It's important for our smaller markets to do something more than qualified for the playoffs.
Right, there's a difference.
Between getting into to the first round and going deeper in the playoffs. There are five major North American sports Countain soccer. Four of them have a cap.
We don't.
We do hear a lot about it from fans, particularly in smaller markets, but the reality is we're, you know, two years away from the end of the basic agreement. We're just not in a position where we are talking about or have made decisions about what's ahead in the next round of arguining.
So, and let me push back on that. I don't think organizations have a right to a world series. If you make the playoffs in baseball because of the season's length, you've given a city an amazing six months. I mean it's you know, think about how great the Packers have been farv got one. Super Bowl, Aaron got one. I mean, Kansas City Royals got one. I mean that's the reality. So this idea that, well, okay, callin. You're right, a lot of teams with lower payrolls can make the playoffs. But that's enough. There's no guarantee. You think how good Mark Cubans Mavericks were one championship and they were underdogs in it. So the idea that, I mean when the last time the Jets were a Super Bowl contender. So the idea that that, well, if you got to do more than make the playoffs, no they don't. If Oklahoma City never wins. They got to a final with Kevin Durant, Westbrook Harden, but they never win a final with this group. But they get to several again, Jerry West lost eight times to the Celtics in the finals, seven or eight times. There is no right. If you're getting to the finals, you're getting into the playoffs. In baseball, that's better than half the sport that's a great I mean, I'm a Mariner fan growing up. Playoffs. Let me do a Jim Morrill playoffs playoffs. So this idea that, well, we don't. We never won a World Series. You know what, Royals you got one, Rangers, she got one. Nat she got one. You're probably not getting two. That's okay. There are even in college football, perdue, should we shut the program down? They're never gonna win a Natty. In college football, there are universities that just have to They have geographical and financial advantages. Ohio's got more good players, so does Florida, Texas in southern California and Miami they got more good players. That's why they went to Nashville. College sports is really inequitable. I mean, there's some of these cold weather northern How many good high school players does Wisconsin have? Just getting to a Rose Bowl that's all you're gonna get. You're not gonna win a Natty at Wisconsin and the and the truth is is the Tampa Bay Raids are probably not gonna win a World Series. But if you're getting to the playoffs, what's wrong with that? Like that? That to me, that's enough. If you were a viable playoff team on occasion sports fine. I think we forget how much better sports is today than years ago. I mean, go watch that HBO Max Bill Simmons series Celtic City. Just just the outrageous racism. And I mean the NBA was a tire fire in the seventies. They were they were putting the finals on tape delay. Our sports now are unbelievable, They're really I mean they're the college kids are getting paid. Women's basketball's on fire. I mean women are encouraged to be great in sports. Our sports world is it an amazing place.

Well, we haven't had Julian edelan on in a long time. He's got his own he's on the Fox NFL Kickoff. And we just got out of free agency. We're moving into the draft. I don't think it's a particularly strong draft. I do want to ask you about free agency. So there were some rumors recently about Aaron Rodgers in Minnesota, and I thought to myself, I would wait if I was Aaron for Minnesota. Great coach indoors know the division justin Jefferson and Minnesota. They brought in Darnold Daniel Jones, but they wouldn't bring in Aaron even for a year. Do you agree with that?
I do agree with that.
Can I hear Mike?
Go ahead? Are you there? Yeah? I do agree with that just for the simple situation. Look, let's let's let's rewind back when Aaron Rodgers was a young Spry quarterback. There was a quarterback in his room that was playing the antics that Aaron Rodgers is literally playing now. And Aaron picked up a lot of the habits of Brett farr. Let's not joke around about it. He's doing the same things that Brett Farv did at the end of his career. That doesn't happen by accident. So you have a young quarterback in JJ McCarthy with the Vikings, with a quarterback genius coach and Kevin O'Connell, and you just want to throw in Aaron Rodgers, who you know Week eight last year on was great because he started to get that chemistry that he doesn't get in the off season because he doesn't do the off season. But he started to get that. But you're also getting all the other noise that you're gonna have with Aaron Rodgers, which is a lot of distraction. And do you really want to go into this locker room Minnesota that went to the NFC Championship or went to the Divisional round last year and really put something in there that could mess with the function way of what that locker room is. They're clearly very confident in McCarthy. They let Sam Donald walk out the door. We were talking about him being the MVP until Week fourteen last year, which is crazy. So they have a confidence they know what they want. I liked that they didn't name him the starter because now he used to go on and earn it and you can't just you know, put in this whole process, this plan that you're preaching to the team, and the name a kid who's never even played it down in the National Football League the starting quarterback after some Donald leaves. So I do agree, I just went on twenty different tangents. I do agree that they didn't with them not bringing in Aaron Rodgers.
You know, people have said about Aaron like Pittsburgh fans are saying, well, he doesn't fit our culture, and my take is he's not really a football culture guy. Years ago, in twenty twenty, a story came out where Green Bay told Aaron don't be the problem. Since that article, this would be his third team in four or five years, and so I think Aaron has sent a very clear message. I am unapologetically independent. I am what I am. If you sign me, I'm gonna want a couple of buddies on the team. I'm okay with you as long as you don't fool me. Whatever you like, like Gronks, like I'll go to Tampa because I like the warm weather, and I'm I don't like the cold weather. So like he told everybody, cold weather teams not interested. So to me, you have to have a strong culture or Aaron can kind of hijacket like the Jets. Like I think he could go right now to a Detroit or to a San Francisco. But like, for instance, there were a couple of signings the Patriots made, Albert Hainsworth, Randy Maw. I don't think Aaron fits a lot of cultures.
I agree, but I do think he fits the Steelers culture because I believe in Mike Tomlin and the professional that he is as a head coach and how he communicates with players that he can make it work with Aaron Rodgers, Like we didn't hear anything about Antonio Brown until he left the Steelers. That is a magic power by Mike Tomlin who kept all that noise in the building. So if there's any place for Aaron Rodgers to probably be okay with how he handles football, I think Mike Tomlin would be a great guy for that.
So when you look at the free agency, I'll tell you a move I didn't love. I don't love Stefan Diggs to the Patriots for that number. Buffalo got better when he left. He was a three in Houston and they just paid him number one money. And my take is the culture isn't set yet, and he can be a little noisy. Like in Houston, which is a city that like accepts noise, he could be a bit noisy, and I don't love it. Again, Drake May is growing, he's not established. We surmised earlier today is they made that move because Cleveland's gonna take Shadure and then the Giants are gonna take Travis Hunter. And Mike knows I got fired when I lost aj Brown. We don't have any receivers that they're looking at the draft and thinking we're not gonna get Travis Hunter. Is it possible that's what they're.
Doing, and that could be possible, But you know they need to upgrade the receiver room. And what you do get with Stefan Diggs is you get a professional. You ask anyone around town, anyone around the league. The guy works hard, he knows how to run every route and he's a professional when he's in the building. Yes, there's antics, but number two, I like Mike Rabel dealing with those antiques because he dealt with AJ Brown. He knows how to deal with a big time receiver. We didn't hear anything out of AJ Brown. He's a very like alpha type of guy that's played in the league that can communicate with these guys. And then number three, he's pissed off at the Bills still like, why wouldn't you want a little fire in a room, the receiver room for the New England that hasn't performed in years. Why wouldn't you want a little fire in there. That's what steph Don Diggs is gonna bring. He's gonna bring some urgency, which that room needs. He's gonna bring some motivation. Yes, there's gonna be some other stuff, but I trust that Mike Grabel will take care of that. Yes, he's got a young quarterback in Drake May. But we saw last year how Stephan Diggs was with Stroud. He was a different guy than he was with Alan. He understood, he matured a little bit over the year. He evolved his game and his attitude, and I expect him to do the same thing. And here and if you look at the money, what's it a three year deal? Thirty six million guaranteed. That's a two year or thirty seven that's two year, fifteen million dollar deal. Guys are making forty milliion dollars now a year, so that's not a big deal. That's what where he's probably slated for the receiver he is in his career.
When you were with the Patriots, and the Patriots missed on a lot of receivers and so this after Chad Jackson, they sort of stopped until Nikkeil Harriet. They didn't draft a lot of first round guys. How long would it take you when you're with a good football team New England to realize, oh, that draft pick can play and that guy can't. Every team has busts. Every single team, the great gms have whifted Bill Polianwift. Were there times after the draft first camp you're like, we'll think that guy's gonna make it.
Yeah, plenty of times.
Wow.
You know, if you're a first round guy, you got to you got a superpower of some sort, right, right, So you want to see that superpower. And yes, you're in diapers with you know, shells and off off season workouts, but there's always something that you can see in an explosive movement a guy body up, a guy for the ball and Steve like he's a little kid, or or the speed of some guy. You see that first round talent, like where something is if he's going to be able to help right away.
Yeah. So I'm a fan of Shador Sanders, And one of the reasons I'm a fan is he had a terrible online in college. He trailed in all the games, he had no run game, and he completed seventy four percent of his throws. So you played with arguably the most accurate, consistently accurate quarterback, certainly the best bad weather thrower I've ever seen in Brady. And my thing is some guys are accurate and some guys aren't and like Cam was never going to complete sixty eight percent. Anthony Richardson's not that accurate. Like I watched the door and I'm like, bro is running for his life, trailing, so everybody knows he's throwing seventy four percent. Like I don't believe you can go from inaccurate to really accurate, and so now you can go from inaccurate to sixty one percent. But in all your years, of all the backups, wasn't Garoppolo accurate?
Early? Yeah? He was very accurate.
The thing was quarterbacked.
Yeah, I wasn't accurate as when I went to receiver with Shador. For me, it's not the accuracy. And you look at all the stats. He was sacked the most the last two years his career in college, he's been sacked the most. Set a few records on that, which you know a lot of times, yes, it's the offensive line's fault, but it's also you know it's it could be the quarterback's fault. So a lot some of those can be on him. My number one thing with Shadoor is can he break down the protections. He's not a mobile guy, he's a pocket passer. We all keep on saying he's a pocket passer. So for me, if I'm a general manager, if I'm a team, I want to see how good he is with his protections because there's going to be a day where your left tackle can't He's not going to be able to block the guy across from him, So you're gonna have to slide the protection. You're gonna have to get the ball out quicker. You're gonna have to adjust your game. So him being able to adjust his game over these last couple of years because of all the pressure, that could help him, but it also could hurt him because now he holds onto the ball too long. It's ultimately gonna come down to the offensive coordinator he gets paired up with and that relationship and how he handles protections.
Brock Purty is trying to get a massive deal, and the Niners have publicly stated, we're not handing out cash like we used to in your years in the NFL. If a guy signs a deal and doesn't get what he wants, is their resentment.
I may have resented Bill every day in contract I signed.
Really, I mean the.
Usually a deal usually they find a place where both ends are happy.
Generally, you found a place.
I found a place I understood I wasn't gonna you know, for me personally, I always took team friendly ish deals because I understood what I was a part of. I understood that I'd have my most success in New England because we were winning. I understood that, you know, if I go to another team and that coaching staff gets fired and you're in the middle of nowhere and you ain't making no money off the field, like I understood all that when I was signing with New England. I think that's a huge part of the evaluation process for the player and the situation. A lot of the times, guys, you know, want the biggest dollar, but you know, for instance, you look at like Darnold, he goes and he signs with Seattle. I wonder what was the number that Minnesota signed him for, because he's basically playing a one year deal with the team that he doesn't know and he's gonna try to hit free agency again.
And a defensive coach and a.
Defensive coach, I would have took probably six seven million dollars less to have my one year deal with Justin Jefferson and Addison and a coach that knows how to call plays for me if I'm going to try to hit it again, even if I wasn't going to be the guy this year. You know, that's kind of what you're evaluating as a player. It's not just the most money. If that's your goal, there's other ways to make the money. It's not always about doing on the field. So doing it through your winning, through the community of where you're at, and those are all part of that evaluation process for the players, so you know that that's the real thing. What was that number that Sam Donald or the Minnesota Vikings and Sam Donald didn't get.
I think most of the smart athletes get winning trump's everything because when your career ends, you'll get more deals and the deals now on social media alone without a seven figure deals without a doubt, casting deals without a doubt.
So I think players should really take a look at that when they're when they're looking at if they're number one goal is money, Okay, you got to look at everything because when you win and you're a champion, you make that money forever. You know, you may not make the money up front like you're making when you're you know, had a team that's four and thirteen, and you guys don't make the playoffs, but you're the highest paid guy in the league. You know, that's if that's your goal, that's your goal. But you could also make money the other way.
Finally, I thought it was interesting Tom Brady was quoted. Tom came out with it. This isn't speculation, he said. Eventually, you know, I took a piece of paper and a pen and I wrote down things that mattered to me between Tampa and New England, and he acknowledges they had really good receivers. That was really important. He's like, you know, also, the coach was offensive, the weather was better. I didn't want to play in cold weather, and he acknowledged. He goes, we reached a point where tension it was inevitable. How I had to leave and say this down. I'll ask this because it's out there. Tom's acknowledging the tension. Do you remember the first time, the first time I knew Tom was leaving is when he screamed at the wide receivers get open, and it was on television. I thought, Okay, I'm seeing publicly frustrated Tom with his personnel. That's why I wasn't shocked when he went to Tampa. And he also liked the Chargers that had Keenan Allen and Mike Williams. He wanted receivers. As you left, like it was like, okay, gronk aged. Do you remember the first time you thought Tom's cranky today or Bill treated him away and you just you didn't like.
It, you know, Bill. Bill was tough on everyone, And I don't know. If I had my blinders on and I thought everyone was on the same table, I may have. You know. So if he got into Tom, he got into Tom. If he got into Vince, he got into Vince. If he got into Ninkovic, he got into Ninkovic, he got into Slater, got into Slater. But when it was Tom, it was different. And the thing is, you Tom he had a really good poker face. Even when you could tell when he had his feelings hurt or he was maybe a little frustrated with certain things, he didn't let it affect him. And that's why he's an ultra leader, and that's why he's the greatest leader of all time, you know what I mean, Because we all kind of knew what was going on. He felt the tension, but he didn't see it from Tom. He didn't show nobody.
He didn't let it seep in.
He didn't let it seep in. He went to work. He was the same guy every day. He like yes, emotions in the game when he says, oh, get open, guys, that's gonna happen. That's it's an emotional game. You're in the heat of battle. But like, you didn't really see any kind of frustration from Tom. And that's because he always had a real I knew personally there were certain things, but you know, he never let everyone know. And that's that's what a good leader looks like.

There's an Aaron Rodgers up date coming in about four minutes. You're gonna love all right, let's get started with OKC, how about it? The Thunder became the first team to hit sixty wins this season.

The Kings last night Thunder of one fourteen and fifteen eleven straight on the road, and they have the single season highest point differential of all time. Colin the numbers are saying this thunder team, Yeah, he's going to the finals. You and I kind of sort of disagree. Are they not getting enough respect.
From the pundits?
They're getting plenty of it. They're Cleveland, They're Cleveland a year ago. They're a year away regular season team and they're gonna you just wait and see it. I will say this. I watched last night Chet Holmgren. I have hair envy. I guy's got good hair.
Okay.
I just think they're fine and you can see what's gonna now if they made the finals, would we be surprised? No.
So, I mean they're a really good team.
And they're in the regular season because they're so deep and their style, I mean, they play really good defense. They come at you with incredible intensity and that overwhelms a lot of older teams that have some load management dudes, like the Clippers or the Lakers. You can get into a situation where they they roll into I mean, it's SGA is playing every game. It's like the Celtics, Jason Tatum's playing every game. If you're not ready to go with their intensity, they're gonna walk over you. And you know, Denver the other nio Yo kitch is out and then Lebron is out some of these older teams Milwaukee now Dame's out. So if you if you're deep, talented, in play hard, you gonna win a lot of games in this league in the regular season.
I know, I joke about the Thunder all the time. I'll give him credit. They're really well built to handle anything. They got two bigs, Hart.
And Stein and Check.
So if they have to face Jokic, they got bodies. If they got to face the MAVs bigs, they got dudes. And then they face the Lakers. I don't know that Hartenstein plays.
That much against the Lakers.
They probably go small wing heavy to defend Lebron and Lucas. So I think the Thunder really well built. Give a shout out to Sam PRESTI I know he watches, so congrats. Sim Next story is how about this one? Lebron's bringing back his Mind the Game podcast, but he has a new co host, Colin Steve Nash.
How about that?
So Lebron's last co host.
Was a guy named JJ Reddick, who a few months later wound up as the Lakers coach. Now Steve Nash, who was jettison by the Nets after running into the KD Kyrie disaster.
That was impossible staff, I mean, that was an impossible lift for a coach, for a rookie coach, brutal.
So now Nash will be doing the Mind the Game podcast with Lebron, and I wonder if Nash will suddenly become a hot commodity as a potential head coach somewhere around the league. Should Tom Thibodeau get run off by the Knicks if they lose, I don't know.
I don't think Nash would work after his disaster in Brooklyn. I mean I was told by somebody that's close with Steve that by the end he wanted to be let go like it was I'll go back to Manhattan Beach and play tennis like I don't want any part of this. I think Nash can car. I think he like a Steve Kerr or a JJ Reddick, smart dude knows the game. But I mean sometimes it's just fit. Like never forget Steve Kerr turned down the next job. When Phil Jackson was there, He's like, no, this isn't the right job because Steve Kerr would have been fired. Yes, Like in the NBA, you're as good as your star is committed. Joe Mizzoula's first year, we were saying he's a little over his skis. By the second year, Like, Choe Mizzoula's good. Why because Jason Brown, Jason Tatum, and Jaylen Brown are totally committed and totally professional. So you know, and I'm not banging, but Harden and Kyrie was in this fields and Kevin was the easy guy to deal with. So in this league, you're as good as your best star. When you had John Stockton and Malone, Jerry Sloan new those guys are gonna play a lot of games, are gonna play hard, and they're gonna score twenty five points.
And listen, nash Is, I'll just say this, he is a very intelligent guy. Not only is it great tennis player, he's an amazing soccer player. He's just a great athlete and a really nice guy. I predict he's gonna be around. He's gonna be coaching again within the next rue.
For Jason Kidd's first NBA job wasn't great. He bounced back and now he's considered a very good coach. Yeah yeah, excellent.
All right, now, let's get to the Aaron Rodgers news that's just starting to break here. According to Vikings GM koisi Adolfo Mensa, he has confirmed that Kevin O'Connell spoke to Aaron Rodgers about the quarterback opening in Minnesota. Now I say opening because there's still some discussion about whether or not JJ McCarthy's the guy. They spoke the Vikings did to Aaron Rodgers. They decided to pass. They're happy with their quarterback room here. Albert Breer just posted this right now. We're happy with our quarterback room at every checkpoint, whether it was the draft process or practice until the injury the off season.
Now this is the Vikings GM.
JJ McCarthy has met the bar, so they like what they see from McCarthy.
They spoke to Rogers.
And decided to pass on the multiple time MVP who has won a Super Bowl Colin. This has to be a major ding to the ego of Aaron Rodgers.
That's why he's gone dark. He's not talking to anybody right now.
You guys picked JJ. He's never thrown an NFL pass coming up with an injury.
Two of them to him over me.
Yeah, and and the Vikings would have kept Darnold for the right number. So the Vikings are telling you we'll take Sam Arnold and JJ McCarthy both over Erin. So my guess is, if it's gonna come in the next few days, that would probably be Pittsburgh or retirement.
I think this to me, I would retire that the Vikings are revealing this that Hey, we spoke to Aaron. Now he's going dark. I wonder if he's just like, you know what, screwed, almost like Belichick, how no NFL teams wanted him. He went back to college. There's no other place for Rogers to go. Remember Belichick was.
Like, I'm gonna tell you right now, Pittsburgh's not gonna end well. Battle line, defensive culture and two receivers that are that bring maintenance and no nause Harris and Burrow and Lamar Jackson. I don't I mean, I if I was Aaron, I would call it a career.
And what does it say that the Giants were like, let's pass on them. And now the Vikings no thanks, Colin. This is this is we saw him maybe lay off, you know, as a little harsh.
I'm not no, I'm not being I'm saying I think his legacy is better serve retirement. I think he can go. Hey, my last ten games in New York, I played well, but I had a great career. I'm done. Does he Let me tell you this. I trust the Jets on line next year more than the Steelers. Oh that's a take, because the Jets at least have a left tackle out of Penn State. Yeah, and they have an interior alignment Elijah bah Tucker.
I like he's good.
Their center showed well, he showed well. I forget where he's from, but that's not sound bad take Jets offensive.
Jets line will be better at this next year than the Steelers missing their left tackle because it's not a great tackle draft.

I don't, And I'm just if this is the end he saw first ballot Hall of Fame, no doubt, certainly. Does he just fall off the map or is he's still like a talk Do we still talk about it?
Brady's been gone, we still talk about him.
The one thing like I could say nine nice things about Aaron Hall of Famer. Think he's bright, he's unapologetically independent. He tells you who he is if you can't deal with it. I don't have a problem with his podcast weekly. I do think you're better off finishing camp and not going to Egypt, but that's not a big deal. The vaccine stuff doesn't bother me in retrospect. I mean it. He probably should have been more open, but a lot of people fibbed. I don't care. I've watched his documentary. I read the book by Een O'Connor. I'm not anti Aaron. I don't think however, I think, and I know this from people that have played with him. He can be moody, he can be prickly. He can be passive aggressive. I don't love those as leadership traits. But I've said this before. A Rod was more talented than Jeter. Jeter was built to be a better leader because of his childhood and his upbringing. He was just a better leader Tom and the stability of his family was built to be a better leader than Aaron. Aaron had a ton of talent, So some of this says just how you're raised the family dynamic. Aaron's had some combativeness with the family. Tom's had none. So a lot of Aaron stuff. We saw the day he was drafted. He had a chip on his shoulder of the day he was drafted. So I'm not I got nothing against him if I saw him, Hey, how are you? But Aaron tends to be somebody that like he hears everything and he holds grudges.
