An ordinary day kayaking off the Cape coastline turned into an extraordinary rescue for Kirshia Govender from the International Ocean Institute. A young African penguin approached their kayaks, showing no fear and even climbing onto Kirshia’s kayak, resting against her as if seeking help. Realising the penguin was injured, Kirshia and her group paddled back to shore to get urgent care from the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds. Kirshia joins us to chat about this remarkable experience and her unique connection with the penguin.
