Hour 1 – Jaylen Brown’s Team USA Snub, Phillies Rolling

Published Jul 11, 2024, 4:09 PM

Dan thinks there’s more to the story of Team USA not inviting Jaylen Brown to replace Kawhi Leonard for the Olympics. And he tries to temper expectations for Phillies fans while their team is tearing up the National League.

You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox Sports Radio.

I know we're just getting started, but this show has already been in progress. We've been discussing, discussing a little more than I thought we would. That is, when you go to a restaurant, how many times do you give a restaurant a chance? And then Paulie said, there's been a study or studies on this. I'm like, okay, because now I'm watching The Bear, the show about a restaurant in Chicago, So now I need to know everything about restaurants. Why you go, will you give it a second chance? Why you give it a second chance? And if you give it a third chance, does that mean that's going to be one of your favorites? So we were just discussing our philosophy of going to a restaurant and I didn't realize this, but you'll go once. Let's say it's not good, then you give it another chance. Now, if it's good the second time, then you go the third time. Maybe, or if it's good the first time and then the second time, then you're going to go and that's going.

To be one of your favorite restaurants. Think about it.

Where we go, we're habitual, you know, creatures that have it, like we always go to that restaurant or this restaurant. Do you try a new restaurant. How many times you've been blown away by going to a restaurant. So we've all had thoughts here. Marvin's favorite restaurant is in Disney World. It sure is, Yes, So you can only go once a year and that's your favorite because you go once a year, Yep, next year will be there and that'll still be your favorite restaurant. But Paulie said, yeah, there's a study or studies that have been done about what we do, why we do it, and then when you give up on a restaurant.

Yes, yeah, So this article is from a long time ago, but it's for people who are starting new restaurants. They say that people will try out a new restaurant, especially if it's local, and they'll like it or not like it. But it's not necessarily the food. It's the experience. The first time. Is it relatively quick? Is it does they seem like they ever act together? The food solid, and then they come back a second time. So the first experience isn't great. People will usually give you a chance. According to study for restaurant tours, but if the second one's not good, they've made their decision. There will not be a third. If someone comes back a third time, that means they've decided this is a restaurant they like that they're committing to, and if you come back for the third you're going to keep coming back on a regular basis, in perpetuity.

Almost.

That's the three three tries?

Do you guys have that same philosophy that if you give it one try, then you may give it another try, just to give it another chance, because somebody will say, oh, if you tried that restaurant, Noah, you should and then you go and then all of a sudden you go, and then all of a sudden, you're gonna go, let me try one more time. They tried another time. And then if you go the third time, does that mean now you pencil that in as one of your go to restaurants?

Yes?

See, I think that makes a lot of sense. I think if you're back for a third time, then you're probably in until you know you have a bad experience there and then you sort of reset the counter, you know, like there have been where we go to a restaurant and didn't really love it, but then well, we'll give it another shot. But if you give it another shot and that's two bad experiences in a row, you're probably not getting a third. I think that makes sense.

So two strikes and you're out, not three, but you will give it a second chance, and then what happens that third chance really decides what you're going to do with that restaurant.

If the second time goes well, you get a third, but if you're back for the third time, then you're probably going a fourth and fifth.

Yes, hun, maybe you just.

Went on an off night, or you didn't have the wai, or waitress was in a cranky mood, or you didn't order the thing that you should have gotten, and then next time you want to try something else, why did you order that?

You should get that when you go there.

There's a million things you can do to make it worth while to try it one more time.

Yeah.

So I'm three episodes in on the Bear, so obviously I'm an expert on this show. Not sure if I like it. This is my third episode, so I'm going to stick with it. But it's okay right now, It's okay. It's not great, but I know everybody talks about it being great. So this is my restaurant experience here, my third try with the Bear, and it's available on FX. I think Hulu is well but a well decorated show. And I'm three episodes in, so now I'm at that point of this is going to be my favorite show here, I think at least I'm not sure, but I'm trying.

My wife's very proud of me.

It's weird to get credit because you've watched three episodes of something.

She Goes. I'm very proud of you.

I said, why She Goes, because normally you would have watched half an episode and said, Noah, I don't think so. So I'm doing big boy things here. I'm watching three episodes. Yes, yes, going back to that restaurant thing.

You know that show Bar Rescue with John Taffer, real popular show where he goes in and rescues bars.

Is that the guy who wears the shirts that are too tight a little bit.

He's a big dude and he yells at people. It's a good show. He says.

There's a study that if you can get someone to come to your restaurant for the third time, the likelihood of a fourth visit is over seventy five percent.

Good.

Yeah.

He also says that you've made a commitment to the restaurant, it will now be in your rotation of places to go after the third time.

All right, yeah, so we've been discussing this this morning.

So we're just getting started. Actually we've been started here.

Yes, my friends just opened a restaurant and I had to fight every urge in me to make bear references when talking to them about the restaurant. So, how's up front of house? How how's that staffing? That like what I try every urge I could, don't sound like, don't talk about the bear. Don't talk about the bear, don't talk about you. Didn't say yes, chev, I did not. I didn't behind you, corner, corner, Yeah, didn't do those yeah, yes, ye, all right.

So eight seven seven three DP show email address Dpadanpatrick dot com, Twitter handle at TP show Here. We are deep into summer and sometimes you have topics like this. We have soccer. We have the Olympics. We had a friendly with the team USA versus Canada. We have tennis as well. We have baseball, and Roger Bennett, one of the co founders of Men and Blazers will join US after what happened yesterday. He's a proud American team. USA has fired their head coach, Greg Berholter, and they're open for business here. England beats Netherlands and Columbia beats Uruguay. So we'll talk some soccer with him coming up. Team USA in hoops beat Canada eighty six seventy two. I don't take anything from this, Anthony Edwards look good. I don't take anything from it. This is where you're trying to figure out your roster. Now you might send in five guys like it's a full team substitution. But I'm I'm sort of watching to see And this is the tricky part when you have these kind of teams. You're trying to get a team, not a team of all stars. And that is the big storyline with the Olympic team is Jalen Brown is not on the Olympic team. This after Kawhi Leonard said, you know what, let me sit this out. So Derek why to the Celtics. It gets the all and Grant Hill was running the show with the Olympic team and he talked about why he brought in Derek White on the Olympic team.

One of the many things that I really love about Derek and particularly with this team, is I don't feel like his role changes much with our team from what he does with the Celtics. He plays alongside two incredibly great young players in Jaylen Brown and Jason Tatum. And you know, this setting is hard. You know, you're the center of your universe and now you have to establish a role and it may be different than what you have to do with your team. And to so have someone who can come in and play off of guys, you know, be complimentary to some others, but then also stand out.

Okay, he's assembling a team, not all stars, but a team. But if you said, hey, Jason cha him is going to be on the team. Okay, Drew Holliday, Okay, good two way player plan for the Celtics. But if you said Derek White's going to get the call instead of Jalen Brown, Now, all of a sudden, you got my attention, and certainly got Jalen Brown's attention because he sent out cryptic messages emoji's yesterday, like is this about Nike? Because Jalen Brown has been critical about Nike and Nike of course is the big sponsor the apparel for the Olympic team. Well, Grant Hill is saying, look, you got to have players who fit roles on there. It's not just now they're going to win the gold medal. I think everybody can agree they're the prohibitive favor to win the gold medal. Does it matter? Well, you're still getting a team out there. And if you said to me, who can I add? Who can add you know, to what we need, but also not subtract to what we have. I understand Derek White. Derek White is very versatile, really good defender. He can shoot the three, doesn't lack confidence, plays hard, and if you put him on the bench and he doesn't play, you're probably not going to hear anything. Jalen Brown, I'm the Eastern Conference MVP. H I could have won the finals?

MVP? Why am I not playing? Did he win the finals? MVP?

He did?

Okay? Why did I think Jason Tatum did?

How to have it?

He won the Eastern Conference finals?

MVP checking?

Yeah, I thought Jason Tatum won it, but I would have given it to Jalen Brown.

So Tatum won the Larry bir Trophy.

I think I think, look, I know that Jalen Brown won Eastern Conference Finals MVP, right, but then I thought Jason Tatum won the.

BA Finals MVP. Jalen Brown, Oh, Boston Celtics regulations, so he won both, And then they cut right to Jason Tatum, who was like, I don't know, kind of awkward, but then like no, no, no, it's good. Oh good, I'm happy. So here he is well decorated.

Then, and I think you're probably looking at this team going if Jalen Brown doesn't play, how's he going to react to this? If Derek White doesn't play, we know how he's going to react. He'll be fine. He's on the Olympic team. Great experience. Jalen Brown's probably saying, I'm up there in the conversation of best player in the world. I should be playing. I'm a star, And I think that probably factored in. Do I think Nike the sponsorship aspect, Probably not, But I mean, nothing is out of the realm of possibility here with what he thinks. I don't know if there's more to the story. Feels like they're feels like there's a little bit more to the story. I just don't know what direction to go in on this. But we did call for Grant Hill, we did call for Jalen Brown. Yes, Marvin.

The only reason why I'm kind of going against you guys is because they've had guys like Tayshawn Prince, Kelden Johnson. You don't know who Kelden Johnson is, but he was on the Olympic team in twenty twenty one. So there's guys where it's like, you're good enough to be on this team, but you won't moan and cry if you don't play. Michael Rad, Tayshawn Prince, I said, Tey Shawn. But those guys like you're Andrea Igudala, you're happy to be on those teams. They're good guys if they can get into the game, but if not, they'll be all right. Because if you're Jalen Brown, why am I not playing?

Yeah?

I mean it's tricky because Jalen Brown's gonna go look at the year. I just tad and am I better than Anthony Davis? Well, in his mind he thinks he is. Am I more reliable? He probably thinks he is. I get it. I get his side of this, but I also have to understand how you're going to build the architect of building a team here, and that's the tricky part of this. Jalen Brown, to me, would probably be a little bit more disappointed or upset. I don't want to say angry if he's not playing, like you're on the roster, you're on the bench, and I should be playing okay, But then when you're not. Because there's a lot of star power here. I mean you got Lebron, you got kd, you got Steph Curry. I mean these are big ticket items. Anthony Edwards says he's the number one option here, so you got egos here. Sometimes you got to get the guys who are the foot soldiers. And it feels like every team has those or needs to have those, because sometimes when you see an all star team or a team full of stars lose, it's because they haven't been playing together. And that's the tricky part of this. Do I think they're a lot better than Canada?

Yes?

In Serbia, yes, in Germany yes, in Greece yes, Spain yes. But all it takes is one night when a team and your team does not. But yeah, that was the big story with Team USA was not the friendly against Canada and Canada tried really hard. Canada was playing like it was the gold medal, which doesn't bode well for Canada because Team USA was like, all right, gonna put in five new guys, all right, come on out, five new guys going in, all right, come on out. And then they didn't play well in the first ten minutes, and then they pulled away to win by I think fourteen points. But you know, just some of the headlines here so far in Team USA, a headline that has nothing to do with their actual play in the you know, leading up to the Olympics. Jim Beheim, former Olympic assistant coach, will join us a little bit later on. We can ask him why don't you think Jalen Brown's on the Olympic team? So we'll have that for you coming up phone number eight seven seven three DP show.

We'll take a break.

As everybody knows, we're of the hosts of the award winning Paully and Tony Foodsco Show. Yeah, but instead of us telling you how great we are, here's how Dan Patrick described us when he came on our show.

Quick, knowledgeable and funny, opinionated.

What are you doing interrupting our promo? Yeah, you wasn't talking about you. You took those clips totally of context.

Oh yeah, well, after this promo, I'm gonna take you out and beat you.

Let me put this into context.

Shut up.

Yeah, anyway, just listen to the Pauli and Tony Fusco Show on iHeartRadio. Apple podcasts oherever you get your podcasts.

Ying All right, seton pole question at least for hour one is going to be one.

Well, I think we got a couple. Is Jalen Brown too good to be on the US Olympic team?

You know, I'm still sticking with that. Jason Tatum was the MVP of the finals. He didn't win it, but he was no I think my logic, I think I argued for him. Jalen Brown exceeded our expectations, where Jason Tatum just played like Jason Tatum. Therefore, Jalen Brown stood out. I think that was my logic behind this. Okay, what else we got one here from Paulie? Would you rather have a NBA Finals MVP or an Olympic gold medal? I would rather have an NBA Finals MVP. Same yeah, Marvin.

Yeah, that's easy, Finals MVP.

Paulie. Wait, it's your pole question. You gotta have any answer to your point. I don't think them through.

I just write them.

I give almost no thoughts pretty much our philosophy. Now you're making me think, Okay, told me you would do that.

Gold medal or finals MVP.

I would say finals MVP because the gold medals expected for men's basketball.

What if it was in a sport that wasn't expected, like you shock the world kind of thing. Yes, yeah, I'm trying to think. Okay, what what American sport? What's the parallel? So if you could win Olympic gold in hockey or the Stanley Cup, you could win, you'd be on a Stanley Cup winning team, or you could win Olympic gold in hockey.

Is that a parallel. It's tougher. This's Stanley Cuff though.

What if it was specifically the Lake Placid nineteen eighty over Russia.

Year, That's then we don't go that far.

That's just the regular ordinary Olympics.

Would you'd rather win the greatest sporting event in American sports history or a random Stanley Cup final, that's the word?

Or be on the Florida Panthers.

Why would you take.

An Olympic gold hockey over at the Stanley Cup? If it's you know, you won and it wasn't wasn't that.

If it was the miracle on ice, I'm gonna take the miracle.

But anything under that to me would be like I would think you would, yeah, but.

You made you made the choice to easy little too extremely, as you always do when you.

Walk into someone's house and they have a gold medal on the wall for anything, or a finals MVP in their sport.

I don't know.

I think it's close. Depends on Olympic basketball. Nah, this guy's got a few gold medals because it's expected. Yeah, but it's when you win something that's not expected that's when people go, hey, can I see the gold medal? I don't know if people are going to Kevin Durant's house going, hey, bro, where's the gold medals?

I don't think anybody cares.

Yes, yeah, but this is gonna sound crappy of me, but you know, the you get to see the gold medal when the dude's doing a meet and greet at the local Chevy dealership every couple of months. Kevin Durant like, I don't remember which house I have it in? Uh oh yeah, I think I have it here.

Yeah.

But the reason why he has all those houses is because he's a finals MVP twice.

That's exactly my point. That's why the finals MVP is so good. Yes, the the Olympic gold medal is awesome to hang up, but it's like you bring it out when it's like, hey, I'm gonna be a fast Freddy's xon for two hours.

That's a good place.

You know he's gonna be signing autographs there. I like the slurpies there at Fast Freddy's. Xon. Come on down and you can touch the gold.

Medal Kevin Durantz like, I think I left it at Tahoe, But if I'm back there this year, I'll get it.

Yeah.

Uh.

The Jalen Brown one is interesting because he might be too good to be on the Olympic team.

Yeah, pulling, but I could see Jalen Brown taking this as a big slight. There's other star players like Devin Booker is a great scorer and they need a score, but he doesn't do other things.

But he's a guard.

Yeah, Jalen Brown seems.

To be a versatile player who plays defense. And I'm not an expert, he seems to be a very versatile NBA player in his prime, completely healthy.

Okay, I could see him be insulted.

But who thinks that there's more attached to this than just he doesn't fit with what the roster kind of presently, you know, is displaying that this is what we need. We needed that guy, that guy, that guy that position. Need a couple of guys coming off the bench role players who understand, hey, you may only play two minutes in a game, you may play five minutes, but you're going to be part of an Olympic gold medal team.

I don't know if there's more to this.

I mean it feels that way because here's the guy who had the best year in basketball and he's not going to be there.

Yes, do you think Grant Hill and those guys are thinking, well, he's not taking minutes from Lebron, he's not taking mentes from kat Anthony Edwards, Jason Tatum. So that's four guys already that are going to play a ton of minutes for Team US.

But if you said to him, Jalen, would you rather play five minutes or be left at home?

What's he going to say?

That's a question for him, Yes it is, And if he comes on the show, I'll say I'll ask him that.

Yes.

Well, it's weird though, that we're saying, because I agree that Jalen Brown is the kind of fellow who's gonna want to play.

He doesn't want to sit.

He wants to play, But he would be replacing Kawhi who was very comfortable sitting. Apparently, Apparently, if we're worried about Jalen Brown, He's not going to get the minutes.

But Kawhi was just like, I don't really need to play. I'll get my minutes when I get him. Don't worry about it.

I don't know if Kawhi went into this thinking I'm just gonna sit, I'm gonna chill.

But why would it be a problem now with Jalen Brown replacing those minutes.

I think that Jalen Brown would expect to play. I think Kawhi was hoping to play.

And that's Isn't that like a sort of like condemnation of Kawhi. Leonard Well, I'm surprised he was there to begin with. He shouldn't have been there. I mean that it's a bigger surprise that Kawhi was there than that Jalen Brown isn't there. But I have no problem if Jalen Brown was going to be added here. I mean, I'm I'm surprised that Derek White got the call. If we were standing on a playground right now and you had all of the dudes who were available for the US Olympic team standing in front of you, and you were the captain, and you were picking first, I would take Jalen Brown before Jason Tatum.

Rare one hundred percent. I'll take one hundred percent. I would take him.

Okay, yeah, maybe maybe somebody can, you know, shed some light on this, But I was just kind of surprised as Jalen Brown was that he was left off for the Olympic team. You know, that's one of those where you go, hey, if somebody drops out, you get a chance, like Caitlin Clark. Hey, if somebody gets injured Kitlyn Clark. It's going to be what would happen if Angel Reese would get called instead of Caitlin Clark because she fit the role that they needed for the Olympic team? And it's possible, Yes, DoD How do.

You feel about Brown or any athlete when they go to social media with their you know, passive aggressive and I'm the king of passive aggressive?

Do you if you really want to address it? Do you address it behind the scenes?

Well, how do you feel about it?

I don't think it's necessary.

Okay, shockingly, you would think I'd be the first one to say, yeah, make a little comments and let people know.

You you are the king of passive aggressive.

It looks it looks kind of weak and like really just you know, address it.

But you do despise what you do as that is.

I wish I wish I just got right to the point and didn't play these little k James.

Yeah, but why don't you stop yourself when you go, oh, I could be passive aggressive here.

Because a good passive aggressive moment can really sting more than just coming out and say something.

That's probably why.

Yes, Paul, Dan, You'll remember this.

Back in eighty eight, when John Thompson, the great Georgetown coach, built the Olympic team, he got criticism for leaving certain players off, like Steve Kerr, a great shooter.

There was others. I'm not gonna get through it.

These were all college players, weren't they correct?

Yeah, but there are some players that made the team. Where Dan Marley made it from Central Michigan over Steve Kerr. I don't want to get into the weeds, but he got a lot of criticism when they lost. By the design of his team. If this team, let's say a month from now or whatever how many weeks it is, it gets wins of silver. And you know, because of whatever Derek White's playing time and other players who aren't Jalen Brown. They're setting themselves up for criticism.

I don't think that we're gonna go yep, should add Jalen Brown on the team or why did you have Derek White?

Don't? Don't.

I don't think that would happen. I mean it might be, you know, sort of a cop out there for an excuse, but I mean they might just get out played, which they shouldn't, but they might just run into a team that's hot that night, better than them that night. I don't think that's going to happen, but I do. I am curious that this guy had the best year when you consider what he did in the postseason. Should he be in there based off of that? With Kawi stepping out? So kind of interesting? Eric in Illinois, Hi Eric, what's on your mind today?

Hey Dan?

How are you good? Sir?

This ticking Derek White over Jon Brown? When I heard that this morning coming home from work, It's insane. I mean, what if we do run up against the team that's hot and we lose by three points, I've got to say that Jalen Brown's three points better than Derek White. I mean, what, Jalen Brown is a top eight player in the NBA, and I just find it insane that he's not on the Olympic team. And I wish that's politics, because there's something political in some way, shape or form that is preventing him from being on the Olympic team.

A pure sport.

I don't think the Olympics are pure. I don't think they're pure. But do I think there's politics attached? Well, yeah, there is all the time to even the host country and how Russia got it or how China gets it. I mean there's politics attached to this. I don't know how deep this goes with Jalen Brown. I don't know if somebody has a grudge against him.

I don't think. I don't know if it comes down to that.

Dude is not going to be happy unless he's starting or he's getting a lot of minutes here. And I understand the judgment on that. I don't know if Grant Hill was the one who made that decision.

Yeah, Well that's the tough part for Grant Hill because he's saying like, well, look, obviously there's good players all over the place. Is a tough thing is leaving great players off. But I'm trying to build a team. And if you're Jalen Brown hearing those things and you're feeling slighted, everything you say is oh so, oh so I'm not a team player. Oh so I don't make that team better. Oh so I don't Everything that Grant Hill is saying is another reason why Jalen Brown is like, oh so I'm not a good team player. Oh so I would be a problem. Oh so I'm not the gosh. It's a a tough spot to be in. Whereas Derek White is going to be like, oh yeah, okay, I get it.

Well, nobody's going to argue, right, Derek White's not a team player, right, But you can make an argument that Jalen Brown might be a me first guy, because that's what the NBA is with their stars. It starts with you individually. Now, what do you do to make your team better?

After having the year Jalen Brown just had I understand him being like, I should be getting more minutes.

Yes, yes, yes, Mart.

But also, Jalen Brown better not be an excuse if Steph Curry, Kevin Durant, Lebron James, Devin Booker don't win the gold medal, you can't say if we had Jaylen Brown.

One, Jalen Brown.

Yes, yeah, this is different than Durant injures himself in the NBA finals. And then you say, well, if we'd have had Durant, we would have won this a little different than that, man, if we only had Jalen Brown.

Yeah, Pauline.

By the way, I just double checked, and Jaylen Brown is American. He is completely ultimate. Okay, just as journalists we should check our facts.

Because I was wondering.

I mean, a real slap in the face would have been if they picked Al Horford to play for a team USA. But but he's with Puerto Ricos. Yes, weirdly if that one game, like Chris porzingis yes, nighting Guard. Everybody on the Celtics got picked for the Olympic team, except for the guy who was the MVP in the finals.

Payan Pridger was on the select team. Come on, Greg Houser got picked. Howser, How's how's that? How's there?

Yeah?

Tricky, tricky there. Bobby in Chicago, Huh, Bobby, what's on your mind?

Say Dan? First time long time six four. I wanted to get you guys a shout out for having Vinnie Goodwill on I hope you have him on again. He's one of the best NBA follows out there, I think. But Jalen Brown, I think the weirdest part of it is, you know, I thought it was some garbage from Grant Hill saying, you know, talking about building a team, because I mean, they're replacing Kawhi Leonard not exactly last guy on the bench, role player, And I think Jalen Brown makes a lot more sense than Derek White, so I think who he's replacing makes it all even more stranger.

Anyway, all right, thank you Bobby. By the way, Vincent goodwill he can. He's invited back whenever he wants to. I thought he had a great appearance and had some fun, had some attitude there and covering the NBA for Yahoo Sports. John and Hartford, Hi, John, what's on your mind today?

Hey guys.

I have a theory as to why USA Basketball doesn't want Jalen Brown, and I think they picked Derek White to make it look like it was a role player sort of thing. I think they're worried that one they're standing on the post getting the gold medal, that Jalen Brown will use that opportunity to make a political statement. About Palestine or Israel or something along those lines.

Yeah.

I don't know if religion Wood factor into this.

I don't know about you know, his disregard for Nike Iet. It could be political. Once again, I think there's more to it. I just don't know exactly what it is. And the person who I called did not respond, you know, And then I text a message just to say, can you enlighten me? This is somebody around this situation. Can you enlighten me on this if there's anything here I need to know.

Yes.

So when people keep saying this is political, I thought it was more like, uh, well there's the cool kids.

In the NBA, and he's not in that group yet. Yeah.

I mean there's Lebron, Steph KD all of those guys. Those are like the cool kids, and then there's the other guys who are all really good. But are you cuting into our club? That's also political, that's also friendship face. That's also like, well, we're the group here that really is deciding who's going to be But is this We're not fighting with you over this.

Dream team like with Isaiah Thomas. I do not think I have no idea. I just know that this guy was the finals Mvpick. I have to factor that in of him playing on the team, certainly with Kawhi out of there. And it's not like, well, we need to have two guards and we need to have two forwards and that's not basketball anymore. That doesn't that doesn't equate to leaving somebody that talented, unless it's a we kind of like the older guys on the roster here, we want to have fun, just like the Dream Team did.

We earned it.

I don't know, you know what role Lebron and Staph and KD play. I don't know what the relationship is with Jaylen Brown. I just know that they kept going down the Celtic roster saying uh yes, yes, yes, yes, yes.

I don't know. M he kind of maybe got lucky during the finals this year.

I don't know if it has to do with his thoughts on the tax code and what we should do with the border, or if it's you know, yes, Paul Bron.

I went back and looked, and there's a great article that talks about the Dream Team of ninety two and you know, leaving off Isaiah Thomas.

One of the names that was considered to be left.

Off was Charles Barkley, and the reasoning was they were concerned about Charles behavior overseas on and off the court.

That's what the quote was.

And Charles Barkley was one of the last names with and Charles was in his prime, you know, twenty eight and thirteen. There was no reason to keep off. But they were on the fence about Charles Barkley at the time. He ended up being the leading scorer for the team.

Yeah, but then he got he didn't make the Olympic team when Bob Knight was the coach. He got cut and that was kind of the wake up call for Barkley. Then that might have been more with just his style of player, physicality or getting in shape. But I remember Bob Knight cut him and Barkleave is like that one hurt got humbled.

All right, we'll take a break here. We got our poll question. Uh.

Also, we have our play of the day coming up. We'll talk to one of the co founders of Men and Blazers. They always entertaining Roger Bennett. Team USA Soccer needs a new head coach. What are the odds that they actually get a recognizable, well known, reputable head coach. We'll talk to him coming up and uh more of your phone calls as well.

We're back after this.

Be sure to catch the live edition of The Dan Patrick Show weekdays at nine am Eastern six am Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio wapp Oh my, God.

Of the day, but it lives like God. It Play of the Day.

Check this out righty with the one one swung on hitting the air, declap Field going back on it.

Fargus looking up and that's gone opposite.

Field, lead off home run Kyle Schwarmer puts the Phillies on the board.

It's one that I think.

That's courtesy of the Phillies Radio network. Phillies beat the Dodgers, their first three game series sweep of the Dodgers since twenty eleven. Since joining the Phillies in twenty twenty two, Kyle Schwarber has twenty six leadoff home runs, most in baseball. First of all, he doesn't look like he looks like a guy that you would see in a beer league playing softball.

And he comes to the.

Plate and you're like, all right, how crushing must that be? When you're a pitcher, You've been waiting for your four days and then you get your chance to pitch, and then you're out there and your first batter and then he hits a home run.

A Play of the Day. Play of the Day brought to you by the great folks.

Phillies are on pace to have one of the better seasons at least first half of the season, but doesn't always equate to World Series success. I think the last time a team had this many wins or was over sixty wins at the All Star break. I think the Red Sox in twenty fifteen had a great record at the All Star break, but the Phillies completing the sweep of the Dodgers. All righty, A couple more phone calls in here Sarah and Cape Cod. Hi Sarah, what's on your mind?

Hi Dan?

How are you great? Sarah?

I am Sarah from Cape Cod and I'm calling for the first time on a long time, over twenty years, and I'm just wondering if you things Jalen Brown should pull a Tanya Harding on Derek White.

Well, they're teammates. I love you guys. Thank you, Sarah, thank you.

That's a little harsh.

Yeah, it's a harsh going to take a lead pipe to her if it weren't to him.

No, no, you can't.

You don't encourage.

Yeah, they really really discourage.

Then.

By the way, the Phillies first team this season to reach sixty wins. The last team to do that was the Red Sox in twenty eighteen. Twenty eighteen, not twenty fifteen. I want to make sure I get that correct. E me, Brandy and Iowa Brandy, welcome back.

What do you have for me?

Hey?

Dan, Hey, thanks for taking my call. Oh are you there?

Yeap?

Oh sorry, I think it cut off is like, hey, I think we're missing. The other part of this discussion is would we this morning if Jalen Brown was chosen be discussing the slight for Jalen Brunson, who I feel should have been the next up as a replacement.

He's injured.

Well that's why I didn't know if he was recovered enough or.

If he was close. Okay, yeah, thank you, Brady. Yeah, we brought that up earlier this morning, that Jalen Brunson. You know, I think you still recovering from surgery, PAULI, do you have an update on jail.

Jaylen Brunson left hand fractured after Game seven against the Pacers, have a minor surgery to repair it.

But he's clearly just weeks after that.

Okay.

And by the way, minor surgery is when it's on somebody else. If you've ever had surgery and they put you under, it's not minor surgery.

What if you're not under? Does it change it? Well, like a general anesthetic?

You know sometimes they do the arthroscopic surgery on the knees and you're partially awake.

Oh no, I'm well aware of that one because I was offered that and I said, no, knock me out.

I don't want to.

The doctor said, do you want to watch your surgery? And I go, do you have something else on Netflix that I can watch?

Can we agree that when they enter your body at surgery.

Yeah, it's not minor surgery, it's surgery. Carlos in Indiana High Carlos, what's on your mind?

Yeah?

I'd just like to say about the whole jail and Brown yeah situation, We won't. We might not find out if an answer does it come out like right now or during this time. We might not know until it comes time to select the next team. And if he's left off that then obviously there's probably more to what's going on, whether it be political or whatever.

Carlos, I can't wait four years for the answer on this. I'm going to be done in three and a half years. I won't even get the opportunity to get the answer if we wait until the next Olympic team. But who knows if he'll be worthy of that in four years, but this year he certainly is. It's just does it make it worse that they took one of his teammates? It feels like that because Derek White doesn't have star power, but if you watch the game, you know he's involved at both ends of the floor and he played great this year. But it does feel like, hey, we're going to take another Celtic. Alrighty, now's my chance?

Is Eric?

Wait? Why? Yeah? See that's a.

Well shift topics on a downer, But is this the first of many lasts that we're having on this show? Is this the last Summer Olympics we'll be doing.

That would be correct.

The next Summer Olympics twenty twenty eight, July fourteenth, twenty twenty eight in Los Angeles.

We will not be doing the show.

We won't be so this this is the first last event we're covering.

Do we need to make a tote board? Here? A chart?

We have to We should be graphing this more carefully and tracking these things because had I realized this was our first last event, we should be in Paris right now.

Damn it?

Yeah crap, Okay, noted we have a better chance of going than Jalen Brown does. Nine of us were invited though, Yeah.

Not even alternates.

No Bill in South Dakota, Good morning, Bill, what's on your mind today?

Hey? How's it going there, mister Patrick. I'm a first time long time I got six to one and I'm a deceptive two sixty. I got a couple of questions for you. Yesterday, Michael Kopek came in for the White Sox and he struck out three of my Minnesota twins on nine pitches for the immaculate inning. Yeah, well it's now possible with a pitch clock. Correct if you get a violation where a pitcher could accomplish that with one pitch less than nine, right, So are we going to call that the immaculate eight inning?

Immaculate eight immaculate eight eight pitches.

This is a Fritzy specialist.

Thank You's got a little something there. Yeah.

I don't think we're gonna make a T shirt on it, but that's something.

Thank you.

By the way, this White Sox reliever earned a save in the game one. I think they had a doubleheader. He struck out three Minnesota Twins on nine pitches, the first immaculate inning by a White Sox pitcher since nineteen twenty three. Wow, and if you would have said you guys, thank you. Tim Kirchen Sloppy Thurston.

Sloppy Thurston in nineteen twenty.

Three stand today stant of to Day, Stantata Day.

This is the stule of the day, Out.

Of the Day, brought you by Bananian American Official Trading Cards of the program.

How do you think he got the nickname Sloppy Thurston.

I look at it up.

Hollis John Sloppy Thurston Junior, the third pretty good player.

Uh yeah.

He earned his nickname, according to Baseball Reference, because he always showed up disheveled two games. Okay, there's no deep cut on it, just sloppy.

That's when he had great nicknames. You know, three fingers Brown actually had three fingers.

Yeah.

I think that's probably why he got the nickname.

What happened to the other two?

Yeah, thank you, Tod.

He is one of the co founders and men and Blazers. Roger Bennett will join us hour two on the way
