Most of the emissions coming out of an Australian home come from four or five familiar machines: the car in the driveway, the hot water system, the heater, the cooktop. Rewiring Australia's modelling puts those household choices at more than 38% of the national total. The catch is that most of those decisions are made last-minute, when the hot water dies on a Tuesday and the plumber is already on the way with a unit on his truck. By Rewiring's count, about 5,000 Australians hit one of those moments every single day. The non-profit has spent years working out what actually happens when real houses go electric, street by street - but a handful of experts can only talk a few hundred households through it, and there are 11 million homes in this country.
