed it up. It's now a little corporate area in the middle of this, and you're printing money. Yet you seem to be hell bent on getting rid of any guy with a contract of any substance the cot.
Did you know you bring in Potia, Who's who's a thirty year old journey even guy, I know the hell's he do? But look, and that's the thing about the risk is oh well. Cody Bellinger, Cody Bellinger. Yeah. You look at the back of his baseball card, you think, okay, Cody Bellinger's gay. Oh my goodness, we love Cody Bellinger. Okay, yeah, Cody Bellinger's ops last year was seven fifty. Not great. He's still a guy that can hit home runs. He's going to strike up man. I'll tell you the strikeouts at the Yankee Stadium this year between Bellinger and Judge and Stanton who it's gonna It's gonna be either like the old results of stratamatic, where it was a strikeout, a walk, or a home run, Like that's what it's going to be. Well, that's what run strike predicted the future, strike out, walk home run. And if they get Santander's say, strike out walk home run, that's all it's gonna be. We go one through nine with home run hitters. We're either gonna hit a home run or we're gonna strike out. Once in a while a walk, that's gonna be our out.
You played a lot of games with the seventy nine Tigers too, did you.
But look, you know Bellinger for for his career, has been a solid but not spectacular player. He had the one phenomenal year winning MVP with the Dodgers. But you know, look that's five years ago. You know, he's kind of settled into being a nice twenty five or between twenty and twenty five and between seventy and ninety RBI guy, Like that's what he is. So it's you know, to expect him to come in like the Yankees are hoping. Hey, not only is Bellinger gonna come in, he's gonna rediscover the power that he had when he was hitting forty home runs with the Dodgers, but Field is going to be great for him. And why not. You know, it's a risk they're taking, but for the Cubs giving him away, and they did, and they didn't get hardly anything back. Who knows him better than the Cubs just had him in there on the team for the last two years. And when you saw this trade go down, like, wow, that's all they had to give up for Cody Bellinger. Yeah, you know, there's mitigating circumstances, but the fact that the Cubs were saying, yeah, go ahead and we'll take a thirty year old reliever in cash, like that's like the Billy Bean moneyball deal. Hey you want Payna, I want a reliever in cash. Wait what yeah, oh and stock my soda machine for three years like this. If this isn't a warning sign as well about Bellinger that it's a risk, I don't know what else is, because the Cubs know him better than anybody because he was just there for two years and they're saying, yeah, we're okay with this season was twenty nineteen. Yeah, but you know, he had a nice bounce back in twenty twenty three. It was fun, but then he sort of terms yeah, but then then he took a step back last year.
But in terms of being a guy that you're you're quote unquote scared of right, missed a lot of time, you had the COVIDT shortened season and all of that. To say, hitting in the middle of that lineup versus what he's been with the Cubs, I think it's a decent bet for what they had to pay.
Exit out about a Fresca exit Swallen. Do on, there you go, Yankees, you go show everybody you're over the breakup. You go buy you go buy that great new pair of sneakers, and go buy that great dress. And but I go mad, I've made I've made that. So when he goes up and do you think Elijah? Can we put it like a Mets logo floating across his head? Forget about Sono, about Sona. I want the break up? Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah yeah. I don't like one blank that guy.
Look at me.
I'm I'm living my best life. Here, hold this sign the Yankees. I'm doing the Joker dance on the steps. I mean the first movie, not the awful second one. I'm doing that dance. You haven't even watch the second one? No? Why should I? You should?
No?
I shouldn't. It's all it's not gonna I'm gonna waste my time for the one of the worst movies in the history of cinema. Not doing it? Do it? You don't know it until you watch. Coming up next, the biggest controversy in college football is raging even more after what went on earlier today. That's next right here, Jason and Mike Fox Sports Radio. Wait, won the breakup? Oh, We're gonna win the breakup with mon Sono?
Oh?
What are you to break it?
Wait?
Do you they break it?

Fox Sports Radio The Jason Smith Show with my best friend Mike Harmon. Welcome back to Alex Teischer after your night off last night.
I there you go.
I mean, I mean, my friends know when you're working and when you're not because of the music of the show. And that's that's a pretty it's a pretty nice thing to be able to be know they know, Oh, Tycher's Tycher's not working tonight. It's just a derivation of Santa Santa Claus, the fact that I'm known for music, or the fact you have friends, Jason. I think it's the fact that you're actually in at work. Still work. Yeah, well, you work every year like lamar Odom. You work like every other day. I did meet lamar Odom. Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's it. You work. You you work a day, you're off, two days, you work two days, you're off a day. But we're at the Bunny Ranch. I really work, you know. Is that where you go when you're not I'm going to the Bunny Rams Okay, I didn't know. I don't know what you do on your spare time. That's true. You want to come next week for Christmas especial Christmas and the Bunny is HBO shooting at Christmas at the Bunny Ranch. Jo. Then you come back, Hey, look who's here? Jason Smith from Fox Sports Radio. How do you know it's in? That's not me? You know, I'm in my Mets hat and I got a Mets jersey and sweatshirt. That's not me, man, that's not me. Then somebody else pretending to be me. Not me, not me at all, Jason, you're ganger. Yeah. Look, the biggest controversy in college football the last few days has come up has been the negative connotation and how upset teams are about the transfer portal opening now before bowl games. Right, we saw, you know, Marshall had to cancel UH participation in a bowl game because they had a coaching change and too many players hit the portal in there too deep up depth chart, and you're starting to see teams get upset. Penn State is lucky that they're they were holding onto their backup quarterback as long as it can. But now he wants to transfer. And and and we heard some stuff from from from Penn State on this, but today RTT Lashley, the head coach of SMU, had the big statement on this, saying quote we have to end this terrible December portal window which is causing players to opt out transfer and teams are shorthanded for the ball. And whether it's a bowl game or the National Championship or the playoff, whatever it is, Let's stop this terrible and end this December portal window. And it's not quite grand standing, but I think it's a lot of coaches just not understanding the basics. Let's say you made the portal open in the beginning of January. Kids are still gonna opt out and not play. If they know they're leaving. They're not gonna stay and maybe get hurt or and go. They know they're leaving. So if they're gonna if people are sitting out balls because hey, I'm gonna go someplace else. I'm not happy with what's going on. I'm done. I'm moving on. No one's gonna stay now. I don't want to stay, and potentially if I play and I get hurt, and now I want a tramp. But now I'm starting behind the eight ball because I have an injury. If kids are gonna transfer, they're not gonna stay with the team. They're gonna say, okay, yeah, that's great. The portal windows opening in January. I'm leaving the team right now, at the end of the semester's over. I'm leaving the team that's gonna happen. This is like coaches that are just upset because some depth pieces are going somewhere else. I can't get worked up that a backup quarterback is gonna transfer, and college football head coaches treated like we can't even compete now, we should not even be in the playoff. How we're gonna do this? No, your best players aren't going anywhere. It's the players that aren't playing are transferring because they're not playing, and the ones that are going pro you're not playing in a bowl game that is important enough to have them stay. I don't know what coaches want. I get if this is just a hey, we're upset, and like James Franklin wants to talk about it, and they air out a grievance says, I understand, but this is just stupid because when the transfer portal opens, kids are gonna sit out anyway.
They're not gonna stay with a team through a bowl game. He's gonna complain about everything. Strike up the band next to him. Next time he goes to sit and talk again. Look, you still have the option even if you enter the transfer portal. There is the mechanism whereby you can stay with your team and play through. Now, why you would do that without some extra financial inducement, I don't know. But maybe it's all in negotiating and leverage play along those ways. But you saw it with Penn State, right, what happened after the transfer was announced. Hey, Drew Aller, I'm gonna stay another year. Right, that was pretty fast right afterwards, Like I'm making my announcement and my decision to go through. There is another transfer window that opens. It's understood. But to your point, we've seen it for years. We were in these chairs when everybody was crying about Christian McCaffrey. Oh, he's not gonna play in a ball? How dare he do?
Like business decisions, man Like, it's always been that, and then it now is exacerbated and you know, sometimes you have maybe a bit of unintended consequences. But we've seen guys have been opting out of bowls for years now, opting out of the playoffs. Maybe you look a little sideways at that, but again, right, but this is where it's a backup. It's a depth player. You have six quarterbacks on the rock, you can elevate consens. Okay, I'm sorry that he had.
You had a couple of packages for him offensively that are now rendered moot or really need to be revised. That's a you problem. Either that or make him happy enough that he's not going into the portal. It's it's I really, I can't work up a whole big thing over this. If it was a bigger deal.
Yeah, And like I said, if they're gonna leave, they're gonna leave. Coaches, you know, go go complain somewhere else. Coming up next, got a big story out of the NFL. This is.
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern seven pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
Here comes Metallica. It was not a saxophone, Jason, No, it was not. It was not a sat sounded like a saxophone, but then it was not. Well, the lyrics are even better. Just give it a second. Okay, So deep Fox Sports Radio, The Jason Smith Show with my best friend Mike Harmon, Live from the Tire Rack dot Com Studios and the NBA E Cup is in the books. Yeah, Milwaukee Bucks take home the second E Cup. Darvin Ham still says you cannot touch me during the E Cup. You cannot touch my record. I am undefeated, Doc Rivers so emotional? Okay, not really, but the Bucks win it ninety seven eighty one.
Boy?
Is there a way to juice u up a little bit? We got controversy with the NBA All Star Game format that was an hour. Nobody better to join us to break these down. Longtime NBA insider Mark Stein You can follow them on Twitter at the Steinline, that is, at the Steinline. Check them out on substack as well. Mark. What's happening man?
How are you guys? I'm good. You don't have cup fever? Uh? Well?
I had cup fever then the Nicks got knocked out, so you know that kind of affected me a little bit. I had cup fever at halftime when it was a one point game.
Doesn't hosting a national radio show force you to take your nick goggles off just for an hour or two? Everything? Does everything have to be viewed through a Knicks prism?
You asked me about the E Cup, and I told you you asked the question, I answered it. You'd think so, Mark, I would agree with you. However, uh so, look, the E Cup is tonight. You know, we see the final tonight in Vegas and the NBA has continue to try to make this a thing for the last couple of years. Where are you on on where the E Cup sits right now and it's present in the future.
Okay, I'm not in on the inside joke on why you call it that, So you're gonna have to explain.
Well, the Emirates Cup, we just call it like it's the nickname, like a cool thing, like it's the Eco like the Emirates cut.
But it's the ecout it's not cool, so you can scratch. So here's the here's the thing. I guess it's been so long since you guys have had me on. I guess I was on the suspended list of the dog out in the doghouse or something, so you guys haven't heard my rants. But look I am. I am actually a Cup snob because I've been going to Cup soccer games, mostly in England for three decades. So I really want this to be good. I want this to be great. I want people to get excited about it. But look, I think once we get to the knockout phase, it is pretty good. I mean, there are certainly issues even in Vegas. You know, the crowds in Vegas were not exactly excited by watching teams that you know, don't have Lakers on their jersey, so that that is that is a smaller issue. But honestly, just my I hate the group stage the way it is. I just it's the group stages are sixty regular season games, scores that count twice. It's not a tournament. That's why they have the different courts, and you know they're trying all these things to try to make it look different because it it doesn't become a tournament until we get to the quarters or even the Semis when the teams get to Vegas. So I'm really glad they're trying it. I want to love it, but there are a lot of issues with it to me, and I think even things that I haven't looked at as as an issue, which is, you know, playing the Semis and finals in Vegas. Adam Silver basically admitted tonight that they're not married to that, that they might change it and might even do the Semis in teams home buildings next season because they want better, they want more passionate fans watching it. You know, Vegas is known as a huge basketball town, but it just doesn't seem to be resonating with the locals this chance to watch NBA games. But you know, the credit the seats are filled, but it just isn't the wildest atmosphere that they were hoping for. So look, man, I want a tournament. I like, I really want knockout games. And the way I would do it if it was me, I think we should just go take the whole league to Vegas for like seven to ten days and literally play it out as a thirty two team knockout tournament. Give ye to the two teams that made the finals. The other twenty eight teams have to play in the first round. Let's put everybody's name in a hat and let's just play knockout games because that's different. It got to be different from the playoffs, and they're just to me, there just isn't any variety in it. It's the same thirty teams we watch all the time. There are no you know, what makes the romance in soccer cups our teams from lower divisions winning, you know, springing these upsets, beating powerhouses. That's what replicates the NCAA tournament romance of you know, a fifteen seed beating a two seed. We have the same thirty teams East and West are separated until the championship game, just like in the LAFF. There's just there's very little about this that is different. And I would just love to see more knockout play stuff that looks different than the playoffs that we already spend April, May and June watching. And so that's what I'd like to see. But you guys won't be surprised to know that they're not really calling me from my.
Input on this, Well they should. That's a great I'd love to see a knockout stage. You'll bring all the teams there and play and have like an nca term where you play one game and then you go home, win or go home or go home. That was fantastic, Like just.
And let's look in the dream scenario, and I think in the league's dream scenario was in the dream scenario we could at least let's bring two Euro League teams in to just make just to have something different. Let's bring real Madrid and Barcelona here and throw them into the draw and see how they do against an NBA team. But look, that's that's a lot harder logistically than I'm making it sound. So I just think, though, if it would be great to see thirty, you know, thirty NBA teams again, give two buys play out the rest of the first round, and let's just you gotta win, and you got to win to advance. Let's do it completely different, Let's mix up West and East. Let's do it totally different than we do in the NBA playoffs. And whereas the way we do it now it's you know, again, sixty group games in total that are just regular season games that count twice. That's not a tournament, like it's it's not a tournament. And that's really my issue with it, and I hope over time that is addressed. But look, you guys, see the other you know, you see what you know, over the last ten days, we've had so many days where there were two games or fewer, right, because just doing this causes so much havoc in the schedule. The twenty two teams that don't advance to the knockout rounds, like they're they're all of a sudden getting like almost an NFL by week kind of thing. It's just it does cause a lot of havoc to do this, and they're still learning and trying to figure it out. But you know, it's a long way from what a true Soccer Cup competition is, and that's what this is supposed to be modeled after.
He's Mark Stein with us here, Jason Smith Show with Me, Mike Harmon here live from the diirec dot com Studios, NBA correspondent. You follow him on Twitter at the Steinline. Read him Mark Stein dot substack dot com. See what everything he's got going on there. He's a Hall of Famer, long time insider. So let's go to another thing of change.
It'll be more than I guess the color of the court, and that's the NBA All Star Game now where we go to tournament's style there and the initial response from the players is, I think, like most of us, mark shrugging our shoulders, going why.
They're reaching their trying. They know the last couple All Star games have been unwatchable. But look, and I'm really trying not to go full grumpy old man, get off my lawn mode.
Tonight, I get you.
And struggling to do so. I mean, I just the All Star Game is unsavable at this point, and it's just the NFL and the NHL have already realized it. And look, it's just we're in a different time than when we were kids. When we were kids, you know, I'm a child of the seventies and the eighties. You know, the All Star Game was you know, you didn't get to watch, you didn't get the CdSe like Rolando Blackman, who I ended up getting to know really well in Dallas because that's where I've spent most of my career working. But like I'm sure you guys remember the famous NBA All Star Game moment when he thinks the freeze he has to make the free throws the force overtime, and he makes them, and you know he's screaming at the ball. Like I didn't get to see Rolando Blackman play that much. I'm living in southern California. He's playing for the Dallas Mavericks with a great player like that is not in my orbit in twenty twenty four. These guys are in our lives all the time. We you know, they're on social media they're exploits on the court. Every great highlight in the NBA, it zaps around the world in second, Like the All Star Game can't wow us anymore because these players we know, we see them all the time. Every great thing they do, we see it over and over and over again, and usually within seconds on our phone. And it's just the reality about the All Star Game is it's a convention for the NBA. It's not The game is just it's part of it because obviously you're going to play it. But people just want to make all the they want to be selected as an All Star, they want to be at All Star Weekend. But nobody's nobody's going to dial it up and play in this game. It's just not going to happen. And I don't know why we expect like All Star games have to be this super hyped competitive thing. You know, that's have they ever been. I mean it's there's very few all for moments that you can really rewind over time and and talk about. I mean, so it's I just think expectations for the All Star Game are unrealistic. When they happen. On Sunday night of NBA All Star Game, everybody goes ballistic about how bad it is and what a referendum on how disastrous that today's NBA is, and then by Tuesday everybody's forgotten it already. So I think my advice would just be, can we just not get so outraged about what the All Star Game looks like? I mean, Kevin Durant instead this, you know, this new thing, it's you know, he's in his words, it sounds terrible. I hate it. I'm with it, like, you know, I just you know, they're trying, they know that they know what they've been doing is not working. But again, it's just like, I just think we we expect way too much out of an All Star Game in twenty twenty four, and I don't. I really don't think it's fixable. I just don't.
He's on Twitter at the Steinline, That is at the steinline on substack as well, Mark Stein dot substack dot com. Mark great stuff man, No, grumpy old man, you had some great ideas. I hope Adam Silver calls you. I mean, that would work out great.
I don't know. I think I was pretty dowur pretty grumpy.
Noah, someone needs the hard truth sometimes, that's right, you know, not you know, true truth? Is it something that hey man, you need to hear whether you want to hear it or not. And something's that happened to it.
No more to catch up with you guys. Nonetheless, next time I will be stunnier, So.
You gotta man. Happy holidays. We'll talk to you soon, all right, Good Mark Stott. Look I get his point, becase he's a great point about the NBA All Star Game and really all all star games. The Major League Baseball All Star Game is the last of all the all Star games that people really care about, close to what they used to and even then, right, I mean close to what they used to. But for all the others, now it's really it's stunt casting. It's okay, Hey, we're in season eight of Friends. Let's give Rachel a baby. Let's have Phoebe date Paul Rudd. Sorry spoiler, Uh, we gotta do some kind of stunt casting because everybody's seeing these tricks. We need to keep people coming in, so we can't go If we go back to East versus West, people are gonna care about that. It's hey, if we give if we keep throwing new stuff out there, maybe one year we'll hit on something that everybody loves. So you're gonna continue to see this from the NBA, from the NFL. For everything else, We're gonna move into this because that's what all Star games are now. It is stunt casting, and that's the present, that's the immediate past, and that's the immediate future.
All my life's a flat circle here, uh. Taking Harry Chapin plus McConaughey, I'm mashed together.
There is the idea.
I get pirates Steve, and I got a treasure chest full of cash.
You're just mixing everything up right now.
I decided to jam them all together, and that's what we're doing.
I do all of that made sense in your head at the same time.
I got all of the marri right on board, except they don't know the Harry Chapin.
I got Harry Chapin, I got Mary Chapin Carpenter, I have pirate Steve.
Hey.
Yeah, sometimes you have a windshield. Sometimes you're the bug. That was a Nofler song, but but she made it even more popular.
