This week on the Five Minute Advocate, Julie Macken expresses deep concern over the Migration Amendment (Removal and Other Measures) Bill 2024 that was brought before Parliament last week and criticises the Albanese government’s failure to uphold humane immigration policies. Julie condemns the bill for its potential to criminalise non-cooperation with deportation which would then exacerbate indefinite detention and disregard legitimate claims for protection. Under this bill, there is potential for the government to hold the unilateral power to designate entire countries as “removal countries”, which would effectively restrict visa applications from those countries which Julie argues underscores the pattern of chaotic, incompetent and cruel management of Australia’s immigration policy.
