These projects aim to enhance parks and sidewalks across the state. One of the recipients is the city of Oxford, which will receive $2.2 million for the Soule Street Multi-use Trail Project. The grants, totaling up to $2.2 million each, will be awarded to eligible nonprofits and local governments in low-income census tracts. The funds will be used to improve or maintain recreational facilities, as well as repair parks and sidewalks that have experienced increased wear and tear during the pandemic. This investment aims to support the recovery efforts of communities heavily impacted by the pandemic. districts The Conyers City Council has approved new election districts for the city, pending final approval on June 7. The changes are based on the 2020 Census and aim to ensure compliance with the one-person, one-vote principle. City Attorney Carrie Bootcheck explained that the previous districts had slight imbalances, with a deviation of 11.3% from equal population distribution, exceeding the 10% allowance. The proposed plan would reduce the deviation to 1.4%. The redrawn districts maintain their majority-minority status, with the highest minority population percentage in District 1 at 76%, well below the 80% limit set by law. The funds will be used to enhance year-round programming and research services for students, teachers, researchers, and the public. The success of the fundraising campaign is attributed to the efforts of the festival committee, corporate sponsors, and individual donors. The Georgia Historical Society provides educational programs, teacher training, research services, and maintains a vast collection of archival materials related to Georgia's history. The festival reached over 250,000 K-12 students, 2,614 teachers, and nearly 34,000 members of the public through various events and resources. The festival concluded with the Trustees Gala, honoring outstanding individuals who have made significant contributions to Georgia. Rebecca Jean Cortez, 71, was cited for DUI following the incident recently. Georgia State Patrol reports indicate that Cortez was driving the golf cart on Waterstone Drive when it slid and tilted onto its passenger side. Cortez and a male passenger in the front seat were taken to Piedmont Athens Hospital, while two other passengers were transported to Piedmont Athens Regional Hospital. According to reports, Cortez claimed to have lost control of the vehicle when it began shaking. The results of a blood alcohol test are pending.….. Story 6:  Directors Cup Westminster, Marist, and Wesleyan emerged as the winners in their respective classifications in the 2022-23 Director's Cup standings, a recognition by the Georgia Athletic Directors Association for high school sports success. Westminster secured their 13th consecutive and 22nd overall Director's Cup in Class AAAA, with state championships in six sports contributing to their total points. Marist clinched the Class AAAAAA Director's Cup for the third consecutive year and 22nd time overall, while Wesleyan claimed their sixth consecutive and 12th overall Director's Cup in Class AAA. Break 1:  Drake STORY 1: domestic A domestic incident on Memorial Day resulted in the death of one man and the arrest of another in Newton County. Ja'quavious Lackey, 19, was shot and later died at a local hospital. Jacarie Justice, 20, was arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter. The shooting occurred during a child custody exchange, with Justice being the brother of the child's mother and Lackey being the child's father. The Newton County Sheriff's Office responded to the incident on East Lawn Way in Covington. Further details about the case have not been provided at this time. STORY 2: rodeo The Rockdale County Board of Commissioners held a public hearing regarding a special use permit for the development of an entertainment and exhibition venue on Hightower Trail. The applicants, Brandon and Fidel Cabrera, seek to operate an outdoor rodeo and recreation facility on the site. The Rockdale County Planning Commission recommended denial of the request, citing concerns about zoning, development standards, animal safety, and environmental risks. The Board of Commissioners outlined 27 conditions under which the permit could be approved. They will make a final decision on June 13 and continue to accept questions and concerns until then. The proposed conditions address various restrictions, including zoning compliance, setback standards, and signage limitations. The applicants have previously held rodeos on the site and plan to host three additional shows. Story 3 : 3 arrested Three suspects have been arrested, and a fourth suspect is being sought in connection with a shooting incident that occurred on April 3 in Newton County. Deputies responded to a shooting in the Wildcat Creek Estates subdivision, where they found 20-year-old Braxton Singleton dead inside his vehicle. Another 21-year-old man, who was seriously injured, was dropped off at a hospital. The Newton County Sheriff's Office has obtained a murder warrant for a third man, Julius Dennis, who was also shot during the incident. Information on Dennis's whereabouts should be reported to Investigator Joshua Hicks at 678.625.1455.......back in a moment BREAK 2:  ESOG 60 -  Detox Mom Story 4: Gallery The Madison Artists Guild Gallery is hosting its 2023 Annual Meeting of Membership on June 9, followed by the opening reception for the "Home Is..." juried show featuring work from 27 regional artists. The public is invited to attend the meeting and the catered reception with live music. The exhibition will be on display until July 8. STORY 5:  awards Living Life Team, Inc. has awarded scholarships to graduating seniors from Morgan County High School. The scholarship, worth $1,000, is given annually, and this year the application process required attending a Living Life Team support group meeting and submitting an essay on coping with blindness. In 2023, three students applied, and their exceptional performance led the Board of Directors to make a special decision. Peyton Triplett received the $1,000 scholarship, while Trinity Sanders and Natalie Ross were each awarded $500 scholarships. This recognition highlights their achievements and contributions. Story 6: camp Morgan County High School Basketball Head Coach Cody Anderson has announced the "Hoop Dogs Basketball Camp," scheduled from June 5 to June 9. The camp is open to children from rising second to eighth grade and will focus on fundamentals and fun. It will take place from 8:30 a.m. to noon each day, with drop-off available at 8 a.m. at the Morgan County High Competition Gym. The camp will offer daily competitions, fundamental practices, live games, and an awards ceremony. Each camper will receive a commemorative T-shirt, and there will be a camp store on-site. She told Madison Police Department officers she had fired a shot at the man. Reid, the father of Keeley's child, had a no contact order against him but continued to harass her. Keeley filmed Reid with her phone when he approached her residence, and he left. However, he returned, prompting Keeley to pull out a pistol. Reid told Keeley to use the gun if she had pulled it out, and she fired a single round, later finding a suspected bullet hole near where she fired. Reid fled and was apprehended by officers, resisting arrest and taking a Taser weapon from an officer. Reid faced charges including aggravated stalking, disarming a police officer, terroristic threats, and felony obstruction. 2: Merritt Disbarred lawyer Richard Merritt, known for being a wanted criminal on the run, has been sentenced to life in prison without parole for the murder of his mother, Shirley Merritt, in 2019. A DeKalb County jury found him guilty of murder, aggravated assault, and possessing a weapon during the crime. Prior to the murder, Merritt had been facing a 15-year prison sentence for stealing settlement money from his clients. However, he cut off his ankle monitor and became a fugitive. Merritt's nationwide manhunt ended after eight months when he was captured by the U.S. Marshals Service in Nashville. His murder trial concluded last week. 3: Moore Travis Moore, a seventh generation Covington resident, has announced his candidacy for the East Ward, Post 2 seat on the Covington City Council. The incumbent, Fleeta Baggett, will not seek re-election. Moore, who lives in the East Ward with his wife and three dogs, has a background in real estate and is involved in various businesses, including a vacation rental company and a fitness center. He previously worked as a firefighter and EMT. Moore's main concern is the ongoing increase in multi-family and large single-family developments in Covington……..Back with more in a moment Commercial: ESOG- Ingles 7         4: Chattahoochie The Sandy Springs Police Department has announced the transformation of its River Rescue Unit into a River Patrol Unit, resulting in increased police presence on the Chattahoochee River. Starting from Memorial Day weekend, the newly-formed unit will patrol the river between Island Ford and The Palisades, aiming to enforce laws, deter criminal activity, and promote safety in Sandy Springs. The unit, consisting of two sergeants and nine officers, intends to reduce drownings and educate river users on safety practices. Meanwhile, the Sandy Springs Fire Department will continue to operate the River Rescue Unit.. Hotels are now permitted in the General Commercial (C3) zoning district, and the height restrictions for hotels in C3 have been raised from 35 feet to 45 feet. The decision was influenced by a proposed hotel project by Fairfield Inn and Suites. The addition of hotels aims to meet regional needs, attract businesses and visitors, stimulate the economy, create jobs, generate tax revenue, and enhance property values. Break 1:  Drake STORY 1: Shot In Covington, Georgia, a police officer was shot and a suspect was killed in a shooting incident at a local hotel. The incident occurred after officers responded to a 911 call at the My Home & Suites Hotel on Tuesday night. Upon arrival, one officer encountered a man, later identified as Treyvorius Stodghill, who was armed inside one of the hotel rooms. An exchange of gunfire took place, resulting in the officer being shot. Another officer arrived at the scene and witnessed Stodghill pointing a gun at the injured officer. The second officer shot and killed Stodghill. The injured officer, who was shot in the head, was transported to Grady Hospital in Atlanta and is expected to survive. The Covington Police Department has requested prayers and support for their colleague and his family during this time. Check back at rockdalenewtoncitizen.com for updates on this story. STORY 2: Suspects A shooting incident in the Fountain Crest subdivision has resulted in the death of a man who was shot in the head. The Rockdale County Sheriff's Office has identified two suspects in connection with the shooting. Ryan Mulqueen, aged 19, has been arrested with the help of the New York Police Department. However, the second suspect, Mikle Talyzin, aged 28, is still at large. The incident occurred on May 13th when deputies responded to a call reporting a "trouble unknown" situation on Fountain Crest Drive. They discovered a 45-year-old man inside the residence who had been shot in the head three times. Despite being taken to the hospital, he passed away over the weekend. The Sheriff's Office expressed gratitude for the assistance received in the investigation and confirmed that they are actively looking into the case. If you have information on there whereabouts of Talyzin, please contact the Rockdale County Sheriffs office Story 3 Accident  A tragic single-vehicle crash in Putnam County claimed the life of a woman from Morgan County. Julie Sims Simpson, aged 54, was pronounced dead at the scene. The crash occurred when a 2021 Subaru Forester, driven by her husband Gabriel David Simpson, aged 57, overturned in a ditch on Lower Harmony Road. The vehicle was discovered by a Putnam County Sheriff's Office deputy. Initial investigations suggest that the vehicle was traveling towards U.S. 441 and failed to negotiate a curve, resulting in the loss of control and overturning. Julie Simpson was found still strapped into the passenger seat, while Gabriel Simpson was discovered inside the vehicle on the roof. The exact time of the incident is yet to be determined, but it is believed they had been in the vehicle for a couple of hours. Gabriel Simpson was transported to a hospital, and no charges have been filed as the accident remains under investigation......back in a moment BREAK 2:  ESOG 60 -  Ingles 4 Story 4: Fire Morgan County's Fire Chief, Jeff Stone, has announced his retirement and will officially step down on June 2nd. After 29 years in the fire service and public safety, Stone has decided to conclude his career as the Fire Chief for Morgan County Fire Rescue, a role he has held for the past 7.5 years. Stone's journey in the fire service began as a volunteer for the Walton County Fire Department, and he steadily advanced through the ranks, ultimately retiring as a battalion chief overseeing 25 personnel and handling 4,000 calls annually. Throughout his tenure as Fire Chief, Stone has been a passionate advocate for resources, equipment, and training for firefighters. He expressed gratitude for the exceptional men and women of Morgan County Fire Rescue and the unwavering support from the citizens of Morgan County. Stone acknowledged the progress made in enhancing the fire service but advised that the next chief must continue to advocate for the department to meet the county's growing public safety needs. STORY 5:  ride Ride for America, a patriotic motorcycle parade organized by the American Legion, will roll through Madison on Memorial Day, May 29th. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the event, where hundreds of riders dressed in red, white, and blue participate in a parade from Loganville to Madison. The Ride for America aims to honor fallen veterans and their families. The ceremony will take place at Madison's Town Park, beginning at 11 a.m. once the motorcycles arrive and encircle the park. The event is free and open to the public, with attendees encouraged to dress patriotically and bring lawn chairs. The Ride for America supports various veterans-related causes, including scholarships, veteran assistance, and supplies for hospitalized veterans. Harvey was carrying a long rifle in his hands, had two rifles strapped to his body, and had two handguns tucked into his waistband. The board, in collaboration with the State Road and Tollway Authority (SRTA), has given the green light to the first phase of projects, which includes constructing grade-separated interchanges at the intersections of Georgia 316 with Bethlehem and Barber Creek roads in Barrow County. The Georgia Department of Transportation (DOT) plans to issue a request for proposals from contractors in July, with the bidding process concluding in December. Construction is expected to commence in the fall of the following year. Break 1:  Drake STORY 1:Drug charges Stacey Cotton, the longest-serving police chief in the Atlanta area, has announced his retirement after nearly 37 years with the Covington Police Department. Cotton, who has been chief for over 25 years, will transition to a new role in the private sector, working in land development with Premier Petroleum Hospitality. The department will undergo a leadership transition, but Cotton is confident in the competence of the existing leaders. Under his guidance, the Covington Police Department achieved international accreditation and state certification. Cotton's distinguished career includes participating in international law enforcement programs, such as combating terrorism in Israel and collaborating with London police for the 2012 Olympics. He holds multiple degrees and has actively served on various boards and community programs. STORY 2: Schools The Rockdale County Sheriff's Office is seeking two men believed to be involved in a shooting in the Fountain Crest subdivision. Deputies responded to a call and discovered a 45-year-old man with three gunshot wounds to the head. The victim was transported to a hospital in critical condition. The RCSO Criminal Investigations Division is actively investigating the incident, and anyone with information is urged to contact Investigator Levett or submit tips anonymously. The Sheriff's Office emphasizes that the investigation is still ongoing, and the released information is preliminary and subject to change. Story 3 Arrested Rockdale County has appointed Juliana Njoku as the new director for Planning and Development. The appointment was made during the county's Board of Commissioners voting session on May 9. With this new role, Njoku will oversee the planning and development initiatives in Rockdale County. Her appointment highlights the county's commitment to effective management and strategic growth. Njoku brings her expertise and experience to the position, and her leadership is expected to contribute to the development and progress of Rockdale County......back in a moment BREAK 2:  ESOG 60 Story 4: Walk The Walk of Heroes Memorial Day Ceremony is scheduled for May 29 at 11 a.m. at the Walk of Heroes Veterans War Memorial. The keynote speaker for the event will be Maj. Gen. Les J. Carroll, a retired U.S. Army officer. The ceremony will also feature musical selections performed by the 116th Army Band. This event serves as a meaningful tribute to honor and remember the sacrifices of veterans and fallen heroes. Attendees can expect a solemn and patriotic gathering that pays tribute to those who have served their country. The ceremony promises to be a poignant and memorable event for all who attend. STORY 4: Audit Nelson Heights Community Services Inc. has been given until mid-June to address deficiencies in its audit in order to receive funding from Newton County this fiscal year. The non-profit organization, which offers after-school and other programs for children in the Nelson Heights community, was allocated $38,800 in the county's budget for fiscal year 2023. However, concerns emerged during a three-year audit covering 2017 to 2021, causing a hold on the appropriation. The county board mandated the audit requirement for organizations receiving funding. The Nelson Heights audit raised red flags, leading to a delay in the organization's appropriations until the issues are resolved. The county will cover operational costs for the Nelson Heights Community Center building during this period. After three generations of ownership, the property was sold to the Madison-Morgan Conservancy in 2022. Since then, the Conservancy has stabilized the building, restored its original layout, and uncovered the original beaded board walls. The Fairplay School features a unique 2-room floor plan with spacious rooms, high ceilings, large windows, and original heart pine floors. The property is located on a 1.88-acre lot in the peaceful community of Fairplay, near Rutledge and Hard Labor Creek State Park in Morgan County. The Conservancy is now seeking a preservation buyer to complete the remaining rehabilitation work and ensure the long-term protection of this historically significant resource for future generations. The behavioral health crisis center, funded by the county and the state, is set to open next year. Pitts also announced a new mobile app called Fulton Cares that will serve as a "one-stop-shop" for all health and human services funded by Fulton County. Other projects mentioned include a new primary care clinic in East Point, investments in water infrastructure, and a new elections hub. Pitts also addressed the recent closure of two hospitals in central and south Fulton County and the resulting healthcare disparity. Puppy Puppy Haven Brookhaven is hosting its sixth annual Party for the Paws fundraiser on May 20 from noon to 3 p.m., benefiting the Atlanta Humane Society. This free, family-friendly event features live music, food trucks, adoptable dogs, raffle prizes, and a pet costume contest. Nashville-based singer-songwriter Jordan Berry will perform at the event, and local celebrity judges, including former The Bachelorette star Josh Murray and 11Alive sports reporter Maria Martin, will judge the costume contest. Last year's fundraiser had over 500 attendees and raised $9,500 for Royal Animal Refuge. Captured A woman who escaped from police custody at Piedmont Henry Hospital was captured the same day by the Henry County Sheriff's Office. Quasha Harris, 38, was arrested and charged with escape, and her mother, Antionette Harris, is being detained as a person of interest. Harris was in court facing charges for theft by shoplifting and failure to appear when she was taken into custody and experienced a medical emergency. She was transported to Henry Piedmont Hospital where she escaped from custody. The HCSO conducted an extensive search, which resulted in Harris being captured in Atlanta by the HCSO. Commercial:  Drake STORY 1:Drug charges Masi Lenard Fears has been charged with distribution of a controlled substance resulting in serious bodily injury or death for selling a lethal combination of fentanyl and xylazine, also known as "tranq." The use of "tranq" in the community is concerning, as it is a powerful sedative used by veterinarians, and its addition to fentanyl increases drug dealers' profits. Fears allegedly sold the powder to two men who believed they were buying cocaine or heroin, but one of them died quickly, and the other suffered serious injuries. The charges were brought by the U.S. Attorney's Office and investigated by the DEA and Conyers Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas Forsyth is prosecuting the case. STORY 2: Schools Residents of Newton County in Georgia will vote in a November referendum to increase the homestead exemption for senior citizens on school district property taxes. If approved, the referendum would increase the total school district homestead exemption for senior citizens to $50,000, subject to some income restrictions. This would provide much-needed tax relief to eligible senior residents, who already receive certain property tax exemptions based on age and income requirements. The Newton County Board of Education approved a resolution in December to increase the homestead exemption for seniors after hearing from many residents who requested the tax relief. Story 3 Arrested A woman reported to Morgan County Dispatch that William Brady Smith had threatened to kill her and himself with a gun during a domestic argument on May 7. She had managed to take the gun away from him and flee. Deputies found Smith driving a pickup truck and arrested him on charges of stalking, battery, and DUI. The woman had noticed that one of her dogs was missing and later found that Smith had parked his truck in her barn behind her residence. Deputies found three loaded ammunition magazines and an open box of beer in Smith's truck. He was also charged with criminal trespass and open container violations. STORY 3: Piedmont Story 4 Piedmont Piedmont Rockdale has launched its Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DE&I) Council to represent a broad range of people from different social and ethnic backgrounds throughout the metro-Atlanta community. The council's mission statement includes a commitment to a diverse, inclusive and engaging environment for patients and staff. Jo Anne Hill, the executive director, oversees the council and hosted the launch, which was attended by 60 people. The council's priorities include increasing minority representation in leadership, improving access to education and training in connection with DE&I programs, and making community connections in support of Piedmont's purpose to make a positive difference. The teachers of the year were Lynn Kirkpatrick, Miranda Johnson, Elizabeth Barnes, and Jenny Cofield. STORY 6:  Awards Christine Lambert, a leading preservationist, volunteer, and philanthropist in Madison, has been recognized with the Camille W. Yow Volunteer of the Year Award by the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation. Lambert, who became involved in the Trust over 40 years ago, has served in multiple capacities and chaired numerous committees. She has also grown the organization’s base of support and maintained an endowment to support Georgia Trust programs. Lambert's impact on historic preservation, particularly in Madison, has been significant, and she has been honored previously with the Mary Gregory Jewett Award in 2015. The Georgia Trust has recognized individuals and preservation projects for over 45 years. Commercial STORY 1:No to alcohol The Newton County Board of Commissioners has voted 4-1 to deny the city of Covington’s request to allow open containers of alcoholic beverages in the Covington Square park. The city’s proposal for a 90-day trial period, allowing open containers only on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on designated sidewalks in the Downtown Consumption District, was unanimously approved by the council members. However, the county owns the park and therefore requires approval from the county for patrons to carry drinks through the park. Sheriff Ezell Brown endorsed waiting for the 90-day trial period to be over before making a decision on alcohol in the park. STORY 2:Rockdale RIF The Rockdale County Board of Education in Georgia has approved a reduction in force plan proposed by Superintendent Dr. Terry Oatts to make up for an anticipated $10.6 million budget shortfall. The plan aims to save a total of $5,308,738 and involves reducing central office positions through attrition, moving 30 paraprofessional positions from the general fund to an alternative funding source, relocating eight Central Office academic coaches and digital learning specialists back to schools, reducing school staffing points by 23, and freezing the work-based learning director position. No teachers or paraprofessionals will be eliminated. STORY 3: Inmate found dead The Newton County Sheriff's Office is investigating the death of William Roberts, a man who was found dead outside the Detention Center on April 26th. Roberts had been arrested on a charge of public intoxication on April 22nd and was released the next day after he had sobered up. According to the Sheriff's Office, Roberts did not leave the NCSO property when he was released and was found lying behind the NCSO entrance sign. It is unclear why he laid down there, and the cause of death is unknown at this time……we’ll have more on the Community Podcast after this! STORY 4:Ga Ct of Appeals The No2Rivian group's legal victory against Rivian's $15 billion bond validation and traditional property taxes was overturned by the Georgia Court of Appeals, dealing a major setback to the opposition. The State of Georgia and the Joint Development Authority are celebrating the ruling, while No2Rivian vows to appeal to the Georgia Supreme Court. The ruling confirmed that Rivian's project is sound, reasonable, and feasible and will create 7,500 new jobs, additional tax revenue, and supplier opportunities. Despite any further appeals, the State and JDA are confident that the Rivian project will proceed as planned. STORY 5: Conservancy The Madison-Morgan Conservancy's annual fundraiser, Derby Day, will debut the newly restored Foster-Thomason-Miller-Minnix House. Although the event is sold out, interested parties can join a waiting list in case of last-minute openings. The Foster-Thomason-Miller house was saved from destruction by the Conservancy's Endangered Properties Revolving Fund and restored by Elizabeth and David Minnix over five years with a preservationist ethic. Derby Day is the Conservancy's only annual fundraiser and supports the protection of farms, forests, and historic homes…..Stay with us, we’ll have more community news, and visit with Leah McGrath of Ingles right after this Commercial  Commercial  STORY 6:  CVIOG The Carl Vinson Institute of Government (CVIOG) at the University of Georgia has partnered with the Georgia Association of Convention & Visitors Bureaus (GACVB) to offer a new Destination Leadership program. This program will provide tourism education and training to city and county elected officials and staff. The first class, Fundamentals of Tourism, will be held in Madison on May 9. Participants will learn about the value of tourism as an economic driver and explore how to maximize tourism's impact on local economic development. The inaugural class will receive a tourism certificate upon completion of the course. Drugs or gang related activity are not believed to be the cause.  Several properties were approved to be removed from the Madison historic district.  The Rockdale Sheriff's Office has released information on a shooting involving a man who rammed his car into a police car.  Rockdale County and Senate delagation will hold a virtual town hall tonight on legislation that would change the number of commissioners.  And Morgan County baseball looks to keep improving, and will have a young pitcher take on a big roll. 

The eyes of the college basketball world are on Kennesaw State as the Owl's prepare for their first trip to the Men's NCAA Division 1 Basketball Tournament; Moulin Rouge!
