Anita B. McBride is an American academic and former government official who served in the White House under three presidential administrations, most notably as Chief of Staff to the First Lady of the United States under Laura Bush from 2005 to 2009. Born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, she attended the University of Connecticut, earning a B.A. in international studies after starting out in pre-med. Earlier in her career, McBride was director of White House Personnel under Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush, and also served as director of the speaker's bureau at the United States Information Agency; her White House and State Department service in total spans two decades and three administrations. She is currently an executive-in-residence at American University's School of Public Affairs, where she directs the First Ladies Initiative, focusing on the historical roles of America's first ladies. She is a founding member of the First Ladies Association for Research and Education (FLARE) and has co-authored several books, including Remember the First Ladies: The Legacies of America's History-Making Women and the textbook U.S. First Ladies: Making History and Leaving Legacies. She remains a frequent commentator on the White House and the influence of first ladies, drawing on her senior roles under Presidents Reagan, George H.W. Bush, and George W. Bush.
