Story 1: Vance, Walz debate economy, immigration, abortion in tight presidential race
In a debate hosted by CBS News, U.S. Sen. J.D. Vance and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz clashed over key issues like the economy, immigration, and abortion, with both defending their running mates, Trump and Harris, respectively. Walz criticized Trump for past controversies, while Vance attacked the Biden-Harris administration's handling of issues like energy and immigration. The debate touched on recent Middle East tensions, with both candidates discussing U.S. foreign policy. Vance emphasized his humble beginnings and criticized economic policies, while Walz focused on union support and criticized Trump's tax policies. The debate also covered topics like gun violence, healthcare, and the aftermath of the 2020 election.
Story 2: The 54th Annual Freedom Fund Banquet Of The Morgan NAACP To Be Held This October
The Morgan County NAACP is hosting its 54th Annual Freedom Fund Banquet on October 26, 2024, at 6:30 p.m. at the Morgan County High School Cafeteria, themed "All In." The event will feature Pastor Nathan Durham of Flat Rock Baptist Church as the speaker. Pastor Durham, originally from Monroe, Ga., has a rich history in ministry, having led multiple churches and founded New Beginnings Bible Church. Known for his community involvement and global outreach, Pastor Durham is currently studying at Luther Rice College and Seminary. The NAACP invites everyone to join the celebration and thanks supporters for their continued backing. Tickets are available through the NAACP office or members.
Story 3: Federal probe finds deplorable conditions inside Georgia prisons
The U.S. Justice Department announced that Georgia's prison system is violating inmates' constitutional rights by failing to protect them from widespread violence. A 94-page report from a multi-year investigation revealed systemic issues, including understaffing, poor infrastructure, and gang control, leading to violence, assault, and neglect. The report highlights the state's indifference to inmate safety and calls for urgent reforms. Georgia, with the fourth-largest state prison population, is taking steps to address these issues, including hiring a consultant and forming legislative committees to improve prison conditions. The Justice Department urges cooperation to ensure humane conditions.

Story 4: Georgia voters to decide tax-related ballot questions
On November 5, Georgia voters will decide on two tax-related constitutional amendments and a statewide referendum focused on property tax relief. One amendment proposes capping local residential property tax assessment increases to the rate of inflation, with an opt-out option for local governments. This aims to prevent unexpected tax hikes due to rising home values. Another measure would raise the personal property tax exemption from $7,500 to $20,000, benefiting small businesses. Additionally, a proposed amendment seeks to establish a tax court in Georgia, staffed by judges with tax expertise, similar to the Statewide Business Court created in 2018.
Story 5: Cherokee Seeking More Input on Greenways and Trails Master Plan
Cherokee County is hosting a second round of public input meetings in October for its Greenways and Trails Master Plan. The plan aims to create a cohesive trail network by identifying potential locations, prioritizing connections, and allocating funding. The public can review and provide feedback on the draft trail network. Opportunities for input include in-person events at Canton First Friday, The Great Pumpkin Fest, and two open houses, as well as a virtual meeting on October 30. These sessions allow residents to engage with planners and provide feedback to refine the plan.
