The Blues one up in the series and we had to opt the stadium in Perth on Wednesday, the eighteenth of June for Game two before we wrap up the series in Sydney at a cool stadium. We'll get the team's thoughts on Origin. On Wednesday night. We'll also have a chat about Game three of the women's State of Origin series, the Queenslanders salvaging some pride with eighteen fourteen victory over the Blues at McDonald Jones Stadium in Newcastle played in front of another great crowd, which just goes to show the rise and rise of the women's game. So well done to all involved there. And in the NRL last night at Cogra twenty points to six the Dragons over the Newcastle Knights. We'll have a closer look at that for you as well. I don't know what happens with the Knights. I mean, Caln Ponger has had a great season, but jeez, they miss him. They just showed very little last night. Fletcher Sharp doesn't do it, no one else does for them, so they're just I don't know, just falling out completely out of contention. I know they probably weren't in it anyway, but they did win last week and it looked okay. But she was our average last night. The Dragons, to their credit, they keep they keep turning up. I mean, they could be way better off in this competition. They've lost three games by a point and they could be right up near the top. But they've they've done well with what they've got. Clint Gartherson just continues. You get the same effort from him week in week out. Clint Garthson, he's just a great, great player at club level. Probably should have played a bit more rep football, but didn't you know, I thought he was great. Thul Kyle Flanagan was good last night playing half back as well. So looked at a lot of good players. The big Loco Junior was it pacific at what about him again? He is a unit and he's only a boy, and he's going to get You would think he's going to get better and better. So I thought he was great. But they all played pretty well. I thought the night's very few of them I could think would walk away happy with what they dished up last night. But you know, after the State of Origin on Wednesday.

There wasn't much in the lead up from any of the coaches. Then you think that before, but it was pretty chill in the lead up, and then the crowd wasn't as vulgar as what they usually are. No one, no one, No one started a fight, like if you're down, if you're down by that much, do something, Queens do something. I thought was the only one that had a little bit of mongrel the whole game. To be honest, if you're not winning, go rowe l.
I really enjoyed the first half. The second half was a bit of a scrap that wasn't it.

At what point during the game did you ever think that Queensland was in control?
Never, you know, the only time where I was concidered.
Look, I've been there before, and I've seen it all before and been there, and I was a bit concerned when we're down to twelve men and Vou kicked the kick from the sideline to go in at fourteen to two, so only twolve points behind. With ten minutes the start of the second half, down to twelve men, I thought this could give some confidence, but they had they had nothing. They didn't threaten us at all, even with twall men, didn't really created the overlaps.
It was, It wasn't. It wasn't a real Queensland.
Luck performed that that I'm used to and obviously once he comes, once we're back to thirty on thirteen and that they'll never hope.

So when you got no field position, no room to play off the back of your forwards, it's very very hard for him.

It was a good first half performance, but yeah, you take any win once you get up there in Quinnway.
A few things to tidy up, you know, especially in that second half. But Gi, you must have been happy with some signs, especially some of the performance as individuals pay hass Zach Lomax Isaiah. There are a few standouts out there for the Blues.
Yeah, it was and in particular you mentioned pain like pain, didn't train at all during the week, and you know, we're unsure of whether he'd play or not, but he you know, day before the game he said he was right to go. So well done to the medical stuff. They got him right. So coming off of preparation to play fifty eight minutes and to play the way he did was Yeah, just a credit to him. And then Zach Lamax of course has only had one game back too from a broken foot, but he was able to put in a terrific effort. It's got to be better for game two as well.

It was absolutely outstanding. Obviously playing hassles me in the match. But Mits Barnette for me was a little bit of a long sung hero, particularly in the first half. And Isaiaho he look, he's known as a bit of a ballplan lock, but he sort of put the ballplane away partickl in the first half, just played like an extra middle.
I thought he was great as well.
Yeah, we sort of challenged the forwards a little bit gal just to be sort of playing straight and just to be sort of go out there and try and establish some dominance in the in the middle of the field. Sometimes when you get to an origin game. I know it's not everyone's cup of tea, but you know, we didn't look to move the ball. We just wanted to make sure we got into the contest early and found our way and found our rhythm and then sort of we were hoping that the game would open up a little bit, but they started strongly and that was that we spoke about. And you're right, Barney was terrific and Isaiah looked to run first instead of passing, and I thought he was a great captain's knock.
I actually wanted to ask you something quite similar was about, and it was about Yo's running game, but then also the trickle on effect. I thought we saw Cleary running a lot too, which was dangerous. But it wasn't that usual Penrith style or footy. It was a bit different. Was that the plan as well, like Cleary taking into consideration go into that game one.
Yeah, it was not so much not a Penrith plan, but it was more about the way we wanted to play. And we've been to Lang Park before and you know, it doesn't matter how you get a victory. Any victory up there is going to be tough and you can look pretty, but you can't come away with the points of time. So we just had to grind it out. We had to be tough and courageous. I thought we did that. Yeah, but looking back on the second half, we defended our line really well and I think we can get a lot better than what we were in game one.
Laurie, your former captain, Paul Gallon's made some big statements today on this show which you may or may not be happy with. One as he said, Queensland is and air Soft in general in general? Did you say that that's the crowd? And then he said the Queensland players are now scared of Spencer line.

It was a good, tough game of foot and as I said before, anytime you go up to Queensland to win, I mean, you know, history suggests that you know it was always going to be a tough battle because it was the first time we've on back to back games here in twenty seven years, so you know that's a that's a.
We now want three in a row, which is a pretty good effort. Not only just but I mean that won the last two last year and this one.
Yeah.
No, they're a pretty special group. But as we spoke about after the game, you've got to enjoy little milestones, but you can't get well, you can't take your mind away from what you need to do, and that's to win the series. So we got two more games that we need to be a lot better in than what we were in game one. And we all know that Corysland, where they've been pacing the face, they come back again, So yeah, it's not over by a long stretch, and will need to be better in game two.
Mat I was really pleased for Max King when he got on because he was sort of probably a little bit of a surprise selection, and you know, I think he was surprised he made the side, but I thought he was certainly wasn't there a place in that caliber.
Of football, was he? No?
I think his style of foot he really suits it. You know, he's not the flashest, flashiest of players, but what he does is very selfless like you look at his lines bured you look at the way he holds the middle together, look at when he makes it tackle, he gets back into the line, works hard from mark, does his job with the ball, He's always there in a kick chase, and all the little efforts that you talk about being origin players, that's what Max brings to a footy team. So we wanted to include including based on what we thought the game was going to be like and what he could provide to the team.

But I can't my head off to the players that have played this weekend and the players have played last night, because you know the amount of energy and effort they put into the game and what we do coaches where for togue, I can only imagine how they're fatigue mentally and physically as well. So yeah, they're they're brave, they're tough, and world done to them for backing up this weekend.
I reckon in between, in particularly so mentally. I mean physically, it's one of the hardest environments you can play in, but when you don't win that game, it is so mentally draining. And four homes to back up last night others would be effort by the young men.

I think it's it's it's so hard and the amount of emotion that goes into a contest like an Origin game. It's not like an NRL game. It's it's like a Grand final, and you know, to come back two days later and in the conditions that they're in last night, and you know the players are going to play today and they'll be stiff and sore, but they know the importance of playing well for their clubs, and the clubs help them get to where they are. So it's a responsibility of theirs to go back and play well and show those players in their team that the team colors mean something to them as well, not only playing and representing New South Wales of Pointsland, but the club is so important.

So it's not superstitious, but I just say, if you just didn't feel comfortable.

I thought early on both teams were trying to move the ball side of side nas I was very slippy out there. Wasn't until the fifteen twenty minute you guys decided to go through the middle and try to go through the nights, and you did that, and I've got to be honest, I thought it was on the back of your big, your big front row. I thought, you know, he's obviously at the back end of his career, be big clamor. But I thought it was outstanding last night.
No, he was, and he had a great game last night, and lade a really good platform and you're right, we both teams was quite fast at started was I saw the first twenty minutes before we got the first try. But we did get that off the back of you know, going back through the middle of him, which is what we wanted to do. But probably just sometimes when you think there's a bit of space out wide, you tend to chase that and go away from the game plan. So once we stuck to that, obviously put some points on but then and again in the second half we did the same sort of thing. So a bit to learn from that. But yeah, Clement's it's kind of has been great ever since he came to the club. Obviously an older head and you know we've got a lot of young forwards there, so he's leading by example and just around the training field as well.
Mate, I agree, I think he's been really good for you. But I thought last night was probably his best game in a few years. He I thought he was outstanding last night. Now, you Blakes have now stuck into the eighth, which is nice because you probably deserved to be there even though you've been like every other club, you've been a bit inconsistent at times, but in generally you've had a been a pretty good season.

Hey, cookie, one bloke, I want to ask you about Nathan Lawson. I've watched him play a fair bit of rugby. He obviously comes from the seven program, Seven's programs before he came over. He gave a pretty good nightge last night. The clocked up some meters, but he sort of played his role in rugby seven's was always that edge forward, so because he does have that bigger body, and he's obviously really good at defending one oh one and he's got that pace. But what's he been like around the club.
Oh, he's been greater around the club. And ye know he's played on the biggest stage in the Olympics a couple of times now and I thought he stood up for the challenges. It's pretty impressive what he's done going from a sevens game where obviously I mean seven on the field, coming to where there's thirteen guys line up, you know, shoulder and shoulder wanted to bash you as you run out of the yardage, and I thoughted you a really good job of you know, when Elson kicks his way. He did well to get across to the middle and beat a couple of players and get us out of that corner. So and got our sets off to a really good start. And he's got some paces, got some size, Like he said, he makes his tackles and really did his job last night and it was a great day.

Yeah, I was reading the paper this morning. I knew nothing about this, but in a little section they said about one of the aust Australian lady had passed away in the States, lady by the name Julie Fitzsimon's, who was actually the head of the Nicole Fitzsimon's Foundation. Now, Nicole worked on the Footy Show when I was there years ago, long time ago, and Nicole unfortunately was killed in a motorbike accident over and I think it was in Thailand at the end well, in one of the off seasons of the rugby league, and she was with a partner and was hit. She'd think they were on a motorbike and she passed away on that anyway, I was reading the paper today and her mum is Julie. She actually was apparently hit by a car in America when they were on holidays and she passed away as well. So it's a really sad time. I did a bit of stuff with the Nicole Fitzsimon's Foundation and they are a great foundation, and quite ironically it was about people traveling safely when they're overseas and I'm so sorry to hear that the Julie's passed away as well. Vince her husband, I think Kate's the daughter. It's just just horrific both, you know, the daughter and the mother have now passed from excellence on the rail and you know she's a great woman and did so much good stuff. So it's a really sad day for anyone who knew them. Was she was like Nicole was? I think Glenn Pallaster's who was the you the boss of the footy show, his pa I think and it's just a terrible, terrible bit of news that I heard.
Yeah, that's awful, and we're obviously sending out deepest sympathies and condolences to those family members morning the passing of Julian and I'm assuming Darrel, back in those days of the Footy Show, you were like a bit of a family, everyone that worked on the show and both on our end off it.
Yeah, well you probably we did spend a fair bit of time together, you know, and I suppose you do it, Gal, I meant you guys, you know, the Channel nine family at the moment, but on a particular show like that, you were a bit of a family and we all got on really well. And we were devastated when we found out Nicole was killed overseas because she was just such a young, vibrant young girl and had a whole life for ahead of it, you know, and then for Julie to be you know, taken like this as well. She only text me like about I think it was May of the twelfth she texted me. She said they were going on a cruise and she want to go on the trip to to Vegas. I'm taking a trip as well, like you are. This year or next year, I should say, because they've made dragon supporters and want to go and support the dragons. And I well, I read this morning. To be honest, I couldn't believe it. I rang a couple of people run Plaster and a few other people and they confirmed it. So it's a really it's a really sad down there, terrible, really sad.

Honestly, it's the best because also I think what that game invites the kickoffs a little bit earlier, but there are so many kids in the crowd. There was over there was nearly twenty two thousand.
