Thanks for listening to The Herd podcast. Be sure to catch us live every weekday from twelve to three eastern, nine to noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and FS one. Find your local station for The Herd at Fox Sports Radio dot com, or stream us live every day on the iHeartRadio app by searching Herd. You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Oh it's good to have you. And tomorrow we'll be on a giant set, a lot of lights, construction, big beams. It'll be a super Bowl set like no other. Fox does it right? First time you've ever been on a remote set for a big, big show with you? Yes, But twenty sixteen Super Bowl in Houston when we were doing speak for yourself, Um, that was fun. I was a big deal. That set was flimsy. This set is in Miami, twenty twenty. I was a guest on The Herd. That was fun, right pre COVID remember that? Yeah? I remember? Yeah, Okay. His name is Kevin Clark. He works at the Ringer. He does the Slow newsday video cast. It's funny. I was watching yesterday as I was very much getting ready to watch Lebron and I was checking out all the Super Bowl stuff, and I thought I'd like to talk to somebody there because I'm there tomorrow. Do you feel the buzz? You know, because super bowls are different, some feel huge. How do you feel about this one a couple days out? How do you feel, keV? There is some buzz, you don't really see it until Thursday and Friday. That's when the fans start getting in. When it's Tuesday and Wednesday, it's really only the locals and the real sickos who want to be here the entire week in the media, and so it's hard to gauge. I would say the fact that both of these teams have been to a super Bowl in the last five years lessons the buzz. There will never be anything Colin like that Eagle super Bowl a few years ago with the Nick Foles one, because there was such a belief that built throughout the week. There was the underdog story, they shouldn't have been there. It was Philly trying to get its first super Bowl. Nothing will ever be like that. When I talked to Philly people this week, I'm starting to get the sense that Philly is starting to realize that nothing will ever be like it was five years ago. Yeah, I do think there's some sort of I do think you can sort of talk about the Eagles and caveat had the caveat that they just did beat Daniel Jones and a fifth string quarterback. I mean, I just talked to Deebo Samuel five minutes ago. I asked where he was on the quarterback depth chart. He didn't know. But that was the kind of NFC title game that they just came off of. And so I do think there's maybe a little bit of a lack of buzz, only because we've seen these teams before. I mean, Colin, you remember at the tail end of the Patriots dynasty when they would play in a Super Bowl, the get in price was normally pretty low unless there was an Eagles type team because Patriots fans were been there, done that. These are two teams that have been in the Super Bowl, and you can't have historic buzz when it's like that. Well, and that's what's interesting. I mean, we both kind of lived through the Patriot dynasty and it was very unique because NBA dynasty's last three to four years. This is a sport where they tackle each other, there's a hard cap, and it lasted twenty I do think Mahomes because of his really he's very much Tom and that he's send a message very early to everybody. I'm not going to take the most money, get me really good players, and I think smart guys do that. I think I think Patrick gets the big picture. What if he goes out though, and it's just ugly. They're starting rookies everywhere. This is stacked Philadelphia roster and they get rolled, they can't get the ball. Philadelphia leans on him on that old line. Does it affect the legacy? Do we get into a in a weird way hunt today? Is that you know MJ was way better in the big game. This has got a lebron field to it that we know he's talented. I mean, what if because I can't see Kansas City rolling Philadelphia, I could see I can see Philly going downhill. What happens if this goes ways for Mahomes? Do we view him differently? Well, it's a big question because part of this is that the Eagles have the third most sacks in history, right and we're not going to look at it if the front seven gets after Mahomes and I talked to two people in the last twenty four hours One of them was Trevor Lawrence saying, Hassan Reddick changes your entire calculus as a quarterback. He's so fast you don't even know what to do. You're not even processing it the right way. But we're not going to view it if the front seven gets after Mahomes almost I mean kind of the brother of the or the sibling of the of the Super Bowl a couple of years ago where Mahomes couldn't be upright because of the injuries definitive line. If there's another game like that, we're not going to view it as Mahomes doesn't have enough. We're going to view it as Jalen Hurts beat Patrick Mahomes. That's just how the media narrative has created. So I think there might be a media narrative that comes out of it and we start to ask questions. But it would be really hard for me to think about it because the Eagles have a better roster onety one through fifty three. Holly Roseman's done a really good job. I talked to to Brev Beach this a couple of years ago, and he kind of joked it he has the easiest and the hardest job in football. The easiest being he has Patrick Mahomes Andy Reid, but the hardest in the sense that that's not enough. He's got us surround Patrick Mahomes with talent. He does that every single year. We saw that the Tyreek Hill trade basically didn't matter to the offense. I think the conversation around Patrick Mahomes as his career progress is going to be really, really interesting. He took what amounts to a five hundred million dollar bargain for a contract, and it's really amazing. And the one thing I will say is that I don't think even though he's hobbled, even though the Chiefs have some injuries, even though, as you alluded to, they have young players, I don't think he has much of a built in excuse. When he lost that game against Tampa Bay. In Tampa Bay, each saw him in the elevator after the game and said, we're gonna fix this. We're gonna fix this, We're gonna rebuild the offensive line. He ended up doing that. What's the narrative if he loses on Sunday, Yeah, it will be rightly or wrongly. The Mahomes was not enough to erase the talent gap between the two rosters, and I believe he should be. Yeah, so I haven't asked you about this, haven't seen you in a while. The Sean Payton Russell Wilson fit is intriguing. We know he'll make them better. You know that. The Nahackett kind of falls into that group of Freddie Kitchens where he was just a bit overwhelmed by the job. Probably an OC or a position coach. Whatever it happens all the time. How do you think it plays? Because it's it sound. There's a lot of things I like. But now the GM doesn't have power. Sean reports to the owners the old line needs fixing. I mean he really Sean was very aggressive. What asked about Russell's quarterback coach? He's like, how do you think it looks to us? What's it gonna look like? It's gonna look? And I had a conversation about this with someone last night. Sean Payton is going to take the Bill Parcells, playbook, bill parcels every place he went after the Giants. He immediately had success, but he also established the tone very early. What I took from the Sean Payton private quarterback coach thing the other day is that Sean Payton is going to establish this is his program, his organization, and it's you know, I sometimes I here referred to at least with Parcels as a benevolent dictatorship right where it's like we're gonna let of other guys do their jobs, but we know who's in control here, right, And so I think with with with Sean Payton, he's going to establish that very early. I think that, you know, there's always the let rust cook narrative and all that stuff. And I'm a big Russell Wilson fan over the course of his career, but I think sometimes you need someone to kind of tell you what to do and to put you in position to win. Pete Carroll, for as as much of a player's coach as he was, he had a rigid system. He had a structure you needed that. You can't go full NBA and to have a players coach and just kind of kind of roll the ball out and do that kind of thing. And we heard last year there were the report, so Hackett is giving Russell Wilson a ton of input in the offense. They're building the offense around Russell Wilson. Well, sometimes players don't know best. Pete Carroll for I mean, and he talked about this during this season. Everybody said, oh, Pete Carroll didn't know modern football. Pete Carroll knew how to get the best out of Russell Wilson in most scenarios. I mean, even Russell Wilson has given Brian Schottenheimer, who gets killed on Twitter, a lot of credit for his development as a passer. And so the Seahawks did do right by Russ for many, many years. And what it sounds like is Sean Payton's going to re establish the system. I think this can work. I think everybody wrote off Russell Wilson way too quickly. It was a joke to see people say, oh, well, the dead money's only this, they should cut him. Who are you gonna get? Who are you gonna get that's better? And what's amazing to me is if the Broncos didn't have Russell Wilson and Russell Wilson became available, they'd still trade for him. You know, maybe the price would be different, but that's the kind of team they are. They want to take big swings. I think this is gonna work. I think Sean Payton knows how to coach. And I was surprised frankly at the amount of people who said that Sean Payton wasn't worth high draft picks. What are you going to do? Roll the dice from Mike Kafka, just pay the picks and get Sean Payton in because he knows how to build a system. So I tried to do shows without mentioning Aaron Rodgers. He makes it difficulty, very difficult. So I am a fan of meditation. I mean it's it's it's very rare when an NFL quarterback talks about a four day isolation trip. So I think it's it's more the person saying it. There's a lot of people that would say that, and I'd be like, oh, I totally get it. People in California go up to oh Hi retreats. I totally get it for creatives, right, And but it does leave Green Bay because his comment was I'm gonna go do this and it will get me closer to a decision. And I thought, you do four days of that, you gotta come out with a decision. What do you make of it, how it's viewed by the packers, the league, What do you make of Aaron and his retreat. I've spent four days at a time in darkness with lights out, you know, just giant drinking beer and playing video games. And I didn't come out with any clarity afterwards, I'll say that much, um, we can start there. I ask some questions abo bathroom musage during the four days eating. I have all sorts of follow up questions for Aaron if I do see him, But again, I probably won't because I'm not in Ohi and all those places. I'm just here, and I don't think there are any meditation retreats here in downtown Phoenix. What do I make about it? It's the biggest question I think in the NFL right now is how much do you give up for Aaron Rodgers? Because I kind of paneled a few people I ran into today. Some are saying they wouldn't give more than a first round pick. Some are saying two first round picks plus maybe even a mid round pick. I don't know, because I think you have to wonder how much is the broken thumb. How much of it is the fact that he's getting up there to the point that you end up with more injuries than you know. It's not just that he had a broken thumb. It will be one hundred percent fine, Like things take longer to heal, you just don't know. I think he was maybe the eleventh or twelfth best quarterback in the NFL last year. Is that enough to win the New York Jets Super Bowl? I don't think so, and I don't think the seat. I don't think Aaron Rodgers is a much better quarterback than Jimmy Garoppolo in a vacuum, but I don't think the difference for win with the Jets is all that much when you consider the difference between those two players. I also think that basically anybody except Zach Wilson would have made the playoffs with the Jets last year, and so there's some addition by subtraction to the point that I'm sorry, I'm sorry Jay Mack, but no, I really do think that they don't have to sell out to get a superstar quarterback. They just have to get a guy who's not Zach Wilson. I mean they can get really I know this sounds crazy, but they can kind of get a lot of guys who are going to be available, and they will have that ten eleven win ceilings to the point that you don't have to mortgage your future for Aaron Rodgers if he comes out of the four day Darkness or treat feeling like he wants to join Gang Green. Yeah. By the way, congratulations, your first child, Teddy Teddy, and Teddy by the way, is a Capricorn. So he's going to be driven and willful and sometimes stubborn. That's capricorns. So get used to it, Kevin, Just get prepared. He's gonna have strong opinions and he's gonna pick winners in sports, and he's not gonna listen to your opinion. That's what capricorns are like. I know, I worked with one Joy Taylor was j mac is Oh. So they work hard and he's very driven. But he's gonna tell you a thing or two about life and you're gonna have to listen to it. I love that, Thank you, Colin. What time is his radio roa availability? What time is Teddy coming on? Thank he's doing a deodorant sponsorship or something. It'll be the best time of your life. Couldn't be happier for you. I appreciate that, Colin, that it's very nice for you to say. All Right, Kevin Clark the Ringer Slow Newsday videocast just had a son, Teddy, born in January. So it is the strangest thing. You joy, my wife, your wife. Yeah, Ryan, are you a Capricorn? You know? I always knew, always a Pisces. I don't even know what that means. No, Geminis are two different people, Gemini, my mom's a Geminis, two different people. Back. She had a lot of thoughts on the haircut. Um a lot of emojis from Alex by the way, behind the scenes to Capricorn. No way, Alex again has strong opinions, not interested in my feedback. He's a big hockey fan. He's trying to grow more hockey NHL. And the Capricorns, by their nature are not only like ice with vodka. They're not big hockey people. Yeah. That's a Russian drink, isn't it. You never know how you if I could go, I'm very internationally. I heard you were a skinny, spicy, margharita kind of guy. Not not close now. You be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays in noon Easter nine a Empacific on Fox Sports Radio FS one and the iHeart Radio app. Jmack with the News, No No Turn on the News this is the herd line news. Okay, let's talk about the Super Bowl. It's happening, and I can feel it now. I can honestly now after talking to Kevin Clark, you know it's it's I went there. I've done the Lebron stuff. I can feel it that. I feel like I'm pivoting this moment to football from all the Lebron stuff. Yeah, unless kd or Anthony Davis Kinnock monkey wrench. Okay. So, regarding the Super Bowl defensive end, Carlos Dunlap of the Kansas City Chiefs as the lot of Patrick Mahomes this season, he believes Joe Burrow is the only other quarterback in the class of Mahomes. He says, next to Pat Mahomes, who else is there? The future is Joe Burrows. You're ready to put Burrow in Mahomes's class, No, but I think he's the only Why I said this, I watched Josh Allen this year and I came to the conclusion that Burrow is situationally better than Josh Allen. He's better on those third and fourth he is more accurate than Josh Allen, and I get fewer highs and lows I mean literally, Burrow had two bad halfs of football a week, one in the last week. So I believe a big part of being great is consistently great. In the NBA, Jordan Poole can have a thirty two point night and give you six the next night. That's the difference between staff, where you're getting twenty four minimum almost every night. And so I do believe Mahomes is number one. Burrow, who's not a flashy or athletic, gives you a consistency that is even often better than Mahomes. That puts him too. And then I think Josh Allen has a big bend cam quality where he is so uniquely gifted physically there's nothing else like him. He's he's the heavyweight champ, you know, without a jab, but he's got the best knockout punch. So I think Josh Allen's three. And then I think it's a bunch of guys we like a lot, but I want to see more doubles like Justin Herbert. Hot take Justin Herbert will pass Josh Allen by like November. You tell this, Kellen Moore upgrade is massive. It is it is. There are things you're good at predicting stuff. I'm okay at it. You are not the first person that has said the best move of the year is not Peyton to Denver, it's Kellen Moore to the Chargers. I had an NFL person I absolutely respect, say, watch the Chargers this year. They'll get rid of the inconstant Chargers were a good first half offense in an awful second half. He said he will even it all out. Watch but because they did like Staley as a defensive guy, but they don't want him in charge of offense. With much of a say so, I think you're onto something. I'm not selling my Josh Allen Stock, he's been a guest on the show, will go to another level exactly. Next up, speaking of quarterbacks, let's go to the other end of the spectrum, the New York Giants. They got a couple big decisions to make this offseason, Juan Barkley and their quarterback Daniel Jones. According to Giants Legend and Fox's very own Michael Strahan, New York needs to pay both of them, oh boy, and keep him in the fold. Here is Michael Strahan. You gotta keep sake one. You can see that Daniel Jones is better with him in there. The team is better with him in there. He's a leader in every single way. You have to pay Daniel Jones. That's just the way football works right now. Hardest position of Phil QB. So if you don't keep him, somebody else will get him, and then what's your next move. There's no guarantee anyone else is gonna be great. So I think Daniel did enough to earn himself a contract there. Okay, So ask yourself this, do the Giants need a bunch of players? Yes? If you're the Giants and you draft Bijean Robinson first round Texas running back, okay, and you could. You don't want to sign these running backs to a second contract. It never works out. Don't fall in love with yesterday the romance of it. Sa Quon Barkley has one more big injury, no value. You move sa Quon Barkley after the draft. If you can get Bijean Robinson, you get him. That frees up cap space because Daniel Jones needs help. He's not elevating. Daniel Jones needs due. So what do you Let's talk. Let's put some years on it. Two years for Daniel Jones, three franchise tag. I don't think he has a market. I think if I could get Brian Day ball with him, I'd take both. You probably have to pay him through years, a lot of money up front, so you can get out of it after two years. But again, people romantics like, nobody's making the super Bowl because of a running back, So don't pay ask Dallas. Don't pay running back. You gotta draft the running back every year. So you want to draft Vijon over, say, franchise tag sa que for one more year. I would get Daniel Jones. By the way, I have no receivers. We should add that, okay, so I can go buy one because I'm not paying a running back. I nothing against say Quan. Show me all the second contracts to running backs that work. People fall in love with players, fall in like with them. Go if you can get that running back, and then you move sa Quandy, somebody will take sea Quan for a second or third. That's more starters. The defense is fine, they need another corner because they let go at Bradberry, which who's a really good player. I'm very curious how the New York san base would react. You know what they do for eleven for ten years. This team stunk and they filled that stadium. What would they think if they won twelve games? They think this is awesome. I love you say, Kuan will cheer you when you come back as a member. That they're not twelve games. But that being said, if Dabo can fix Daniel Jones, can he do even more with a more talented, better quarterback. I think you gotta try to level the market. Brady's done, Aaron's not going there. Garoppolo can't stay healthy at thirty. I would do Derek Carr in a heartbeat, but I don't think they're going to. I think the Mara family wants Listen. Here's the thing. Daniel Jones made the playoffs and won a game. You're not gonna get the Marrows off him. And the argument is a line outside of left tackle was shaky and the receiving car was bad and they let up Evan Ingrams now in Jacksonville. So you say he won a playoff game in a good division, ain't got nothing to work with. You could easily if I own the Giants, talk myself into we're gonna we're gonna take this draft, get one corner, rest his offense spend some money on offense. I'm just jesting. You have to consider moving sae quon drafting or running back. You can't pay these guys three and four more, just not the way. Do you remember? I think it was Tyrod Taylor got to the playoffs. I think in my name, Buffalo, Buffalo, and everybody was like, hey, Tyrod Taylor got us to the playoffs, Like we can sign this guy to a few multi year deal, and it was like it was like, come on, name, Tyrod Taylor didn't get you to the playoffs. I'll wrap with this. Did Daniel Jones get the Giants to the playoffs? No? If you take out two games against the Vikings, the worst defense in the league, that fire their defensive coordinator. Look at his numbers. It's pretty bleak. He gives you about fourteen touchdown passes a year. Final story is back to the NBA because the drama never stops with Lebron's Lakers. Okay, so we talked earlier about the Anthony Davis sitting on the bench, the ornery if you will, postgame press conference. But now Adrian woods Darowski is reporting about forty minutes ago that Darvin Ham and Russell Westbrook had a blow up in the locker room at halftime. Apparently Russ was being subbed out and lingered on the floor too long. I don't know what that means. But they went to the locker room, got into it, and then they squashed it and went out in the second half. And Russ was atrocious. I don't want to hear. He had fourteen points in the fourth quarter and at one oh six all game, he threw an awful pass like that was stolen for a dunk. He was terrible down the stretch. I don't care about the points, but Colin, this is interesting. Lebron is celebrating a massive moment in NBA history, Anthony Davis is ticked off, and Russell Westbrook is getting in an argument with the coach. What is happening in Laker lane? I don't have an answer. It is something I've thought about, is it? Because I don't know. I mean, Russell can get rigid sometimes, so by the way, A reportedly Darvin Ham and Russell, you know, high fived or something at the end that. Yeah, of course, you know, put on a great face. You know it's in a in a game, guy, you know, get worked up and Russell's very intense. I get. I mean, I'll defend Russell on this. He's an intense guy. Well whatever, he but he's a very intense guy. But it is interesting why is Russell so agitated? And why is Anthony Davis last night literally last place on Earth he wanted to be was that game? It was weird. It's not even like I don't want to say it wasn't trying, but it didn't look like a max effort from a D. You wonder a lot of the Lebron's being celebrated this week as he should be. Yeah, all the talk is can we get Russ out of town? And Anthony Davis is always hurt and trade deadline. It's hard though, it's is it wearing on those two guys because you know what, nobody's blaming Lonnie Walker, nobody's blaming Austin Reeves. The blame goes on Westbrook and a D. Lebron's not getting blamed. Well, he doesn't get blamed. He should not get blamed. I know, sometimes we don't have an answer for something, but the video seems substantial. It does seem substantial to me. I noticed it last night and I'm like that is weird. He didn't even clap Listen. If I was Anthony Davis, I would know everybody in the arena has a camera on. I'd be aware of it, and i'd fake it. Literally, the only guy without a camera was Phil Knight of Nike. I'm sure you saw the picture, yea, every single person behind the baskets holding a phone except for Phil Knight, who's just just taking it all in And like, it wasn't that Anthony was even hiding his annoyance. It was disdaining exactly. He didn't even try to fake it. There's a quote somewhere out there, believe none of what you hear and half of what you see. That's good. That's very much what am I supposed to take. Like, I still don't get the Anthony Davis. All these Lakers jabronies are coming at me. He was upset that he was subbed out, no doubt, with the thirty seconds before the round. He was mad in the post game, yeah something, the entire game he did not play like, Anthony Davis, you gotta stay off that phone. You're getting All those guys are gonna drive you crazy. No, no, no, I read these guys and laugh at them. I'm getting good text messages from Arizona lining up some parties for you, and I know Bed Bang you're gonna have drinks ready for us tonight. I mean people are fired up to get you on the sauce. No, no, only sauce will be barbecue sauce. I did my chicken wings into it and go to bed J Mack with the news. Pretty amazing. All right, we'll have a limited version of the Magic eight Ball. I don't know always agree with the Magic eight ball, Jason, But super Bowl Magic eight Ball. You're ready to go? Sure some interesting questions? You want to throw them to me? Yeah? Yeah, yeah, let's start with the Magic eight Ball Super Bowl edition. The Chiefs will score more than twenty four points versus the Eagles. Defense says it is certain. I don't feel as strongly about it. They've scored twenty five points and nine of their thirteen playoff games with Mahomes, they are the number one scoring offense. It said, it is certain. Well, I bet the over, so I would agree. Patrick Mahomes will have more passing yards than Jalen Hurts has total yards. Signs point to yes, yes, because Hurts is only throwing for one hundred and ninety six yards per game since the shoulder injury. Did you know that? I didn't know that. Also, if you like Philly Kansas City Trails has to pass late. Mahomes has greater passing yards. What if the magic Gateball say about Aj Brown will lead all pass catchers in receiving yards. Yes, yeah, he's complained recently about not getting the ball. They'll probably try to engineer some offense for him. He was also the Eagles leading receiver. The Chiefs are also potentially down a corner that one point. By the way, I was gonna say, I bet Aj Brown to win MVV sneed the cornerback cleared concussion protocol. Expected to practice today. We'll see what happens. Next up, the Eagles will have more rushing touchdowns than passing touchdowns. Agate Ball says, yes, Jalen Hurts has not had a touchdown down pass in three of his last four starts. Kind of caught you off guard, didn't it. It's kind of interesting he hasn't been. Oh well, be that as it may, that says the guy who likes the Chiefs down. Okay, Next up, if the Eagles win, Jalen Hurts will win Super Bowl MVP. Well, most likely. The Eagles are sixteen and one with Hurts starting this year and oho and two without him, so when they have him upright, they win, and he'll touch the ball the most, probably have some rushing yards too. Magic a ball should have an easy one with this. If the Chiefs win, Patrick Mahomes will win Super Bowl MVP. Oh yeah, it is certain. That's not even close. First of all, he got the MVP at the Super Bowl against the Niners, and he had a passer rating of seventy six. So because he can be so spectacular, he didn't have to play great. If the Chiefs winn and he has a couple of big plays, you'll get Patrick the MVP. All right, what does it magic aateball say about this will be Andy Reid's last game as a head coach. There are there are rumors out there my sources. No, no, no, listen, they have the highest winning percentage by any quarterback coach duo in the Super Bowl era. So you're gonna let this thing play out. You're not gonna leave yet. Although I do think Andy does not coach in his seventies. I told you I had somebody that I trust tell me that they wouldn't be that. There was five percent chance that Andy Reid wins the Super Bowl five to ten percent chance, and says health. I'm exhausted, I'm mid sixties. I'm done, all right. Next up, Nick Siriani get to another Super Bowl after this year. Hasn't played in his first. But maybe the Magic eight Bowl knows signs point to yes. Listen, Jalen Hurts first or second best quarterback in the NFC. They return everybody because he's not paid big money yet. I think Dallas goes backwards. Daniel Jones a threat, Aaron Rodgers could leave. I know NFC's soft, but soft Eagles are getting old in the trenches, both sides of the line, getting a little up fair and they've been one of the healthiest teams in the league this year. That's paramount, all right. Next up, Jalen Hurts will finish his career with the Eagles. Sorry, oh, disturbing, don't count on it. I mean, what if he gets hurt again? There could be some there could be some concerns that he's not a long term fix. Possibly, And finally, Patrick Mahomes will finish his career with the Kansas City Chiefs. Does the Magic Gateball have anything on that? Oh, it is certain. Well, first of all, they're not overly reliant on his rushing ability, so he's mostly gonna stay healthy. Andy Reid's gonna make the ending. It's gotta Steph Curry feel to it. He'll know the time. He's not gonna do a Brady and played to forty five. He's gonna have a lot of awards. He's gonna have a big family, and he'll step out at the right time. Magic Gateball Super Bowl Edition, all right, we'll be a on our big early strong beams everywhere set tomorrow in Arizona. Be safe. We'll see you tomorrow live in LA. It's been the herd
