Every week day we’re sharing a closer look at one of our top stories. Today we’re getting into the details of Gov. Jared Polis’s proposed $1.3 billion stimulus plan.

 

Before we begin, let’s go back in time with some Colorado history adapted from historian Derek R Everett’s book “Colorado Day by Day”:

 

Today, we take you back to November 13th, 1938, when Pope Pius XI beatified the late Frances X. Cabrini. Cabrini immigrated to the US from Italy and eventually made her way to Colorado. She built a summer camp for orphans in Jefferson County and dedicated herself to improving the lives of immigrants.

 

Now, our feature story. 

 

On Thursday, Colorado Gov. Jared Polis asked state lawmakers to spend over a billion dollars on an economic stimulus package that he said would create up to 15,000 jobs and boost the state’s economy.

 

That was Gov. Polis during a recent presentation of the Fiscal Year 2021-2022 state budget.

 

And now, Colorado Sun Political Reporter John Frank is joining us today to talk about the details of the proposed plan.

 

So, John, what exactly does governor Jared Polis propose? What does this stimulus package include and who will benefit?

 

Speaking of those stimulus checks, can you tell us more about the impacts that the proposed package would have on the state’s economy?

The idea for a stimulus package is appealing to state lawmakers in both parties — particularly given the lack of action at the federal level — but it remains uncertain whether Colorado even has enough money to cover the costs. 

 

Sen. Bob Rankin, a budget writer, said his Republican colleagues support the concept of the stimulus but want to work together on the details.

 

He said, that “This is not a partisan issue, it’s one I think we should all get behind for the good of the people of Colorado.”
