Mubin Shaikh’s story sounds almost impossible.

Born and raised in Toronto, Canada, he was just 18 when an identity crisis took him to Pakistan, where he came face-to-face with the Taliban, became enamored with their worldview and descended into jihadist extremism.

Then came the moment that changed everything.

Years later, Mubin was working undercover with Canadian security intelligence, infiltrating extremist networks and ultimately becoming a key human source in the Toronto 18 terrorism case.

In this extraordinary conversation with Erin Molan, Mubin reveals how a young Western man becomes radicalized, what the Taliban represented to him at the time, the psychological pull of meaning, identity and belonging, and the moment that finally forced him to question everything he believed.
