Story 1:   Civil Rights Groups Challenge Georgia Election Rule Changes

Civil and voting rights groups, including the ACLU of Georgia and the Southern Poverty Law Center, have filed a brief challenging recent change made by the State Election Board's Republican majority. These changes allow local officials to conduct inquiries and review documentation before certifying election results, which the groups argue could disrupt Georgia's election certification process and disenfranchise voters. The lawsuit, supported by the Democratic National Committee and the Democratic Party of Georgia, claims the new rules could create uncertainty and delay results, potentially impacting the upcoming elections. Georgia Republican Chairman Josh McKoon defends the changes as measures to enhance election integrity.

Story 2:  GHC Student Named a 2024 Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholar

Kara King, a student at Georgia Highlands College pursuing both an Associate and a bachelor’s in healthcare management, has been named a 2024 Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholar. This scholarship, part of a $210,000 program funded by the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation and Phi Theta Kappa, supports new Phi Theta Kappa members based on academic achievement, community service, and leadership potential. King, who found GHC to be the best fit for her studies and online learning needs, is thrilled about the award. She encourages involvement in campus organizations and emphasizes the value of returning to education.

Story 3:   Here’s Who’s Running for Office in Holly Springs

On November 5, Holly Springs voters will choose a new mayor from two candidates: Mark Aurand, a veteran in building construction, and Ryan Shirley, a small business owner and youth sports coach. Current Mayor Steven Miller, who has served since 2017, is not running for re-election. Ward 3 Councilmember Michael Roy Zenchuk II and Ward 5 City Councilmember Jeff Wilbur are running unopposed for re-election. The voter registration deadline is October 7, and early voting begins October 15. For more details, visit [Cherokee County Elections](https://cherokeegavotes.com).

Story 4:  Third Newton Student Charged with Making Threats

On September 10, a third Newton County School System student, an 11-year-old from Newton County STEAM Academy, was arrested for making terroristic threats. This follows two other student arrests for similar threats made on September 5 and 6. These incidents are reportedly inspired by the recent school shooting in Barrow County. Superintendent Dr. Duke Bradley III stressed that the school system is taking these threats seriously, emphasizing that any form of threatening behavior is prohibited and can result in severe legal consequences. Sheriff Ezell Brown urges the community to work together to prevent further threats and violence.

Story 5:  Kids Resale Market Scheduled For Downtown

On September 21, Clover Craft Studio will host a Kids Resale Market from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 159 S. Main St. This consignment sale offers a cost-effective way for families to purchase gently used children’s clothing and other items, while kids enjoy the studio’s playroom. The event, organized by studio owner Shannon Donald, who has a background in event planning and organizing, is a popular community fixture and will feature a variety of seasonal items. While vendor tables are fully booked, a waitlist is available. Future sales for winter and additional adult items are also planned. For more information, visit clovercraftstudio.com.

Story 6:  Trump Leading Harris in Georgia in Latest Poll

A recent Quinnipiac College poll shows former President Donald Trump leading Vice President Kamala Harris by 4 percentage points in Georgia, with Trump at 49% and Harris at 45%. Independent Cornel West and socialist Claudia De la Cruz each hold 1%. Trump leads among men and white voters, while Harris performs better with women and Black voters. Independents are evenly split. Georgia remains a key battleground state, having narrowly gone for Democrat Joe Biden in the 2020 election.

Story 7:  Board of Commissioners Denies Permit Request For RV Park

On September 10, the Rockdale County Board of Commissioners voted 2-0 to deny a special use permit for a proposed RV park and campground at 3260 East Fairview Road. Applicant Eugene West aimed to create a facility for military veterans, but the Conyers-Rockdale Planning Commission and residents raised concerns about traffic, environmental impact, and safety. The permit request had been opposed at multiple stages, including a public hearing on August 22. Chairman Oz Nesbitt was absent from the meeting where the decision was finalized.
