All right, here we go, we have breaking news. It is a Friday in Los Angeles. It's The Herd. Wherever you may be and however you may be listening. Jmack the Silver and Black Gun a little more silver. Pete Carroll is the new coach of the Seattle Seahawks. Ageism had a rough day today. And by the way, that division now is incredible. Harball, Peyton, Nanny Reid, and Pete Carroll.
Yeah, they're calling it the AARP division because every coach as old as hell I like it.
Get me srong. By the way, Liam Cohnan, Jacksonville, Pete Carroll, They're gonna gobble up assistance and coordinators. I'll get to the Cowboys in a second. Every day you wait to hire a coach, you're losing out on the best assistance. So just think about that there's a finite number of elite NFL assistants, make decisions, make them quickly. And the Raiders have chosen Pete Carroll. He's an adult in the organization needs one. I like the choice. I said this. I had no problem if he went to Chicago. I thought he was a good fit there. I think he would have been a good fit in Dallas. I think he's an excellent fit with the Raiders. They need stability, they need culture, and Pete provides that. And in a division where you have to face Andy Reid twice, Jim Harbaugh twice, Sean Payton twice, pretty good bet that a coordinator who's never been a head coach just won't do. EAT's history is he is good with young quarterbacks. He was good with young Russell Wilson. He was good with young ger Drew Bledsoe. He was tremendous with a young Mark Sanchez or a young Carson Palmer. So this is a coach. The Raiders are a total rebuild. They don't have a staff, they don't have a front office, they don't have a quarterback. They have Max Crosby in a couple of weapons. So this is lay in concrete forget about the master bathroom and a great kitchen. This is laying concrete. This is foundation up. I think Pete Carroll has proven. I've talked to players throughout the years and coaches that know Pete one of the most organized coaches in the league. When the Patriots face the Seahawks in that Super Bowl, it was a chess match, and Belichick later said that he likes facing older, experienced coaches. It was a chess match. Belichick won that chess match, but it went down to actually that interception the final couple plays, and I think Pete is is I mean, here's the thing with Pete. There are things like retaining kind of average coaches too long that I'd criticize him for, or maybe not in Seattle, sensing the urgenency at quarterback when you're in a division with McVeigh and Kyle Shanahan. And you know, we can nitpick all these coaches, but you know, is this somebody that took a Seattle franchise that was just swimming in mediocrity, took a usc program swimming in mediocrity, even a job that didn't work for him New England. It's not like they'd fell off a Cliff. I mean they replaced Bill Parcells. They got you know, one win lass one win last one win less. So I like Pete for the job. I don't think I don't think age is a factor with him. I think he's the best available coach on the market. This is an organization that needed a grown up, needs stability, and needs culture. And as we look for our TV audience, these jobs are getting Phil Bear's Ben Johnson. He's working on filling a staff. The Jaguars, Liam Cohen, the Jets, Aaron Glenn, Mike Rabel, p Carol. Only the Cowboys and the Saints don't have a coach. And that's why I want to segue to what's happening in Dallas. This is amazing. Apparently Jerry Jones the Brian Schottenheimer move, according to a report this morning. Yeah, that's a that wasn't Jerry's idea, that was floated by his sons. As sons really like the idea, and Jerry's not down with it. He's more down with Dion Sanders. That's probably not going to happen too. There are some things in your life you can take time with, like let's say, buying solar panels, for your house. You went thirty one years without it, you can put it off until next week, or maybe marriage. If you're a young lad, you're thirty one, thirty two. It's a big decision, a lot of fish in the sea. Take your time on that one. And then there are a couple of other things you have to act urgently, Like let's say you cut off your arm with a table saw. You might want to get to the er quickly, or hiring a head coach. Remember, in every industry in America, there is a finite number of elite, and it's I don't care if it's realtors, politicians, or football coaches. It is about ten percent. Right now, we got about six great coaches, and six great quarterbacks, and six great coordinators, and six great owners, even the billionaires, about five or six in the league that are really truly non meddling an elite. So here are the Cowboys, Pete Carroll working on a staff. Vrabels got his filled out, Aaron Glenn, Liam Cohen. These guys are filling out their staffs. So Dallas is now going to get the third and fourth choice on o line coaches. And there are not many on line coaches in the league that you even know the name to, because at one point Jimmy Johnson told me at any one time, the NFL's got four great offensive line coaches. And there's a reason you know the names are the best offensive line coaches in college because there's so few of them, and they're all getting they're either now all employed or gonna get employed by Aaron Glenn Pete Carroll, Liam Cohen in the next week. So this needs urgency. And the Cowboys have only interviewed three people in person. And remember Roberts Craft, owner of the Patriots, has six rings. Recently, how did they fire drawd Mayo? The season was over and before Mayo got to the locker room, man a press release. We're moving on. By the next day they contacted Mike Rabel. They put their name in the running for Mike Rabel. Think of the Cowboys. I looked this up this morning. So January fifth, the Cowboys played their last game on January fifth. The next day was my birthday, should be a national holiday. But January fifth they played their last game. It took them eight days to figure out McCarthy's not staying. It has been eleven days since then, and they're like, hey, what do you guys think of Pete Carroll? I just got hired in Las Vegas. All right, let's cross him off the list. Oh boy. In my entire life, every year there's seven or eight coaches that get fired, and there's always one great candidate. Last year it was Harbaugh, this year it was Rabel, and then there's always like two or three really good candidates, Pete Carroll, Ben Johnson and those guys like Ben Johnson. There's always one or two hot shot coordinators. One will flourish, one won't work. So one of the things about like Mike McCarthy and if I'm the Saints, now I go hire Mike McCarthy because you know he'll be somewhat successful and Mike Rabel may not win a trophy, but he'll be somewhat successful. And you know, Pete Carroll will be somewhat successful with the hot shot whiz kids the coordinators. And Ben Johnson's a very good coach. It's Chicago.
Would you be.
Shocked in five years we're moving on to another Johnson. I mean, that's just the way it works in Chicago. But Jerry Jones is gonna do what he did with Dak Prescott. He's gonna make you think he's playing poker. He's not showing his hand, and then you end up paying about forty percent more than you should. And I mean this morning. You know who should be excited this morning, Robert Sala. Robert Sala's just sitting back there. All the good candidates are getting hired. Robert Sala has unbelievable leverage this morning, unbelievable leverage. You gave dak unbelievable leverage. I mean, Sala's sitting there like now. Sla is the number one candidate with Mike McCarthy. So oh oh, just just an added note. The Eagles this weekend will play in their eighth conference championship in twenty five years. Cowboys have been a nun. By the way, this is Michael Irvin yesterday on Speak for your Elf reacting to Brian Schottenneimer potentially being the Cowboys coach.
Is he the right coach for the Cowboys?
No, no, not at all, honestly, honestly, right now, this is the Cowboys. You need the right coach on the football field to bring the best out of the team. But they do believe at the point in the juncture that the Cowboys are. Now you also need the right coach to raise the morale. I'm a you know, tried and true Cowboy fan.
MA morale is down.
I know their morale is down.
So you know, hopefully they're making the decisions understanding all sides of it. Yeah, we need the right coach. We need the right coach for everybody on the football field and off the football field.
Now just think about this. Let's say you give it to Brian Schottenheimer. That's a lower end coach who will now have a lower end staff because Pete Carroll is gonna gobble up a lot of the remaining solid coach. And if I was Pete Carroll this morning, I'm hiring Robert Sala in five minutes to run my defense. If the Niners don't hire him first, my first call, Pete Carroll. Get Robert Sala off the market, get him to Vegas. Now Sala may have options like the Cowboy job, but now the Cowboys are going to get a second tier head coach and a third tier staff. Brian Schottenneimer is considered a weak higher meaning if he would have been hired a month ago, you would have struggled to build a great staff coaches know who can coach like Pete Carroll should be able to build pretty good staff. Vega's easy place to get people. When you get Ben Johnson in Chicago is considered a hot coach. Caleb William they'll build a nice staff in Chicago. Mike Frable New England. Vrabel's good, he'll build a better than average staff. Gerrod Mayo did not build a great staff in New England because in the coaching community people were like, I don't know if it's going to work. Year later didn't. So now the Cowboys are going to have a second tier coach, maybe a third tier, and the staff could be a mess because Lean Comb, who got the Jags job again considered very young and very sharp. He's gonna my guess is he and Pete Cohen's gonna gobble up the best offensive staff over the next thirty six hours. And Aaron Glenn and Pete Carroll are gonna gobble up all the great defensive guys they know in the league. And what does that leave the Cowboys? That's crazy. What's going on in Dallas or what's not going on? January fifth season ended eight days later. McCarthy left eleven days since then, three live interviews, and the story was they they were interested in Pete, Well he just signed in Vegas. Wow, so j Mack blazing three. I got a couple of picks and and and over under bet in one hour from now. Jordan Schultz gonna be joining me in twenty five minutes on some of this coaching stuff is a lot, a lot of movement. I think Pete Carroll's a good spot.
Yeah, who's his quarterback?
Again?
They're gonna draft one, so good news is they have a top or are they picking six seven? Something like that?
They're gonna miss out on the two stars cam Ward and Shador.
Let me float this to you.
What if this is from a friend, I gotta give him credit. You know how Mayo was kind of a stop gap and then they got Rabel in New England. What if Schottenheimer's a stopgap for someone else in a year that they just can't get Now, Dion Belichick, do you think Schottenheimer would be hired as a stopgap?
Hate, Well, there's no question unless they get Sola, who I think is pretty good candidate. Let's say at Schottenheimer, that's a four or five win team, So you get a great draft pick in a strong quarterback lay.
You just kind of punked on the season. I know that no organization thinks like that, but hey, we just need to get.
A guy in the building, stabilize things.
We realize the market's gonna be better next year for a coach.
We bungled it this year. I'm sure Jerry would admit.
That, right. Yeah, Well, I think Dallas is a has been. They've been in quicksand for the last several years. So they're just slightly above average. So you get you know, you don't get a great draft pick, you don't get a terrible one, but you know you're kind of making the playoffs, so you're down around eighteen twenty, you know, and it's like it's hard, especially in a week draft. This year, Dallas, Dallas needs to make some moves. I'll say it again, I'd consider moving Micah Parsons getting the second number one, building that roster up because I don't think you're gonna get a great coach, I mean, overpaid quarterback even if your restructure's deal, and a subpar coach and a week staff in a division withoud now emerging superstar Jaden Daniels and the stacked Eagles.
And the Giants are not gonna stay down long. There's a potential for them to come out. I know you're not interested in the Giants, but they're not gonna stay down forever, right right, Cowboys might be last place in that division.
That's if I picked today, that's where I pick them. I'd pick them last.

Oh so this weekend you have Commanders and Eagles. Get to that in about fifteen minutes. Also, you have Bill's Chiefs and Jay Mack has been saying this, this is kind of a running theme on this show since week six, is that Kansas City's getting favorable calls from the officials, never using the word rig but tiptoeing around it. So I thought i'd add some context today. If you look at the Chiefs playoff penalties in twenty twenty one, yes, it is very very clear the Chiefs have had only three hundred and nineteen penalty yards opponents five hundred and forty one in playoff penalties in the last four years. That is something I wanted to throw this out. The second New England Patriots dynasty with another great coach. Interesting, the New England Patriots ranked third fewest penalties per game at third fewest penalty yards in that span, including the Plauffs. Like the Chiefs, It's all almost if the best coach team in the league had fewer penalties. I'd like to add this if I may, did you know the fewest penalties by any team this year? The best young coach Sean McVay and the Rams, so Andy Reid, Belichick and Sean McVay Looney coincidence, Arguably the three best coaches have the fewest penalties. Penalies are negative plays. Good coaches avoid them, just like good quarterbacks Holmes Josh Allen don't throw as many picks Justin Herbert had a bad playoff game, but threw almost none during the regular season. And great coaches also separate themselves in many forms, schemes, game plans, situational excellence, developing young players, avoiding penalties and mistakes. By the way, the most penalized team this year, the Jets. The least penalized team this year the Rams one had an interim coach, one had the best young coach. So in fact, since Sean McVeigh has joined the NFL as a head coach, the Rams are the least penalized team. That's because it's a big market. Okay, whatever, I give up, so I know you conspiracy theorists are tiptoeing around rig The Chiefs are really good and really well coached. And oh, by the way, there were two teams in the league this year that had just one delay of game penalty, Andy Reid's team and Sean mcvay's team. Both the Giants and the Jets had ten pluths. So again, Julian Edelman also brought up this point. It's Patrick Mahomes. He's the face of the league. They do want to protect faces of the league. Maybe it's subconscious. Here's Edelman this week.
I remember being on the other side seeing a late hit on Brady or a roughing the passer on Brady, where I'm like, eh, probably wasn't there, but it's Tom Brady. He was already had five Super Bowls. You guys got to understand the situation.
Years ago, when Michael Jordan was in his prime and dominating the league. Michael absolutely, and I can say this about Magic Johnson overwhelmingly got the favorable whistle. They were intimidating, they were assets. It didn't come from the league office. It was kind of like knowing the temperature of the room and when when it's a go either way play on Mahomes on a helmet hit and you don't get a review it or challenge it, and the league has told you on quarterback hits upstairs win in doubt, call it. That's not my opinion that as we showed you Monday, that's in the rule book. When in doubt quarterback hits ruffing the passer, call it tie. In baseball goes to the runner. In football goes to the penalty flagon, quarterback rubbing the passer. J Mack with the news.
No, no, this is the herd line news.
I gotta say, my friend, listen, this.
Is why this still works.
I put off a fiery hot take. People get worked up.
A couple of days later, you bring some some reason and some sense to the discussion. That was that was some of your best stuff this NFL postseason. I gotta be honest.
I don't know if it was one of the producers or you, but that was I was just writing notes down driving to work.
You're good. I don't have a counter to that. I was ill prepared. Uh so we'll go to Jaydon Daniels.
Let's start with the incredible rookie who has been just absolutely phenomenal, crazy shooting to become the first rookie to starting quarterback to make the Super Bowl. One of the most notable traits has been his late game for performance is leading dan Quinn to hand him this nickname.
He's got rare in the moment skills that have allowed us to be into this spot when it's you know, like mental chaos going down in two minutes, in these type moments where it could feel that tight, He's got the experience of somebody that's played a lot more football than a first year player on the sideline, Like, you know, he is the terminator, Like there's not a lot of stuff that's going to go on externally.
He can really stay in it.
Maybe the greatest nickname in the NFL, Jaden Daniels the Terminator. That's a great nickname, and that's what he is in crisis. Isn't it remarkable when you look at his passer rating the fourth quarter in overtime was better than Mahomes and Allen. Yeah, and those guys have better weapons, So you would think, like Josh Allen's got a couple backs, a couple tight ad. You would think an experienced quarterback with better weapons just default, you just get the ball off. You know, you've seen a zillion snaps. I mean, look at this fourth year.
That's pretty impressive for a rookie. And again, I was dubious on this team. You did show me the light in August.
I believe. Remember I was a guy saying a new owner, new OC, you didn't like, oh coach, new quarterback.
And Jayden Daniels has just been He's exceeded all expectations. I still in my head, I cannot picture him winning this game in Philly.
Can can you envision this?
No?
I think multiple road games, they're dinged up on the O line. I feel like it's just been a wonderful year. But it's now a better story than a team. I did think Detroit, off of by all the pressure in the world, was vulnerable. That's why I remember that was the one game I would not bet. I said, I'm not touching the Lions commanders. Philadelphia's not vulnerable. Philadelphia's healthy, loaded at home. Their strength running the ball. It's arguably Washington's weakness defending the run. If this one got ugly, wouldn't be shocked. I have a feeling this could get a little ugly.
Oh interesting, Okay. Now the next story is a little controversial. Colin.
Liam Cohen with the offensive cordator of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and in a stunning turn of events, he is now going to be the Jaguars head coach.
And I say stunning turn of events because he interviewed.
For the Jacks job.
They liked him, then he pulled his name out of consideration, allegedly because of Trent Bulky. The GM was still in Jacksonville, so they decide, oh, Bulky's the impediment.
Let's just get rid of Bulky.
And they went to come back to Cohen, but he had verbally agreed to a new deal with Tampa Colin making him the highest paid offensive coordinator in the league. But when Jacksonville came back. Can you fault Cohen for going back to Jacksonville?
I can't. It's just a better job. This guy's never done a head coach. You're going to in the seven million, eight million dollar you get to run your own show. I don't blame him. Yeah, oh, use an excuse. He said one of his kids was sick. Whatever.
It didn't love that part, but whatever, you know, you gotta do what you gotta do.
This guy's been working fifteen years in the.
Salt mines, grinding as a coach from college to NFL, and he gets an opportunity to coach Trevor Lawrence.
Are you kidding me?
And I know people are down on Lawrence, but coming out in the draft, Colin, you said.
Your first job as an NFL coach, you normally don't get somebody as talented as Trevor Lawrence as your quarterback.
You get like a raider situation. Yeah, you get the same job. You know, like we don't know what's going on. You can be fired in two years. Trevor Lawrence gives you a real good chance. And I know everybody's down on Lawrence, but.
Just comes down to injuries. He was Remember two years ago they were eight and three.
Yes, they were dominating, all.
Right, final story call it is The NBA Lakers pulled off an impressive blowout of the Celtics last night. Came with some controversy afterwards. Anthony Davis, Hey, you know what, I'm at my best when.
I'm a four, not a five.
Heard that we need a center, Colin what now? First of all, let's be fair. Now, the Celtics were playing their fifth game and seven nights, including a couple overtime games. They Jason Tatum looked gassed.
In the first time was back to back with the clips.
Yeah it was Boston looks spent. Boston's now gonna go home, get some rest. So this was the perfect Lakers were hitting threes. The Celtics, who usually do could not, so it was a classic example of a team without its legs. Lakers got a bunch of open looks. Didn't matter if it was Dalton, Connect Austin rivers. They hit their three Austin Reeves. Sorry they listen, that was just one of those. One team was spent and one team felt fresh. But I don't think Anthony Davis is wrong. I do think the Lakers could use another big.
How can you play two bigs in this era? I don't understand that what everybody's shooting threes, you have like two big.
Denver won a title, they were big. Boston won a title when they got bigger.
How many years ago was the Denver title?
Two?
Three, three? And by the way, Dallas at the trade deadline last year got.
Big did but they alternate bigs. It's Gafford or Lively, not both at the same time. They got a stretch four in PJ.
Washington. I don't know.
Again, Lakers fifth in the West. I hope Charles Barkley is okay with that. Again, Lakers are tracked.
They're not going anywhere. Fifth in the West. I don't know.
They're fine. They're an incomplete team.
They're fine, aren't we all incomplete?
Some more than others. After that contextualization of Kansas City, I feel pretty complete. Jmack with the news.
Well that's the news, and thanks for stopping by the herd Line News.
So I thought this was interesting. This headline is interesting to me. What's wrong with Jalen Hurts? And he's the quarterback who's banged up a little bit, He's always banged up. What's wrong with Jalen Hurts? There's nothing wrong. This is who he is. This year or his Super Bowl year, his two best teams. He's never thrown for more than twenty three touchdown passes. Daniel Jones through for twenty four as a rookie. He's now a backup leadership love Jalen, intangibles, love jail mobility, love Jalen push push amazing from the pocket. He is absolutely average. He is a player where his success is predicated on help from others, others being the offensive line or Saquon Barkley. They keep adding great weapons. His numbers don't really change. They don't really change, So the tush push is really more about the O line than it is Jalen hurts. Although I know he squat six hundred pounds. It helps, But Lamar Jackson runs two. But when they added Derrick Henry, it's still Lamar Jackson who's getting the MVP votes. When they added Saquon Barkley to this offense, it is now Saquon Barkley's offense. He has over his career in Philly had an offensive line ranked number one, number one, number one, and number four. Joe Burrow got to a Super Bowl with a bottom offensive line. That's the difference. So now people will say to them, so well, hold on, Colin, hold on, America's honesty broker. He has rushed for fifty five touchdowns since he's been in the league. Yes, and forty are three yards or less. That's an O line stat, not a quarterback stat. This isn't Lamar Jackson running from seventeen yards out or Josh Allen running from twenty four yards out. This is three yards out and the big uglies upfront push their way in. So there is nothing wrong with Jalen Hurts. He is a little small. He is not great from the pocket. Not a top twelve quarterback from the pocket, middle of the packer, lower from the pocket. Greg Cosel said this over and over. Excellent leader, not much of an ego, reserved, smart, resilient, chechcheck check check check, check check. But people are looking for something different, Well, well, what is wrong? There's nothing wrong. They keep adding great weapons and he still kind of gives you the same numbers, very solid numbers. I like him a lot, but this idea that he's hey, he's hitting about sixty eight percent of what he is now, this is what he is. We got multiple years. If the Eagles own line was as bad as Burrows, I'm not sure he's a starter in the league. I'm pretty sure he's not. Success is predicated on others. That's very much Dak Prescott, though I think he's more talented than Dak Prescott. Here's the Commander's defensive coordinator, Joe Witt on how they're going to defend Jalen Hurts.
The one thing is is if he's going to run the ball, and if the coordinator makes a decision for him to run the ball, we're gonna treat him like a running backer and we're going to hit him that way.
You know.
So that's that's their decision if they want to get him hit the way that that he gets hit. If they don't, they'll keep me in the pocket. So that's what we're going to do.
Teams that play Philadelphia would rather Jalen sit in the pocket. Nobody wants, you know, that's not really the way. The great ones are great from the pocket. The good ones can be good from the pocket, but need the elevation from others. Jordan Schultz coaching stuff. Pete Carroll New Raiders Boss. What's going on in Dallas Saints? Aaron glennon New York? What's the reaction? Jaylab has the best audio products in the game, wireless earbudgs to luxury active noise canceling headphones. I have two pairs of those and they're great. Go to JLab dot com. Jordan Schultz is joining us in studio. Let's start. You've got a lot of information on this stuff. What led to the Raiders? What a division of coaches?
Now?
What led to adding a little silver to the silver and black? Seventy three year old Pete Carroll?
To understand the peak care call higher, you have to understand the history of both Tom Brady and Rob Spy Tech and Tampa Bay. Remember when the Bucks won the Super Bowl? Who did they coax out a retirement a mid sixties Bruce Arians not dissimilar.
Necessarily to Pete Carroll.
High energy connects to players and they win the Super Bowl. And now you fast forward several years and yes, Pete Carroll is old, but Pete Carroll's superpower is connecting and relating to players. And when you think about that division, Andy Reid, Jim Harbaugh, Sean Payton, Tom Brady, Rob Spytech, they realized they needed an adult in the room.
Now.
Ben Johnson was the exception.
They looked at Ben Johnson like he's a superstar, He's a number one draft pick. But once that became really unrealistic. And I told you last week, I never really bought into Ben Johnson going to the Raiders. I always thought the Bears was the number one opportunity for him and that he wanted that job. When that became unrealistic, they moved to Pete Carroll and pursue him wholeheartedly. And I've talked to Michael Bennett, Marshawn Lynch, Richard Shermon, Bobby Wagner, and they all say that there is no coach quite like Pete Carroll in terms of the connectivity to players, establishing a culture. And I can't think of a franchise more in need of that than Silver and Black.
Yeah, I think we both admit they needed an adult, and Pete Carroll is an adult. Yes, he was willing to go back to college for an elite johnts.
He's a coach.
Coaches coach, That's what he wanted to do. And that's where we're at.
Okay, I want to talk about the Bears and Ben Johnson. My concern is he has no real relationship with Ryan Poles. I don't know if Ryan Poles is the guy. It's been a political organization just in this league. When the coach and the GM don't connect. Snyder and Pete Carroll Lait didn't really connect, the coach is usually in trouble. Ben has the power here in this dynamic. What do you make of that GM coach thing.
You mentioned Pete Carroll and Schneyder. Pete wanted to stay in Seattle, he was pushed out. It's really important to have alignment and the Bears. You mentioned Ryan Poles also, it was really Kevin Warren driving the bus, the president of the organization. But Ben Johnson is someone that can give you innovation. Ben Johnson is someone that's going to take his playbook and say no, no, no, Caleb. I will adapt to you. A lot of coaches, especially ones who've had the early success, like a Ben Johnson known as a Gurua wonder kid, they will go to a young quarterback and say, you listen to me, this is my playbook. You will learn everything I want you to learn. They'll have cohesion and it's been made very clear to me that Ben Johnson is going to have the opportunity very early on to establish the type of trust with Kayleb Williams, who, by the way, advocated publicly for Ben Johnson, and they will have the cohesiveness that he never had with a Shane Waldron, let alone a Matt Eberfluch. That was a big part of the hire. And I think Chicago also sold Ben Johnson on. Yes, this division is really tough, but nobody has ever been able to take the Bears to the Promised Land since Mike Dicka.
Imagine what you.
Can do for the city of Chicago in this region if you take the Bears to the Promised Land and they believe he will.
Dallas Cowboys, not only are they going to settle probably for a second a third tier coach, but everybody's gobbling up the best coordinators and assistance. Where are they at.
Colin If you're a really good, established coordinator, do you want to go work for Brian Schottenheimer in Dallas?
Why?
Why?
I mean this is not disrespectful Brian Schotteneier, It's the reality. He's fifty one years old. He's failed multiple places as an offensive coordinator, including Seattle, and now he appears to be in the lead in Dallas.
Now, I'm not willing to say quite yet that he has the job.
I know they really do like Kellen Moore and Kellen Moore obviously they wouldn't be able to hire until Philly's out.
But if Brian Schottenheimer is the guy, he is viewed around the Lee. I'll tell you this quite totally.
Honestly, he is viewed around the league as someone that will acquiesce to Jerry Jones. Now, Mike McCarthy, I believe Jerry really believed wanted to say and that he would be able to retain him. Jerry got very behind in the process. Did not proactively reach out to potential new coaches, Ben Johnson, Aaron Glenn reaching out to the Lions.
He did not do that. He became way behind and as a result, not only.
Does he not get a top tier head coach, but he has no plan of how to operate moving forward. The Cowboys have no plan, and this is what happens when you just wing it. And Jerry Jones, who's in his eighties, is operating right now as a lone wolf. A lot of times he's incorporated Steven. It's my understanding that Jerry Jones right now is driving this entire thing. So if it's Brian Schottenheimer, it'll be because Jerry wants Brian Schottenheimer, and that's not a very good thing.
Let me throw a name out to you. I think now Robert Salah is the best candidate on the market. I thought Vrabel was initially, then I thought it was McCarthy, Ben Pete. I think Solo now to me, has leveraged ye with the Saints and the Cowboys. You're getting a text right now? Is that anything we should know?
This is directly related to the Jets GM search, But I think we have a few minutes. We'll come back to that, all right.
Robert Sala, Yeah, Well, speaking of Jets, I believe wholeheartedly that Robert Sala would have been a guy in Jacksonville had the Liam cohenhil Mary networked.
I believe that.
And so now that they go with Liam Cohen, Robert Sala I think is most likely very likely going to go back to San Francisco become the defensive coordinator. But you know, we just talked about Dallas. This is why Dallas hasn't been relevant in three decades. If you're Dallas, why aren't you talking to Robert Sala right now? This is a guy who is very well respectful.
I mean a minute, he left New York. Yes, the franchise overboard.
They were two and three, on the verge of potentially first place, and they made him escapecoat and look what happened.
They fell apart the rest of the season.
Now, I'm not saying Robert Sala is a godsend of a head coach, but he is a culture defensive guy.
Niners want him back.
The Niners desperately want him back, and really a lot of teams really like Robert Sala It's why. And this surprised me. He was in the mix in three different organizations for a potential head coaching job, and a lot of people, including myself, did not believe he'd be in this cycle.
That says a lot about how he's viewed throughout the league. So if you're.
Dallas, I don't understand, quite frankly, why you're not pursuing a Robert Sala And it really goes to speak to the ineptitude of Jerry Jones in the organization. But I do believe again, he would have been in Jacksonville. If it wasn't for Liiam Cohen, and I now believe he will be back in San Francisco as the DC, which probably means in a year he'll be in the head coaching cycle again.
Liam Callin, he's been around for a long time, fifteen years, gets the Jaguars job. Has a lot of hurt feelings in Tampa, but it is coordinator to head coach. It's just gonna happen. That's the reality. They circled back Trevor Lawrence finally gets his guy. Yeah.
Yeah, So there's a lot of factors here.
I don't want to go too much into the weeds on this, but basically what happened was Liam cohen interview with the Jags went very well. The next day he alerts Jacksonville, you know what, I appreciate the opportunity, but I want to remain in Tampa Bay. The next couple of days, I love Baker Mayfield, love Todd Bowles. The Bucks make him one of the highest paid coordinators in the league, four four and a half million dollars.
Everybody's happy. It's copastic.
Then you fast forward twenty four hours the Jacks fired Trent Bulky, and now all of a sudden, they start bombarding Liam Cohen. Hey, would you be interested now that trend's out, what can we do to get you in the building?
Give us another chance.
As it was described to me, they were gonna make Liam Cohen say no, not once, but twice.
Okay, So they bring Liam Cohen secretly.
That happened in college a lot.
Absolutely, they bring Liam Cohen secretly into Jacksonville. Nobody knows what's going on, and they meet with them basically all day and Shad Cohn becomes very enambored, blown away. And as it was ascribed to me, and I reported this last night, they were not gonna let Liam Cohne lead the building. That's how well went. And you asked me, why not trimp Balkey? What's the big issue there? The big issue is TRENTP. Balkey is a survivor. He survived Jim Harbaugh, Jim tomp Sula, Doug Peterson, Urban Meyer. Now you start to think, if I'm Liam Cohen, why would I go to Jacksonville with Trent Balke talk about not having alignment with a GM. It doesn't make any sense. And the other part this is, and this is important to know Colin. It's ironic that it's from menoc from the Bucks to the Jags, because if you found if you were one the clock three years Byron Left, which was in a very similar position, the Jags wanted him. He ended up turning it down because he did not want to be in an organization that wasn't healthy. Right, It's not guaranteed if you're Liam Cohen, just like it wasn't with your Byron Left, which that you're going to have an opportunity year later.
Yeah, I think people get that. It's a head coaching job with Trevor Lawrence.
Absolutely, and if you're Byron Left, which you have not been in the league now for three years, you never got that shot.
It's only thirty plus jobs, thirty two jobs he's in the world.
And I know how frustrated Bucks fans are with Liam Cohen, but you have to understand this is an opportunity for him to be a head coach and now instead of making four to four and a half million, I've been told he's going to make Ben Johnson money, which is mid teens.
It's a multi year deals.
How many Buck fans would turn down three times the job offer? Get over it?
And the power and Trevor Lawrence who Colin. I know he hasn't been perfect, but this is a guy with im Men's talent. So there's a lot of unbelievable factors here with that job.
I worry about the Detroit Lions losing both coordinators, and I hear they'd like to fill those positions from within. Watch out the two.
Names that I would watch for, Scotty Montgomery as the OC potentially and Calvin Sheppard, linebacker coach, as the DC. But they're going to have a search. The difference here, go ahead, gonna.
Say that's upgrading within the staff. Worries me.
It does.
The difference here, and this is the difference between Dallas and Jerry Jones to Detroit with Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell.
They've been ping for this for a year.
They already have a lot of candidates obviously within but also outside to potentially bring in, so they're ahead of the game.
Now.
I'm not saying they're gonna be able to replace Ben Jonson or Aaron Glenn, because you can't. But I think Detroit with that roster is viewed at as a great opportunity to come in work for Dan be really good right away, and then you can jump start your career potentially as a head coach.
As we've seen with Aaron and Ben. I still think with that division, Detroit has to be the favorite next year.
Yeah, what do you think? I think I'll have to examine my data and analytics. So let's go back to the Cowboys.
Yeah.
I said this yesterday. We are seeing the fall of an American institution. If I if it is, if it is Brian Schottenheimer, Yeah, you can. I think it's interesting. Would Jerry give him a two year deal? You got to prove it two year deal, which, by the way, you'll build a horrible staff. Is there a chance Sol against Dallas?
No, I don't think that's all. I think Kellen Moore would be the other guy. I think Kelly, you'd have to wait. You have to wait, wait three weeks.
You'd have to wait.
Absolutely. And if you're if you're Kellen Moore, are you looking at Dallas. I know it's the head coaching job, but you have a great thing going on with Philly right now, and there's gonna be I would imagine. I know it's not a guarantee we just said, but there will be more opportunities for course. So to the reason Jerry would love a Brian Schottenheimer or a Kellen Moore for that matter, is you know they've Kellen Moore has been in the organization. Kellen Moore is a young guy. He hasn't been super established. Brian Schottenheimer will acquiesce to him. Jerry wants full control and that's why he's operating right now.
Is a lone wolf.
I keep using that term because it's very important to understand. This is not a collaborative approach. This is not a Detroit or a Jets even looking for a new system. This is Jerry Jones saying my way or the highway. And that's why it's probably gonna be Brian Schottenheimer.
If you loved you love that.
I think it is, and I think it is shows you how detas. Yes, the Cowboys have become the Lakers. If Lebron didn't come to La they would they would be this
