Today - The Brown Bombers, a group of Black Coloradans that got together to form a baseball team back in the 40’s.

Before we begin, let’s go back in time with some Colorado history adapted from historian Derek R Everett’s book “Colorado Day by Day”:

Today, we take you back to February 15th, 1904 when John F Shafroth resigned from the US house of representatives. He had been presented with evidence that his reelection in 1902 was fraudulent, and he resigned simply because it was the right thing to do. He earned the nickname Honest John for placing principle above his career.

And now, our feature story. 

In the late 1940s, a group of Black Coloradans gathered together to form a baseball team for the city league in Colorado Springs. At that time in history, playing baseball as a Black team was anything but easy. Colorado Sun contributor Carol McKinley spoke with staff writer Lucy Haggard on how the Brown Bombers, as they were called, excelled despite the odds.

The U.S. Census Bureau says states will likely not have their population data from 2020 until September 30. Colorado’s new independent redistricting commissions are required by law to deliver the new congressional districts by September 1 and the new legislative districts by September 15. If the commissions can’t meet their deadlines, non-partisan legislative staff will take over the effort.

As Colorado approaches one year since its first coronavirus case, some are asking why there’s little word from a committee formed twenty-one years ago to tackle disease epidemics. The Governor’s Expert Emergency Epidemic Response Committee is made up of experts in medicine, public health, government and emergency management. But it has seemingly been left out of major decisions coming from Governor Jared Polis’ office. Critics say the lack of transparency is concerning, but state health leaders say the advisory committee is not intended for rapidly evolving situations. 

The town of Craig is hoping a local community college will help the town adjust when the coal-fired power plant closes in 2030. Colorado Northwestern Community College has limited funding, and there are no clear plans on how to expand the school. But leaders on campus and in the community are hopeful that it can step up to diversify the region’s economy and prevent the northwestern Colorado town from disappearing.
