The Doug Gottlieb Show is gonna get you ready for college wall playoffs? Right man? How much fun is that gonna be? That's tomorrow, isn't it? Where is that? One game? Is tomorrow? We do? And that's some one game thing the day before everything? Right, So tomorrow is New Year's Eve day. But on New Year's Eve there's gonna be Penn State boy see State in the Fiesta Bowl. Man, that eleven boy line looks juicy, looks like a steak looks juicy. Then, of course on New Year's Day, which is great because it's more traditional, although Fiesta Bowl doesn't get to do New Year's Day, we get a Rose Bowl added signature time Ohio State Oregans. You still get old school Pac ten versus old school Big ten. You got Georgia and the Dog's Taken on the Irish and the Nightcap, and of course Texas and Arizona State in the Peach Bowl, which is weird, should have been the Fiesta Bowl. Anyway, we got those games on the first. We'll get you ready for those all week long. But before we can look forward to the week, we got to look back to the weekend. We do a little love and hate.
What did you love?
God? I love you?
And what did you hate?
These plays? So we all love little hate, love little hate. I low let's start with you, man, you're not on the show off times on Mondays? What'd you love? What'd you hate?
I love it?
So just to be clear, we're all starting with what we love, and then we all do what we hate. I don't go love.
Hate right now?
Correct, correct, all right, I'm gonna go with fantastic NFL finishes in three different windows. I loved the ending of Bengals Broncos Saturday afternoon on the Pacific time zone. I love the finish of Rams Cardinals Saturday night. And I love the finish of command Falcons Sunday night. And if I could pick one, I could, I would honestly pick the Commanders. I love the feel good story of the worst franchise in sports over the last couple of decades because of its owner at the time and their fans being rewarded with an experience like last night.
Okay, Jay Stu send me love from the weekend.
Thank you, Doug.
I'll take it from here. The Los Angeles Chargers are going to the playoffs. I couldn't be more thrilled. I know Isaac works on the broadcast. I'm looking at We're very happy around here. I wore my Charger shirt to think me see.
Your lightning bolts touch down saved Diego Go Chargers.
Go. Think about the difference of your mix. A year ago. I was screaming at the team, why did you bring back Brandon Staley? What a gigantic miss in Herbert's final rookie year deal. Jim Harbaugh comes in. I had zero expectations. I've been telling everybody I was willing to punt on this season Iowa. If they had won two games, I would have been fine as long as he was building a culture and bringing his own guys. But he's basically done this with all the guys that Telesco and Staley left us minus Williams. Yeah, exactly, unbelievable story. I couldn't be more happy. Everything's gravy from now on. So I loved it. A Charger clinching the playoffs this weekend.
Same.
Well, I'll start off with this. I love the fact that the halftime of the Music City Bowl between number nineteen Missouri and Iowa, with the Hawkeyes up twenty one to fourteen, is coming right here at Love and Hate. So I won't be so distracted because I'm Hella distracted right now watching this this game. Hella distracted Doug Iowa Actually, you know, scoring some points here, how about that? But you know, I did a lot of flying this week. I went out to Philadelphia, visit family, went back to Iowa.
Did you go to the Ihiladelph.
I went to the Ladelph. That's all right, right? Or is the Ihlidelph? Is that yeah? The Hiladelph Yes, yeah, Philadelphia. I was out there. Wonderful city, charming city fans or another issue, another thing, but love my time.
I thought.
They went back to Iowa, did a lot of flying, saw some friends and family. You know, when you get on a plane, sometimes you don't want to you don't want to talk to the person next to you. But there are so few instances in society now. Everybody has phones. We're always on our headphones and gadgets, and you know, we don't want to talk to the people next to us. But you know, I had a nice conversation with a man named Dennis, Buckeye fan going out to LA from Columbus to watch his Buckeyes taken on Oregon on Year's Day. And you know, sometimes it's really nice just to have a conversation with a complete stranger. We talked sports. I told him what I did with my job, and we talked all about the buck guys, you know, the first match with Oregon and Ohio State. It's it's just so rare nowadays to be able to have that you're such it's such close proximity with people. It's on an airplane, you know, I get it, like I can come in tired with a flight and not want to talk and go right to sleep. But sometimes, you know, I saw him wearing Buckeye stuff, and this guy looked like he played tight end for the Buckeyes back in the day. But we had a nice conversation. It was nice to have a conversation with a random stranger talking some sports. You just don't get that a lot of a lot these days. And so that was my love of the weekend. I had many loves of the weekend, seeing family. You know, you saw Iowa State win eleven games first time ever and ten games first time they've ever done that. But it was connecting with a random stranger on an airplane having some nice sports conversations. That was my love of the weekend.
I love the weekend over. I love the week it was over. We had we had a we had a tough we had a tough one. We had a we had a tough little weekend. In terms of basketball. I will give you some of my love sports wise, and uh, this one's a I think a pretty good one. I just love the Sam Donald story, you know. And it's not because I'm a guy who's been a believer in Sam Donald. I have been, but so many people have been waiting for him to regress to the proverbial mean, and he is not. He is not. And even the most ardent uh Sam Donald hater, if you will, Uh, even those guys are like, man, I don't know. I wouldn't mess with him this year. I wouldn't re sign him for next year. For next year. The point is the Sam Donald story where you know, the Jets move mountains, took him as the third pick in the draft. It doesn't work out. I remember he was seeing ghosts. Then he goes to Carolina, he's three, and oh then that thing falls apart when Christian McCaffrey gets hurt. You know, then he's got to take a backup deal with San Francisco. When he gets in last year, it was just more facilitator than anything. And now he gets a new new lease on life and is just killing it. Sam Darnald's story, I love it.
I saw the like. A popular picture that was shared on social media yesterday was the picture of Baker Mayfield and Sam donold like on the sidelines for the Panthers. Baker Mayfield's performances year was incredible as well. Both those guys just lit it up. Yeah, and then you're thinking, my god, they were in the same quarterback room just recently.
Yes, yes, And you know what happens is you want to bring in your own guys, coaching changes are made, and you know they go after Bryce Young and and you know, look, it looks like Bryce Young main in fact being NFL quarterback after all. But man, they had both those guys. Okay, let's get to what we hated from the weekend. We'll start with our resident hater, Jason Stewart.
Hey, Doug, I made it pretty clear on this show and are in the bonus podcast. I find a reading schedule radio very wazy.
Yeah.
I hate it. Basically when the host just picks up the schedule, that's a win. Do it goes over? Who Who's Mike?
Mike? Mike?
Now?
In the featured game on Fox yesterday, the Vikings played the Packers. I'm gonna I'm gonna repeat that. It's important. The Vikings played the Packers, and Tom Brady wanted to open the broadcast doing schedule radio, and he really couldn't even pull that off. Sam. Do we have the sound of Tom Brady doing schedule radio on the broadcast yesterday.
It's a big road challenge. They've got four losses your Green Bay does. Two of them to the Lions, they're a good team. The Eagles they lost in they're a good teamed and they lost to the uh that's what they lose to the other one. Anyway, they got a big opportunity today to go on the road and really a litmus test for what they're going to face in two weeks.
Can't wait to watch.
So the thing that he got stuck on the Packers and who they've lost to, Well, the team that they lost to are on the field, like right in front of him, the Vikings. So that was a fail. And then later on in the broadcast, Tom Brady had an odd use of the word sacks.
All I've done such a.
Good job in protection today, Sam may have a little sense of comfort that at some point you got to get rid of the ball. He's held onto the ball quite a bit this season, and he's taken a lot of sacks, like almost forty six sacks this season alone.
It sounds like a kid with a trust fund living in a mansion on Long Island.
Yeah, that's sacks. Sacks, Sam, He's taken a lot of sacks, so much, forty six sacks some season alone.
You got want to go to sacks fifth avenues, shot around sacks.
So what this speaks to, though, Doug is a greater problem just him talking about the sacks right there. And this is what I've I've been hard on Tom because he doesn't seem to give much insight in his broadcast. He just listed, uh, the teams on the schedule. That's one thing. But when he talks about how Sam Donald needs to avoid sacks, that's a great opportunity as a former quarterback who did it better than everybody who lived. Why has Dan Sam Donald been taking sacks? And what could he do to not take sacks? Like he could add some insight. Instead he just gives some generic commentary like everybody knows he's been taking a lot of sacks and they're trying to avoid it. Again, a lack of insight with Tom Brady yesterday. And I hate schedule analyst work.
Yeah, but not great. I mean, let's just be honest. Not great sucks, not great, not great. Uh, Okay, Isaac, take a lot of sacks.
I was forty six sacks.
Thank you, Tom. I hated this, but I was also deliriously amused by it at the same time. What I hated was Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets walking onto the field at Buffalo of comody by a staffer with a comically oversized boombox blasting Gangster's Paradise by Coolio, only to summarily and totally not unexpectedly get destroyed by the Bills forty to fourteen. Aaron Rodgers and the Jets owe an apology to the estate of the late Great Coolio.
There is a still picture. Did you see that as they're carrying the boombox out, Josh Allen is like tucked away in the in the hallway. Yes, and Josh Allen's got a look on the space record. These guys serious. These guys were walking into the place to gangster his paradise. Oh man, that was awesome.
Here's the audio that they should have had blasting out of their boom box on their way onto the field against Buffalo.
The Jets have won the toss and elected not to play. Ah very good, hysterical.
Aaron Rodgers didn't want to play at the end of that thing. That was a bad look.
Nobody want to play at the end of that time.
But yeah, he's like, where's my benching. I'll just bench myself.
I'll just be myself. Thank you very much, Sammy. What do you got?
Was anybody else rubbed the wrong way by Miami Hurricane quarterback cam Ward not playing in the second half? Yes, and I get why guys skip Bowl games like they really are. They're exhibition games, but they still count on your record. They're not preseason games where a quarterback starting quarterback might go in and play a series or two. This was a real game and they put up The Hurricanes put up thirty one points in the first half against Iowa State. It was thirty one to twenty eight a halftime. And along the way, cam Ward broke the Division One record for passing touchdowns in a career. He now owns the record over case Keenum, a record that has stood for thirteen years.
Kce can and play for six years things and all serious kse cam plavor six years.
Well.
Cam Ward has played at Incarnate Word, Washington State, Miami and he's he's been great for them. Listen. He got them, you know, a ten win season right on the cusp of the playoff. You know he was a Highest Trophy finalists. But either play the whole game or don't play at all, cause you were right there. You could have had an eleven wins season. Gave I was staate an eleven win season. They were able to come back and win forty two to forty one, but you had thirty one points at halftime, your backup and the rest of the team only put up ten in the second half. You end up losing the game. And I know it's the Pop Tarts Bowl, but please don't go in for a half. Put up highlight reel three touchdowns, and then you know, leave your team to deal with the rest of the game. I know he's gonna be you know, he's gonna be a top ten pick. He's gonna be one of the top quarterbacks taking the NFL draft. I just it rubbed me the wrong way. It was just a bad look, I think, and maybe maybe the coaches should have been like, hey man, just just finish out the game. You know, he has a two million dollar nil valuation there at Miami. He had that he had this year. Things are good for cam Ward, and I know he could get hurt. I know hurt in that second half, Doug, But I just didn't like it.
I get it. I don't love it. I like it better than Christian McCaffrey not playing. Obviously, he only played for the record, but he did play, and then he pulled him into half, and like, if we're honest with ourselves, that's the guy who's gonna make a lot of money playing football in the upcoming NFL draft. And I just I don't think I can fault him. He went, he played, he showed up, he did all the things. That's a lot more than a lot of other guys have done. Now. I know he did it for the for the cake, but he still the less. He did it.
So he uh he jumped off the horse mid stream. I mean, that's the thing. It's I don't care if he sat out, but he wanted he got that record, and then then the second half sat I don't know it.
Just uh yeah, no, I get it, I get it. I'm with you. I'm with you. Yeah.
But you know, it was nice though, to see you know, Shaduur and uh and their Heisman Trophy winner play in that game, you though it was a blowout out to a fellow Big Twelve Conference opponent.
I loved it for BYU. I loved the BYU talked all that mess and then they went and actually delivered. So and I like Travis Hunter and Shor Sanders playing, like, yeah, that could have been part of my love. I actually liked it. I like Dion's message, like you if you have finish this thing. So I'm not I'm not down on either of those guys. I'll tell you what I've hated, and you nen't got a chance to really talk about it a bunch. I kind of hate this narrative about the NBA, Like I, dude, I get it. There's some things that some of those guys have done which you're annoying, but NFL got We have plenty of NFL guys that are annoying, either politically or or in the things that they say and do. Like who are we actually kidding here? Right? Like both you know, when you have stars and they make lots of money, you know, just like actors actresses, not all of them, but some of them are gonna say dumb things. Those games on Christmas Day were great, right, Lakers Warriors was an awesome game. Mavericks versus who they lose to and Maverick's Wolves. That was a great basketball game. You know, Luca gets hurt, Kyrie comes in, He's unbelievable. They lose a close one. The point is that the NBA rings were actually up from previously and the NFL was down. All that's because they went to streaming as opposed to being in traditional and all anybody want to talk about was that nobody's watched the NBA games. Well, actually they got a good number, really good number, you know, got over five rating. So I just hate that people want to take shots at the product when I watched the product, Grant, I'm a basketball coach and a basketball fan form a basketball player. People completely misremember the old, olden days, the old games. Jordan was amazing, Bird was amazing. You couldn't have five NBA games that had the talent, skill and shot making that we saw on Christmas Day. You just couldn't. So I hate that narrative where people want to chase ratings and make a statement about quality of play. Like I really think it just comes down to we've we've NBA games around all the time. There's nothing special about them NFL games. They they're getting closer and closer to being there, but they're still for the most part Thursday, Sunday, Monday, granted last week differently, and that you know, when you limit the supply, the demand continues to increase.
And on that note, Doug, the NFL games that day on Christmas Day were not good. They were terrible duds. They were blowouts, they were not competitive. So I don't think the NBA brass minded that. You know that the NFL product that day was underwhelming.

Stug otlip Show, Fox Sports Radio, Islo. You were talking about the the Eagles and the Is it a conundrum? What would the actual.
I would say conundrum is a very appropriate word to describe it.
Yes, yeah, the conundrum. I okay, So Saquon Barkley can break Eric Dickerson's single season mark. And what's interesting or maybe unique about it? Okay, what's unique about it is that we are actually really lucky to work with with Jason Stewart, who used to work with Eric Dickerson on our sister station here in Los Angeles. Right, And I don't know if you guys saw this as La Times had this. I was reading it this morning. Eric Dickerson said he absolutely doesn't want Saquan to break his record. Do I wanted to break it? Absolutely not. I don't pull any punches on that. I'm not wanting about it. He had seventeen games, do it. Hey, football is football. But the way I look at it, if he's fortunate to get two thousand yards and get the record, it's a great record to have. And then, of course RG three, who I mean survived the purge. He was back with Netflix this last week. Right. RG three said, I wanted Jaden Daniels to break my rookie rushing record because I'm not rooting against the next generation. He earned it. He is the future capitalized. Some of these old heads need to stop drinking all that hater rate and lift up these young guys instead of tearing them down. This is a great discussion, all right, I'm gonna get to what RG three said, get to what Eric Dickerson said. Here's Shady McCoy on FS one today.
You know as a running back. As a running back, we once to occur the next running back. It's all about generation, and I think what's from Eric Diggerson? Now, it's going to Saint Kwon Barkley. For Eric Dickerson, you don't feel the same way outfit there? Now, Eric, can we see Eric for a second now?
Listen.
I know you get hear me, but can you see me?
Okay? Now, you talked about how Saquon Barkley should get a star behind his rocker if he breaks it because they took him extra game. So I did my homework because I love my running back, my old hands and my young boys.
You the old.
Hall a young boy and I've seen it Ojay since and the Jews, who I love his game. He had a record in fourteen games, but you broke it in fifteen games, so you had an extra game of breaking like Saua has actually an extra game of breaking. What point is this?
Man?
Uplift the young dudes because.
Records are meant to be broken. Yeah, well they're definitely broken when he played more games. I mean, let's just be honest. Listen again. The thing I love about Eric Dickerson is he is authentic. You may not. You don't have to like Eric Dickerson. He doesn't actually care. He is always going to be Eric Dickerson. Is that fair, Jase dou.
Yeah, no doubt. He's like one of the most authentic guys I've ever been around, And sometimes like Eric is even guilty of just being like uh too honest. Remember that whole thing on the Jeff Fisher thing and the Rams not welcome to him back in the ar that basically was just all about money. And I have a feeling this is about money too.
I don't think there's any doubt for people who don't know, Like, Okay, remember Eric Dickerson while he was well compensated, Remember he left the Rams because he didn't think he was getting compensated enough by Georgia Frontier, the then owner of the Rams. But he makes his livelihood off of being Eric Dickerson. And one of the things that's great about being Eric Dickerson is he has a single season Russian mark. He signs it, doesn't he when he signs his autograph, does put the numbers down jayse do?
He puts the yardage number in his name, And you would think that every season that's seventeen games that goes by his record is going to be more valuable. I think he'll ask more at trade shows. I think it's a bottom line thing.
Yeah, it's I don't know, it's incredibly interesting to me. Okay. Now, then there's the what do you do if you're the Eagles? Right, He goes, don't need to play sake one. It's a position where nobody takes it easy on you. There's also that element to it. It wasn't Joe Kleco, was it? Who was the Jets defense? Mark Gastineau. Right. Mark Gastineau goes in kind of a costs Brett Farv and says, Brett Favre, you took a dive. You hurt me? And he's like, yeah, will you hurt me? Like no, no, When you you know he took a dive for Michael Strahan for the single season sack record. Mark Gasteau lost a lot of money because he was the single season sack king. You know, so you do understand that from older players perspective, that's just the reality of it. But the other part too, it is like you're at running back, you don't need him. Nobody cares about your regular season record if you don't win anything in the playoffs when you're Philadelphia. I don't think this is a hard call at all, you know, I don't. I wouldn't play him. I wouldn't play him, and I don't think. I don't think Eric Dickerson is hating on the new generation at seventeen games is a fact. It's a fact. In seven he took him another game. I mean, we talked about money ball and the single season touchdown mark that he broke. Barry Sanders, Yeah, he did like three more games, like come on, what are we doing here? So you know, I look at it and I go, I don't think this is a game in which you should even contemplate playing a star running back when you need him for the playoffs, and the only thing that can happen is things that go wrong outside of breaking a record.
Kase two Yeah, I mean Sa Kwon Barkley. What was he known for For the last three or four years, he was known as a guy that just couldn't stay healthy. I mean, there's a reason why the Giants were so apprehensive. You know that viral video of the Giants owner with the GM and their office and everything. There's a reason why there was apprehension of devoting money to him because he couldn't stay healthy for the long term. He's put together an amazing seventeen weeks so for the Eagles, So I play him on in week eighteen for a record that would seem frivolous.
More than a little frivolous. I agree with you more than the irresponsible, irresponsible, not reprehensible, but irresponsible, right, but irresponsible stug Ot Leave show here on Fox Sports Radio. I Loo, what do you think would you play him if you were the Eagle?
No, under no circumstances, And I'd be good with being the bad guy here because they are not going to get the first round by And you know that, even if you're not technically injured, you're still banged up over the course of an eighteen week regular season. So in order to get one hundred and five yards in the regular season finale, that's a fair amount of pounding. Even in a best case scenario when you're not only going to have to play the next week, you might have the NFL schedule you as one of the Saturday games next week, which means you'll be on a short week. No no, no, no, no, no, no, under no circumstances do I play.
Him, Sammy.
You know at first when I kind of wanted him to go for it, but he's got his two thousand yard season, you know, best in Eagles history. Yeah, don't, don't risk injury this team. You know, they get Jalen Hurts back, they have higher aspirations. They can't they can't get the number one seed in the NFC. That's gonna come down to the vikings of the Lions. So rest him. And uh, it's been an amazing year for Saquon, And yeah, don't don't. Don't risk it.
Yeah, what is like again, maybe Saquon Barkley is the perfect example, right if we get right down to brass tacks man, not sewe bark excuse me, Jalen Hurts. Jalen Hurts gets the concussion. If Saquon Barkley plays, gets the concussion, Like, now you didn't play in the playoffs, Now what.
It's a Tanner McKee show.
Yeah, I just don't think. I mean, Plus, the guys had like superhero star type of runs.
This.
I think Sake One's awesome, awesome story is amazing, and I agree with you, Jason, one of the mistakes that a lot of people in my position have made, and I've seen it throughout the landscape of sports media as well. Look at those running backs now, all those GMS look like idiots for what's happened in Green Bay, what's happened in Philadelphia is like, it wasn't that they didn't want to resign their running backs. It wasn't even that they didn't want to resign their running backs to big money for a year, right, It was they didn't want to resign their running backs for three years guaranteed at that same number. Why because they get hurt and usually once they get in around thirty years old, their talent falls off a cliff. So again, I'm not hating on running backs just like Eric Dickerson Isn't Eric Dickerson simply said seventeen game season, I did in the sixteen game season. He's right, and Jay stew is right. The reason for apprehension is that even the sturdiest of human beings, and if you've seen, if you've seen Saquon Barkley, like that's about a solidly built a man as you're going to find. He looks like the after picture to any workout video, especially any leg workout video and he's been hurt. Why would you risk it? No reason? What's the upside? He gets a bonus, he gets his name in the record book. We're playing for a super Bowl here week seventeen. Doesn't matter, doesn't matter at all. Doug Gottlieb Show here on Fox Sports Radio. Doug Gottlieb Show Podcast ILO. What's in the press?
All right, Doug, this is really scary what might have been? And this involves something that you've been very experienced in this year traveling with a college basketball team. The FAA is launching an investigation into a near collision that happened on Friday afternoon at Los Angeles International Airport involving a Delta A three twenty one jet that was taking off for Atlanta at a small charter plane that was carrying the Gonzaga men's basketball team, which was arriving for their game this past Saturday against UCLA. Now Here is the actual audio of the air traffic controller at LAX telling the Gonzaga plane to stop because it was taxing towards the path of the Delta plane taking off. So again, thankfull, Okay, So so here here's what it is. There's there's these people on YouTube and social media who are really into what is called plane spotting. So they hang out next to airports and they video they they they videotape planes landing and taking off, and in recent years people have been live streaming them and they're really really popular among you know, the aviation nerd excuse me, aviation community. And that was the comments there of the guy who was live streaming it with the air traffic control looped in, Oh, you do a very good imitation of it. By the way, that happens, how do you guys travel, By the way.
It's interesting you say that, so we a mixture, but we have because we are one of the four division schools in state of Wisconsin, one of the three in state schools. We have state planes that we can we're charged to use, but they're charters. They're nine seaters. So for example, on January first, so on the first Jaycetu and I were doing the Dan Patrick Show. After the show, we have practice. After practice, then we're flying to Columbus, Ohio. So it's a bit of a slept to get there. So we're actually gonna drive to Milwaukee, which is an hour and forty and then fly to Columbus through Saint Louis on Southwest. But after the second game, which is the rights you write, State's first game Secon game is Northern Kentucky, which is in Cincinnati or just outside Cincinnati. Wheel charter back on these nine seaters. They're pro turboprops and and you know, probably take us about our forty five straight to get back. So we get great travel when we use those. But you know, like their little planes and the three planes. I was part of Oklahoma State, you know the year after I finished they yeah, right, that was in two thousand and one, so I'm very well aware of and of course it was a bad week with with plane crashes. Right, there's the Azerbaijan eire, there's one terrible one I think in South Korea. Yes, several of them. So yeah, very thankful nothing happened to the Zags upon approach to it to la.
In the NBA, Sacramento kingstar Daron Fox today denied acclaim by former NBA player Lou Williams that pushback from Fox played a part in the recent firing of King's head coach Mike Brown. Fox tweeted, and I quote, there was never any pushback about anything. This narrative of us butting heads or me going to management saying anything is bull bleep. So you can run with that if you want to unquote.
Bull bleep, bull bleep. I never heard of bull bleep. Have you ever heard of bull bleep?
I did censor one.
