We spend around 90 per cent of our lives indoors, but how much thought do we give to the ways our homes affect our health and wellbeing? From the materials inside our walls to the direction our homes face, the design decisions we make can have a lasting impact on how we live.

In this episode of The Edit, Metricon Homes’ National Design Director Adrian Popple returns to join Home Beautiful Editor-in-Chief Elle Lovelock for a conversation about the future of wellness-led home design. Adrian shares the thinking behind Metricon Homes’ ambitious wellness concept home in Byron Bay, which brings together healthier materials, improved indoor air quality, passive design principles and a focus on sustainability to create a home that looks as beautiful as it feels to live in.

Plus, Adrian takes us on a virtual tour of the home, explains why the project is aiming for a 10-star energy rating, and reveals the design principles that could help create healthier, more comfortable homes for Australian homeowners.

This episode covers:
What a wellness home is and how it can support our health and wellbeing
The surprising ways building materials and electrical wiring can affect our indoor environment
Why indoor air quality, ventilation and natural materials matter
How passive solar design and home orientation can improve comfort and energy efficiency
Inside Metricon Homes’ wellness concept home, from its two pavilions to its dedicated wellness hub
The benefits of hempcrete, biophilic design and bringing the outdoors in
Why the project is aiming beyond the current seven-star energy rating, and what Adrian hopes to bring to future home designs
