Movement: The Festival, The Future & The Legacy (2000–Present)

In the 1990s, the music went to war—and it was carved directly into vinyl.

Episode 5 chronicles the rise of Underground Resistance (UR). Led by "Mad" Mike Banks and Jeff Mills, this collective donned masks to declare independence from the corporate music industry.

But behind the masks, there was Ron Murphy of National Sound Corporation (NSC). We tell the story of the legendary mastering engineer who helped invent the "Locked Groove" and gave Detroit Techno its notoriously loud, heavy sound.

From the sonic warfare of UR to the mastering lathe at NSC, this is the story of how Detroit built its own industry from the ground up.

High Tech Jazz: Underground Resistance, Ron Murphy & The NSC Cut (1990–1999)

In the mid-80s, three teenagers from the suburbs found some discarded drum machines in a pawn shop. They didn't have a manual, so they invented their own rules.

Episode 4 tells the story of The Belleville Three: Juan Atkins, Derrick May, and Kevin Saunderson. We explore how they took the funk of Parliament and the robotics of Kraftwerk to create "High Tech Soul."

From the icy landscapes of Cybotron to theeuphoric piano chords of "Strings of Life," this is the story of how Detroit gave the world Techno.
