Dr Magdalena Simonis talked to Neos Kosmos for The Interview podcast. The GP has a significant career as a government health advisor. She is a Senior Honorary Research Fellow with Safer Families Centre of Research Excellence, at University of Melbourne and one of Australia’s leading women’s health experts.

Dr Simonis said that often poor communications by well-meaning bureaucrats had a negative effect on community communications.

“The CHO was dressed casually, talking to inner suburbs and forgot that for many older and multicultural communities, wearing a white coat shows seriousness and gravity.”

She also talked about conspiracy theories and how they undermined many in the Greek community during the height of the COVID pandemic.

She emphasised that COVID and the lockdowns, also generated heightened level of domestic violence, isolation, and confusion. Moreover, people neglected other underlying conditions such as diabetes.

 Dr Simonis said that long covid syndrome was more common in women but can impact on patients of all ages, with symptoms, that last for months.

The ancient Greeks called it kleos - noble acts to leave behind immortal fame - and, judging by the way he chooses to live, kleos is just as important to Paul Nicolaou, the new Executive Director of Business Sydney.

For a businessman, a lifestyle geared towards kleos is more about soul than bricks and mortar, and - for this reason - he is involved in a range of charitable activities and initiatives offered pro bono which seem to just pop up as ideas in his head the one minute, and come to fruition the next.

"I love helping many community organisations," Mr Nicolaou admitted.

"I've always been involved in unpaid charitable work in all my life. A lot of it stemmed from the work I used to do at school in a whole range of charitable causes when the school asked us to participate, and then, I went to university and got involved with the Hellenic society, I got involved with the university union, I got involved with the Greek community activities," and from there he rattles off a whole list of organisations he is actively involved in.

Paul Nicolaou is reactivating Sydney with a sense of kleos and clout

There's no denying that Alex Hawke, Minister for Immigration, Citizenship, Migrant Services and Multicultural Affairs, is a proud Australian but he is also another example of the Greek Australian success story.

Like many third and fourth generation Greek Australians, he neither speaks Greek (but for a few words), nor has he visited the country, but he does not deny that somewhere in his childhood, a drop of Greek spirit seeped into his soul.
