The Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association is on a mission to safeguard California taxpayers from the ever-growing burden of local taxes. In this episode, host Susan Shelley and Legislative Director Scott Kaufman delve into the complexities of Proposition 43, a crucial measure aimed at restoring the two-thirds vote requirement for special taxes. With the courts having eroded this fundamental right, Proposition 43 seeks to reinstate the Constitution's original intent and prevent special interests from exploiting loopholes to raise taxes without voter approval.

The conversation touches on the history of Proposition 13, which capped property tax rates at 1% and protected homeowners from skyrocketing bills. However, the courts have since created a loophole allowing special interests to bypass the two-thirds vote requirement, leading to a surge in tax increases. Proposition 43 aims to close this loophole and ensure that all special taxes require a two-thirds vote, regardless of how they're placed on the ballot.

The discussion also explores the impact of Proposition 40, a wealth tax that could lead to a $39 billion loss for the state, and the importance of voter ID, which is also on the ballot. The hosts highlight the need for transparency and accountability in government spending, emphasizing that taxpayers deserve to know how their money is being used.

If you're concerned about the future of California's tax landscape, tune in to this episode to learn more about Proposition 43 and the efforts of the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association to protect taxpayers' rights. Join the conversation and discover how you can make a difference in the fight against excessive taxation.
