Dan tries to understand what it means to “have a bag” in the NBA and determine which players do or do not have one. And college football analyst Joel Klatt talks #5 Indiana and the current College Football Playoff rankings.
You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox Sports Radio.
It's the final hour on this Thursday. We'll talk some football. Joel Klatt on loan from Fox. He's got the game coming up with gust It'll be Ohio State against Indiana and a big game in Columbus. So that'll be about twenty minutes from now. Whether could play a role Tonight Thursday Night Football, the Brown's hosting the Pittsburgh Steelers. I've got Pittsburgh still favored by three and a half. The over under for entertainment purposes only is thirty seven odds to score a touchdown on Thursday Night Football. If you said Najee Harris, you would be correct. The best odds. Then it's Nick Chubb and Nick Chubb. Of course, this isn't the redemption game. I don't even know what you would label this. Because Nick Chubb blew out his knee, I believe against Pittsburgh. Now he gets an opportunity to play the Steelers coming up tonight. Good morning. A little later on, we'll write tomorrow's headline today with a heads up to everybody. So that's a seat and this is directed at you. This is a fifty minute headline, our heads up for the headlines for tomorrow.
I felt that energy I did. I felt it okay, coming right towards me. This is the head was.
Directed right at you, because it's always seatings like oh gosh. So we'll write tomorrow's headline today with the Thursday night game. Email ADDRESSDP at Danpatrick dot com, Twitter handle at DP show. Congrats to gino Oriema he set the collegiate victory record at one two hundred and seventeen, a big win last night. Had this to say after the achievement.
I know it means a lot to a lot of people, A lot of people here at that YU kind that worked really really hard to make it, to make it possible. You know, you saw all the players here. Means a lot to them. And I'm sure you know, when this season's over, I'll be able to look back on it and think about it. And you know, we have practice tomorrow, so that's kind of where we are.
I like that, Yeah, I mean, you could kind of interrupt the season a little bit or pause during the season. Now he's got a full season to go. Nice honor. A lot of his players returned last night. And one of the great coaches, college coaches, basketball coaches, whatever, however you want to categorize him. He's in there because and most people don't stay in a job. It used to be growing up, Yes, get off my line, guy that you stayed. And I took great pride in those coaches that they didn't. It was like, Okay, we did this, now we got to do it again next year. Not hey, I did that, Now I can go. I can get more money now. Is that being capitalizing on what you've accomplished. Yes, But I love those that stay for a long time that they incorporate themselves in the community part of the school, and Gino has certainly done that and should be up there just like Pat Summit. These are some of the great coaches of all time. What they do, how they do it and a high level. Don Staley is getting into that category. Tara van Derveer, who was at Stanford in that category. And they're labeled women's coaches, they're coaches. That's it. Plain and simple coaches. Uh, Seatan, would you give me the pole question for the final hour of the program? Heck, yeah, dude.
Let's see first we got up there. Eli Manning is a first ballot Hall of Famer or a Hall of Famer. That's so Fortunately they left off other, which was probably the best part of that question. Hold on, I'm gonna check the website. Uh, Eli Manning is a firm first of all at Hall of Famer or Hall of Famer or other. Right now, other has fifteen percent of the vote. That's fascinating to me. Most people have him as as just a Hall of Famer, not a first ballot Hall of Famer. Actually, that other has just jumped up to twenty six percent of the vote. Twenty six percent of the audience don't think that he's a Hall of Famer.
Well, yeah, Paul, if you're David Tyree, you're getting a prime invitation to that Hall of Fame ceremony, right like the Amtrak, the car service, the plane, whatever David Tyree is is first on the invite list. Besides family, is that is.
That helmet in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Gotta be like, I don't know if they're like the Baseball Hall of Fame where they you know, they have all this archival stuff. You know, you donate the bat that you got, your three thousand tid or your uniform is David type. I haven't been to the Pro Football Hall of Fame long, long time, Todd.
I'm saying something that says it is in fact on display at the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
You can't know how.
So it's something that says.
I'm looking at a story that says it is on display in canon.
Okay, that's okay, go off with a couple of different articles.
Uh, the lineage of that. David Tyree kept it. He loaned it to the Giants for a while, and then he agreed to loan it air quotes to the Hall of Fame.
It is still his. I don't know how many other pieces of memorabilia though, that the Pro Football Hall of Fame has. You know, baseball, there's the ball, there's a glove, there's a bat, there's bases. With football, it's football, a football, maybe somebody's uniform. This is a helmet. But I don't know how much memorabilia the Pro Football Hall of Fame has, how much they collect unless it's just uniforms, jerseys, maybe somebody's shoe if they kicked an important kick like Adam Vinteri, Doug, you know, did you take your shoes from the Super Bowls that he won with last second kicks? Yes, Paul, Yeah, appear.
I'm looking at the NFL's website and they have the Hall of Fame. They have a number of displays. A lot of them are jerseys worn by Hall of famers, especially Super Bowl MVPs. They loan them, like Kurt Warner super Bowl MVP jersey is at the Hall of Fame on loan.
But what kind of memorabilia do they have there other than jerseys.
They don't show that much on the website because they want you to drive over, so you only get to see someone.
Well, no, I can. I can go on the website with Baseball's Hall of Fame and there's tons of things there. Yeah, I don't think there is.
The Hall of Fame does not show that much.
Pictures wise, I don't think they have much because once again, you have a bat and your ball, a glove, a base, those things you could put on display. All right, random thought there. Marvin keeps telling me that Paul George he is the model for the new generation of the NBA. That's not good, by the way, because Paul George is is hurt again, and but you keep saying that Paul George is the guy kind of like Matthew Stafford is for these new quarterbacks in the NFL. Explain yourself with Paul George.
All right, So Paul George, when he plays, when healthy, I'm gonna preface him by saying that his game is the prototype for a lot of these guys that are six seven, six ' eight with a great handle. He could put it on the floor, he can shoot off the dribble, he can play defense, all of that, and so a lot of these guys look at him. Ace Bailey last night, the kid from Rutgers that's probably gonna go to either one or two in extra draft, said he studies Paul George. And Brandon Miller that was picked second overall a couple of years ago for the Hornet said the same thing. It's almost it's like Matthew Stafford when people say Caleb Williams and all these guys, where they're not saying Aaron Rodgers' saying Matthew Stafford a great player, but maybe not the Kreme de la creme rights.
So if you're six six eighty six, I know three in d guy in your your the model for that is is Paul George. Yeah.
The young kids say he's got a bag like bag like bag of tricks, like a great arsenal.
Okay, I know sometimes you have to translate for me because I I'm older, I don't understand. I thought the bag was money, all right.
So in basketball terms, when they say his bag is crazy like bag of tricks, like a great arsenal, like yep, okay, like Kevin Durant, he's got a bag. Paul George, he's got a bag. Kyrie Irving biggest bag problem.
Wow?
Yeah, are there bagless play the biggest Oh it's crazy because sometimes they say Johannis doesn't quote unquote have a bag, and that really means like handles, counter moves, has he's has He means like a pump fake or something like that. Yeah, hesitation, guess yes, So yeah, that's what that's where you get to hell. They'll say, oh, Gianna doesn't have a bag. I was like, look, will you score thirty five and now you don't need a bag?
Quote unquote Okay, Luca seems to have a bag. Oh for sure, yep, okay, just trying to differentiate who has a bag? How big is your bag? Can I see your bag? Right?
So let me ask Marvin just for a frame of reference for old school people, Karl Malone would not have a bag, but it can be an awesome player.
Correct, Yes, absolutely, John Stockton would not have a bag. No, no, White Chocolate, White Chocolate would.
Have a bag.
Oh, absolutely, Jamal Williams, those those guys, Yes, those guys where it's like, wait, how'd you do that?
Those are moves. White Chocolate has as good a bag as Kyrie.
Absolutely, look at you.
I love this he is. He's still playing pickup games in Florida against guys in dominating down there. Yes, Seaton, I'm gonna say.
C J.
McCollum, most underappreciated bag in the league. Oh, if we're going most under the Eli Manning Bag Award of the NBA. CJ McCollum not underappreciated.
Eli does not have a bag. No, c J McCollums.
CJ McCollum's got a bag in a half WHOA, yeah he.
Does, jealous?
No, we CJ.
McCollum doesn't have two bags, you are, he doesn't even have one bag. When's the last time somebody said, man, have you seen CJ. McCown? That's why he's underappreciated. His bag is underappreciated.
That's why it was the most underappreciated bag.
Is c J McCollum, Like Steph Curry has an unappreciated bag to me because people just label him a great shooter, right, but he has underrated handles, got it? And obviously in the previous generation, you know Alan, Tim Hardaway, those guys like all Bag Team.
All Bang. Oh if you came up with the all bag teams, the all time all baged Hey, I'm first team All bag.
Ye.
If you ever wondered when a piece of like common terminology uh died and you'd be like, wow, when did that? Officially that this is the moment. We are living that moment. We are officially killing off handles being called a deep bag. This is the death of it right now.
I was thinking of using a catchphrase called let me bring it back. And I'm not here to cheer you, I'm here to thank you Todd. Thank you is Bobby Porter.
If Todd gets in, it's double dead. Once Todd gets in.
I think Bobby Portas has a bag.
I want to look at the big eyes, and he does it some different things, but he doesn't get quite as much love as he should.
Thank you to Bobby Porters. Uh, Chris Sale, Todd, Chris Sayle won the cy young first time in his career fifteen years Tarik's school ball. He goes unanimous. They won the triple crown. So both left handed pitchers. Let's see last time that that happened. I think Kershaw's who won the triple crown? Did it happen with Kershaw? Anybody and let somebody else? No, No, I'm talking about triple crown. Let me see, let me see, let me see. I should have this information here at my fingertips, but I don't. Let me see. No, if I don't have that, it's happened before. I think I thought Kershaw and somebody else in the America League had the triple crowns. Yes, Marvin, Yes, Paul Well.
Is that that's wins, e and strikeouts?
Yeah?
Chris Sale and three schoobl both had it this year. Shane Bieber in twenty twenty for Cleveland, Verlander in twenty eleven for the Tigers Kershaw twenty eleven for the Dodgers.
Yeah, that's what I'm saying. In the same Seasonshaw, So okay, there we go. I knew we'd eventually get to it. Matt in Arizona, Hi, Matt, what's on your mind today?
Hey Dan, Thanks for taking the call. Appreciate it. Five eight, trending down to forty five and part of the shut in team with a knee replacement.
Okay, glad to have you. Thanks.
I just wanted to find out what you thought, what your thoughts on Kyler Murray race for the MVP. There was an article on ESPN that shows them just missing, and just want to get your thoughts on what he would have to do to climb in to that conversation.
Well, continue to win, and I think that they've been a really good story, and so is he. But I mean, Josh Allen is just playing lights out right now. Lamar Jackson's putting up better numbers than last year, but they've been looting and they just came off that loss. But for Kyler, I mean, is Kyler as valuable to his team as the Steelers placekicker is to his team? I mean, I mean just being in the conversation is a win for Kyler. Absolutely, this is what I was looking for. Third time two left handers won Cy Young's in the same season nineteen seventy seven, Steve Carlton, Sparky Lyle two thousand and two, Randy Johnson and Barry Zito. And as Paul mentioned, oh stad of the day stat of the Day here comes that? What stat of what? Clayton Kershaw justin Verlander in twenty eleven. Our stat of the Day is always brought to you by Panini America, the official trading cards for the Dan Patrick Show. When we come back, Joel Klatt will join us. What happens if Indiana wins, What happens if Indiana gets blown out? What happens if Indiana keeps it close. We'll talk to him about that game on Fox coming up on Saturday, and also some of the other matchups this weekend, and more of your phone calls as well. We're back after this.

More of your phone calls coming up. Big game this weekend, it's Ohio State hosting Indiana. Fox Sports will be there big noon kickoff the Top five matchup in Columbus, and Joel Klatt will be on the call with Gus Johnson, Jenny Tafft, and Joel joins us on the program. If I would have said before the season started, Indiana has a chance to beat Ohio State and Michigan in the same season, you would have said, what, I would.
Have thought, you were crazy? You know, when the schedule came out, you know, Indiana was an afterthought, not just because of them changing a coach and the fact that they hadn't had any history of success, but when you looked at it, they faced both teams that played for a national championship last year, Washington and Michigan, and they had Ohio State. So this has been quite remarkable. But it's also I think part and parcel to what the transformation of college football has provided Dan. You know, there is upward mobility and now there is an avenue for teams that have been in the middle or even the bottom of college football to compete. And to me, I think that that is a great thing what Indiana is doing and Colorado is doing, and others Arizona State is doing is good for college football and in particular playing games that have real meaningful implications towards the college football playoff.
Yeah, because it used to be back in the seventies and the eighties, you just stockpiled all your talent. You know, you look back at like the U had all of those running backs just waiting for a chance that would never happen. Today, you'd be like, you're getting there. Willis mcgahee's starting, I'm going yeah. And that's what I think college football has benefited because the kids are saying, I can go where I can play right away, and maybe I don't want to stay there the whole time. I can go there and make a name for myself. I can be Jaden Daniels at ASU, and then I could go to LSU and get a big payday here. So I do. I think that's why we have maybe not great teams, but I think we have some good, really good teams in college football. Yeah.
So I think if you're asking me, like, what's the biggest difference from five and six years ago, right kind of the height of the four team playoff, I would have said that the stockpiling was still going on then, because those teams have essentially a monopoly on the national championship, they could go into a living room Nick Saban and Kirby Smart and Dabo Sweeney and Rba Meyer and then Ryan Day could go into a living room and then they could say, listen, if you want to compete for a national championship, you have to come to our place, because nobody else could really compete. At that time, it was such a perpetual circle of the rich getting richer and the good teams getting the best players and then playing soft non conference schedules and then going back to the playoff and then getting the benefit of the doubt. Those teams didn't even have to win their division to get included into the four team playoff. But now it's very different. So the top of college football, I believe, has come down a little bit because they can't stockpile like we're talking about, and then the middle of college football has risen. And so that just small shift has created the parody where now we're looking at this and fifteen to twenty teams have a path to the College Football Playoff, and I think eight teams actually have a legitimate shot to win the National championship. All of that is good because the fan bases are more engaged. More fan bases more engaged at.
The top level. Give me those eight teams that can win the national title.
Yeah, I mean I might be stretching it with eight, because you know someone might scoff at, like a Penn State or a Notre Dame or maybe even Indiana. And we'll see this this week on Saturday against Ohio State. But Oregon is clearly in that class. Ohio State is clearly in that class. And then you've got all of the SEC teams because they've proven that any one of those teams can beat the other on any given day, they've all beaten each other. So Georgia and Texas and Alabama and Ole Miss and Tennessee and maybe even Texas A and m You know, there is a number of teams. I think that the team that I have question marks about that I know can play incredible offensive football's Miami. I'm just interested to see, like what could they do in a shootout? Now, do I think that they would win four games or even three games in a playoff? Probably not, because of the defense and the issues that they have on defense. But mooy would I love to see cam Ward go out there and sling it against some of the top defenses in the country. Do you believe in Penn State. It's a great question, you know. I think Penn State is exactly what they have been for the last few years, and until they prove otherwise, I guess like the onus is on them. They've got to prove to me that they're different than what they have been. And here's what they have been, an elite program that cannot beat top level teams in the sport. They couldn't beat Michigan and Ohio State the last couple of years. They've had one shot this year and they weren't able.
To do it.
They have played really well in other games this year, but the top end is interesting to me. I said before the year Dan that I thought that James Franklin, in order to have a successful season, or in order to define Penn State's season as successful, that they had to win a playoff game. And the reason is, and this goes back to what they have been over the last couple of years. If you go back and retroactively place a twelve team model over the four team model, you'll see that the team that was left out the most was Penn State. They would have made six playoffs if it was a twelve team model and not a four team model because they were perpetually right in that six to ten range. Well, their average rank in all those years was about nine. So what are they really in terms of a difference from what they have been Nothing unless they can prove that they can get into that final four, final eight, you know whatever it is. So to me, the proof is going to be if Penn State can actually win a playoff game.
I'm talking to Joel Klatt, Fox Sports lead college football analyst. He'll be on the call with Gus Johnson Jenny Taff for the big noon kickoff matchup in Columbus between Indiana and Ohio State. I think it gets tricky when you see the rankings, but then you also see the playoff format, and then you're going to see Boise State and then they get a bye just like BYU. Now it's Boise State. I think that's where people are like, wait a minute. Now they're kind of realizing how this is set up. It's not just hey, you're in the top twelve, you make the playoffs, it's where are you in your conference. And that's where I think there's going to be some pushback on this of why is Boise State getting a first round buy in Texas and Alabama and Georgia aren't. Yeah, okay, so you're right.
I think that people actually seeing right now, it's almost like we're kind of getting the product and we're thinking to ourselves like, wait, hold on, I want to know how that is made.
So here's how it works.
The highest ranked five conference champions, regardless of conference, get into the playoff. Then you go at large from that point on, and the at large teams are then the highest ranked teams from that point fourth until you get to twelve. Now, the four buys have to go to conference champions regardless of actual rank. So that means that the highest ranked four champions get the four buys, and those top four seeds. That's why you see projections with like a Miami in there with a buy and a Byu in there with a buy, or even some with Colorado with a buye if they were to win the Big twelve. So I think it's it's fascinating to me. I don't think it's a model that's going to last very long. By twenty six. I do believe that we're going to get a little bit different structure to this playoff, and it's probably going to enhance the regular season and expand the playoff not quite to sixteen. Then we're going to get a fourteen team model and it'll be only two buys just like the NFL, and the only two buys are going to go specifically to the SEC and the Big Ten.
Chant you have the Heisman Trophy, and it feels like every year we wait for the Heisman moment. I haven't seen the Heisman moment from Travis Hunter or Ashton Genty with Boise State. I don't know if we're going to get that. Travis Hunter probably has a better chance to have that moment where the nation sees that. But are those the only two candidates for the Heisman now?
Uh?
The oddsmaker sure seem that way, you know. I it's such a fascinating deal. I think that Ashton Genty is having the best season in college football, and yet I also believe we're never going to see a season like Travis Hunter is putting together.
So like, how do you match those two things up?
Because you know Genty is doing things that from a production standpoint, You know, we haven't seen since Melvin Gordon and since you know, Barry in a lot of ways in terms of the production from a yard standpoint and the yards per Carrie standpoint. But Hunter's doing things that we've never seen before period. To me, Hunter is going to get the show Hey Otani effect, which is just like this is a total unicorn. There's no way to actually measure it. And so Heisman moment, do we need it? When he's gonna play fourteen hundred snaps? You know, maybe not? And then you look at like last week against Utah, you know we're there, We're we're showcasing that game on Big Noon Saturday, and he's got the pick and then the fourth down play that he goes way up, you know over the defensive backs. He's gonna have an opportunity for the Heisman moment. Genty probably is not because of the conference in stages that he's going to play on, So Genty's gonna have to rely on pure production, while Hunter is gonna have some moment I firmly believe, whether it's this week against Camp or ongoing maybe in the Big twelve Championship game where he can have that moment where the entire country is just like, that's it. That's what I wanted to see, and he'll win the trophy, which is what the odds makers are kind of betting on.
As a Colorado alum, how do you feel when you hear see read that Michael Irvin is the one out front trying to get Dion to the Dallas Cowboys.
I mean, if I was listen, I was out front trying to get Dean at Colorado. So if Michael loves the Cowboys like I don't blame him, right, He's doing what he should do if he loves it.
I believe Dion. Do you believe Dion when he says, Hey, my kickstands down, I'm staying here. I love it here. They've got good recruits coming in because they're going to have to replace a couple of top five talents. But do you believe that if the Cowboy opportunity were there? No, I don't know. I don't know.
I know what he's told me. He's never he's never lied to me. I talked to him through the process of getting hired at Colorado. You know, I was involved to some degree, and every conversation I've ever had with him has been incredibly authentic and honest, and that's all I can go by. I asked him last Friday, do you want to go to the NFL? And he looked at me and he said no. And I said why, and he said because I don't feel like I would be fulfilling my calling and my purpose if I was there. And I asked him to expand on that, and he said, listen, Mike, my calling is to impact young men and be a mentor to young men. I happened to do that through coaching, and I feel like I can do that better at the college level than I could with a bunch of professionals that might listen to me and might not listen to me because of the amount of money that they're actually being paid. Take from that what you will. If Dallas makes him a great offer and his son is there, like, could he go? Yeah, of course of course he could go. Do I think that he desperately wants to? I don't think that that's the case. So if the opportunity arises, Dan, could he coach the Cowboys? Yes, and I think he would probably be really successful at it. I also know that he loves being at Colorado and I won't be surprised at all if he stays there.
Yeah, I don't know if that's the end all for him. I understand that. I understand what he's saying. He can be full Don in college's right, probably can't be full d On in the NFL.
Well, and think about it too, Like in college, and this is gonna, this is gonna forgive the language here or the description. You can be kind of a mini dictator as a head coach, like you are the top of the totem pole in college as the head coach. You're not in the NFL. You know, you're third at best in terms of personnel and ownership and everything like that. And part of what's unique about Colorado, and I know this because of my involvement, is that Colorado kind of said like, hey, hey man, here are the keys. You can do whatever you want with the uniforms, with the traditions like this, this is your vehicle. So as much as Colorado was desperate for a guy like Dion Sanders and Dion specifically, you know, Deon needs a place like Colorado to be authentically himself, you know. And so I think that what you're saying there, there's a lot of truth to that.
What do you think Florida State is thinking when they see the success that Dion is having. I can't imagine.
I really can't, because I know he was at least talked about when they were hiring Mike and so to see this listen, he was up and a finalist for the TCU job, and so like he has been in conversations with other programs and Colorado was the first one to pull the trigger.
What Florida State.
Is dealing with right now is something that everyone's going to have to look at, even Dion by the way, that if you're going to play in the portal, then there's a chance that the bottom can fall out, and we're seeing that with Florida State. They had a great year and then the bottom falls out. They cannot move on, Like I think it's sixty two is the number million dollars that they would have to spend to move on. That's you know, they're talking about trying to get out of their media rights deal, Like they can't do that, Dan, And what are they thinking. I think that they're probably viewing that as a missed opportunity.
Dion would probably liked to be asked if he wants to coach Florida State and be able to say no, you guys have your opportunity, knowing Dion be like, hey, you had your chance. I tried to tell you. Now now I'm staying here. Help me understand how Army can beat Notre Dame this weekend.
Well, Number one is their offense leads to great defense. The way that they control the football leads to the fact that a the number two scoring defense in the country. You know, so they protect themselves. Now, now the issue is is that I think Army, for the most part, is very difficult to prepare for. Every academy is because of the unique nature with which they play the game. But Notre Dame plays both Navy and Army every year. So if you're looking at an opponent, opponent that might not be quite as surprised or or might not have as much trouble preparing for Army, it would be Notre Dame. And the fact that Notre Dame is fine playing a physical, run oriented style of game, you know they're they're not going to be They're not going to shy away from that style of game. I think it's going to be really difficult for Army to win this. You look at the way that Notre Dame threw the ball against Navy, the way that they controlled the game. They just I think they're built for this. I think Notre Dame wins and probably covers. It would be a major upset in my eyes if Army were to win this game.
Have fun in Columbus. Our best to Gus. Thanks for joining us as always, Joel.
Yeah, I always love it.
I appreciate it. Dan, see you guys. Joe Klatt, Fox Sports Lead college football analyst, former Colorado quarterback. By the way, so Big Noon Kickoff will be there. Brady Quinn, who's part of Big Noon Kickoff, will join us. Coming up tomorrow, we'll take a break, last call for phone calls, what we learn, what's in store tomorrow. We will write tomorrow's headline today as well.
After this, be sure to catch the live edition of The Dan Patrick Show weekdays at nine am Eastern six am Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
The last call for phone calls, what we learn, what's in store tomorrow? This day in sports history, We're write tomorrow's headline today. Speaking of which David in Ohio, Hi David.
Hey, Dan, Happy Thursday. I've got your headline for tomorrow for tonight's game and some sad news from the Mothership. Your headline tomorrow is.
Right.
I'd like for tomorrow Heelers wife the brown number two on Thursday night football and the second thing from the Mothership. I don't know if you saw, they are getting rid of the PTI and the.
No no no, no no no Around the Horn. Around the Horn not not part of the interruption. He was on hold for a while and he forgot his headline cattling the.
Sports Center thing that show with the news in the light.
Yeah, around the Horn. I guess who's going to stay on until summer of twenty twenty five. And as I've mentioned a couple of times, I think Tony really is one of the most talented people there. Hopefully they find something for him with Around the Horn. I enjoyed it a chance to meet a lot of sports writers, podcasters, those who write for ESPN dot com, and an opportunity to do some TV and it's been a staple in my life. Usually on a daily basis. I try to watch either live or taped. But it'll be sad when Around the Horn goes. I think it's been a great, great show. All right, this day and sports history. Then we'll write tomorrow's headline. Today, PAULI, do you have any nominees for this day in sports history?
Nineteen thirty four, the New York Yankees purchased the contract of Joe DiMaggio from San Francisco of the PCL.
Let's see, oh, they were known as the San Francisco Seals, Seals Seals.
Nineteen eighty two, the NFL resumed its season following a fifty seven day play strike. That's the season, like you said, Mark, mostly one MVP strike shortened season.
On this day in nineteen eighty one, Jim McMahon of BYU threw for five hundred and fifty two yards in a win against Utah, but Gordon Hudgson set an NCAA record for receiving yards by a tight end in that game, two hundred and fifty nine. All right, how about the last time Indiana beat Michigan and Ohio State in the same season in football? Has that ever happened? Basketball? Yes? Football?
Paul, I didn't know the answer. I had some people smarter than me look it up, and I would have bet that not in our lifetime. That seems very unlikely. Who thinks it's happened before? And who would like to guess the year?
I think it's happened before in my lifetime.
Yes, it's happened one time in the past fifty years. So nineteen sixty four, No, nineteen eighty seven, weirdly, coach Bill Mallory. They went eight and four. Remember the running back Anthony Thompson kind of had a good run for them, No pun intended. They beat both Michigan and Ohio State before that. It never happened. So it's happened once in IU football history.
Okay, yeah, so you're saying there's a chance they've already beaten Michigan. No, they've got Ohio stick. Time to play right. Tomorrow's headline today, Todd start with you caught in a trap game.
Stellers leave the building with an.
Elvis with an elvis?
Ooh, elvis, that's well done. Wow.
See well, somebody sent me one, and I feel rude not using it, but if I was coming up with one off of the top of my head, it would have been our yen's ready for some football. Uh, someone sent me this one. See if you guess who it is. Russell Mania stealer quarterback slams Browns. Okay, russell Mania like WrestleMania, except it's Russell.
Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, Okay. They slammed the Browns like a wrestling move. So is it somebody we know who sent this to you? See it's Todd Fritz Send.
Todd sent between those two, and I'm like, I don't see something struggles with that.
I'm like, you know what, I'm gonna give him one and maybe he'll use it.
Maybe won't.
Marvin, how about you? All right?
Hot Chub time Machine, Browns upset Steelers.
Hot Chub all right?
I think I think we're three for three so far. That's Hot Tub time Machine. Yeah, wasn't John Cusac and Hot Tub time Machine? Like when you think of movies and you're like, John's been in some really you know, big big hits, you know, well respected movies, and then he was also in Hot Tub time Machine. Paulie Right, Tomorrow's headline today.
What's all the russ about Wilson drops? The Browns can't compare to these? Those are three are good?
Yeah, that's all the right to say, we're three for four, three for four good John Todd. You went two for two helping Seaton. Helping Seaton, very very nice. Let's see TC in California. High TC, what's on your mind today?
Hey, Dan and the Danett's been a huge fan of the show for over nine years. Don't know whether that's what's me down for a long time? Five eleven fit one eighty four.
Thank you.
I think you should embrace the idea of a signature sign off, you know, being the legend that you are, and he is. My take on it, I'm Dan Patrick. Just one second. I'm Dan Patrick. I'm blowing the whistle on today's show, and I think he should use that, and then on the left show, which I'm sure hold.
On, hold on, TC, let me let me write down.
Don't forget this, Dan, I'm.
Sam Patrick and I blow the whistle. Okay, that's great, got it? Uh TC, We're gonna try to guess your accent, Paulie. Where would you say? TC is?
I think he's originally Scottish.
Scottish all right, Todd, somewhere in Belgium, Belgium, Seaton, I'm gonna go straight up England, Okay, Marvin Ireland, I'm gonna go England. TC. Where are you from.
I'm from the County of Yorkshire, South Yorkshire in England. It's northern England, South York.
All right, we get yep. I know my accents. I know my accents. I don't know what's in store for meet Friday. I haven't even conferred with Tyler for tomorrow. But anybody have any hints?
Paulie, would you prefer to be surprised because it's awesome?
Yes? Yes, so don't tell you. Yes, that's I'd prefer to be surprised. I don't tell me because then you tell me, then I'll be surprised. I won't be surprised, Todd. What did you learn on today's program? Setan made a very good point earlier?
Jim Harbor praises his QB justin Herbert, Yet his game plan is to ground and pound them throw the ball less. What is that?
Seten O'Connor, What did you learn? I remember Joe Klatt went to Colorado. That's right, Marvin.
