STORY 1:   Volunteers sought for Great American Cleanup 

Keep Newton Beautiful (KNB) seeks volunteers for the Great American Cleanup on Saturday, March 29, starting at 9 a.m. at Longhorn Steakhouse in Covington. Volunteers will receive biscuits, water, t-shirts (first 500 registrants), gloves, and garbage bags. The event aims to raise awareness about litter prevention and improve the community. Participants can clean up roadsides, parks, or other areas, with suggested locations provided by KNB. Groups with children are advised to avoid busy roads. KNB also offers litter prevention programs, including the popular Detective Seymore Green puppet show, to promote community responsibility. 

STORY 2:     Madison Passes New Leash Law For Dogs In Public 

Madison's City Council unanimously passed a stricter dog leash law on March 10, requiring all dogs to be leashed in public areas, except dog parks and private property. The new law closes a loophole that allowed unleashed dogs if they obeyed verbal commands. Prompted by public support and citizen feedback, the ordinance mandates leashing on sidewalks, roads, trails, parks, and more. Council members, including Eric Joyce and Betsy Wagenhauser, praised the community's input in shaping the legislation, which aims to enhance safety and accountability. 

STORY 3:  Robinson named new fire chief in Rockdale 

Rockdale County has appointed James “Jimmy” Robinson as the new chief of its Fire Rescue Service. Previously deputy chief and interim chief, Robinson succeeds Marian McDaniel, who resigned last month. With 21 years of fire and EMS experience, Robinson has served in multiple counties and was named Georgia Chief Fire Officer of the Year in 2022. At the Board of Commissioners meeting, Robinson pledged to enhance public safety, strengthen community relations, and lead with transparency. A member of Rockdale Fire Rescue since 2008, he holds numerous certifications and bachelor’s degrees in Fire Services and Fire Protection Engineering.

STORY 4:  'Trash Bag' Of Suspected Marijuana Confiscated 

Madison Police arrested 18-year-old Xavier Ahmad Marshall on March 2 after a traffic stop for speeding at 91 mph on I-20. Officer Charles Coats detected the smell of marijuana from Marshall's car, leading to the discovery of a trash bag containing approximately four pounds of marijuana in vacuum-sealed bags. A black airsoft pistol with a painted-over safety tip was also found under the driver’s seat. Marshall faces charges including felony marijuana possession, intent to distribute, speeding, and a seat belt violation. 

STORY 5:   NCSO: Woman found in lake a murder victim; Walton County man arrested 

Travis Abbott, 53, of Walton County, has been arrested for the murder of his ex-girlfriend, Collette Sease, 54, whose body was found in a private lake in Newton County on March 3. Initially investigated as a possible drowning, authorities later determined it was a homicide. Abbott is accused of killing Sease and concealing her body in the lake off Ga. Highway 212. The Newton County Sheriff’s Office, with assistance from the GBI and Walton County Sheriff’s Office, made the arrest on March 10. The lake is located in a wooded area near Ga. Highway 212 and Gibson Way.
