Dan reacts to last night's matchup between the Bengals and the Cowboys. Will Joe Burrow be able to win a Super Bowl in Cincinnati? Will the transfer portal and NIL dissuade NFL coaches from transitioning to the college game? And Rob Gronkowski details the team he grew up wishing he could play for and whether or not he thinks Bill Belichick would succeed at UNC.
You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox Sports Radio.
You got the Bengals beating the Cowboys twenty seven to twenty. You're saying, there's a chance the Cowboys are five and eight, Cincinnati is five and eight. One team feels a whole lot better at five and eight than the other team feels at five and eight. And with the Cowboys, you're looking at a team that was just never ready to compete. Even if Dak Prescott's there, they still had a lot of holes. And I think that was the big concern. You're all in, but you weren't all in, and it showed. Troy Aikman last night said he thinks Mike McCarthy's going to be coming back. Michaeh Parson says, hey, I hope we can all run this back. I hope Mike McCarthy is coming back. And with Jerry Jones, he is loyal. He's been loyal to a fault, so maybe he is going to bring Mike McCarthy back, which seems pretty bizarre after what is transpired here and he left him out there as a lame duck coach. But Cincinnati wins this one, and if you look at their schedule their remaining schedule. They got a shot here. I got a shot, and I don't know if it's a legitimate shot to make the playoffs, but you got to win out and this is the AFC where you got a chance. You're at the Titans, then you have the Browns at home, the Broncos at home, and then you're at the Steelers. I don't know what the Steelers will be playing for, but there is that Cincinnati Pittsburgh rivalry. The Broncos are playoff team, You're going to host them. The Browns enigmatic, and you got the Titans as well. But right now at five and eight, and you watched last night, and maybe you watch the same way I did. It's like, why aren't they better? Burrow has been great this year, Jarge Chase is unbelievable. The defense has been terrible. That's the biggest difference here. And now they did hold Dallas to twenty, but they needed help in the final two minutes there with the block punt, the fumble, and then you let Joe Burrow little out pattern to Jamar Chase. Like, for the life of me, I'm thinking, do you have coverage over the top, like you have to have one guy on Jamar Chase and you have to have another guy right there for a helping hand. And give credit to Jamar Chase. It's a simple pass round. Just out doop, dip, zip doop, touchdown and then that's it. Ballgame eight seven seven three DP show email address DP at dan Patrick dot com, Twitter handle at DP show. Here's Mike McCarthy after the loss last night.
Would you say that this is maybe the toughest pill to swallow as far as a non playoff loss.
Human experience as a coast.
Definitely, because I mean, puts us in the season, you know, you understand it. We dug ourselves a whole, and it was the seven losses coming in here, so we had we had to have us one tonight, you know, And yeah, definitely, this is a very very disappointing loss.
We talked about this and Shiptember where I said, you're going to have a loss by a team that when we get to December, we're going to look back and go, oh my god. The Bengals open the season losing at home to Jacoby Brissette and the Patriots, and we said at the time that's the kind of thing that can keep you from home field advantage from winning your division to making the playoffs. And that might be the case for the Bengals. Teams that lose in September, it still costs, you know, it still counts as one loss, but it's costly at the end of the year when you have these losses early and you go, oh my god, they lost to them.
Uh.
Seton what's poll question today?
For the first hour, Well, we got a couple here, one here from paula quarterback least likely to win a Super Bowl?
Whohoa least Like? Where did where did that come from?
Okay, two years ago, I would have said that Joe Burrow is going to win a Super Bowl. I would have bet my career on it, bet anything on it. The Bengals look good, he looked great. They almost beat the Rams a couple of plays away, like they're going getting further from the Super Bowl, Joe Burrow and the Bengals. And then I threw in some other quarterbacks.
Okay, they had Lamar Jackson. I don't know if that feels closer. Well, they're closer than Joe Burrow and the Bengals are.
Correct, But are they closer than two years ago?
I just think they've had a rough patch. I think that team can win on the road. I think that if that game plan is carried out, then yeah, I still think that they can go to a super Bowl.
I do.
Go to a super Bowl, go to Can they win the Super Bowl? I'll say yes because John Harbaugh has won a super Bowl before, so I'll say yes. But they don't have a good defense either. Who else is on there? Uh? Well, brock Purdy? He felt really close last year? Well he was. You can't get any closer than being in the Super Bowl.
Does it feel well, I'm saying, does it feel much farther this year?
And they always talk about windows with the forty nine ers?
Oh, I think the window closed this year. I don't know if it's closed for brock Purty, but yeah, I mean he's like Joe Burrow. He had a chance, had a chance. Maybe that's the last chance he has. Yes, Seaton Justin Herbert. I I don't know if he's farther further away from a Super Bowl. I just don't know if he's closer maybe because of Jim Harball. Yeah, all right, who else is on the list? Then we can go back and say, right, who's the furthest away all right. Last on the list then would be Jalen Hurts. So you have Joe Burrow, Lamar Jackson, Brock Purty, Justin Herbert, Jalen Hurts. Joe Burrow is least likely to win a Super Bowl. Yeah, that's crazy. Well, I have to look at his team. Jalen Hurts on a really good team. Lamar Jackson is on a team that can be dangerous. Justin Herbert is going to make the playoffs with Jim Harbaugh in his first year there. Rock Purty with the injuries, they seem to be non threatening right now. But I would say Joe Burrow, he's not even going to make the playoffs. Yes, se Jalen Hurts fairly or unfairly. I'm not saying this is the way that I feel. But Jalen Hurts is the only quarterback on that list who is still a question mark for being a start, starting quarterback. Yes, and I've done the questioning. There are times when I go, I just don't know if he's a good quarterback or quarterback in a really good situation. Maybe Brock Purdy maybe yes, But I think Rock Purdy when he plays really, really well, is better than Jalen Hurts. When Jalen Hurts plays really really well, really well, Jalen Hurts gives you the element of running. I mean, Rock Purty does run, but pretty when everybody's playing. That's when he plays really really well. Jalen Hurts. They can some like I watched the game against Carolina. He just kind of does some things and I just don't I don't know if he's a you know, going to be a really good passer. I think now I go back to that Super Bowl and you could have given him the MVP and a loss. I wouldn't had a problem with it. He was that good. I just I don't know, there's something that I don't see the consistency. I don't see him being that Oh my gosh, Jalen Hurts. Is he doing what he's supposed to do. I guess, you know, win they're not throwing the ball. I mean, that's a run first team. So I don't know what that They got. Receivers they got, they got a couple of really good receivers, you got a really good tight end, and it feels like they're a running game, running team. So that that's a little bit surprising there. Yeah, Pauling.
It feels like the Eagles could win a Super Bowl with Hurts playing B level football. They almost did it already, you know, twenty two touchdowns and ten picks type guy.
You know, I don't.
I'm not comparing it to Troy Apen, but the focus on the quarterback is similar to the Troy Aikman days where he doesn't have to do a ton. It's got so much talent.
But I think we always felt that Troy Aikman could step up in a big moment and then provide that play. I don't know about Jalen Hurts when it comes to passing, playmaking, it's different. Like I look at Lamar as a better passer, I look at Lamar as a better quarterback, more dangerous. But it just feels like Jalen Hurts sometimes has to keep up with everybody else on the offense there. And I don't know if it's you know, Nick Sirianni, I don't know if it's play calling, whatever it is. And then you got a receiver who's saying I'm always open and you're not throwing me the ball. And then all of a sudden you're like, wait, you're winning, You're winning it's in about but Jalen Hurts can win a Super Bowl. I mean that's a really good team, really good team and maybe the most balanced team that I've seen this year, and that's because Detroit lost some players due to injury. By the way, I have the matchups here according to DraftKings. These are the Super Bowl exact results. Lions over the Chiefs, Chiefs over the Lions, Lions over the Bills, Bills over the Lions, Lions to beat the Ravens. So the Lions are prohibitive favorites to go to the Super Bowl with this with DraftKings, so the Lions to beat the Chiefs is slightly more of a favorite than the Chiefs to beat the Lions. And then it's Lions beating the Bills, Bills beating the Lions. Those are tied at plus fifteen hundred, and then you have the Lions over the Ravens at plus sixteen hundred, the Lions to beat the Chiefs plus twelve hundred, Chiefs to beat the Lions plus fourteen hundred. That's interesting with what they is how Vegas sees this that the Lions feel like they are the team in the NFC, and you got that game against Buffalo coming up, and which might say a lot about both of these teams, because Buffalo, what happened in Los Angeles and now you're going to go against the Lions here. Also, I have the odds to be the number one overall pick in the NFL Draft. I'll have that for you coming up. Also, I filled out my Heisman ballot yesterday late afternoon. Paulie always helps me. He takes care of the actual sending it in because there are times when I go, I don't know if I'm filling this out correctly. It's confusing, Yes, but I did wait. I did want to wait until all the games are played to be fair to all the candidates. And I'm not allowed to reveal who I voted for. They ask us, they remind us not to reveal, and I will say I probably had one surprise on my ballot. It's one, two and three is how you vote. But after the Heisman ceremony that I can tell you who I voted for and why, All right, eight seven seven to three DP show email address DP at Danpatrick dot com, Twitter handle it DP show. By the way, the over under for first round road wins coming up this week we have to pick the one game. There's going to be one road team, at least one road team to win this weekend. I feel that way. This is for the college football playoffs. One the over under is one and a half road wins this weekend. Could you see two teams win on the road. Also, I heard from somebody, a college football source who is well, extremely plugged in, who said, you know, when I said, hey, whatever happens first round, can you recede those teams? So let's say Clemson wins, Oregon wins, Oregon would then play Clemson because they're twelfth in Oregon's won if that, you know, that's how it played out. Clemson won. So the challenge of receding, according to my source after the first set of games, is the logistics of fan base with flights and hotels scrambling in a short period of time. Keeping in mind that that's a lot of people to accommodate. And these are bowl games, which week long events with their respective location. So for a lot of reasons, receding is too complicated. That's why they won't be able to do that because and he's right that we want to see that recede them now I think there's another way around this. I think there's a better way to be ranking these teams that if you win, you're in the playoffs, but that doesn't mean you get a first round by when you're in, that's when Vegas will have the odds. Because Vegas doesn't have any emotion attached to this, We're going to tell you that the team that has the best chance to win the national title all the way down to the team with the worst odds. That's the way I think it should be done. And I think next year or the year after that, when they expand to fourteen, that's probably what they're going to do. So if you're looking for receding, it's once the result happens this weekend, then you're going to tell somebody, Hey, you want to get on a flight, You got to get hotel accommodations, and you're going to go in and then all of a sudden, you're going to have a Bowl game atmosphere as opposed to playing a home game.
Yes, polling, you know, based off that there's some college towns that can host a lot of people, and there's some that I don't know how they do it, like Texas Austin, full service town, big town city, Ohio state Columbus. I've been there with you. It's bigger than I expected. But Happy Valley in South Bend? How does South Bend get an influx of people come there? Do they stay in Chicago?
Do they?
I can't imagine how many people they could host in that city.
Well, you're only hosting one game, but you're giving them ample time to find accommodation there. That's really the key. And then a lot of people do stay in Chicago and then you know whatever, an hour and a half to South Bend. But you got Indiana fans in South Bend, that'll be you know, interesting trek for them as well. Like could Boise, you know handle a couple of different you know, fan bases there. So I think that that's interesting too. But receding is not gonna happen just because of the logistics.

Last night, this was the play that turned the game around with the Bengals and the Cowboys. All right, here's the punt by Ryan Raco.
Got it is blocked.
The Bengals are gonna have the bond.
No, you can't touch it. Want to fuck me on the line of scrimmage and the Bengals you're gonna have it at the forty five. All you have to do is let it roll, don't touch it, and you'll get that ball. Then all of a sudden you put a hand on it. Now it's a live ball. Bengals recover and then it was a touchdown pass from Joe Burrow to Jamar Chase and just like that, that was a tough loss. Here's Jerry jon the Cowboys owner.
If you had told me that going into the end of that fourth quarter they poll they had.
Just twenty points.
I would have taken that with a smile and said, quitting hold them to twenty. That gives us our best chance, and we did that.
So I thought our defense played really well tonight own balance played well enough to win, and obviously our offense played well enough to win.
We just there's three phases. We've got a special team space and that cost us. The Cowboys are won and six at home on pace for their worst home record since twenty fifteen, when they were one in seven. Their point differential is almost seventeen points per home game. They're were since their first year of existence in nineteen sixty. Stat of the Day, Stat of the Day, that past stat of the day. Stat of the day, here comes that what stat of the Day Brought to you by Panini America, the official trading cards of the Dan Patrick Show. I was wondering when was the last time we had three teams with at least eleven wins in the NFC at this juncture in the season. So the Lions are twelve and one, Eagles are eleven and two, Vikings eleven and two. The last time the NFC had three teams with at least eleven wins through the first thirteen games of a season was nineteen eighty six. Giants, Redskins, and the Bears were all eleven and two. All right, phone calls are welcome. We'll get to those. Pull question for our one and then what are we going to go with our two?
Seaton Well, we got up there right now, receiver, I would start my team with right now. Your options are justin Jefferson, Jamar Chase, Brock Bowers, and Cede Lamb. Jamar Chase is leading that with about forty five percent of the vote, followed by Justin Jefferson two point seven percent.
Of the vote.
Ceed Lamb, Okay, that seems crazy to me. Ceed Lamb's a star. Is just a star, Jamar Chase recency bias. I'm going to guess because he was awesome last night. He's having a great season two. Justin Jefferson makes it look easy, and so does Brock Bauers. But you have to go out of your way to watch the Raiders. You have to find them, and then when you find them, then you realize Rock Bauers is a difference maker. He's lived up to the hype because when he was at Georgia and even Lad McConkie, I mean, is he gonna end up with one thousand yards receiving? And who would have thought? He was kind of lost in the shuffle there with Georgia, which happens because of all the talent there. But with the Chargers, he's been their go to guy. He's been really unbelievable. Rob Gernkowski will join us in an hour from now get his thoughts on Rock Bowers and uh, can he be Rookie of the Year. Has Jaden Daniels build up enough house cred that brock Bowers can't be the Rookie of the Year, because if I'm gonna he's gonna probably set the record for rookie receptions. Phukin Nakua had that and what is it, one o five, So he's on pace for around you know, one O seven, one o eight, maybe one thousand yards receiving for a terrible team. Jayden Daniels, if he gets his team in the playoffs, then he's he deserves Rookie of the Year because that's a big deal, especially at that position. What are the odds? How much of a favorite is Jaden Daniels pauling quite a bit.
He's a minus two sixty five heavy favorite. Boon Nix is right behind Brock Bauers is third as of today. Caleb Williams and a few other guys are in the mix.
Yeah, Caleb Williams doesn't deserve to be in the mix. Bo Nix has done well. Rock Bowers has been really good. Not going to win it, but he's going to make a late run here, maybe make it a little uncomfortable here for the voters.
Yes, Marvin, is it going to be weird when brock Bauers is first team All Pro but doesn't win Offensive Rookie of the Year in the NFL.
Wow, how many tight ends have been first team All Pro their rookie year? I mean wow? And that is a Now that's a specialized position, you know, tight end. It's just you're a glorified wide receiver, you know, playing tight end and the attention that we put on that position here in the last ten years or so. But for him to be first team All Pro at tight end, yeah, PAULI.
I have Sam Laporta as second team All Pro last year. I'm double checking, but I have him as. I've got some argument and back from Alliance fan, but I have a second team All Pro last word checking?
Okay, Well, Picture day Ray is a Lions fan, so he's probably, you know, trying to plead his case that Sam Laporta deserved to be first team All Yea. I think that's what's going on with checking. Of course, of course, no college football playoff games coming up this weekend because they give the weekend to Army and Navy. Then after that it'll start on Friday, December twentieth, Indiana at Notre Dame. And I mentioned this first hour if you're just joining us, The over under first round road wins for the college football Playoffs is one and a half. That I was surprised. I thought it might have been a half that you know, is it going to be one team is going to win on the road. Nobody's gonna win on It feels like at least one team is gonna win a road game, and everybody on the road is at least a touchdown underdog here Indiana seven and a half, Tennessee seven and a half, Clemson's like a twelve point underdog the Texas, I think. So there's some there's some point spreads here that are a little larger than I'm sure the College Football Committee would like.
Yes see, it's kind of the more that I look at this, like the bracket, it's going to be incredibly difficult for a first round team to win the whole thing.
Yes, Yeah, that is a that's a tall task. Yeah, you're gonna have to win a cop and you're gonna win on the road, and then you're gonna win on the road. And how many you have to have four wins if you're a team that's playing this next weekend?
Yeh see, I wonder if there's even a single team in college football that's played any way you chop this up, has played that tough of a four game stretch in the entire season. I bet that they haven't four games back to back like that against teams like this.
I bet nobody's done that. They should at least throw mercer in there for one weekend for one of these teams. You know, Yeah, usually there's a right Gratsburgh State in there. Yeah, Shawn, and Oregon leads us off second hour? Hi, Sean, what's on your mind today?
Hey?
Dan?
I wanted to touch on this Bill Belichick n see. I mean, I think that's a terrible idea. I mean, everyone knows that college football is about recruiting, and could you imagine Bill Belichick in there trying to recruit people he can't even relate to. I mean, we're talking. This guy is gonna be problems. I Mean, the next first thing I do is put stipulations on him, saying you can't date the college girls.
Bill.
I'd tell him that straight away. And I just don't think that's gonna work out. I think it's gonna be a comedy show. I mean, the NFL teams they see they don't want to bring him in. Now, no good football teams want to bring him in.
I think he's going to be able to grab their attention because they know he can get them to the pros. I mean, that's what it comes down to. These kids are going to college, they want to get paid, they want to play, and they want to get to the pros. If you're going and Bill Belichick is your coach, I think he'll be a magnet. This isn't relatability. He has other coaches who can relate to the players, your offensive coordinator, your defensive coordinator, your quarterbacks coach, your receivers coach. He is the CEO. He's going to run a company. Nick Saban seem to relate and they're the same age. So I don't buy into that. You learn, you adapt, and Belichick has always done that until the latter part of his career in New England, where I think it became a very tense filled atmosphere with him and Robert Kraft. But this is Bill maybe saying I got three years here and I turned it over to my son, and I think that these kids going in there are going to go. Can he get me to the NFL because that's what they want.
Yeah, Marvin, Yeah, can you imagine Belichick going in there. Hey, I know you're a three star recruit. Nobody looks at you. But I drafted a guy in the sixth round he turned out all right. Or Malcolm Butler, he was from Wes Alabama, who heard of him and then I turned him into something. He has a history of doing this with like lesser known talent and turning him into something. So why can't he do that with Carolina. I mean, this seems perfect for.
Him as long as he has the NIL money. And once again with what's happening in college football is these coaches know I don't want to deal with NIL. I don't want to deal with transfer portal. That's why you have schools who are hiring general managers. That's what they're going to do. Andrew Luck is a GM of Stanford football. He's going to be handling these things. The coach is going to coach. Now, he might say I like that guy. I like that guy more than that guy. Hey, we're gonna need your bill to close this guy. His mom wants to meet you. He might be doing things like that, but I think this is a great situation. It's Carolina, North Carolina. I don't know if there's a downside to it, not right now. If he's interested in North Carolina and he's had two interviews, you imagine the person who's interviewing. All right, prior experience. I brought my rings here. I'm the greatest coach of all time. Okay, all right, let me see the resume here. Do you have any recommendations?
Yeah?
Hold on, yeah, Tom, could you talk to Hey, it's Tom Brady. I just want to say the Bill's great. Thank you, Tom. Oh, who's on the phone. Hey, it's Nick Saban. Hey, coach. So you vowed for Bill Belichick. Yeah, he's really good. Yeah, he's the greatest ever. Okay, all right, you got some decent resumes here. He got some you know, good people here sticking up for Robert Kraft does not want to hear references. Yes, Todd, that was the pros bill.
This is a college. Here's a whole other world your journey with.
Do you have the tight end information there, Pauline?
Yeah, tight ends rookie tight ends that made first team All Pro I can find two in the past forty years, forty past forty one of them eight late eighties, early nineties, the other early two thousands. Superstars in college, both of them.
Pretty tough. Yes, ma'r.
Kellen Winslow to second, No, that was going to be my guest.
Good guess you're on the right track with Kellen Winslow the.
Second Kellen Winslow.
Now what Marvin Jeremy Shockey.
Jeremy Shocky's cracked? Whoa you? Okay, I got it.
Okay, there's a guy felt like he was on his way to the Hall of Fame. Four Pro Bowls in five years, All Pro as the first team as a rookie, not in the Hall of Fame, and the other one is eighties nineties.
Here's the hint, Mark Bavaro. No, oh god, Wow, that's a great guess.
This guy was an All American in college with the Keith Jackson Jackson's cracked.
He was lightly used at Oklahoma, but.
He was first team All Pro his first three years with the Eagles, and somehow it did not make the Hall of Fame.
Wow, what a killer. Well, it's a lot of guys who get shot out of a cannon and then all of a sudden, how long do you stay in the air? Odell Beckham Junior, the third is not going to the Hall of Fame. He's not. Neither was Ben Coates or Ben Watson was that was he played forever. He might still be playing. It felt like he was around for twenty years.
There's a bunch of great college Titans.
Jermaine Grisham I thought was going to change the game he was out of Oklahoma.
Yeah, it never really did. He went to the Bengals, he did. Who was Who is the guy with the Saints? Jimmy Graham. I thought Jimmy Graham was going to change the position. I did Vernon Davis. Vernon Davis was great too, But I thought Jimmy Graham is like guys that big basketball player, just throw it up. You're going to dominate. It's just I don't care how big you are, Like you get tired of getting hit. Yeah, he was a big target and he got pounded. Yes, Mark, he.
Wanted to get paid as a wide receiver.

Youn LV will face Cow at the Art of Sport LA Bowl hosted by Gronk. It's Sofi. That'll be Wednesday, December eighteenth, at nine Eastern the four times Super Bowl champ joining us on the program. Who calls you Rob?
Hey?
Dan?
How you doing? I bout Danny, Dan, Danielle. I don't know what your name is either. We got all different types of names.
I don't have a nickname. But who calls you Rob?
So like, my close friends call me Rob, My family members call me Rob like, and that's basically all. I'm basically known as Gronk to a lot of my teammates, a lot of my team teammates, depending on how they referred to me as like if Julian's referring to me as like the football player, he calls me Gronk, and but like if we're hanging out and we're just chilling and it's just awesome, it's more personal, he calls me Rob, you know. But yeah, that's that goes with a lot of teammates as well. So basically my family, personal situations with teammates and my close friends growing up, you know, basically my friends from Buffalo they call me Rob. Other than that, it's Gronk and I love it, man, I love the name Gronk. And here's a little story too with it, is that my other brother Dan, he's my He's the second oldest brother in my family. He was nicknamed Gronk his whole entire life, all the way up until he got into the NFL, and then I took it over because I'm a big shot like that.
Did you want to play for Buffalo when you were growing up?
When I was growing up as a kid, I one did want to play for Buffalo. That was the team. I mean, I was a Buffalo Bills fan. I love Eric Molds, Takio Spikes. That era right there was the era where I was really into it. We were really passionate fans like you see now with Bill's Mafia, because we were just so busy with with my with everything going on with my family. How I had four brothers, so we didn't really get to get to too many games. But we were Buffalo Bill's fans just overall as a whole, and definitely always dreamed of playing for them. But I think it worked out more the better when they passed on me twice. And I always used it as motivation as well. Like I pretend like it, I'm you know, I was really pissed that they didn't take me, But deep down I kind of knew that when I got drafted to the New England Patriots that it was a way better situation. At the time, the moment when I really wanted to play for the Buffalo Bills, I would say, if I had a chance to, would have been the last four years, you know, of the last four years. So when I was in Tampa, Buffalo Bills they were legit. And then after I was done in Tampa as well, over the last three years, you know, I had a couple thoughts, Hey, how cool would that be to play for the Bills. I actually talked to them at one point before I went, you know, back to Tampa Bay for my second years, just because you know, they have a solid team. Josh Allen. Just how cool would that be to play one year? Getting drafted there when I'd been cool because I got drafted to an unbelievable situation, but the play a year with Josh Allen would have been really cool, but unfortunately it just didn't happen.
Okay, explain the situation where Joe Burrow is trying to recruit you to Cincinnati and did you did you know that that was Joe Burrow actually trying to recruit you?
All right? All right, so that story kind of went big recently. So here here's what happened. I got duped like five years ago, actually when not five years ago, however long it was when Malcolm Brown got drafted first round to the New England Patriots. He texted me and then I texted him back, and then it was a fake number, and that's what I talked about. And then I told myself, Hey, I'll never respond to fake numbers anymore, or random numbers that I don't know, because I was getting a lot of them. So then after my second year playing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, I've got to ask plenty of questions, like when you're doing media stuff, you know, you go to media row all that wherever. It was, Hey, what young quarterback would you love to play for? If you could play, if you could play with And I was like, Joe Burrow, he reminds me of Tom Brady. I watched him in the National Championship Game at LSU, and just the way that he stays in the pocket, the way he goes through all his reachs, just the way that he presents and carries himself. I really think that would be cool to play with him. That's my young buck quarterback that I feel like I would drive. But it blew up everywhere, Like I wanted to go to the Cincinnati Bengals, and this was right after I retired from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. So then we fast forward at the White Party and we talked about this on my podcast Dudes on Dudes, but we're going to recap it right now my new podcast that I host with Julia, So check us out for plenty of stories as well. But uh, we go back. We're at the White Party and there's Joe Burrow. I never met him in my life, and we just chat real quick. He's like yo, because he texted me right after I said all that about him in Cincinnati. I wanted to play him, and that's when I didn't text him back because I didn't believe it. I didn't want to get duped together. So I see him at the White Party. We're hanging out talking. He's like, yo, gronk, I texted you Burrow just along those lines, and I was, and my my eye shot up. I kind of got embarrassed because, like I want to text him back if I knew one hundred percent, because I'm a big fan, I really am. And I was like, no, way, bro, that was you. He's like, yeah, man, you ghosted me. Just it was just along those lines, and like I kind of felt bad because like I wanted to respond to Joe Burrow. I mean, he cool dude. And I just told him. I was like, hey, it's probably that'd be a good thing I didn't and He's like, yo, man, I could have used you. And I was like, no, when I'm retired, trust me, you don't want me out there on the field. You would. It would have only brought your play down, buddy. So that's how it went out, man, And uh, he's cool, be cool dude, And that's all.
We're talking to Gronk. How often, like I gotta believe your personality with Bill Belichick would there are times when he like would scold you at being a goofball.
Uh. I would say, my uh, just a few times. Because here's the thing. If you show up and you ball out and you perform, and you're consistent with balling out and performing, Coach Belichick is gonna let you do whatever you want to do, you know, as long as you ain't getting in trouble and all that. Like, if you're having fun but you're balling out, he lets you do what you do. But if you're if you're doing all that other nonsense, tweeting NonStop, being causing controversy, uh, controversy and not bawling and have all this extra activity going on, yeah he's going to get on your case. So it was a good thing that he was barely on my case because I was bawling, Dan, I was balling my second year in the league, I was balling my rookie year in a way my third year, all that good stuff. But every once in a while he would get on my case and it was just funny though. He would get the whole team laughing that he's yelling at me about something that I did. Stupid, but it was straightened me up and it button me up to you know, he was just letting me know, hey, you better clean up the gap before it gets out of control. Just along those lines, but nothing too serious.
Can you see him coaching a college team? Could you see him coaching at North Carolina?
I mean, I can tell you, this coach Belichick is the best coach, hands down in the game of football. He has more knowledge than anyone I've ever talked to, and just more knowledge of the game, just inside and out. He knows everything, the playbook, rule book, you name it. This guy special teams, offense, defense, This guy knows it all and he would be a great coach at the University of North Carolina. My only question is how would he do because when you're a head coach in college, it's kind of like not really being a head coach. It's not about all football. From my understanding and meeting head coaches in college and seeing what they do, it's more about managing the program and also managing these kids and recruiting them. I can't see coach Blichick, you know, being all in in that situation, coaching wise one on the field, getting these players ready for the NFL. That's what he would do. But hey, when it comes to recruiting, I think that's the question mark, and that's really up to him if he if he can see himself doing that. With me personally, I can see him getting tired and old with all that transfer portal anil stuff going on.
What if he said, would you be my tight ends coach?
Oh? Man, I'm not into the coaching in the world, Dan. You know, I really love what I'm doing analysts with on the pregame kickoff show that's going so well. Coaching is just not in my forte You know, I love the game of football, but you know that's just not me. I can see myself coaching though, like if I have a kid one day, like like my brothers have kids, I go to their game, just give them a tip or so and watch them do it. Like I can see myself doing like Little League and stuff like that, But not no coach in college or NFL.
The bowl game, second consecutive year, you're hosting this bowl game, the Art of Sport LA Bowl hosted by Gronkit so far Wednesday, December eighteenth, at nine eastern. How did you get involved? Like? What is your goal with this bowl game?
Uh? You know, it's just to expand you know, my family name, that's for sure. You know, keep it in the in the helm of the football world, which one percent it's doing. And uh, you know, just go out there and motivate kids as well, you know, keep the name on a positive track and just to stay in the football is really cool because I actually played in this Bowl game as well as the first ball game that Arizona went to in ten years when I was at the University of Arizona and it was actually called the Vegas Ball at the time, but it was the same as that conference matchup as it is now. And then it got moved to the La Bowl in Los Angeles in twenty twenty. So it's just a cool atmosphere, you know. My goal is to bring energy to the crowd, to bring energy to the teams, all that good stuff. Like last year, I sang the national anthem, I did a couple other antics. It wasn't that great, but at least I had, you know, a chorus with me. I had four others as well with me, so it made me sound decent, you know, it made me so sound all right. I also rased the Boise State mascot last year, which it was a dog, and I beat the dog and the dog only lost one of a good time, you know, in its life. So just doing that type of cool things, bringing the gronk effect to the game, and that's what it's all about. Just cracking it up and having my friends former teammates, former college teammates. They're my family. So it's just a good experience and great atmosphere.
You getting married soon?

Yes, you know we are. I'm with my I've been with my girl for quite some time now. She's wonderful, she's the best. We totally understand each other's schedules. Uh, you know, when I'm on the road, she's on the road. Sometimes she goes with me. Sometimes we bring the dog, sometimes she stays back. We have it down to science, that's for sure. We basically already are. I mean we act like we are, but uh, you know, we're gonna might have to move into the future step coming up soon.
Man, Okay, all right, just saying around the holidays that sometimes get a little pressure.
