Dan reacts to the New York Giants releasing their quarterback, Daniel Jones. Dan talks to Army Head Football Coach, Jeff Monken about the upcoming Army vs. Notre Dame game and the culture surrounding his team.
You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox Sports Radio Final Hour on this Friday. It's a meat Friday. At that morale is high. We just went out and surveyed the situation. Tyler Is created a masterpiece. We are celebrating Thanksgiving today on the Tragger Spatchcock turkey stuffing, mashed potatoes, green bean castrop, pumpkin pie, cherry pie.
Who is it better than we do? No body? Absolutely the most must win game of the weekend coming up Thursday Night. Football was interesting fun. I like seeing the snow. I don't know if the players like playing in the snow, but we like watching, you know, visually, it was great. And here we thought that the weather leading up to the game might be an issue, but not when the game started. It's the game started, and all of a sudden we had snow and nobody was happier than Jameis Winston.
That fourth quarter.
It really was like it was a whole paradigm shift, like we were playing so well offensively and then pain pain back to back drives, but turnover and I'm just like, oh my gosh, like this is really an NFL's film moment. The snow stars pouring down it stars getting like the I felt like my feet started getting heavy because I'm I'm squashing through the snow and uh man, it was so good and it was so great to end up getting win.
You know him as Joe the Policeman from the What's Going Down episode of That's My Mama. Put your hands together for mister Randy Watson.
What does he play like? He sounds yes all over the place. Yeah, oh man. And and to throw in paradigm, how about that? I give him a lot of credit. By the way, go to Damnpatrick dot com. We got you covered for the holidays. Damnpatrick dot com. Buy a Tailgate Moonshine four pack, receive a super special limited edition gift. Some might say, we're calling an audible and what Marvin he said, pero, Oh, he didn't say paradigm.
I'm kidding.
Now, I was going to say that, but then you can say that I can. And then they had a paradigms. No, he said paradigm Todd, do you know what paradigm means?
Paradigm is like, you know, kind of your one way. It could be a look at another way. It's my best way of defining that.
Okay, limited Quantity Shop now Danpatrick dot Com. Stat of the Day brought to you by Panini America, the official trading cards of the program. It'll be coming up this weekend. It's Army and it's Notre Dame, presented by Discover and you can see all the festivities from Yankee Stadium. We'll talk to the Army head coach. He will join us in about fifteen minutes. Jeff Mounkin, the Army head coach. Undefeated going into that game. They are fourteen point underdogs. Back to the Browns, they're three and eight. Steelers are eight and three. And I don't know if we learn anything more different about the Pittsburgh Steeler except for Mike Tomlin can't win on Thursday Night Division road games. He's now oh and six since two thousand and No other coach has lost three such games. Zach Taylor's oh and three. Gary Kubiak won and three, Dan Quinn won and three, Sean Payton three and three. Also the Browns for nine on three point three third downs, four for four on fourth down. Stat of your Day, stat of the Day. Stat of the day, here comes.
That what stat of the day.
Mike Tomlin got too cute? Third and four. Hey, we're gonna take Russ out and we're gonna bring in Justin Fields and we're gonna throw the football. Didn't work out there. But Pittsburgh should have won that game. You know, they came back, they were playing well. Yet James throw an interception and then run some class. I don't know, you're just watching you go. Sometimes you coach yourself into a loss, and it felt like that late in the game. It's like we find managers who manage a way to lose a game. Aaron Boone does it constantly for the Yankees analytics. But Cleveland played well, and I do love seeing late in the year. Now they should be playing hard. They're playing for paychecks. They get paid well. Your entertainers get out there entertain and some teams do and some teams don't. Cleveland played hard last night. Now, the fact that it was Pittsburgh, I think that played a big role for Miles Garrett. The fact that TJ. Watt is on the other side. He wants to prove that he is the best defensive player, the best edge rusher, and he had this to say after the game.
I say, I got a lot of respect for him, A lot of respect for no, all the guys over there and not ed Rush in the league.
But I number one.
Then No, that's when as you been to one edge one to defensive player of the Year, I'm the guy, So that runs to me. There's no other no other person being definite ask I am, or skiing or planning against like I am. So just goes to show. Now you get throw it out the window. I'm gonna find a way.
Yeah. Hard to argue recentcy bias. I'm all in on Miles Garrett. There are times when I watch and I think or expect him to be even greater. And I think it's because he is such He's so different than any player in the NFL. Size, speed, athleticism, all of that. I expect him to be better than what he is. I expect him to have twenty sacks every year. TJ Watt. Sometimes I'm surprised at his numbers, where you go, oh wow, I don't know he had that. Meant like, I just watched Miles Garrett sort of the way I did Aaron Donald, and I just expect them to be great. Reggie White, great, Lawrence Taylor. You know, you can run down the list of all of these great players, and then you look at numbers sometimes and numbers lie or they're deceiving, because I still go back to how many times did you hit the quarterback? How many hurries did you have? You can get a sack, but you might only get one sack, no tackles, But how many times did you get to the quarterback? That to me is a bigger impact than Hey, I sacked the quarterback one time. We get focused on that singular stat man, how many sacks did he have? He must add a great year. Well, sometimes guys getting double teamed on the other side to allow you to have, you know, single blocking schemes against you, So I think those can be misleading. I love when I see guys who pressure a quarterback eight seven to seven three DP show email address DP at Danpatrick dot com, Twitter handle the DP Show Morning. If you're watching on peacock, thank you for downloading the app. Couple of phone calls in here, we'll talk to the Army head coach. The college football weekend, the most must win game of the weekend, and Todd just told me, reminded me again he's got rhyme time. I do just give people a sample of what they can expect in about a half hour from.
Now Oregon chicken sound.
Doc quack quack duck cluck.
Ducks klucks exactly, Oregon chicken sound ducks clucks.
Oh okay.
And early we had Midshipman Turkey moistener. Midshipman turkey moistener.
Is it a turkey baster?
Turkey moistener something you put on turkey to make it more moist I.
Know, but that's a turkey baster, isn't it.
I like to call it a turkey moistener.
Moistener.
We're looking at navy gravy. Gravy is something that kind of moistens the turkey. I've been to my, like an uncle's house and they didn't have the gravy and it was very dry.
I think it's a turkey baster.
Yeah, Dan, you're more right here. You're both partially right. The baster is the moistener during the process of the cooking. The gravy is the cooochre mal when you're eating.
The gravy, the gravy gravy.
Moistens the turkey. The baster is the item you're using to squirt.
Correct to then moisten it.
Put a baster on top of turkey. It's not gonna really make it taste much.
Better, right.
Baster is nothing more than a syringe. But you're still moisturizing over turkey.
It's navy gravy. That's the only way it works. It's got a rhyme. Her navy baster doesn't get you anywhere.
Okay, I use a turkey baster.
Not talking about the tool that you used to put the gravy on the turkey. Well, talking about the gravy itself moistens the turkey.
The process is based it.
There you go, correct, Okay, but it's not the moistener, thank you, food itself. The gravy food.
Somebody has to be based to me, please, thank you. I'm moist I'm moistening it.
You're Rob Baster.
There you go. I knew that was there. Yeah, I want a rock right now, Rob based. Uh. Scott and Tulsa. Hi Scott, what's on your mind today?
Hi?
Dan?
You guys just crack me up. What sports show are you going to start talking about basters for turkeys? That's just hilarious. The reason I'm calling is you have had a great topic yesterday. Eli Manning going into the Hall of Fame. Earlier this year, you had Mark Sanchez on and you asked him to compare Eli with Russell Wilson, who has one win and came close to a second. Shortly thereafter, you had Chris Simson and asked him to compare Eli to his dad, who has two wins, but he only played in one game. I think you're comparing Eli to the wrong quarterback. It should be the answer to a really good trivia question. Who's the only quarterback in the NFL currently eligible for the Hall of Fame with two Super Bowl wins? That's not in Jim Plunkett. You know who it is, Yes, Jim Plunkett. Now let me give you just two differentiating points. Plunkett won the high Eli did not, and in their professional careers, even though Jim Plunkett did not dictate who he would not go play for and Eli did, he went and played for the New England Patriots. He won Rookie of the Year his first year and just got beat up. So I think he should be very much considered versus Eli. And he did it at a time when the running back was more important than the quarterbacks during the nineteen eighties.
You bring up great points there with Jim Plunkett. Yeah, he went to a bad New England team. I think his teammate Randy the Taha was the wide receiver went with him from Stanford and Jim when he went to the Raiders won two Super Bowls. Okay, I'm fine with that.
Yeah, Paul phil Simms technically has two Super Bowl rings. He didn't play in the second one because of injury and hosteler. I wonder if Phil Simms with the Giants with two rings and really nice career stats.
Yeah, he would have been he'd be in, right, Yeah, yeah, yeah, Mark.
Yeah, but Jim Punk you didn't beat Tom Brady twice, so he's not getting in.
If he did, that would have been really interesting, amazing how that happened because Tom wasn't even born, I know. Yeah, yeah, Hey, if you have a kid, I'm going to beat him in the Super Bowl. H we're not even married yet. Can't get in, No, can't get in. Jordan in Ohio, Hi Jordan, what's on your mind?
Dan?
Longtime listener, longtime caller. First, I want to shout out to Brady Quinn two pros because I do love hearing Brady and I listened to that show, just which Jonas was tougher to actually take radio callers the way that you do. My question is I sit here in Ohio and I've been thinking about this for several weeks. Joe Burrow is playing in an absolute MVP caliber level right now. If he was on a better team, I think he would be a very clear front runner. Are we getting ready to watch Joe Burrow pull a Carson Palmer exit? Is he going to be Matt Stafford where he just stays there until they trade him to a winner, or the actually going to build around one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL instead of waste him.
Well, they did build around him. They went to a super Bowl. Now they're going to dismantle. This happens with a lot of franchises. But you know, I hope that Joe doesn't have one of those careers where it's he's kind of stuck in neutral as far as you know, how the team performs. He's I thought he was going to be a I don't know if I said MVP, but dark Horse MVP this year, and I thought they'd be a whole lot better than they are. Yeah, Marvin, do.
You think the disappointment will be greater because they went to the Super Bowl so early in their career, especially for Chase Amburrow.
Well, you now know it's possible, and therefore your expectation level is raised considerably. And I don't think we've lessened it. We keep waiting for the Bengals. People are saying, hey, they can still make the playoffs, Like we still expect Joe Burrow to be Joe Montana.
Yeah, Marv, and I think not to bring this guy up, but to bring this guy up Aaron Rodgers. I think that that's the thing with him also that disappoints people greatly because he won a super Bowl at twenty seven, and they're like, he's going to get back two or three more times and win a couple more.
Well, same thing happened Dan Marino. Dan Marino. You know, maybe there's a parallel with Joe Burrow and Dan Marino, which wouldn't be a bad parallel if you're Joe Burrow and you had your career that way. But that might be your only super Bowl and very likely will be as long as Mahomes is still there. And Johnshallen, I mean, the AFC is really difficult. I mean the NFC does have probably the best team in the NFL in the Lions. But the AFC man, that's a slog, Yeah, PAULI.
I look at Ben Roethlisberger a little bit like that. He got his super Bowl at age twenty three and age twenty six and they didn't go back.
If you flip that.
And Roethlisberger's super bowls were at thirty one and thirty four, I think he'd be looked at he'd be way higher on the old chart of quarterbacks.
Well, they didn't win the first super Bowl because of him, Now you can say the second one they did. But he actually went to three super.
Bowls, correct, Yeah, he lost to the Packers the Air Russia.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, So that's three super Bowl appearances. But that first one we've had Jerome Bettison and he said, you know, Ben was as nervous as you know can be and didn't play well, and not that they won in spite of him, but he wasn't the reason why Usually we focus on the quarterback and say that's you know, you're the MVP. You're the reason why we won a super Bowl. The other one the past to san Antonio Holmes, he should have been the MVP one of the great great great clutch throws in football history. And yes, was it a great catch, absolutely, but to put it where he put it when nobody else Sports Illustrated had that unbelievable photo where you just see the defenders, nobody's getting it. That's where see, that's what I thought Russell Wilson was going to do against the Patriots. You would have a throw that would be the sidelines in the end zone, not across the middle. That then it's an incompletion or it's a touchdown. That's it. Three things can happen when you throw the football. The worst thing happened and instead of throwing it where it would have been incomplete and you live to have another down or two. All righty, take a break. We're going to talk to the Army head coach Jeff Mounkin. He's got Notre Dame. They're fourteen point underdogs. Hill John is coming up next here, Dan Patrick Show.

We will play the most must win game of the weekend coming up and more phone calls is well on this meet Friday. He is the head coach of Army the Black Knights. They've got Notre Dame at the Yankees Stadium coming up this weekend. He is Jeff Monkin, the head coach of Army. You got your pregame speech ready?
Ah?
No, I just whatever.
When the spirit moves me, I guess whatever I think is appropriate at the time, and I'll you know, share it with the guys.
Sometimes it's nothing and sometimes it's something.
So it just hits you if you're going to say something or not. Yeah, I don't.
I don't plan a speech or anything like that.
Okay, how much have you watched a Notre Dame? What like?
What's your takeaway from Notre Dame? Really talented, really well coached. You know, they're they're they're a very complete team. There's not offensively you try to find what what position maybe isn't their strength, but they're really athletic at receiver, they're long and in physical at tight end. Their backs or our downhill runners. They got great acceleration in the quarterback he makes every throw and and very sneaky run in the football. You think I really didn't anticipate he'd be that good of a runner, really strong on the offensive line, defensively, athletic, really good a linebacker. You know, they way out match us in the secondary. So they got they got a really good team.
Okay, But this kind of offensive philosophy that you guys have, I mean, it's a great offense and defensive philosophy because you guys chew up eight nine minutes if you can. Why is it so difficult? Even though Notre Dame faces this every year? But why do teams still have trouble with the Army offense?
It's different than everybody else.
And though they I'm certain have spent a lot of time in the offseason in spring ball, preseason camp. As you go through the season and there's eight or nine opponents doing something entirely different, and then you go back to the option plan that you have defensively, you've got to reteach that to the players and it's it's it's like playing a different sport. It's the pain in the butt for us with our in preseason face Air Force and Navy. We've got to we've got to transition our guys and it takes time to reteach it. And and get them plugged back in.
How important is the passing game to your offense this year?
It's important.
What it does is, uh, it equalizes the balance between us trying to run the ball and people putting a bunch of folks in the box trying to stop us. And obviously we want to run the football, we want to do that very effectively. But when there are extra hats finding their way to the ball, oftentimes that opens up opportunities for us in a play action game. And we're never going to be a team that throws it a whole lot, but uh, we've we've utilized that element a lot more this year, and I think at times it's really helped us and been effective.
Do you feel like an underdog this Saturday?
We're an underdog every Saturday?
No, you're not. No, you've been favored a lot. You're undefeated. So yes, Notre Dame is favored by whatever ten points or two touchdowns. But I didn't know if you've felt that, or you know, do you want that chip on your shoulder your team to feel like we're an underdog every week?
We've we've always got to play that way. Prognosticators might favor us but they haven't been to our practices and and and really come in and watched us. If they did, they'd make us an underdog every week. I know who we are, our players are, Uh, they're they're they're humble enough and understand what we've got to do to win here. And that's all we focus on. So we we we know it's gonna taken. It just an incredible effort for us to be able to be competitive with with Notre Dame tomorrow and and uh.
And that's that's what we're focused on, trying to play our best.
How important is it for you to understand what your athletes go through off the field outside of football, Whereas most coaches don't necessarily have to worry about, you know, schooling and everything else that goes along. I mean, this is this is unique, But I don't know since you haven't gone through it to understand what they're going through.
I've been here long enough to know what they're going through. But I've also been here long enough to know that we're not going to use that as an excuse. And we're we're we've got young men here that, uh, they've got to handle a lot. There's a there's a lot of responsibility academically, the professional standards here i e. The military part, and being a Division I football player, it's a lot of time. Nearly every moment of their day is accounted for and not controlled by them, and so it takes great self discipline to have a regiment and schedule like that.
But that's who we are.
And so I think those challenges and the decisions they got to face every day about the time that they spend on a class, on a test, getting sleep, nutrition, whatever it may be, that forces them to be focused. And so we never use the stuffed rucksack as they say here, you know, one hundred pounds a gear and a fifty pound rucksack. We never use that as an excuse. It's just it's an opportunity for our guys to really push themselves and be the best they can be.
I think I've asked this before, but I don't know if you have any new additions. Coolest thing in your office is what, holy moly man, you know what? Right over here next to me, there's a photo of my dad and I. My dad was my high school coach, and it's got an Army letter jacket. So our equipment manager gave my dad an Army letter jacket when he was coming to all the games.
My dad passed away.
About a year and a half ago, and uh, and he was just faithful on the sidelines.
Our players loved him.
And and so when my dad passed away, our players got ahold of that letter letter jacket. They had it framed and put a picture of my dad and I underneath it. And and uh, so that's that's really special to me. That's an addition that probably wasn't there the last time we talked.
There's your pregame speech right there.
Coach, Well, we got great we got great young men here, and you know that just speaks to the to the love that they have for this brotherhood and and uh and just the respect they have for this program.
And so I.
Really appreciate that, and I appreciate our players and hopefully hopefully they'll uh I'll have a great game tomorrow.
Good to talk to you again. Congrats on the season so far. Thanks so much.
I appreciate the opportunity be Navy.
It's coach Jeff Monkin, number nineteen Army nine to zero against number six Notre Dame at Yankee State. That's seven Eastern on NBC and Peacock by the way seven Eastern. Oh. You know, I had something in the mail that I got from a Hall of Fame coach. It says, Dan, place me in the most appropriate place, two exclamation points, I trust you, three exclamation points. And if I show you the back of the card, it says the CBS Today, NFL Today pregame show. It is a bobblehead Bill Cower, bobblehead.
Higher man of his work.
He did promise it. Let's go, yeah, Coach Cowerah, that's nice. I like that. Let me check out the chin. Ooh, that's a good chin. Got his head set on Yeah, Coach Kauner. He said that he wanted to send it in and I would have to place it appropriately, which I will do. Yes, Paul, You.
Could see the Bill Coward jaw line.
Yeah, better chin, better jawline, Don Shula, Bill Kower.
Is it chinnor jawline? Because it seems like it's a hybrid. Shula's chin is bustworthy alone, but Cower's jawline makes you want to run for your life.
Let me see this. How about we play the most must win game of the weekend. Do we have some music for the we do Todd. The most must win game of the weekend is.
It's the same team that I gave my dower rank through the Bucks on a four game losing streak. Better go to MetLife and beat those giants with Tommy DeVito. They still have time to catch the six and five Falcons with seven games left in that week.
Division seat No Connor. The most must win game of the weekend Michigan Wolverines.
If they have any hope of salvaging this season, they absolutely have to beat Northwestern this weekend. They need to win one of their last two games I think to be Bowl eligible, and I don't believe they're beating Ohio State.
They have to win this weekend. Marvin the mm W GTW.
The Washington Commanders coming up after two losses. They got to beat the Cowboys divisional game just to stay afloat in the NFC playoff hunt.
All right, Paul, most must win game of the weekend.
You got BYU at Arizona State. Both ranked at this time of the season. Arizona State, it's the must win. That's a program that does not get a lot of national attention. You're eight and two. You can take down BYU get yourself in the playoff picture and I hear it's a sellout national TV. Three point thirty eyeballs. Here is on a state.
I'm gonna say, Ohio steak most must win game of the weekend because of what's at stake at if you lose. Now you have Indiana, you have Oregon out of the big ten, and you're favored by ten. Now I would say Notre Dame, just so they can't afford another loss if you're going to try to stay in the hunt. There in the twelve team pictures. So that's the most must win game of the weekend. Kendall in Oklahoma, Hi, Kendall, what's on your mind today? And yes, Todd, I know you have a rhyme time. I know you do.
I stop sending your emails about Yes.
You've sent three or four of them. Well, we'll do that after we go out and sample the turkey. Okay, that seems reasonable, Okay, we will build in that time. I want to save it to the last. You know, I'm going to build up the hype for rhymetime.
You may say it's about fifty four and a half past.
No, No, I'm going to get it in, I promise. Kendall in Oklahoma, Hey Kendall.
Hey yeah, Dan, I'm almost thirty six, been a sports fan for forever. I'm a last long Bucks fan. I totally agree that Eli is definitely not a first Battle Hall of Famer, but he definitely should be inducted. I remember y'all talking about how Russ isn't there yet, and I just don't really understand that. And I just got to ask, is that an East coast bias? And can I hear Fritzie is Tom Mullen from Ransom?
Okay, there's no East coast bias, Kendall, what does that even mean? When it comes to Russell Wilson. Russell Wilson has been on this show more than any other national show. Any other national show is probably combined. So it's not We talked to him when he was Wisconsin, so it's not like we go, let's forget about Russ. I mean, he's been part of this radio family for a long, long long time, so we know what he's doing. But once again, my job is not to have somebody like me as much as I have to them. And Russ has not played well when he was in Denver, didn't play well, and I wondered if he was playing himself out of the Hall of Fame. But there's no East Coast bias. Eli Manning should get into the Hall of Fame, not first pell Hall of Famer. And I wondered if Russ was playing himself out of the Hall of Fame contention. If he had the second Super Bowl, then this wouldn't be an issue. Yes, Pauline, what do we have?
It's time to play guess that NFL.
News is it good news or bad news?
Oh?
Man, I don't know how to quantify that. After I tell it to you be the judge. Blank has released Blank. NFL News, Blank has released Blank.
The Giants have released Daniel Jones.
Correct.
The New York Giants three minutes ago released quarterback Daniel Jones, which would explain the soliloquy from yesterday. The statement from the New York Giants president John Marraw Daniel Jones came to see me this morning and asked if we would release him. We mutually agreed this week best for him and the team. Blah blah blah blah blah.
Can he be picked up by another team?
It would appear that he would be a complete on the waiver wire. I don't know exactly how that works. Who gets at first? But yes, they said where they were very complimentive of him, wishing nothing but best in the future. But he is now no longer in New York giant.
Wow.
Yes, so instead of treated and released, he's defeated and released.
I guess we can all right soon. Sensitivity level.
And I was wearing a B Kinds hoodie today.
How could I be wearing that and say something?
Yeah Jordan and Nashville, Hi Jordan, what's on your mind today? Hey?

Let's roll it out.
Oh my god, here we go. Okay, but you have to explain it.
Okay. I'm gonna give you guys a couple of clues, and the answers to those.
Clues rhyme with each other. Okay, an example of that, and let's see if you can provide the answer. Inebriated army head, inebriate, and these guys have these things have nothing to do with each other. Are just separate words that will rhyme. Inebriated, army head, army head, army head, like the head of the Army football.
Team, and like drunk, like Drunkenn is exactly where we're looking.
Drunken monkey is an inebriated army.
I'm sure he would be really thankful.
Safeguard Laker safeguard Laker safeguard something would be to do what to.
