Experience the key for Maguire to handling intense Broncos scrutiny

Brisbane coach Michael Maguire has opened up on how the club has overcome the intense scrutiny on them this week, after the Broncos demolished the Titans 44-14 on Saturday night at home.

Well, last night the Brisbane Broncos snapped a four game losing streak, crushing the Gold Coast Titans forty four fourteen in front of almost forty thousand fans at sun Corp Stadium. It was a special night for the club, celebrating captain Adam reynolds three hundredth game and a pressure relieving victory for Brisbane to recap at all. One man who we always love having on the show is the coach of the Brisbane Broncos, and that's Michael maguire. And I'm police to say Michael joins us on the line. Get a Michael, how are you mate?

Yea, a guys, thanks having me.

Well, it's a big night for the club at home yesterday and you made a statement in the first half to set that all up, didn't you.

Yeah, it was. It was a brilliant night obviously to be able to celebrate Renots three hundreds. We had a fairly flash jumper representing a great cause. It was a special night. Under just sort of be out of coach Reno at his first game and then all of a sudden you catch him in his three hundreds. Quite amazing as a coach to be.

Honest, Michael's Neil Breen. Obviously it goes without saying, how are you mate? There's been lots of pressure on up there and the form has been a little bit patchy. Was there anything different in the last week. Was it the fact that they had something to play for with Adam Reynolds? Was it your fullback Rece Walsh coming back that made the difference.

I think all that plays apart Brannie. Obviously we'd have been probably disappointed obviously over the last sort of month where we had opportunities where we could have taken games. But when you have someone like recy Walsh, you know, Ezra has been back now for a couple of weeks. Yeah, they're finding their form. I think against South as an example, like we made nine line breaks and we didn't capitalize. And when you've got people like Reci and Ezra on the field, every time you saw a break there last night knowing near by, so those things really help you. But you know, we we've gone through a fair bit over the last month and looked at how we're doing things and you know, I've been really pleased. Without the senior players, we've got a hold of what we're doing and the coaching staff and everyone stuck together. You know, I've got a very tight unit as a team. The staff have been great orbe we didn't get the results, we've been harder, and we were able to find that last night. Neil going to really bounce from that.

Reese's form was a bit patchy early in the season, he had that time off with the knee injury.

In that time.

Did you work with him a lot about today It looked like he was trying too hard or something. Then last night it all came together for him.

Yeah.

The games are all different, you know. I think in some of the games there early days, I mean, he spent a lot of time defending. We created a lot of dramas seeing it because they dropped ball and through effort, we're probably forcing errors and things like that to end up having to be planned on our line. So Ruth did a lot more defense through that time. He actually became a very good indicator of where people needed to go defensively. So we had a lot of practice. But last night we were able to capitalize on everyone being focused on their role and we got a roll on. So that's something that when this team gets going, they definitely take.

Off mage, it's pig here.

You going, good, biggie? How we are mane good mate mate.

You know one of the players in your team game at Shibasaki story over the preseason. Can you give us a little bit of an insight into how that all came about.

Yeah, it's actually a really good story. Look, he turned up for trying and trial sort of contracted. He's been around a little bit. He played earlier in his career at the Broncos and then when overseas and played in Japan and landed back. And I remember in his first training session made he was probably a little bit like yourself, where he was a bit underdone and himself going. And then look to his credit, he put his head down like you did, and you know, he got himself fit. And it's great to see him through the things he's doing because he's he's twenty seven, and he's very mature around where he's at, and he's added a lot to the group, you know, And I was his journey and his story about what he's been through. I was helped through this sort of month. You know, you've got to work hard, and he's a great example of someone that's put his head down and from where he was from day one to where he is now. It's a great achievement, but he wants more. He's a very hungry, hungry player.

But how have you handled the last seven or eight weeks? I mean it's been really tough and we're down in Sydney and we hear about the Broncos a lot down here, but it'll be ten filed up there for you. How have you handled the pressure of all this criticism and expectation and all that stuff.

Yeah, there those probably a little bit of experiences give me then, you know, coaching's taking me on many a journey. But I guess the one thing I do know is that they're focusing on what's right and what you need to go towards. And I've got a planing group. Yeah, we're all hitting in a direction to make sure the club's great. And each day they all turn up and with the players they come in and they bring plenty of energy in the way they try, so it's actually really enjoyable to come to work. And that's the main thing that you've got to focus on all where we want results. But we're also at a club that makes plenty of noise and you just sort of them myself personally, But I'll just focus on what needs to happen and look after the players and the staff.

But it's never easy dropping a player, but dropping someone like Selwyn Cobbo. I know Seln Cobbo, but I know him from a distance and watching him, and he's a great talent. Look, I'm trying to put this as nice as I can. I thought he had a shocking game the week before when you played mainly, and I don't expect you to comment on that. He didn't seem to be part of this game. He did what, didn't look interested and you dropped him last night. I mean it takes a few cohoonas to do that for a big name like him. Yeah.

Well, I mean you got to know what you're stand for, I guess, and focus on the expectations and the training of what everyone's doing. And I've always been that way, Daryl mcaching is that you know you're picking on performance, and if a guy performs, you give him a go. You know, I just saw he's been performing well in the reserve graide and obviously Sell needs to work on a few things, so you know, you just got to make that change when required.

Might seem trivial to talk about this, Michael. We're dealing with the issues of the form of the team and everything, but I got to say those black jerseys were spectacular. They were they were fantastic.

Yeah, they were. Actually the club's done a great job there and obviously supporting a really good cause too, and the mental health I mean, it's real, it's around us, and I think it allowed everyone to put a little bit more of a focus on what it really is, and those jerseys definitely represented it really well. And they've always very proud to be able to wear those jerseys because it represents something that many are facing in life at the moment. So we're able to reach out to get the people through that cause. Well, I think it was a good.

One, Yeah, Catania. I saw Katani Stagg's interviewed, I think it was after the game about it, and he spoke beautifully, you know, just trying to say what it was all about.

In the background, Daryl, sorry there just yeah. I mean all the boys have they've sort of really gone out of their way to make sure that they can get the word out there about being able to get out and talk and look after people. Because I'm sure many of us are at some stage and face something of tragedy in that space.

Made are you going to give desert ring because you seem to have passed the baton onto him up there with regards for the pressure button.

Yeah, we do. We do chat every now and then between this and I AM.

A great game, isn't it? Great?

Good rugby league?

Oh my god?

Well thanks for your time, Matte. You got the bye next week maybe, but forty four points to fourteen a really good victory by you, guys. And thanks for your time this afternoon.

Yeah, thanks, boys, always appreciate that on me, Thanks Ellis.

Thanks Michael Madam.

But by there
