Readin' Writin' and Reason | Charter Schools

View descriptionShare

Dom Giordano, WPHT host and former teacher, has dedicated much of his daily show toward parents who are taking it into their own hands to push back against school boards that have a negative impact on their children. This has culminated in a weekly podcast on education, Readin', Writin', and Reason, which has allowed wonderful relationships to develop between Giordano, educators, and parents throughout the country who are speaking out against overbearing school boards.

First, Dom welcomes in Jeff Yass, a Pennsylvanian options trader and billionaire that the Inquirer regularly likes to paint negatively as ‘the richest man in Pennsylvania.’ Yass, a strong proponent for charter schools and school choice, was the target of an episode of ABC’s Abbott Elementary, with the fictional school facing a takeover by an ‘evil’ charter school organization. First, Yass tells whether he was watching the show live, with Yass telling how he found out about the reference toward his work. Then, Giordano asks Yass to explain why, as a successful businessman, he’s involved himself in such a political topic, with Yass telling of the importance of allowing children throughout the country, and their parents, to determine their future by offering choices in education. Also, Yass offers his opinion on the mayoral race here in Philadelphia, pointing to the hypocrisies in the anti-charter platforms of certain candidates.

Then, Dom welcomes Central Bucks School District President Dana Hunter back onto the podcast to discuss a story posted recently on Broad+Liberty that examines the media coverage of her school district, determining that many times, reporters state that the board is ‘anti-LGBT’ while frequently ignoring the district’s perspective. Hunter takes us inside the target of these reports, being the district’s new policy on books displaying sexual imagery, explaining why this is not anti-LGBT nor are they outright banning books, telling why she hopes the policy does indeed produce inclusivity.
