After the Tombstone mines flooded in 1890, thousands of people packed up and left Tombstone. Tombstone held its breath, hoping for a revival of mining, but by 1900 Tombstone’s population was just 700. Soon, the price of silver dropped to just 50 cents per ounce, and silver mining in Tombstone became infeasible.

 

Meanwhile, Bisbee was booming. And by the time Arizona became a state in 1912 Bisbee was the biggest, liveliest city between St. Louis and San Francisco. So residents voted to move the County Seat to Bisbee.

All over the country emergency dispatchers — or headset heroes — are being remembered and hailed during National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week.

 

And the dispatchers who work at the Southeastern Arizona Communications are part of that. Their job regularly puts them in contact with people when they’re at their worst.

The job is challenging and difficult, according to Sierra Vista Police Cmdr. Chris Hiser. Hiser is the interim director of SEACOM. 

 

But for dispatcher Rob Satterfield, it’s all about being the calming voice on the other end of the line.

 

Satterfield genuinely enjoys it. He feels drawn to the work.

 

Satterfield isn’t a full-time dispatcher. He works as a computer technician for the Sierra Vista Unified School District. He’s had that job for 30 years. But being a dispatcher is a passion that he took up as a volunteer, and then as a part-timer. That was also 30 years ago.

 

To him, it’s the people who surround him that make the already challenging work that much easier.

 

Satterfield is the father of three children. He thought about becoming a cop when he left the Army 30 years ago, but he had a bad knee. But he still wanted to find a way to give back to the community.

 

That’s why he started volunteering as a dispatcher.

 

He does it part-time because he feels he would’ve burned out a long time ago doing the job full-time.

 

Amy Bryan does it full time. Bryan’s done it for the last year and a half. She agrees that the profession is a tough one -- “not for the faint of heart.” But she also says its fulfilling. 

 

Bryan has always wanted to be a dispatcher. She loves helping her community.

 

To her, the job has become even more rewarding since dispatchers were allowed to give callers CPR advice, and other life-saving techniques.

 

Raised in Sierra Vista, Bryan said one of the challenges of the job is that she sometimes recognizes the people who are calling for help.

 

But as tough as the job can often be, she’s fulfilling her childhood dream of wanting to help people.

 

Bryan and Satterfield both say the work is rewarding, but equally difficult.

 

Right now SEACOM is looking to hire more dispatchers. Just over half of the 20 positions are filled.

 

So anyone interested in becoming a dispatcher can call the City of Sierra Vista’s Human Resources Division.

There were three days of action-packed collegiate rodeo that took place at the Cochise County Fairgrounds on Friday, Saturday and Sunday last week.

 

Each day there was a separate rodeo, gearing up toward Sunday when the Grand Canyon Region team champion, all-around cowboy and cowgirl, and individual event winners were crowned. 

 

In the Grand Canyon Region, Cochise College competed against larger schools like the three major universities in Arizona in addition to New Mexico State University and New Mexico Highlands.

 

We spoke to a few of the students who participated to hear how it went.

 

Maddee Doerr is a senior at Cochise College. She won the women’s all around 

We also spoke with Zane Munoz, who’s also a senior at Cochise College. Munoz was the Grand Canyon’s region saddle bronc champion.

And finally, we spoke with the Cochise College Rodeo Coach, Rick Smith about the team this year.

The men and women’s cochise college teams finished second in the grand canyon region, and they’ve qualified for the college national finals rodeo. The finals will be held in casper wyoming from June 13th through June 19th.

 

While winding through the “lower loop” campsites of Kartchner Caverns State Park on Saturday, visitors were immediately struck by a vast expanse of Airstreams.

 

The collection of silvery travel trailers came from all parts of the state for a rally organized by the Arizona Airstream Club.

 

While the Arizona Club typically holds a rally every month, the COVID pandemic caused RV parks to shut down in 2020. But now that COVID cases are on a downward trend, parks are reopening and travelers are venturing back out on the road again.

 

The group’s members range from year-round Arizona residents to snowbirds.

 

Arizona Airstream Club Vice President Mike McBurney, who will be the club’s president next year, told us about his Cochise County experiences.

 

McBurney and his wife live in Ajo. They love this area and have spent time in Tombstone, Bisbee and Benson. While camping at Kartchner Caverns State Park, they went on the Big Room cave tour. They’ll definitely be returning to Cochise County next year.

 

Finally, today we’re remembering the life of Steve Whitecotton of Hereford. Steve was born in Blytheville, Arkansas in 1952.

 

Raised in Keiser, Arkansas, he was a 1971 graduate of Rivercrest High School and attended Arkansas Tech University. In 1973, Steve joined the United States Air Force and proudly served his country for 15 years attaining the rank of Technical Sergeant before transferring to the Army in 1988, serving for 10 years. He was a Gulf War Veteran, serving with the First Armor Division and retired with the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 2.

 

Steve enjoyed riding his motorcycle, had his pilot’s license, enjoyed scuba diving as a Master Diver, tinkering in his shop on projects, and working on his “farm”. His smile and laughter will be missed by everyone who knew and loved him, especially those closest.
