In June 2013, Sifiso Cedric Shez was released from prison after serving time. He was wrongfully accused of raping his daughter - after she admitted that her mother had coached her in making the accusations. Recently two men, wrongfully convicted for the killing of an off duty policeman, were released from a Pretoria prison. It's unclear how many people have been wrongfully accused. But according to the Innocence Project of South Africa, the reasons range from eyewitness misidentification, false confessions, use of improper forensic evidence, ineffective legal representation and police misconduct during the pre-trial stages of criminal proceedings. Whatever the reason it is certainly a miscarriages of justice. On the Forum @ 8 - we ask - how does a wrongful conviction affect the innocent?
