Prime Minister Anthony Albanesi has confirmed he will speak with European Union leaders about the possibility of sending Australian peacekeeping troops to Ukraine. The PM said he was invited to participate in talks with the UK led quote Coalition of the Willing by his British counterpart, Keir Starmer. The coalition was formed during recent crisis talks in London to boost support for Ukraine and end Russia's war there. Albanesi said Canada and New Zealand had also accepted an invitation to join discussions with other leaders from European countries, including France, Italy and Germany. Speaking in Perth today, Albanizi said, quote, we look forward to their being peace in Ukraine, but we don't have to think very hard about which side we're on in this conflict. Russia is the aggressor.
The United Nations has accused Israel of genocidal acts in a new report. The findings from an independent UN commission also accuse Israeli forces of the systemic use of sexual, reproductive and other gender based violence against women in Gaza. The paper examines what it calls Israel's widespread destruction and disproportionate violence, including the targeting of residential buildings and the indiscriminate use of heavy explosives in densely populated areas. It also alleges attacks on sexual and reproductive health care facilities in Gaza as a method of war by Israel. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netnya, who has rejected the findings and labeled the UN Human Rights Council as anti Semitic, rotten, and terrorist supporting.
US President Donald Trump has threatened a two hundred percent tariff on European alcohol. It comes amid an escalating trade war between the two regions, which started with a blanket twenty five percent tariff on mesals imported to the US from the EU. Trump's alcohol tax came after Europe announced plans to add a fifty percent tax on all US whiskey. Wine is Europe's biggest export to the US, and the two hundred percent tariff could cost billions. EU and US officials are continuing negotiations to avoid further trade tensions. It comes as Australia continues its efforts to avoid a twenty five percent tariff on aluminium and steel imports to the US.
And today's good news, Aussie scientists have learned more about the history of Antarctica by analyzing penguin pooh. It's the good news you didn't see coming. Researchers from the University of Adelaide traveled to the Ross Sea on the coast of Antarctica, where they visited active and abandoned a Deli penguin colonies. They dug about a meter below ground to excavate around one hundred and fifty six samples. One of the research which, as Jamie Wood said, the dig was like quote going back through time, with the team collecting samples of penguin pooh, eggshells, feathers, cells, and DNA from other animal species. The samples generated more than ninety billion DNA sequences, giving experts new insights into six thousand years of life and changes on the remote continent.
