Colin reflects on Caleb Williams' performance last night between the Bears and Seahawks explaining he needs an offensive minded coach to help him raise to stardom. Mike McCarthy may have just saved his job in Dallas. Sirianni has shown he can't control his emotions on the sidelines. Plus, the NBA needs to change something fast to save their franchise. Colin also gives you his Friday edition of "Blazing 5" picks and Jason McIntyre's "Tomorrows Headlines Today!"

Here we go on a Friday. Things are percolating live ben Los Angeles. It's the Herd wherever you may be and however you may be listening. Thanks for making that's part of your day. Former Bears coach Dave Wanstat stops by head down. We'll lift his spearents blazing five in one hour. We got a college pick. Jmack. I'm glad we have football on Thursday nights. It gives me something to do. But I'm not sure the Wham documentary on a Netflix wouldn't have been more interesting than tuning into the Bear Seahawks. But I did think there was a winner last night beyond the Seahawks.
A winner last night beyond the Seahawks.
Who would it be? I want you to think about that, not the fans, that's for sure. You know it wasn't the fans, It wasn't the Bears, the winners beyond the Seahawks Detroit offensive coordinator Ben Johnson. According to Adam Schefter, he is now in play and wants the job. I mean, here's what it's been reduced to. I felt bad for Kayleb Williams. I felt sorry for him. So job number one in Chicago is make Kayleb Williams work. And you see the talent. I'm not sure if you knew this. He has four three hundred yard passing games. That's more than Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes. But he's been sacked sixty seven times this year, seven times last night. To give you some perspective, Bo Nicks has been sacked only twenty two times. Rookie Drake May twenty nine. He's overdouble that, and he's got a game left, by the way. The last time a quarterback got sacked this much, it was two thousand and five David Carr, Derek's older brother. Many people have speculated that it ruined his career. He was never the same quarterback. I hope it's not too late for this kid. PFF has the Bears offensive line ranked twenty ninth and oh, by the way, it is the second least paid offensive line for a perpetually cheap franchise. It's a battle line. I mean, we say that. Jim Harbaugh goes to the Chargers. First thing he says is, we don't need receivers. Get me the best tackle in the draft to protect Justin Herbert. I'm telling you they had a great touchdown pass last night. He really did. He had a great touchdown pass, but a backup offensive lineman got called for holding and that negated the touchdown. Maybe a clever young offensive coordinator is the answer, but you gotta save this kid. There's almost no motion in the offense at all. They don't throw the ball downfield. It's remedial coaching. And you know he likes to throw it downfield because you watch them at USC. And it's possible to turn it around with the right offensive coach, Sam Darnold, did you ever think he would be in the MVP running Bryce Young today looks better than CJ. Stroud. That would have seemed outrageous a year ago. He got the right offensive coach. And by the way, Baker Mayfield's got an offensive coordinator that's gonna get head coaching opportunities. You can turn this puppy around. You don't even need a head coach. If you get the right coordinator, you can see magic. But I mean you start looking at Darnold, you look at Baker, you look at Bryce young I don't think you can allow a ten game losing streak to define this kid. But this is something I reported. Got a lot of pushback before he was drafted that privately and quietly, he didn't want to make a scene, but he and his camp had reservations about the Chicago franchise, and all of them are on display. He's on his second play caller. They won't pay their offense line. I mean, it's I you're watching it, I'm watching it. Seattle gave them multiple opportunities. It was dink and dunk down the field, and that's not who he is. And he's not a loser as well. This game was there for the taking, but they just don't have the infrastructure. And again I love that Darnold and Baker and Bryce Younger having a resurgence because it proves how valuable coaching is in baseball. A lot of it's the payroll, and in the NBA, a lot of it's just you have two stars in the NFL. Coaching matters a lot. But every time he goes out, he doesn't throw anybody under the bus. There's a quarterback in New York who does that often. That's not what he does. He always says the right thing, and he did again last night. I was frustrated, still frustrated.
I'm gonna probably be frustrated until tomorrow, you know, after I get a you know, get a chance to watch it and things like that.
So yeah, I mean, I didn't play well enough.
I didn't I didn't do I didn't help put the team in a good position to win a better position to win.
And you know, that's what it is. He has yet to throw a teammate, a coach, the organization under the bus, not one time. Could have ten game losing straight could have. So tip of the cap to Caleb and the Chicago fans who are bearing witness to an organization that is lost at sea. So there's a story I saw this morning, and I've said through the years, I think Mike McCarthy's a good coach. Don't put him in Andy Reid's category or Sean McVay, but I think he's a good coach, but I do think sometimes people get a reputation and it's unwarranted. And so there's a story this morning that Mike McCarthy has saved his job, and I know people freak out about that. But sometimes in life, I've been taught this, you have to flip the telescope. Yeah, I have to look at a situation and just say I'm gonna look at it the opposite way. And so let's really look at what he's done in his career, because I think Mike is a top ten coach, maybe closer to ten than one, but he's a top ten coach. So he takes over an old, rigid, stubborn Aaron Brett Farv, old, rigid, stubborn Brett Farv thirty seven, didn't want to change his ways, got him in his last year in Green Bay, thirteen and three NFC Championship. Farv leaves. There's this raw, talented get Aaron Rodgers from California, who's been poking Farv in the ribs forever. We know now that Aaron don't. We can be a little difficult, prickly. Sometimes it feels like he's almost working behind the scenes against you. And he wins the Super Bowl with Aaron and then he gets fired, and then he goes to Dallas and with I think it's fair to say the most overpaid quarterback in the league three straight twelve wins season and makes him an MVP runner up. Look at the quarterbacks in this league who really think Dak should be an MVP runner up? Two separate times, Dak gets hurt and they go to Cooper Rush, who both times gets on a heater. Yeah, Cooper Rush. I'll say this slowly because it's hard to comprehend. Is nine to four as a starter in the NFL in front of a rebuilding on line with no run game since he took over in Dallas. I'm not sure you're aware of this. The only offense that is better is Josh Allen and the Bills. Since he took over Dallas, they've had They have had sixteen times they have scored forty or more points. Mahomes and Andy Reid have done it eight times in that time span. Think about that, and remember what I had Greg Cosel on earlier this week. And this is not a talented offense outside of CD Lamb. Remember what he said about Dallas coaching.
I think their coaching staff's doing a great job because what you see a lot with them, as you see a ton of different personnel packages, a ton of different formation looks a lot of shifts in motions. They're giving a defense a lot to have to deal with. Rush was phenomenal on third down. He was phenomenal against their pressures, and the Bucks pressured a lot. Now he's a guy that you need to get pressure on and the pressure must be effective, which it was not by the Bucks because he tends to fall away from throws. But one thing about him, he's been very decisive the more he plays.
Yeah, that sounds a good coaching. I watched Justin Herbert get flummixed by the Tampa defense, and then I watched Cooper Rush excel against the Tampa defense. That sounds like good coaching. Farv NFC Championship, Rogers Super Bowl DAK twelve wins Cooper Rush heater. But I think a lot of this goes back. He has coached two of the highest profile franchises in America, the Green Bay Packers and at Al's Cowboys. And when you lose or get fired at one of those, it's stamps. You it's a smell you can't get off you. But don't we now realize, and we probably didn't then, that Aaron's difficult. Aaron and Matt Lafleur were never that close. Feels like Jordan Love and Lafleur are closer, and Aaron and Robert Salah they were buddies too. This is not a shot at Aaron, but when you flip the telescope and you have perspective and you kind of look at Aaron, how he's aged and personal relationships and Mike McCarthy, maybe you don't feel the same way about Mike McCarthy that you did, like seven to eight years ago. So it's interesting when I read this story, I think, oh, they're bringing Mike McCarthy back. Greg cole Sell's like, yeah, it's a really well coached team. Cooper Rush is really decisive. He's great on third down. Do you think he's great on third down because he's great? Or maybe it's coaching. You know, you watched the Bears last night. You see what bad coaching looks like. Cooper Rush beats Tampa. That's what good coaching looks like. So that's where we stand today.
J Mack.
We got a lot of stuff today. You know, it's a Friday, and I'm thinking last night. Generally, in my life, I feel like I got the greatest job in the world because I get to watch sports. It doesn't feel like work. Last night felt like work. I probably would have been watching an Amazon or Netflix documentary, if you know, if I had a choice. But I will say there's a lot that came out of that game, and not just for Chicago.
Was it more than the rain?
Was it Seattle just playing, Hey, hey, Gino Smith, we can't risk you throwing the ball.
I mean he had one red zone pass. Did you see that early? It was right to a Bears.
Player and they just stopped throwing the ball down the field. You at all, No, you could tell the Seattle staff is like, okay, weren't You could tell Seattle's game plan was we're a better team. Let's just get out of here with a win. Once Gino almost threw a red zone pick. I mean, they just simplified underneath dink and dunk.
You can if you were watching Metcalf and Jackson Smith Nijigba, they were unhappy with It's like, so what is this?
What are we doing?
Okay, so uh, smart, people make mistakes, and I'm gonna give you example of that coming up blazing five, top of the hour. Your peck so you've been on a heater all year? Coming up today?

Welcome in. You know, there's a story. Nick Scherrani is the coach of the Philadelphia Eagles. When he got the job, he wasn't ready for it. He's kind of been. He wins a lot of games, but a lot of this is I think Philadelphia is a superstar general manager Howie Roseman, Jalen Hurts is very good. They've drafted extraordinarily well. They've hit on a lot of great players, a lot of Georgia Bulldogs. But there's another story now that last week, after losing to Washington former Eagle Zach Ertz, there's a little bit of video that you know, he and Nick Sirianni. You can it's in the background, you can't see much. There's a report here. It got a little bit heated, and I mean, listen, I feel this way about Philadelphia. There they are right. There is If you know the name of a team security guard, it's probably a problem. And the zach Ertz story, I mean, ask yourself, what do these things have in common? Nick Sarianni trading insults with fans, Road fans and Philadelphia fans. Nick Sirianni had to be held back by an assistant coach on his staff. That is incredible. That's not even a coordinator, it's a position coach getting in his face. There's Nick Sarianni at the Super Bowl was gonna put his hand and make some gesture, and Jalen Hurts had to manage his coach. I mean, what do these all have in common? Oh wait, it's Nick Serianni. And so at some point this is a proud organization. And remember Philadelphia is a highly emotional city to begin with, so you know, having a highly emotional coach is not great. You know Andy Reid And I'm not saying coaches and players don't have their issues. I mean Andy Reid got hip checked by Travis Kelsey in the Super Bowl, but he totally diffused the situation. He got Travis Kelcey right. Travis went on to have a great game, so that wasn't even part of the story. We don't even talk about it like it was just a moment. It was diffused, and that's what a coach is for. And I can hear a lot of Philly fans, hey, it's kind of funny. Coaches aren't stand up comedians. Whenever I hear that, well, it's kind of funny. I don't want my quarterback to be funny. I don't want my head coach to be funny. It's okay if a wide receiver, you know, oon, has a sense of humor and his funny. I don't want my coach to be that, or my GM to be that. Dave Chappelle is paid to be funny, and he is. You know that, that's funny. I don't want my coach to be So here's my hottest take on this. This is my hot take that if Philadelphia loses in the first round or the second round, Bill Belichick can get out of his contract in July. This July, that's my hot take. And Belichick already got his kid at Carolina to be the DC. Why did Carolina allow Belichick to have that? Because Belichick knows there's two jobs that are fascinating Philly and Buffalo. If Sean McDermott gets bounced early, that job will be looking for a coach. If Nick Sirianni gets bounced earlier, you think it's a hot take. Kevin Durant went from his rival to the Golden State Warriors. I thought the chances of that happened were zero. Stuff happens now. Zach Ertz, the former Eagle, is down playing the Washington story and incident.
I thinking I had a great relationship when I was there. We still have a great relationship, and I think it's definitely been blown away out of proportion. We spoke, we're good. There's no ill feelings on my part, and then I don't think there's any ill feelings on his far. It's just something in the heat of the moment. I probably got blown out of proportion. It may be misunderstanding, but at the end of the day, him and I are fine. Everyone knows how I feel about that place in that building, but at the same time, I love being here.
All right.
I just I'm just saying. Jeffrey Lewie, Howie Roseman ownership general managers. They've moved off. Chip Kelly had a winning record, Doug Peterson won a Super Bowl. Andy Reid was a legend. They've moved off really good coaches. So you know, anybody that's watching this show that runs a business, I have a small business. If you run a business, you know you're constantly, perpetually tweaking. And it's kind of the fun of business. And so when I see problems, Remember the NFL had a catch problem a few years ago, Like the catch rule was confusing. What's a cat's w what's not a catch? And Roger Goodell came on this show and I said, and I said, respectfully, sir, I can't tell what's a catch. And he acknowledged it's a problem, and they fixed it. I mean, it was like a decade long issue. Is that a catch? Des Bryant Packers, that's a catch? No, it's not. It like changed outcomes. And so Major League Baseball had a ten year, fifteen year issue, ratings going down in attendance. Rob Manfred made the purest angry pitchclock. It worked. Ratings are up, the game's faster. I watch more baseball. The NBA ratings have been in declined, and now they're bragging about look at our ratings on Christmas. Listen, Steph and Lebron get ratings, and the NFL games were in the afternoon, not the night, so they went unapposed. But when I look at tweaking, what does the NBA have that is really really good? They got three or four things playing to their advantage. Number one, for the first time I can remember, the three most iconic Northeast basketball franchises, Nicks, Sixer, Celtics all excellent. That's something it's like having, you know, the Red Sox, Yankees and Braves being great in the Eastern time zone. It matters. Those are iconic franchises. So the Sixers have stars, they're good, the Knicks are fun to watch, and the Celtics are great. And remember eighty percent of this country's population is like Denver East. It matters. Those are big media markets. So that's it's got it's going for it. The other thing it's got going for it Steph and Lebron are still remarkable players, highly productive. The other thing it's got going for it is these international players are unbelievable. Now, they don't want to be faces of the league, but the skill level in this league has never been greater. Wemby is seven foot four, He's crossing guys up on the dribble and hitting threes in st Jokic is the best passer on the NUGG. He's a seven footer. So the skill level the assets are fantastic. The players don't get in trouble. I hate the load management crap, but they don't get in trouble. You know, NBA guys they like to you know, they like to score points, they like to hang out, they do their social media. They're not getting in trouble. Some of them are different personalities, like KD, but KD is still great. Lebron's still really good. STEP's good, the Sixers, the Knicks, and the Celtics are excellent, and the skill level is through the roof. I just think it has to. I think there's a couple of things here, a couple of things long term may not be fixable. I don't like AAU basketball. I think the International European system is much better. The players come out with more skill, they come up more focused and mature, and they play fewer games. AU basketball is a money grab. It's gross. Players come out, they've been coddled, they play too many games. They don't care about competition. I think AAU basketball Steve Kerz talked about this. It's not good. Our system needs to be tweaked. I'm not sure if you can, but the things you can tweak. Too many three pointers make it a deeper shot. Have the three pointer go into the bench. I like three pointers. It needs to be part of the game, not ninety a night. The other thing that we have to be honest about is David Stern, the late commissioner, The late great David Stern used to tell people this privately all the time, and Adam Silver would tell you privately, when you compete against football, college or pro, you're not going to get big ratings. The NBA is always lived off. It's playoffs. You weren't watching unless you lived in Chicago. You weren't watching Toronto play the Bulls in the regular season either. You weren't the iconic moments or against the Cavs in the playoffs and the Knicks in the playoffs, and the Utah Jazz and Charles Barkley and the Sonics, that's the iconic moment. So regular season ratings when you're going up against the beast known as the NFL, and the increasing popularity of the twelve team college football playoff you're not going to get ratings then. I mean, teams don't even have their defensive rotations and their rosters set in December and early January. It's always been a trading deadline on league. Nobody's beaten the NFL. In fact, here's this is true. Netflix even realizes that they lose a big chunk of their viewers doing football season, so they don't debut their best stuff in the football season. Ask yourself, when do you watch Netflix the most? When football season ends from about February fifteenth until Labor Day. That's when people are watching their Netflix. So even the streaming services understand what football does. It craters everything else not called NFL football. That's just the reality. That's why the NBA had good Christmas ratings a Lebron's staff, b Philly, New York, Boston, or iconic markets on the Northeast. The quality was good, the games were close, and the NFL didn't play at night. Chiefs Ravens played in the day. That helps. But I think some of the problems, like baseball are very solvable, very quickly. The three point shot. I also, I'm a big believer in this. I would bring back the handcheck. I want physicality. I like physicality. I think physicality is at the core of hockey. I think physicality is at the core of football, college and pro. And I think the NBA it's too easy, it's too finesse. I love intense playoff basketball, but to the basket, guys get physical. The more physical players are, the more intense they get. And there's kind of a passive, a passive finesse nature to three point shots. Your way out here, I shoot, I go down the other end of the floor. I want bodies colliding. I want physicality around the basket. That's why you get that in the playoffs. Sometimes you come down the floor, you need a basket. You don't need a three. You need a basket because the scores go down. Every basket circumstantially is more important. So it's gonna be fine. And I think there's things that's got going for it. Stephan Lebron still great sixers, Nick Celtics outstanding. The skill level from Europe over is unbelievable. We got a domestic issue. We don't have a skill issue. Our domestic product, our domestic au is just not good enough. All right, blazing five top of the hour. You know, generally. Blazing five. You said something a couple of weeks ago, and it's stum. I left the show. I was injured, and you said, you know, you pick a lot of the big games, a lot of the TV games. And I thought about that going home, and there used to be a time in my life that I would bet the corner TV game. I would bet the ugly game. And I've gotten away from it. Boy, do I love a stinker in Blazing five.
Going back to your roots. I'm going Tennessee Jags this weekend. You fired on that.
Hey, I got standard, so that what I can't watch. But I've got a couple of games that maybe not the best television game, and I'm excited for it. Blazing five. Top of the Hour, Eric Mangini, former Bear coach Dave wantstat live in Los Angeles on a Friday, It's the Herd.
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays at noon Easter non am Pacific.
Al Right, it's our two. It is a Friday, live in Los Angeles. It's the Hurt. Bring your energy, folks. It's the best time. It's the best stretch of the year. Last night, it was a stinker it's the best stretch of the year. Say what you want. I'm counting the days to pictures and catchers reporting I'm all fired up. J Max has been in a heater with his picks this year. I'll acknowledge it now. My picks for divisions and playoffs has been unbelievable. You have to look at me sometimes and think how does coward pick division winners? If I look at you sometimes and think how do you always get the right team?
Well, yeah, your logic is strong. Just take the best quarterback and it usually works out.
But by the way, four games in the NBA decided last night in the final ten seconds, two mid range game winners to three point game winners.
So maybe they're listening.
Callin say that again. Mid range game winner.
Tyler Hero, your boy mid range game winner, and someone else had one and then two three point game winners.
Exciting night on the hardwood.
I know you were watching. Yeah, okay, five, been a rough year. What do you think I'm gonna stop doing this, puppy, Let's go.
Let's blaze it up.
Fired enough, It's Collins Blazing five sponsored by Draftcakes.
Bronco, said Bengal.
Listen, I think it's it's my favorite bet of the week. Broncos plus three and a half half. I get Sean Payton, a great offensive coach with extra rest, and I have the Bengals on a little shorter week they played a Saturday game. I like Denver. They're seven to zero against teams with a losing record. They lead the NFL and sack differential, and that matters their second in the NFL in sacks because Burrow's offensive line protection is horrid, so I think Burrow's gonna be under constant duress. I think bow Knicks will have more time to throw. And remember, the Bengals have yet to beat a legitimate number one quarterback this year. It's been Gardner Minshew and Will Levis and Dorian Thompson Robinson. The Bengals defense is bad all the way around. I think Denver take the points. Wins at Cincinnati twenty eight to twenty seven.
Raiders at Saints.
I don't bet the Saints much, but I'm gonna take the Saints at home plus one. Why any team that gets humiliated in a standalone game usually plays with intensity, especially if they're home they're coming off a loss. They're three and three under their interim coach, and their losses have been to playoff teams, the Packers and the Commanders and their Rams. Listen, the Packers are beating up on a lot of people. Their defense is playing well ten sacks last three games, and the Raiders offense is anemic, under twenty points in six straight games. They've trailed by ten points in fourteen of their last fifteen games this year. So the Raiders get into these huge holes. I think the Saints will play with intensity. I'm gonna take the Saints plus one to win twenty four to twenty.
Jad said Bills.
I took Buffalo last week. I'm taking them again. They're seven to zero at home. They played like crud last week and still won. The Jets injury report of many of their best players are hurt. The Jets are falling apart. Listen, here's Buffalo. They don't give the ball up. You can't get the Josh Allen seven and two against the Jets, and they're taking the ball away. Meanwhile, the Jets outscored in the second half against the Rams thirteen to nothing. One of six teams one versus six, excuse me, against teams with a winning record, I think they're over their depths here. I'm gonna take Buffalo to bounce back. I think it's a reasonable division game. It's not a blowout, but I'm gonna swaddle the nine and a half points, lay the points twenty eight to seventeen, Bills winning cover.
Falcons that comand there.
This feels like a jmac matt I like the Falcons plus four. It's a primetime game of two young quarterbacks. Listen Michael Pennix. The offense is different. Eight for fourteen on third down, he gets rid of the ball quickly. It can move. No sacks by the Giants, and the defense is actually playing well. Raheem Morris has this defense for Atlanta playing well, third in the NFL last month with sixteen sacks, and they're taking the ball away. The Commanders for their last five wins have come by five points or fewer. Their defense stinks. Terry McLaurin will play, but he's banged up. The Falcons defense is playing very well, a young defense, and Raheem Morris has got him playing intense football. Upset Baby Falcons thirty twenty seven, upset over the Commanders.
Ohio State versus Ore again.
Well, I called it Before the season, I said, take the Ducks to beat him at Otson and take the Buckeyes when they meet again. I'm gonna take Ohio State minus two and a half. Listen, top ten in the country in yards per play on offense and defense. Ohio State's got better players. Will Howard criticize them all? You want second highest completion percentage in the country, over seventy three percent, thirty six touchdowns. He moves Okay to nine picks. Oregon's had a long layoff. I don't necessarily love that they could be rusty early and Penn State drop thirty seven points and almost three hundred rushing yards on Oregon. I don't think you can win a Natty with a bad defense. Boise State moved the ball on Oregon, Penn State, Ohio State. Ohio State's defense this season. You saw it against Tennessee. It's in a class by itself. Ohio State wins the game. I think it's gonna be wildly entertaining, but I'm gonna lay the points and take Ohio State thirty four to thirty. On DraftKings Sportsbook, bet five bucks, get one hundred and fifty in bonus bets. If your five dollars bet wins. Download the app. The promo code has heard h E r D when you sign up my bets again. I'm going for a couple of uts. I think Atlanta and Michael Pennix is a real thing. The rookie from Washington gets a w I also like the Broncos and their rookie quarterback winning on the road, and I'll take you know what. I'm gonna take the Saints to bills in Ohio state. Jay McKinney thoughts on that, you see you.
Have a strong only what disagreement is I'm on the Bengals at three, but obviously that's a different line than three and a half.
But overall, hey, good stuff, man.
One more Herd.

Thirty nine years coaching college or pro football, six with the Bears, five with the Dolphins, last Dolphin coach to win a playoff game. He's my buddy, Dave Wanstadt. He's joining us live from Chicago right now. Well, I gotta imagine that town is unhappy. I mean, it's not losing, it's the way they lost. I don't even know is it good? I mean, is it a job you'd even consider taking? Is it that bad? What are the positives there?
Well, the positive are that you're gonna have a full house every week, and this is a football towel. I mean even in tough times, you know when the Bulls were having their heyday, and obviously the Blackhawks and on and on. I mean, it's a Bear's talent it always will be. And they have a quarterback that's got some talent. So yes, it's a it's a dark good job.
But no, you're right.
The time has just turned upside down right now. All that I do is radio and TV form. And I was walking up the other morning at seven o'clock to do a show. I didn't even had a couple of coffee yet, and the guys stopped me on the street and wanted to start cussing me on doing those damn Bears once.
Then I said, Bucky, Relax, Relax. I mean he's got how'd you like to work next to him all day?
Yeah?
Wow?
Yeah. So here's my take. Would you go with a young offensive coordinator like a Ben Johnson and just get Caleb Bright. Would you go with a guy that's more of a tough, physical culture builder like vrabel Is? There is there a perfect choice?
Well, I think here and obviously I'm a defensive guy, so people would say I'm gonna side with the defense. But in this particular case, you know, I and I was at coach at the University of Pittsburgh when Mike Cammon got hired at the Steelers, and he had Bruce Airings, and he had Dick Lebox, and he had Ben Roethlisberger who had won a Super Bowl. Mike can come in be the head coach over everything and play that role with a young quarterback. You know, there's nine there's what five rookie starting this year? Yeah, five second year or four second three or four second year quarterbacks. So my point is the offensive guy you want somebody I think at the Bears, that's an offensive minded coach.
That can grow with tayleb. Now when you look at these offensive coaches.
I wouldn't look at a one year wonder offensive coordinator or a six game wonder offensive coordinator. You look at these guys that have some history to them calling two or three years. Because let me tell you what happened to me when I was at the Bears. Right third year, we go to the playoffs, win a playoff game here. The next year, my offensive coordinator leaves me, Ron Turner. He goes to University of Illinois. I get another offensive coordinator. I'm at the Dolphins. Two years into it, playoffs, twelve wins, eleven wins.
Chen Daily leaves me, goes to Georgia Tech. I hire North.
Turner comes on two years with North, winning ten games a year.
North takes the Raiders jump.
So going on my fifth year at to Dolphins, I was on my third offensive.
Coordinator and they all say this is the catch.
They all say, oh no, no, we'll make the terminology and we'll keep the system the same for the quarterback.
They don't.
They all believe in things that they've been successful. And that's what you get into. That's why offensive guy that has experienced I.
Think really would benefit the quarterback.
You know, it's interesting interesting as we look at the emergence of run games Baltimore, Detroit, the Rams with Kyron Williams. You start looking at the NFL right now Saquon Barkley Eagles. The run game is back. And do you have a belief why. I mean, there was a two year period nobody wanted to pay him. I'm looking around the league now Washington, Atlanta leads their division, all the teams, now, Buffalo with James Cook. The run game is back. Why in your opinion?
Well, number one, I think that it helps the young quarterbacks immensely. Yeah, if you got a young quarterback and you can run the football, boy, does that helped him as far as being in manageable third dons. That's the opposite of what the Bears are doing. Bears are in And I had a great conversation with Troy Aikman the other and he was on my radio show and Troy was talking about how the Toys, Shanahan Tree, the mcvey's, the guy at Minnesota obviously McVeigh, all these guys that come under that tree lafloor. They all are under center a lot of the time, and it's all timing steps.
And get the ball out quick. Uh and he said, And Troy made the point.
He says, that's where obviously your best play action passes come. Who's going to fall for a play action pass from the guy in a shotgun? So I think that the guys that are running it, And I look this morning, it's funny you bring that up. Six of the top ten running backs in the NFL right now are all the top teams you mentioned. Obviously you know most of them right there. So my point is, I think that it helps the young quarterbacks. It gives your quarterback a chance that convert third dons and obviously you're going to move the change, you're going to score points.
It rest your defense, you know.
I mean all these teams now, all of a sudden, they're getting better with defense as the year goes on. Why is that because they're rested. They're not playing as many snaps as if they're throwing it every time.
Philadelphia's coach Nick Siriani, I have multiple instances hand gesture of a Super Bowl arguing with a position coach you had feisty last week with zach Ertz yelling at fans it's not the way you would have done it. I mean, Philly's an emotional town. He's an emotional guy. So it's working. But what do you make of it when you see this stuff?
Yeah, that turns me off. I mean, I don't believe in that stuff. I wouldn't do that stuff. But I will say this, I think the last few weeks, Nick's kind of gotten a little bit quieter, and he's and they're one of the few teams they're in the top ten in offense and defense and two other things.
It tells me that he's got control of his team.
You know, they have the second fewest penalties in the National Football League. Yeah, they're plus six and turnover margin in the in the NFL right now, So all the things that win game for you sometimes that people don't want to talk about.
Boy, they are doing a very good job.
And they went out and they hired Vic Vangio, you know, and they got the top defense right now in the NFL. So I think, you know, I had a problem with some of the things that he did, but I think overall he's doing a very good job. He's got good people, he's letting them more. Kellen Moore is doing a great job with the offense, and that's that's the key to being the head coach.
Okay, so I gotta ask you, Packers are going to Minnesota to play the Vikings. So you got JJ McCarthy. And if you let Sam Donald go, you got a rookie contract for five years. You can go buy any weakness. Daniel Jones can be a backup, or you can keep Donald, who's red hot. What do you if you ran the team, you're the GM of this team, even if you're the coach, what do you do with Donald?
Now?
You can argue, Hey, everybody's going to succeed with Jordan Madison, and everybody's going to succeed with Justin Jefferson and the TJ. Hawkinson? Is it the parts? Is it? Sam? What do you do with Donald in that situation?
Well, just just look at Chicago.
I mean, look at our receivers, right, don't say, uh, Dj Moore, uh Kellen Kellen right, uh Alan, They've got his commet at tight end. They've got as good as skill people as anybody. And it doesn't mean anything. I would keep Sam Donald. You know, and I think you could probably get him. What did Baker sign for a call in three years?
Around one hundred million? Yeah, I think that he would.
He would be because you don't know JJ McCarthy. I mean, look how many of these first round quarterbacks that miss.
You know, I think JJ is going to.
Be a great player, but we don't know that where we see what Sam does and uh, I don't know. I think the Bikings are going to come out of this thing and end up winning the division.
I really do.
Yeah, host the Packers this weekend. Finally, you do a lot of college football. You were obviously a coach at Pitt. You're a great recruiter. You were tied with Jimmy Johnson for years at the college level. Ohio State, Oregon. Listen the first round of the playoffs, the road teams were awful. I think we go to neutral fields, the games will be much more competitive. I really worry about Texas. I always feel Texas leaves too many points on the sideline. I watched Ohio State and I think they're so dynamic. Ryan Day gets a lot of crap. You do Big ten Networks stuff, so you've seen Ohio State every week. They lost to Michigan in Oregon. But if you felt like all year long, did you feel like Ohio State was the best team? Did you feel Oregon was? What do you make of that matchup?
No, I thought Oregon was, to be honest with you, up until about two weeks ago, three weeks ago, I think Ohio State.
Everyone they have the most talent.
When they played Oregon the first time, it's very difficult.
Yes, it was out of Oregon, we know that, but it's.
Very difficult to practice the type of speed early in the year that Oregon has on their football team, at running back, at quarterback.
At receiver.
Defensively, they are a fast football team. And you know, I remember we were at Miami and we've been played the Oklahomas in the world.
I mean, it took us time we could.
You couldn't simulate that in practice, right, But I think it's the year year's going on. I think Ohio State has fond its rhythm. I think they've recommitted to the running game where they're a lot more balanced right now. And I like Ohio State right now where they're at. Early on, they were just so caught up in this wide receiver talent and We're going to open it up and on and on. I mean that's why they lost to Oregon the first game. I think they had seven runs the whole second half. You know, so they no, seriously, they've recommitted to the run game. They've got two outstanding backs and all those kids that there was about seven guys that would have been top two three round draft picks at Ohio State. They all came back for one reason to win that championship. And boy, I think I think last week beating Tennessee that was that was a lot of pressure. I mean, all everybody just talked about this is scc SEC Tennessee. You know, everybody should be in playoffs from the SEC.
I'll tell you why.
It wasn't even a game that did a lot for Ohio State's confidence.
Yeah, I agree. Dave Wanstadt one of the good guys, Bears, Dolphins, Big ten Network, great seniors, always coach.
All right, call him be safe buddy, all right.
In Chicago and his condo overlooks the city. Uh he has so much information and so many stories, and uh, I don't know, I was very much rabel in Chicago that Ben Johnson thing after last night. I don't know, I'm watching Bryce Young resurgence, Sam resurgence, Baker resurgence. All about a coordinator and an offensive coach. I mean, it's just Herbert with Harball. Herbert's always been good, Jared Goff with Dan Campbell. Jared Goff's always been good. That's different. But when a quarterback has lost, how do you resurrect the French? How do you resurrect the quarterback, not the franchise, the kid. It's generally offensive coach, certain sensibility, the defensive guys don't have.

That Kay, What are the Fox Sports happed To make your picks?
One of the questions is which QB will have the most passing yards Colin We got Baker Mayfield versus the Panthers, Jordan Long versus the Vikings, Darnold versus the Packers, or.
Cooper Rush in Philadelphia. Baker Mayfield against the Panthers.
I like that call.
Though he has struggled in I think the defensive coordinator got there.
He struggled in three or four games against them, including earlier this year. But given those options, I don't hate your pick. I think you're warming up just for the stretch run.
There, Hey, couple of five and o's will change America's opinion.
All everybody cares about his playoffs. Nail those pick against the Chiefs.
There you go.
I had a rough regular season. All right, here we go. The former newspaper guy made headlines for a living. Then he wanted to make some real money and moved into digital and TV. Tomorrow's headline today Chargers Patriots. I stayed away in Foxboro. I stayed away from this one.
Man.
What do you make of it?
Listen?
I don't love the card this week, I'll be upfront. I don't love it. I mean I bet these five Bowl games today like codo garbage games, just through money.
I have pizza money for fun. But let's start Chargers Patriots. I like this Chargers team. I like the vibes. Patriots were good last week, ended up losing. The headline will be McConkie, see maconkie, do boats go bananas? I will take the Chargers in New England. This line's at four and a half. It's creeping up a little bit. There's some interesting stuff here. So hey, Christmas week, who wants to travel east east to play a game in the cold weather.
However, Charge have had four to one pm starts this year. They have dominated the first half of all those games. They've led at halftime of all four. Now they're not playing great teams one with Pittsburgh. But what does that say, Colin? That's a Jim Harbaugh thing. This dude is always prepared. And I do look at this Patriots team.
They gave everything max effort last week in Buffalo, right, Hey, we want to play spoiler division rival. I think they let their guard down a little bit this week. I don't like some of the vibes in New England, some of the chatter from the head coach Mayo is he coming back?
Are we certain?
Do you think he's definitely back next year? Because yes, okay? And you think Kraft is going on the cheap all right? So I'll go with Chargers. Drake may has had a pretty good, you know run this year.
I think he's shown well, but this Chargers defense has played excellent.
I'll take the Chargers twenty seven to thirteen.
Tomorrow's headlines today Broncos at the Bengals. I love Denver in this spot.
You know, listen, we love talking Broncos on this show.
You have made them like what maybe like the like the show favorite.
You love this team because you're all over them. However, the headline will be mall walking Bengals keep Broncos out of step.
Look at that little mallwalking. My mom likes to go to the mall and walk around in Florida because it's too hot. I cannot get enough of Patrick Shurtan versus Jamar Chase, so I've been digging into this matchup. Patrick Shurtan this season one touchdown allowed, he has allowed one catch over twenty yards. He's been locked down. But he's going up against Chase, who leads the NFL in receptions, yards, touchdowns. He's on fire. They met in twenty twenty one. You want to guess who had the better of that matchup. Jamar Chase one catch for three yards against Cirtan.
Now is twenty twenty one. A lot has changed, but this is interesting.
If T Higgins cannot go, I will not feel good about my Bengals pick. But ultimately I think Cincinnati gets it. I think they're on a mission. I would not be surprised if we hear after the fact Joe Burrow made it impassion plea.
In the locker room.
I want to get in the playoffs. You're seeing a different Burrow. He's been fired up on the bench, talking back.
A little bit to the coach, little intent.
I like Burrow here getting the dub and the Bengals win and cover.
You said your mom likes walking in the mall JMX. Everybody's mom likes walking.
Yeah, that's a grandma thing. I did not know that.
Okay, Yeah, tomorrow's headlines today the game that I didn't put in the Blazing five, but it was the last game. I like the Rams in this spot. It's a number situation. What say you, I could have swore Tuesday on this show, you lot.
I did.
Yeah, so if the number got worse, who cares. It's six and a half. The headline will be Pooka boo, I see you playing Rams.
Ain't no fun in games. Oh my gosh. This is the ultimate revenge spot of the week. Do you remember the Cardinals smashed them this year forty one to ten, ultimate massive beatdown. Pooka did not play. Cooper Cup left in the first quarter and it was just an absolute beatdown. I like the Rams here big. This feels like a little payback. And if you're Arizona man, you went into last week, come on, we got we were leading the division and it's starting to fall apart.
You're playing the Panthers.
You start slow, you come back, you lose in overtime, overtime loss, got to travel back home.
So Lake kil wounds.
I'm seeing both tackles out. I'm seeing James Connor is questionable. Does Connor just say, hey, let me just shut it down?
Nothing to play for? I like the Rams here McVeigh. I wouldn't be surprised that this was thirty seven to twenty. Rams really put on a show. Hey, you gave out the number. What is McVay like ten and one in December? He is a great late season coach, and I think they put it on himy.
Andy, Reid and Belichick really good when it gets frosty. Tomorrow's headline Fay Colts at Giants. I thought about this one too. I tell you I like that Colts roster. I do, and I like the Colts a lot. You see that number, it's coming down, and I'll tell you why.
The headline will be just like we drew it up, Giants get closer to locking up number one pick.
Look at Dabole there, listen, Drew Locke. He was bad against Atalanta, which is a bottom feed of defense. However, in the last thirty minutes here, Anthony Richardson has not practiced yet. All week, they thought he was going to go today, so now they just listed him as questionable.
And Joe Flacco was taking first team reps yeah all week. So now it's Joe Flacco, which to me, when last week saw Flacco.
That was pretty rough. It was pretty wrong.
He was awful. Yeah, and now I'm a little buyers for worse.
However, like like the headline said, this is a Giants team that wants the number one pick badly. You look at who's starting on the offensive line for them. A lot of defensive players were who are these dudes practice squad guys?
I mean Colin, They're not a competitive team this year. I do think Flacco can do enough.
Jonathan Taylor, by the way, running wild, he is having a season.
They got a good team.
Man.
Oh I did Seattle and the Colts they're quarterback away. I like the rosters. I like the GMS.
We like Stichen. I think the Colts will be fine here at seven and a half's a big number to be laying on the road. But the Giants going for the winless season at home. It's bad in New York between the Jets and the Giants. It is. It's a It's a rough go.
For New York football.
Two more to go. I'm interested in this one. Tomorrow's headlines today you're your optimism is has pivoted to skepticism and cynicism on the Jets, Jets, Bills, WHATSM and what like?
July in August, come on, when Aaron Rodgers wasn't saying nonsense Colin, this one could get ugly. The headline will.
Be green with envy, wicked.
Wits from West Melts. Aaron Rodgers, you know, Marjinie said something awesome earlier. Aaron's talking like he wants to be released. I know, you know, I didn't.
I thought at the time he was just taking a shot. But from Mangini, who was a head coach to say that, and Mangini.
Dealt with Woody, he knows Woody.
You know how ticked off Woody Johnson must be.
And oh, by the way, I'm looking at the Jets all of a sudden, DeVante Adams not practicing this week, Soft Gardner not practicing.
You know, the Jets injury reports are best players. The Penn State tackle out. Two other linemen haven't practiced. Avt has not. So this line's starting to creep up to nine and a half. One of the producers just texting me it's hitting ten in some spots. So I know Buffalo has nothing to technically play for, right, but this is Buffalo Jets.
Buffalo homes are tough out.
Yeah, I think this one could get ugly and go sideways. I'll go thirty one to seven bills.
With Okay, I took the Buckeyes over the Ducks. Tomorrow's headlines today that Boise State Nifney Lions games got your interest peaked.
So we love the playoff last week, I mean it was it was spectacular.
Well you did. I took dogs, warming my heart. You took favorites.
You were right, a favorites role at home. Now we go neutral site this week. Okay, I do like your Ohio State pick. I would add that now these games are Wednesday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Yes, yeah, so we got some time will chew them up.
But the headline for this one will be Ashton powers running back, shags game balls, after movie performance. I'm going with it outright. Upset here, bubble digit dog give me Boise State taking down Penn State.
Wow.
I took the points already and the more I dig in, listen, I like Penn State a lot. They're great at home.
We know into the white out scenario against SMU, it was it was a scene and SMU gave the game away. I don't think boys, he's gonna do that.
And you look, I'm just telling you, if you want to have fun, go look up Ashton gent versus Oregon this year. Oregon could not stop him under and nobody supposed to. Nobody stops this guy.
And I know the competition wasn't great, but we're gonna see this guy become like one of those Oh.
This guy's legit. Carving up Penn State should be a good game. I'm more fired up for this, I think than any of the games.
I'll have to state it.
Oregon's great. Texas Arizona State a little.
Like Georgia Notre Dame Baby, Well, it's a backup quarterback for Georgia's Georgia and and the Notre Dame stuff that's percolating behind the scenes, which we which we alluded to yesterday. I don't know if we get to it here at headlines, but there's the college football playoffs. I'm excited for you. No, it's gonna be great. We love We do this at the end of every week. I foreshoot it. Picking up set, Let's go to the NFL schedule. Sorry, radio, I'm not going to read all the games. I like the Atlanta Falcons to upset the Washington Commanders. Michael Pennix impressed me. Do you have an upset?
Well, what's the line on the Falcons four and a half? Is that really an upset? Uh? Oh, Man, Colin, this is bleak.
I'd rather take Arizona State against Texas than any of this pooh poo platter.
Carolina at Tampa.
Yeah, yeah, I'll go.
Yeah, I guess I would go carry Carolina. We've been feisty late in this season. Man, and Winfield ruled out another receiver.
How about that? To beat up today? If you could draft Bryce young Er, CJ. Stroud, who would you take?
I can't do it out of the six game sample size. I would still take straft.
It's nice, looks pretty good. It's yeah, Bryce looks pretty good.
He has looked.
He's shown well. The Dallas game he did not play well. Yeah, a few weeks ago at home. Yeah, it's a it's a tough NFL's late this week and the three game Saturday, so there's not a billion games Sunday. You know, this is a hang with the fami a little bit weekend.
Yeah, well I'm Saturday, I'm gonna be watching football day.
Yeah, the Saturday games are musty.
I don't know how I'm gonna get out of family stuff, but you know, maybe put in a call, call me and act like there's like a big story, and then I'll just tell the family, hey I need some time away.
Breaking news or yeah yeah yeah we go all right. I can do that. And if there's a club we go to from time to time, it's a good time. Haven't been there in a while. You could go to the club.
I don't think the White's going to what you doing that?
But uh well, okay, sometimes you have to put your foot down on fun. Sometimes you got to stand on business. Okay, nice week of shows. Everybody want to thank Eric Mangini and Dave wand stat for stopping by. We've had a lot of fun this week. Next week is an all Timer Monday Tuesday Wednesday shows to Monday Tuesday shows all Timer stuff. We'll see it then third
