From the Daily Os. I'm emma, I'm lucy. It's Thursday, the thirteenth of March. Here's what's making headlines this evening.

Trade Minister Don Farrell will speak with a White House representative about US President Donald Trump's import tariffs on Australian's steel and aluminium. The twenty five percent tariffs came into effect yesterday. Farrell said the government has quote not given up on trying to negotiate an exemption on the tariff. The minister confirmed he's secured a phone call with a trade official from the Trump administration this weekend. We'll be talking with our American counterparts to try and convince them that they are heading in the wrong direction, he said. Farrell promised to maintain the government's quote cool, calm and collected approach to negotiations.

Energy prices are set to rise by up to nine percent in large parts of the country under recommendations from the Energy Market Regulate. The increases will affect households and businesses in New South Wales, South Australia and Southeast Queensland, with power bill increases expected from July. Chair of the Australian Energy Regulator, Claire Savage said cost pressures have impacted every part of the network. Last year, the federal government introduced a three hundred dollars energy bill discount for households applied across the financial year. It's not yet clear if it will extend this discount in the upcoming budget, due to be handed down on the twenty fifth of March. Energy Minister Chris Bowen said the government will quote consider what more can be done.

A mission to rescue two NASA astronauts who've been stranded on the International Space Station for nine months has been delayed. Astronauts Barry Wilmore and Sunita Williams traveled to the station in June on a Boeing mission. They were scheduled to return that month, but technical difficulties made it unsafe for the pair to make the journey on the Boeing craft. SpaceX, which is owned by Elon Musk, then offered to assist in a rescue mission, saying it stood ready to support NASA however it can. NASA was due to launch a SpaceX rocket from Florida today, but the mission was canceled at the last minute, and NASA spokesperson blamed an issue with the launch pad's quote hydraulic system on the ground side. It's not yet clear when the next launch attempt will be scheduled.

And today's good news. Donating blood regularly could lower the risk of developing cancer, new research has found. Scientists from the Francis Creek Institute, a biomedical research center in London, compared blood samples from two groups of healthy men in their sixties. One group were regular blood donors and the other had rarely donated. The study found those who gave blood regularly for several years were more likely to have genetic changes linked to a decreased risk of cancer.

That's the latest from the Daily os newsroom. If you're looking for anything else, listen to today's deep dive on what Trump's tariffs might mean for Australia.

We will be back tomorrow morning with another deep dive, but until then, have a great night.
